STILLWATER, Okla. (TheBlaze/AP) — A gunshot rang out at an Oklahoma junior high school before classes began Wednesday, terrifying teenagers who feared a gunman was on the loose.
Soon, though, students learned no one else was in danger. One of their eighth-grade classmates had taken his own life, shooting himself in the head with a handgun in the hall, authorities said. The deceased student has been identified as 13-year-old Cade Poulos.
“Throughout the entire thing, we all thought someone shot someone else,” said student Paiton Gardner, 14. “We didn’t know it was a suicide. We were freaking out.”
Some students bolted outside Stillwater Junior High. Staffers quickly locked down the building and evacuated the rest of the school’s 700 eighth- and ninth-graders, along with students from an adjacent elementary school, police Capt. Randy Dickerson said.
From KOCO:
It was superhero dress-up day at school, according to the school’s website. Students who spoke with KOCO Eyewitness News 5′s Dan Thomas said the student who died was an eighth-grader and that he’d dressed up as Two-Face from the Batman series.
Dickerson said the 13-year-old didn’t leave a note, and authorities said they don’t know why he killed himself. Superintendent Ann Caine, who oversees the district about 70 miles west of Tulsa, said there weren’t any reports that the teen had been bullied.
“There is no indication that that’s what occurred,” Caine said. She said the teen was a good student who got along with other kids.
Police wouldn’t say where the weapon came from or how the eighth-grader got it into the school. Caine said there aren’t any metal detectors but expects there will be discussions about the policy.
Gardner said she realized something was wrong early Wednesday when students began to run past her.
“People looked terrified,” said Gardner, a ninth-grader. “The football coach was like, `Get out, get out! Someone’s been shot.’”
She and other students sprinted down the hallway, passing blood on the wall and floor as she ran to a nearby playground.

Another ninth-grader, Jake Green, said he heard the single shot ring out after he and dozens of other students gathered to pray before school.
“We heard this loud boom and everyone just got quiet,” Green said. “No one said a word.”
A teacher told the students to get out of the building, Green said.
“Everyone was really scared. We didn’t know if the kid shot himself or if there was a shooter outside the school who shot in,” Green said. “Everyone didn’t know what was going on, so they were screaming and running as fast as they could to get to the playground.”
Some students wore superhero costumes Wednesday as part of an effort to raise cancer awareness.
Green said students who were already in their classrooms were locked in the building for about an hour. Parents were told to pick up their children at a nearby shopping center.
“It was really scary,” Green said. “Everyone’s kind of traumatized and doesn’t know how to act or respond.”
Some people planned to gather to pray Wednesday night at the nearby Highland Park United Methodist Church.
The Rev. Derek Belase said he doesn’t know the teen’s family.
“We do know that they’re hurting,” Belase said.
Kenny Monday told The Associated Press that his son, Kennedy, heard the gunshot but did not witness the shooting.
“It’s so sad that the kid lost his life, but we’re just glad he didn’t shoot anyone else,” Monday said.

Sep. 26, 2012 at 10:49pmBefore jumping to conclusions, maybe we should find out what kind of gun was used. Some guns are so powerful that the wadding in a blank round could deliver a fatal blow. Some shot shells might be mis-identified as blanks to a novice.

Sep. 27, 2012 at 5:57amIt makes no mention of a shotgun. There is no wadding. I am sure the kid knew what he was doing. I don’t see the reason for trying to figure out why he did it. There’s no need on our part to investigate that. Why can’t a person shoot themselves without their actions coming under scrutiny? There’s no deep story here. A kid shot himself just because he could. The End.

I am a die hard, far right, Christian conservative who wants to see Obama out of the White House.
A young boy killing himself is not a victory for anyone, it is a tradgedy. I mourn for his family, his friends, and his classmates. Obviouslly, this young man needed help and unfortunately, no one realized it until it is too late.

Sep. 27, 2012 at 10:12amThat could be true, but the fact is that life in public school has scarred many for life. Most mass murderers / rapist, psychopaths when interviewed will tell stories about being bullied and ridiculed in school and they think it it every day. Sure most of them had troubled homes that are probably the real culprit. But, most of us can remember seeing people being scarred for life emotionally in the school’s hallways and on the school bus. It is not good to have large groups of kids/ teens unsupervised by adults, as is what we see in especially in public schools. Didn’t any of you see “Lord of the flies”?
Bring in Vouchers, that can be used for private schools or tax credits for home schooling.
My prayers goes out to his parents and the school.

Sep. 27, 2012 at 10:12amwow v15 that is the most insane thing i have read in a long time. The why is the most important part of this story. What if this good student who was liked by many classmates was being molested and couldnt live with the shame? If we just say “Oh he shot himself because he could, no story here.” Then the real reason for this will go unadressed. And to say he shot himself because he could…I like most of America grew up with guns in the house. I would say more than half of us had the opportunity to shoot ourselves as teens……show of hands, how many people out there shot themselves because they could….how many know someone that did….”shot himself because he could”……..WOW

The Bible says that nothing happens without your god’s say-so. If it planned this, then you should be thanking it. If not and it goes against its plan, then your god isn’t really all that powerful. Either way, prayer doesn’t work.

My school had a group of kids who would always meet by the auditorium and say a prayer before school started. They weren’t grouped or endorsed by the school, so it was okay. They did it all by themselves, so that’s probably what was going on in this case- especially with those laws by ******** that are so offended with people expressing religious freedom.

Sep. 26, 2012 at 9:20pmAnother tragic death to plague our country. It is a sign of our times that suicide claims more lives in our country than car accidents not to mention more deaths in our military than combat deaths. None of us contributes more than a little, but it all makes a difference. You matter as much as anyone else and are needed. If you think you aren’t, you are wrong. Sep. 26, 2012 at 7:27pmNo reports of being bullied. I wonder if he was; file a bully report with the school and they’ll get you outside of school for that.

Sep. 26, 2012 at 7:41pmSeems bullying is now the new excuse for a kid to kill themselves….or others. I think most of us here can say we were bullied at one time or another and or saw it first hand…..I do not recall ever wanting to kill myself over it nor did I ever hear of another taking their own life because of it.
This is a new phenom. Are kids FEELINGS so sensitive today over yesteryears that this could be the cause….I think so! We’ve become a FEELINGS based society in hopes that through the vehicle of FEELINGS we’ll be able to reach people and meet their every need. The other part is to build up people with a false sense of themselves and this is called the Self Esteem movement born in the 80s which was meant to help bring up minorities and young woman to the same level most Whites enjoyed especially men. When the reality of who a person is with all the short comings comes crashing in, how does one deal with that especially when its the first time they’ve realized their ego was bigger than their actual talent. When we let the normal course of things transpire guess what, it all gets sorted and sifted out through a more natural process than the one now in place which is actually doing more harm than good.

You do realize the suicide rate in 1930 was 3 times higher than today’s rate is? Suicide was considered normal 2000 years ago by the Greeks and embraced by the Japanese more recently.

Sep. 26, 2012 at 7:53pmI am overwhealmed !!! We all need to pray for his family. I can’t even imagine what they are going through. May GOD give them strength.
Someone above asked a poignant question. was he on ADHD medication? They five this stuff out like water and no one is following up on all the effects this stuff has. I had a grandson on it for a while and his personality changed. Thank goodness his mom realized it and took him off it.
Many times, kids with ADHD are bored to death with the school cirriculum. Many are quite brilliant and just hate the bland crap taught by teachers who don’t care about the students. It’s time to take our sschools back from bureaucrats and especially the unions. It is up to the parents to get involved and make it happen. A good place to start would be CHICAGO!! It’s a really bad scene when the MAYOR, COUNCILMEN and as many city officials as possible send their children to private schools.

Sep. 27, 2012 at 4:35pmThe crappy economy for one thing people aren’t making enough to make ends meet, but are making too much to get assistance it is part of the problem for some families. It isn’t cheap to homeschool and some areas there are rules in order to be allowed to homeschool. Here you have to have some degree in order to homeschool. Your food bill increases cause the kids are home all day. There are alot of families that can’t homeschool don’t be cruel saying they are stupid cause it could be that they can’t rather than won’t.
