Obama Will Challenge the World to Confront Root Causes of Muslim Rage in U.N. Speech

NEW YORK (AP) — Campaign politics shadowing every word, President Barack Obama on Tuesday will challenge the world to confront the root causes of rage exploding across the Muslim world, calling it a defining choice “between the forces that would drive us apart and the hopes we hold in common.”

Obama will step before the United Nations General Assembly and declare that the United States will not shrink from its role in troubled, transitioning nations despite the killing of four Americans in Libya, including U.S. ambassador Chris Stevens, and more than 50 people total in violence linked at least in part to an anti-Muslim film.

Obama will also to seek to show U.S. resolve in preventing Iran from developing a nuclear weapon, a menacing issue that has undermined White House relations with Israel’s leadership.

In his final international address before the November election, Obama will stand up for democratic values on a stage afforded to presidents, not presidential challengers. He will use it to try to boost his political standing without ever mentioning Republican opponent Mitt Romney.

Were there any doubt that the U.S. presidential campaign hung heavy over Obama’s speech, Romney shredded it by assailing Obama’s foreign affairs leadership on the eve of the president’s speech. Now comes Obama’s chance to assert his world vision on his terms.

“Today, we must affirm that our future will be determined by people like Chris Stevens, and not by his killers,” Obama said of the U.S. ambassador, who was killed during an assault on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, that the White House has deemed a terrorist attack. “Today, we must declare that this violence and intolerance has no place among our United Nations.”

The White House released excerpts in advance of Obama’s midmorning speech.

Obama’s comments will be scrutinized around the globe and by the gathering of presidents and prime ministers in the famed United Nations hall, given the tumult, terrorism, nuclear threats and poverty that bind so many nations. His emphasis will be on the unrest in the Muslim world and on Iran, whose disputed nuclear ambitions have unnerved much of the world and caused tension between the United States and longstanding ally Israel over whether Obama has forcefully defined his breaking point for military action.

“Make no mistake: a nuclear-armed Iran is not a challenge that can be contained,” Obama says in his speech. He adds: “That is why a coalition of countries is holding the Iranian government accountable. And that is why the United States will do what we must to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.”

That language remains as specific as Obama will publicly describe his “red line” for military intervention.

Setting a sharp political context for the speech, Romney went on the offensive Monday.

“This is time for a president who will shape events in the Middle East, not just be merciful or be at the mercy of the events,” Romney said. Focusing on the killing of Stevens and mass bloodshed in Syria, Romney repeatedly ridiculed Obama’s comment that nations moving toward democracy after the Arab Spring face “bumps in the road.”

That prompted White House spokesman Jay Carney to fire back at Romney: “There is a certain rather desperate attempt to grasp at words and phrases here to find political advantage, and in this case that’s profoundly offensive.”

Obama’s activities at the United Nations say plenty, too: There are not many of them. Campaigning is his imperative.

He is skipping the private meetings with key allies that a U.S. president typically schedules when the whole international community comes to New York. The president will spend only 24 hours in New York in total this time, and he spent some of it Monday to appear on “The View,” giving a talk show interview intended to sell his election pitch to a big TV audience.

The dominant theme of Obama’s U.N. speech will be his response to the protests raging in places across the Middle East and North Africa. As he has for days, Obama will condemn the violence, defend democratic principles of free speech and promise no U.S. withdrawal of outreach.

Much of the growing ire is aimed at the United States because of anti-Islam film produced in this country, but the White House has now deemed the attack on its consulate in Libya a “terrorist attack” and has not ruled out the possibility it was premeditated. Obama now says it “wasn’t just a mob action.”

“There are no words that excuse the killing of innocents,” Obama says in the speech excerpts. “There is no video that justifies an attack on an embassy. There is no slander that provides an excuse for people to burn a restaurant in Lebanon, or destroy a school in Tunis, or cause death and destruction in Pakistan.”

In a preview of Obama’s speech, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton appealed Monday for Muslims to show “dignity” as they protest the film denigrating the Prophet Muhammad.

“Dignity does not come from avenging insults,” she said in a speech to her husband’s Clinton Global Initiative. Romney and Obama were to speak there as well on Tuesday.

The secretary of state was also standing in for Obama, meeting with the presidents of Afghanistan, Egypt, Libya and Pakistan. She was due later in the week to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas.

For U.S. presidents, the yearly United Nations address is always laced with domestic politics even though the speeches are scripted without campaign references. Wars and the failed attempts at Mideast peace have dominated in recent years.

Romney’s campaign made the campaign linkage directly Monday.

“On the eve of his United Nations address, President Obama’s foreign policy is in disarray,” spokesman Ryan Williams said. “As president, Mitt Romney will repair our relationships abroad and create a safer, more secure nation.”

Polling shows Obama has a clear edge over Romney when voters are asked who they think is a stronger leader and would better protect the country.

Sixty-five years of American Middle East policy was the cause of 9/11. Not because I say that it was, but rather, because al Qaeda and facts say that it was. Blowback.

Americans can live in denial, but the disease will grow.

Look, Truman’s State Department told him, us, that we would be fighting the Muslims if we chose to back the European and American Jews who took Palestine as theirs. Why people are surprised is ignorance.

Truman made a foreign policy decision based on a selfish domestic reason, his re-election. We are paying the price, and it was predicted.

They’ve been at war with us far, far longer than you would like to believe, and their Holy Koran told them to be. Pull your head out of the sand one of these days.

      Jerk,
Why don’t you go live in some other country if ours is so bad and does things like back people, albeit dictators, that at least control there masses to the point that they don’t attact other countries. 911 was just a terrorist attack. If they didn’t have our backing those leaders, they would have come for us for some other reason. Most Americans are descendants of the 10 tribes of Israel (which after the captivity and release were called ISRAEL and Caucasians and are chosen people too so that is why we are the GREAT SATAN and Judah and Benjamin in the land of Israel are called the small Satan. Palestine, hmmm – I believe Israel was there as they had to take it after the 40 years in the desert and not until after the captivity and scattering of the tribes did the “Palestinians” take over that land. It was given to the Jewish people by the UN and the UN gave land to the Palestinians which they refused because they wanted ALL the land and were against the Jews having a state so don’t stick up for the babies that would not play nice. You need to go over there and live with them and see if you really like being told what you can and can’t do. TIll then, your opinions are not backed up by facts. Just because I live in a state and am called by its name does NOT mean I was born there. Where I live is NOT were I was born by I am called a member of that state since I LIVE here. Same with Judea. You could be Chinese and since you lived there, you would be a JUDEAN (Jew)

I can’t imagine why anyone would think Barack Hussein ( inserted after election)Obama is a Muslim, can you?
Could it be because all he does is talk about Muslims and seems weirdly to know a lot about them?
Could it be because he backs those governments who hate Israel?
Could it be because he quotes the Quran frequently?
Could it be because he says he is a christian but goes to church only when his christianity is questioned.
Could it be because he famously said ” my Muslim faith”. ? I think it was a tease.. not a slip. I believe he wanted to stir up questions about him being a Muslim then he could label those people racists/anti-Muslim. This man is cunning and doesn’t make slips. He makes it look like a slip but it always has an agenda.
Could it be because he bowed to the Saudi King (required by Muslims)? and he said he was picking something up that he dropped? How the heck did he get away with that?
Could it be because he says the most beautiful sound is the Muslim call to prayer?
Could it be that because he obviously hates Israel but has to pretend he backs them so he can get the jewish vote? wake the eff up Jewish people

    etc.

      A2A,

Need someones opinion on this. Youtube “know your enemy” by thefuelproject. The producer calls it the new world order from a Christian perspective. It discusses all the the things you have mentioned but it goes a little deeper into the spiritual aspects of it. Not sure how much I buy into all of the linkages but if anything else, his biblical doctrine seems authentic. The most shocking claim is how he shows the linkage between all the pagan religions(Catholism, Mormonism, Islam, Jehovah’s Witness, Budism, Freemasonry ect…) and Babylonian mysticism. As if they are all worshipping the sun god and moon god or male god and female goddess. If folks think you are off your rocker, wait until they see what this guy is claiming.

SOY, Just how many actual Libertarians are there in Congress? Truly not very many at all. How effective would a Gary Johnson be as the president at….let’s say….repealing the NDAA? Do you think that POing the rest of the Congress will be very effective? He would literally have to pick up that magic wand that 0bama would have left behind and wave it around just as 0bama has with his “we’ll just ignore that part of a certain law, or rule by fiat with executive orders.” Not very Constitutional is it? A president sitting in office with two other parties controlling everything everywhere else in the country will do just that, SIT in his office with literally no allies outside of his administration. Now, don’t get me wrong, I, and I am certain that just about nobody else here supports the NDAA, and I would certainly like to see it repealed immediately. You are silly to think that so many of us are so one sided an shallow to actually believe that any one party will be our savior. I would prefer to stick with two parties and not become like Italy. My plan is to stick with the Tea Party ideals and hopefully and eventually yank our Republicans back into the right frame of mind.

SOY, Do what? My premise is incorrect? Yeah, you go with that, and prance around the flower garden hand in hand with the other little pixies. I’ve asked just what DO YOU think that one man could do in office as a Libertarian? Tell me some of your thoughts about that one man in office instead of attacking me. Make some real sense, how about it. Your one Libertarian can sit in his Oval Office and not accomplish one thing. Yep, that will get him re-elected too, won’t it? First, you guys are going to have to recruit more people to see things your way to ever have enough of a following to put enough people in office to carry any amount of the Congress. Insulting those who you actually need to take a harder look at becoming libertarian will get you just how far? I’ve told you before that I see a lot of good in the Libertarian platform, but also find some of the planks to be something of a joke, and not that many though. But, if you do not grow you party you will never get anywhere. Keep p i s s i n g off everybody else and you will never see it happen.
Now, tell me what one man can and will do in the Oval Office. Tell me how he will promote that platform into fruition. I really want to hear one of you make some real sense out of your day dream. If you can actually make some sense out of it, I’ll not only read it, but help you promote it too.

He might end up supporting a UN resolution against “islamophobia” effectively in favor of outlawing free speech. There is no way that Obama will stand up against the fascism that is normal under islam.

I make the analogy that reasoning with radical muslims is like reasoning with a two-year-old child. You can’t. obama thinks just because he is muslim, his radical brothers should listen to him. And to hear hillary clinton out there preaching to muslims to show “dignity,” what a laughing stock.

The root of muslim rage is because they are muslims, diametrically opposed to each and every religion, culture, and idea that does not come from their “Holy Book”. Not that hard to figure out or deal with, but our “leaders” don’t don’t have the will.

Christ warned of false prophets….Its so obvious that ISLAM’s roots are with Satan himself.

Also, Islam is being “Used” by the dark side to create conflict so that “they” can insert their “solutions”

Study the Hegelian Dialectic and this will all make sense.

There is no Muslim rage, only Muslim hatred and violence towards all non-Muslims. The Koran tells them they should rule the world, and they believe it and are attempting to doing as they are told. The notion of Muslim rage presupposes Muslim have been wronged somehow and are seeking justice – bull. It’s all part of the game they’re playing. They haven’t been wronged, just not permitted to rule over the rest of us, which they feel is their rightful position in the world. Until we either lay down and become their slaves, or smash them into the sand, they’re going to continue acting like psychopaths and they’ll continue to kill non-Muslims (and that includes atheists). Our choice.

13.) The United States ranked #1 in Global Competitiveness the day Obama walked into office. Since his inauguration….we have declined to #7

0bama IS the ROOT CAUSE of this Muslim Rage. Shooting his mouth off about killing bin Laden for over a year now, as well his other mouth pieces, Carney/Biden. 29 mentions of this at the DNC by his surrogates. Flights of drones all over the middle east working on his personally approved kill list. Shoot, just listen to the Arabs the world over shouting, “0bama….0bama, we are all Osama!”

SOY, please and for only a brief moment remove your libertarian filter glasses and take a closer look at what has happened to the Middle East only since 0bama assumed the office. Yes, there have been screwy interventions by the U.S. in the past regardless of which party was in office, but 0bama has gone far and beyond all of the meddling of the past, and brother, if you really take a look, even you can see it. There is nothing that I am laying on thick, I’m just focusing a magnifying glass on it.

SOY, You idiot, I actually blame a combination of the loony things that Bill Clinton did by Executive Order during his terms that set the snowball effect into motion, then the Bush admin and a careless congress who failed to see it coming, and who enacted their own idiotic laws that made things worse.
Still, insult all you want with either party. But, take heed. YOUR kind will accomplish Jack-Diddly-Squat until you get a libertarian heavy House and Senate, as well as gain the presidency. When do you think that will happen? As long as it will keep Democrats and the likes of 0bama from causing any more damage to this country I would vote your way, if they win in the Republican primaries. But, not until then. You guys just do not have the UMPH to really do anything. And, you need to come to grips with it.

OBLIQUE – avoid anything written by university academics. These ‘independent thinkers’ universally despise Israel because, well…they’re Jews. And always remember – the Jews have occupied that land for thousands and thousands of years. What we today call ‘Palestinians’ have been there only decades.

      Oblique,
You can read the myths and facts on this page regarding Israel and the Palestinian problem. http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/myths3/MFroots.html#1 . The Jews were in Israel LONG before Islam even existed, and the evidence indicates longer than the Arabs. The Jews have the ONE VERY SMALL PART OF THE MIDDLE EAST, and the Arabs have many, many countries that they can claim as their own. Given that the Jewish population of Israel is a modernized democracy, includes Palestinians in their government, and allows freedom of religion, the case for a Palestinian country is weak at best. I feel bad that some were displaced after WWII, but reparations have been made on both sides, and it’s a done deal now.

More BS from Obama. The root cause of Muslims violence and hatred is called “The Koran”. Until you exterminate all Muslims on the planet you will never stop Muslim violence. There is no other solution. You would think 1400 years of unprovoked Muslim violence would wake some people up.

@BrotherWill. I would think that we’d all agree that exterminating all Muslins is not an option, so if that is the only solution, as you suggest, then surely we eventually will be destroyed, for nuclear in their hands seems to be a much more likely scenario. It would seem that our greatest apolitical minds should be deciding once and for all our BEST option and to set a policy from which we don’t deviate, whether that should be a preemptive strike at annihilation, threats to do so with the real option of acting on those threats, or another such policy (even if it means simple negotiations). I do believe that those involved in this decision need to truly understand the root cause of the anger of our enemies, and even to honestly address the possibility that the anger may be deserved. Whatever is decided we do need to act with haste, our survival is in the balance.

Islamists and Communists have virtually the same goals….destroy Western culture through every one of their institutions. Not much left of our once great country at the present moment.
