The droughts of 2012 have led to higher prices in raw commodities, as TheBlaze reported earlier this year, and now some are saying this will lead to an “unavoidable” global bacon shortage.
Bacon, folks. Bacon.
“Economically, it’s not a good time,” Tim Maiers of the Illinois Pork Producers Association, the fourth largest of its kind in the U.S., tells CBS Illinois.
An increase in the cost of raw commodities has led to increased costs in maintaining herds. As a result, farmers in both the U.S. and Europe have been forced to downsize the size of their herds and cut back on production. This has led to Britain’s National Pig Association, “the voice of the British pig industry,” to issue a statement claiming a shortage of bacon worldwide “is now unavoidable,” CBS News reports.
But … not the bacon!
The British trade group reported last week that production for Europe’s main pig producers declined between 2011 and 2012, a trend that “is being mirrored around the world.” And you know what the group blames this on? You guessed it: an increase in feed costs.
Likewise, the U.S. Department of Agriculture in August claimed that a reduction in pork for 2013 can be blamed on — you guessed it — the Midwest drought. As feed prices continue to rise, we can expect hog producers to cut back on production in order to control costs.
“Considering those factors, the USDA forecasted next year’s pork production at 23 billion pounds, a decrease of about 1.3 percent from this year’s estimated total. That breaks down to Americans consuming slightly more than 45 pounds of pork per capita in 2013, a reduction of more than 1 percent from this year’s estimates,” CBS News reports.
“The decline in production could be worse in Europe. On Wednesday, British Pig Executive Mick Sloyan told European retailers that pork losses could be as high 10 percent in the latter half of 2013, which could double pork prices, according to the U.K. pig association,” the report adds.
If ever there were a time to get serious about global events, now is that time. But you know, there’s still plenty of bacon over at BaconFreak in The Marketplace by The Blaze:
Seriously. It’s a store dedicated to bacon. Do it.

The drought has nothing to do with this pork “shortage”.
Muslims don’t eat pork. It’s offensive to them. Muslims consider pigs as unclean.
If Obama is re-elected, pork will be banned.
Message to Islam. “Don’t get between Americans and their bacon.”
Muslims also consider dogs as unclean. That’s why they don’t keep dogs as pets.
How long will it be until Americans are forced to give up their beloved pets?
This gets me to thinking, that there may have been evil forces at work, during the dog food melamine contaminations, a few years back. Many dogs died from kidney failure. More dogs were “murdered” than the media dared to admit.

Sep. 25, 2012 at 5:08pmYes, the price of feed- hog production takes corn and soybean meal, has gone up dramatically since mid June when the drought in the midwest began to take hold….. Corn prices increaased from about $ 5.00 /bu up to a peak of about $ 8.50 /bu in Aug and now stand at about $7.50. Meal prices have increased similarly……increasing from about $ 350/ton to over $ 500/ton in early Sept. This has resulted in hog farmers selling hogs to avoid using high priced feed and then sell fattened hogs at a loss….resulting live hog prices have dropped from about $ .6200 /lb. in late June to about $ .5000 /lb. now. Hog farmers’ cost of production is greater than $ .5000 /lb….so they are losing money feeding
$ 7.50 corn to 50 cent hogs
So…… what this all means is simply that supplies of prok bellies from processors may tighten up a bit and prices of bacon will increase…but there WILL NOT be any bare shelves in any grocery stores…so calm down all you bacon scented soap on a rope fans!! My guess is retail prices of a pound of private label bacon in the stores may increase about 10-15%………..

Sep. 25, 2012 at 4:51pmIts come to the point that ranchers need to be farmers too to keep their livestock from getting lean or keep feed stocks up. Water is another big input. We [Big-G] seems all-a-frenzy to make fuel over food?
“As recently as 2008, the Commodity Credit Corporation (CCC), a wholly owned subsidiary of the USDA, reported that there was virtually no grain stores left in the US. Of the 24.1 million bushels in reserve, only 2.7 million bushels remained after the bulk of the grain stores were given for humanitarian relief.” Hmm. Humanitarian relief? How’s about giving it to our enemies, oh, I mean, our “friends”?!
Wow – like Glenn said, be praying that Australia can produce enough wheat grain for us all cause we’re sucking wind. The world lives on Pork, Chicken, Beef, fish, Wheat, Corn & Peanuts; one primary food source on the scale dropping weight fast. I hate to think which one will fall next.
If I had the resources… I’d be growing non GMO wheat. Our washington friends in USDA(CCC) prove once again they are not for Americans or America. And a global shortage of bacon/pork maybe just the start?

Sep. 25, 2012 at 4:45pmSpeaking of Beckle, did anyone hear him on The Five yesterday. They were talking about the attack in Benghazi, they were saying that it was a coordinated attack of 100 Alqaeda terrorists, someone asked why there weren’t an increased number of Marines stationed there due to it being 9/11. Well, Bob said that even if there were increased numbers of Marines there that they would not have been able to stop them.
Now I’m not going to lie, I did not serve in the military (which I regret), however, I have many friends that served as Marines and other branches of the military and just hearing their stories, I know they can handle themselves, especially if our government were to let them lose and do what they do best. Well Bob Beckle said our Marines could not handle 100 of these terrorist and they would not be able to stop them. I’m sorry but that was a MAJOR insult. And to add on top of that he had the nerve to be wearing Marine suspenders, which he pointed out was to show respect to them.
So he puts our Marines down saying they couldn’t handle these terrorists and then says he respects them…..I’m surprised no one has picked up on that.
