UPDATE 3: MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow played the video of Romney’s “airplane windows” comment on Monday and still reported it as a gaffe, saying that the footage may “end up being a turning point in the election.”

UPDATE 2: The initial Los Angeles Times story that reported Mitt Romney’s airplane remark was based on a pool report by the New York Times’ Ashley Parker, who later emailed New York Magazine and confirmed that the presidential candidate was joking. Mystery solved.

From NYMag.com:

The Los Angeles Times story that relayed Romney’s airplane remark to the world was based off a pool report written by the New York Times‘s Ashley Parker. When we asked Parker this morning whether it seemed as if Romney made the mark in jest, she left no doubt. “Romney was joking,” she e-mailed. Parker told us that while the pool report didn’t explicitly indicate that Romney was joking, it was self-evident that he was.

UPDATE (8:20 p.m.): William Everitt, vice president of Investment Real Estate Associates (IREA), told TheBlaze that he was at the Romney fundraiser in Beverly Hills on Saturday. He said Romney was absolutely joking when he said he doesn’t know why airplane windows don’t open.

“Basically he was retelling the story and when he said ‘I don’t know why they don’t have roll down windows on airplanes,’ he looked at the audience and everyone laughed,” Everitt told TheBlaze. “It was a clearly delivered joke…There were 1,000 people there that will tell you the same thing.”

If what Everitt is saying is true, this could be an instance where a gullible media jumped at the opportunity to make Romney look stupid. An initial report by The Los Angeles Times did not indicate that the remarks were made jokingly, however, a later LA Times article mentions that the comments may have been a joke.

TheBlaze is working to get comments from additional fundraiser attendees as well as the Romney campaign. Check back later for more updates.

For now, here is a rundown of some of the media outlets that reported Romney’s comments as a gaffe:

Additionally, MSNBC host Ed Schultz mocked Romney on his show Monday, lecturing the GOP presidential nominee for his comments on airplane windows. After condescendingly lecturing on why you can’t open airplane windows, he

“This guy wants to have authority over the Federal Aviation Administration,” he said.

The Majority Report with Sam Seder, a small time podcast, also attacked Romney over the comments.

“This is the time where I say we need to start giving the guy a pass on things like this because it really is starting to become kind of cruel,” one of the shows hosts said. “He’s going to lose anyways.”

(Original story below)

GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney made an apparent gaffe while speaking at a fundraiser in Beverly Hills Saturday that liberal pundits will have a field day with.

While explaining how concerned he was for his wife, Ann, after he discovered that her plane was forced to make an emergency landing on Friday because of an electrical fire, Romney said it is “dangerous” and a “real problem” that plane windows don’t roll down.

Here’s exactly what he said, from the Los Angeles Times:

“I appreciate the fact that she is on the ground, safe and sound. And I don’t think she knows just how worried some of us were,” Romney said. “When you have a fire in an aircraft, there’s no place to go, exactly, there’s no — and you can’t find any oxygen from outside the aircraft to get in the aircraft, because the windows don’t open. I don’t know why they don’t do that. It’s a real problem. So it’s very dangerous. And she was choking and rubbing her eyes. Fortunately, there was enough oxygen for the pilot and copilot to make a safe landing in Denver. But she’s safe and sound.”

As Gawker explains, “Also very dangerous: installing roll-down windows in airplanes, the cabins of which depend upon precise levels of air pressurization to keep passengers and crew members from passing out due to lack of oxygen.”

While it’s obvious that Romney’s comments came out of concern for his wife, if he wasn’t joking, let’s just hope he doesn’t decide to get into the aeronautics business.

There has been some speculation that Romney made the comments jokingly, however, the Romney campaign has yet to comment.

I assumed Romney meant that when a plane in distress lands, there should be a way for the windows to roll down to let smoke out and/or let passengers escape.

Because if an airplane window even has the capability of rolling down there is a much higher probability of a pressure seal failing. The more seating surfaces an airplane has between pressure barriers, the much likelier the threat of leakage, especially since the cabin is pressurized so much higher than atmospheric pressure. When a plane is flying at maximum altitude, differential pressure between cabin and atmosphere is almost 15 psi.

Right alongside Romney, let’s hope that you never get into the aeronautics industry either.

Actually, many small aircraft have plenty of windows that mechanically open, even ones with pressurized cabins. You should open them on the ground and yell ‘clear’ before you fire up the prop as a nice thing to do. Aircraft windows aren’t that hard to design to open. You can even build in safeties so they can’t be opened above certain speeds or certain heights. The added cost and weight would be prohibitive.

So, he’s speaking from a viewpoint of being able to get air in an enclosed space, I actually agree with the concept, there should be a safe, rapid ventilation capability on all aircraft. He’s just choosing to go with the window bit. I wouldn’t but hey, I get what he means.

Yeah and why was there no oxygen masks? Because the plane was not a commercial airliner with paying customers, I think that it might have been a GulfStream or some other “Private/Corporate” style jet.

The reason that they don’t is because when they first created pressurized cabins capable of flying at 30K+ feet above the ground they found that sealing windows of that nature was difficult. And there was a famous jet crash in the UK of a first generation BOAC jet where cracks had formed around the window frames that caused a loss of pressure and crashed killing passengers.

Perhaps, but even if you could open the window at 30,000 feet you wouldn’t be able to breath the air at that altitude very well especially if you are panicked and breathing heavily. Not to mention the 300 mph winds that would rush into the cabin.

Why not include parachutes on commercial flights instead? That way if your plane becomes uninhabitable or breaks apart in mid-flight, you’d have at least a slight chance at surviving.

There are windows that open up in an aircraft. They are located in the cockpit. They cannot be opened in flight because of the pressure differential between the negative pressure outside the aircraft and the positive pressure inside the aircraft – the windows swing inwards, so the positive pressure inside the cabin holds them tight.

Once pressure is equalized on the ground the windows will open. These windows are only in the cockpit. They could put the same type of window in the passenger section with no concern that passengers could open them in flight, because it is physically impossible. The positive pressure in a pressurized environment seals the windows closed. It is just more costly and requires more maintenance costs to install opening windows in areas outside the cockpit. But, it is not a bad idea to install a swing-open window in a few rows of a commercial aircraft. It would provide more airflow in an emergency situation on the ground. Electrical fires, when they occur on a commercial aircraft, are all in the equipment located in the forward, cockpit area.

This isn’t a gaffe. It is not completely thought out, but it does point out that pilots have access to swing door windows, while passengers do not. The only problem would be making sure that the windows are closed for take-off, but attendants already make sure every table tray is stowed, and every seat is upright. It wouldn’t be much more work to make sure a few carefully placed opening windows are secure

Right, planes should automatically suck all the oxygen out of the plane to kill off the fire. Who honestly cares about the people inside that need to breathe? Priorities, it doesn’t matter how bad the fire is if everyone suffocates to death.

As far as the person mentioning(sorry, wasn’t able to get the user name)”explosive decompression”, I try not to insult, but you are an idiot if you believe that hollywood fantasy. I assume if someone ever dinged your fender or worse, you would run screaming from the car about how it was going to explode. We must be beating them worse than I thought. A real journalist would have interviewed some of those attending. I’ve tried to post this several times, but most airplane disasters happen on TAKE OFF and LANDING and windows that could pop out wouldn’t be so bad…they do you know over wings and the doors open for the chutes. The fact that they could not be removed on this place in emergency is awful! More people die from smoke inhalation than anything else.
I adore ANN ROMNEY and I’m sure MITT was fit to be tied when he heard this. A little compassion from these trolls would be nice…ah, but then, if they had any compassion, they wouldn’t be trolls would they.

Remember the story of him being so poor in college that he and Ann rented an apartment for less than $200 per month and couldn’t afford furniture. For a desk and table, they used a door set over saw horses. He didn’t inherit his millions, he earned it, then set up Bain Capital to invest in businesses which were going bankrupt and then help them turn them around. He succeeded with enough of them to become a Millionaire. And he’s the guy who did the nuts and bolts work of turning them around. Hmmm, I do recall the hijacking of TWA Flight 847 in 1985. A terrorist was pushing the pilots face and his along with a pistol in his right hand out of the open window of the aircraft. I recall that he took a couple of shots at the tarmac as reporters got too close too. Seems to me that was a Boeing 727-200.
Well duh, so many of you want to claim that a man who has been flying jets probably since the 707 made passenger jet flights common place, knows nothing about the windows? Those windows that I am sure he has sat next to if not thousands of times, the maybe only a few less than that. Then, keep dreaming.

@MIL MOM……..one of the reasons I like Ann Romney is she knows how to make do when she has to.
The comment about living in a cheap basement apt. during college and she taped carpet samples together to have a carpet really hit home for me.
We lived on a military base, in a Quanset Hut and I couldn’t stand no carpet on the floors, and
didn’t have the money to buy a big rug, so I did exactly like Ann, I went by carpet stores to get whatever samples they wanted to get rid of and taped them together to have approx. a 5×8′ carpet. Sure, it was colorful, but I loved it and the memory of those good days make me tear up. Knowing
Ann Romney did the same thing tickles me.
Some of the best days in life are the times you have to suck it up and make do with whatever you have. At least, they are my best memories, and I remember loving my life during those times. Military service, little money, but pride in our Country. That’s what it’s all about.

READ THE ACTUAL TRANSCRIPT – NOT this slanted article!

Did the Blaze writer seriously just use “Gawker” to “explain” to us what Romney meant??? Nice source!

Romney never suggested “roll down windows” he was simply stating that airplanes should have some way to let non-contaminated air from the exterior into the cabin when its full of smoke! DUH!

I think that once you hit the tarmac and still couldn’t breath because of the smoke, you might agree with Mitt on this one. I guess his common sense is too much for some.

***Of course he didn’t mean for the windows to be able to be opened by anyone but the pilot and even then with a safety override to only open when the altitude and speed would allow…

Its kinda funny how the people trying to make this into a gaffe are actually the ones who look stupid by expecting Romney to explain the details of how the airplane windows would actually work – step by step!

    What a waste of time.

As usual, Mitt Romney wants to have it both ways. Just like with the budget. He says he will balance it but he refuses to make any significant cuts or even say where the minor cuts will come from. For him, it is just a political opportunity to criticize Obama without having to worry about fallout.

Regarding the space program, i tend to think that whenever the government tries to do something or ‘improve focus” it necessarily means more money spent. Look at the department of education

I’d like to think that maybe he was wondering why there aren’t some sort of emergency window releases, like there are on buses. Surely, someone that flies as much as he does, knows a little about cabin pressurization at altitude. Or, maybe not.

That is what I was thinking. But to put one for every aisle would be an engineering nightmare.

You could do it but the plane would develop too many stress cracks too quickly.

Plus Jihad Johny would have tried to open one of them by now.

that is NOT a gaffe, but this is ….Joe Biden misstates number of troops in Afghanistan by over 580,000…. this guy is the Vice President and a Foreign Affairs expert…. give me a break

the Liberals are wetting themselves at this ‘gaffe’, which was a statement out of concern for his wife….. michelle wouldn’t have to worry, obama’s only concern would be that HE get oxygen first. obama and biden have 1,000 of REAL gaffe’s and Liberal fools can’t see them because they are blinded by his halo.

Actually, with proper locks, roll-down windows in emergency situations would be a good idea to prevent suffocation in case of fire. Not user-controlled, mind you, but the control and sensor design necessary would not be difficult to produce.

I also find it sad and petty that the media is so giddy over a “gaffe” of a contender yet completely silent on the deadly blunders of the current president.

I know! That is what I was thinking. But people are too stupid to realize it would be a better design the way you described it. the part where you couldn’t open them in a non emergency was obvious but idiots need to be told every detail.

exactly right! I was writing the same thing when you posted this…

I think the people trying to make fun of Romney are the ones who look silly by expecting him to take the time to explain the details of such an idea when that wasn’t the purpose of the statement, he was simply saying that airplanes should be able to take in fresh air and release the smoke in an event like that.

BTW – from that stagnant smell on EVERY plane, I wish they could somehow roll the windows down while changing passengers… maybe then everyone on board wouldn’t catch that one guy’s cold! :)

Oh, come on. In the middle of him worried about his wife in danger? Come on! New low. If the media attacks on this it will make the National Enquirer a better source of news. If you have never had a loved in danger, you cannot judge what is going on in these statements.

He’s been open so many planes in his life he had to have known., He probably had a brain fart form the stress of the campaign & worry over his wife.

If his wife died prematurely (God forbid), he wouldn’t yell wahoo & find another one the next day like Bill Clinton.

In the 70′s, my Dad’s Aerostar and twin Commanche planes had windows that opened. He would occasionally open them in flight; though we weren’t 30,000 feet of course.

He was worried about his wife, he would not be expected to be at his best. So freaking what, big deal, and who cares. Everyone is not always on top of everything, especially when one of their loved ones comes close to getting killed. People are swatting at nats and swallowing camels again.
