Mike Meets Mitt: ‘Dirty Jobs’ Host Joins Romney for Jobs Discussion
Host of The Discovery Channel’s popular show “Dirty Jobs” and the new “How Booze Built America” Mike Rowe on Wednesday joined Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney in Ohio to participate in a panel discussion on jobs and manufacturing.
“Mike Rowe as you know is, well he is a guy that has made a name for himself by doing things other people don’t want to do — really ugly, dirty jobs,” Romney said at the event featuring about a half dozen Ohio business owners and leaders. “Like standing with a politician, alright?”
Rowe joined Romney not to officially endorse the GOP candidate, as he has made quite clear, but to spread his message of the necessity of traditional, hands-on occupations.
“He’s non partisan, he’s not here to endorse me, he’s not here to add support to one campaign or another,” Romney added. “He’s here to talk about his ideas about how to help America create more jobs.”
The “Dirty Jobs” host talked about “the men and women who do the kinds of jobs that make civilized life possible for the rest of us” and argued that the focus shouldn’t be on just opportunity and training.
“The conversation needs to start in the kitchen, around the table with moms and dads and kids, and when these kids start to think about what’s possible, mothers and fathers can’t immediately push options off of the table because they’ve bought into the idea that some jobs are better than other jobs,” he said.
“This gets right to a really, really, really, really big point that the things we used to consider to be inspirational — jobs that we used to consider aspirational, education that we used to consider aspirational — we now look at as alternative. I don’t even know what alternative education means, alternative to what?” he asked.
Rowe then addressed the notion that one must attend an institution of higher learning in order to be successful and happy in the U.S.
“There’s got to be a better way to be happy and successful in your career than simply assuming a massive amount of debt and exiting an educational program that gives you a degree without training,” Rowe said.
Now we want to stress that Rowe did not join Romney to endorse him. He accepted Romney’s invitation because he interested in spreading his pro-traditional, manual labor message.
“I really believe,” Rowe told Zap2it, “part of the reason that three million shovel-ready jobs entirely imploded is the fact that [President Barack Obama] was trying to sell that notion to a country that doesn’t want to pick up a shovel.”
Anyone who claims Rowe is somehow supporting Romney is engaging in “spin,” as the TV personality puts it.
“In fact, I’m going to be as clear as I can — this is the same message that I’ve been out there with for the last four years, same message I went to various states with,” he said, according to Zap2it, “It’s the same message that got the whole ‘Go Build…’ campaign off the ground in Alabama.”
Rowe added that he’d gladly join President Obama if it meant getting his message out.
“Look, if the president calls and says, ‘Hey, I’m having a jobs summit,’ I’ll be there, if he wants to talk about a PR campaign for work. I’m not beyond taking advantage of a presidential election,” he said.
“I’ve not heard from the White House. No, but standing by!”
The full story of how Rowe ended up on the same stage with Romney in Ohio is pretty entertaining and TheBlaze’s Meredith Jessup has been covering it since the beginning. Check it out.

Posted on September 27, 2012 at 3:02amI like Mike Rowe too. He’s just a likeable guy.
Now liberals want illegal aliens to fill those jobs that “Americans won’t do” all for the sake of “diversity.” Many conservatives want illegal aliens to fill those jobs to save their company money. I say pay people a decent wage and you won’t have to worry about “jobs that Americans won’t do.” There is no such thing actually. What they should say is “jobs that Americans won’t do for $.50 an hour.” You pay an American $10 or $12 an hour to pick apples or lettuce and you’ll get a ton of applicants. You want to pay them $.50/hour and all you will get applying are illegal aliens. We are becoming a feudal society once again with ultra rich advertising jobs that pay wages you can’t live on. We are becoming a two tiered society with no middle class. No society can survive long without a middle class.
Obama’s “shovel ready jobs” were never there. Don’t say that they were offered and Americans refused. They were never offered to begin with. It was all a typical lie from that Kenyan born fraud of a president.

Posted on September 27, 2012 at 10:14am@ Silly: In your dreams. You can’t get “Americans” to work jobs at those wages under the table because they are just fine collecting welfare benefits. There is no reason to pay someone $12/hour for unskilled labor – that’s insane. Most city wage earners (unless they are government) are barely clearing that for skilled labor. The average wage in my area is around $9.00/hr – and the government knows every cent being earned and collects for SS, state/local taxes, and workers comp., so the take home pay drops considerably. What do the welfare whores want? $15/ hour for unskilled labor under the table, paid breaks every 30 minutes, all materials supplied and paid, gratuitous @ss kissing, if you’re lucky they’ll finish the job, and God help you if you call the welfare office to let them adjust the benefits. After years of hearing the BS you’re touting, all I have to say is F-U my fellow Americans. I’ll hire ANY illegal immigrant to work. They don’t work for $0.50 hour, they work for reasonable, unskilled labor prices and they do a d@mn good job of it. They show up on time, they finish the job, and they aren’t the stuck up snobs that compromise the welfare / “working” class. Americans have stupidly bought into the superhero complex. Some people don’t deserve to earn more than the bare minimum.

You are the typical traitor that is only looking out for your fat wallet rather than what you’re doing to this country. You want to let illegal aliens water down the natural labor pool. How? Because if $10 per hour is the real going rate for picking apples, you bring in an artificial labor force that doesn’t belong here and is willing to work for far below the going rate…..an artificial labor force. YOU ARE A GREEDY MODERN DAY SLAVE OWNER. The only difference between you and some Southern slave owner of the 1840s is you don’t have to feed and house your slaves like they did. You give them a few dollars and let the illegals pile into a hotel 20 or 30 deep to sleep for the night. You are the definition of a short sighted greedy capitalist who is only looking out for whatever benefits you…..F what happens to the US because of your greed. As long as your pockets are stuffed full of cash, that’s all that you care about. You don’t care that the US is being flooded by illegals who are driving down the labor pay scale. As long as you have your Mercedes or Cadillac, who cares? Traitor, pure and simple. What’s going to happen is your illegals will gain citizenship someday and then vote to secede from the US and go back to Mexico. But again, as long as your bank account is stuffed full of cash from your slavery, who cares? Right?

Barry Sotoro, the silver tongued devil is the anti-American anti-Christ muslim foreordained to chastise and awaken good Americans to their duty. He has a firm intention and a demonic mission to disrupt, divide, sabotage and destroy. One more term is all he needs to complete his hellish mission. He must be voted out of office or he will set into motion plans for a socialist police state. History teaches us that freedom isn’t free at all. Armed conflict and the blood of patriots bought the freedom we now enjoy. How patient will Americans be when Barack Hussein shuts down coal fired power plants raising the average family’s electricity costs to $2,000 a month? Americans are experiencing unnecessary pain, suffering and misery, but it’s nothing compared to what lies ahead if Obama wins in November. God help us!

Posted on September 26, 2012 at 8:42pmWhat does it say about ourselves as Americans, when we continue to have actors “stand in for the real workers”. There was a time when people like Jack London, people who really did do the dirty job were read and allowed a voice in our nation.
Now we as workers have to have our voices sanitized by both the left and the right to make sure we are either the united army of socialist drone marching to some totalitarian eye candy, or poor but proud serfs who are content with a pat on the head,a scratch behind the ear and a word of warm thanks from the corpratist lords as we send our sons off to senseless wars and our jobs, and national wealth off to Mexico and China.I wonder if Mike Rowe will play our part in the unemployment lines, souplines,or God help us riots.

Posted on September 26, 2012 at 9:37pmIt started in the 60s when the morons who are in charge now were in college and had nothing but utter contempt for their parents who were blue collar, down to earth folk. Part of the wonder of the American experiment was the ability for upward social mobility. We didn’t have the set class structure of Old Europe. Anybody, by the sweat of their brow or the cleverness of mind could produce a product or idea that would propel them past what their parents acheived in their lifetime.
Somehow, somewhere, those 60s snobs got the idea that people who worked with their hands were beneath them. People, who we call artisans now, just weren’t worth what the ceribral were. They decided that EVERYBODY should be college educated even though not all people have that inclination. Not all men wanted to be a business major – some wanted to be grease monkeys. Not all women wanted to be doctors – some just wanted to be housewives and mothers. This wasn’t good enough for those who knew better than we did.
They truly MESSED STUFF UP!
Now we don’t have the grease monkeys and moms at home to raise our kids. Dads can’t teach their sons to build a bookcase. We have no more iron workers. Lumberjacks are almost extinct.
We NEED these people. There ARE people who really want to do that work. It’s not just a necessity – it’s something we need to VALUE as a culture again.

Posted on September 26, 2012 at 8:02pmAlabama passed a law barring illegals from working in the State. The illegals fled the state. No American workers stepped in to fill the labor void (primarily harvesting crops) so Alabama farmers sued the state to overturn the law. That makes the point that Americans out of work would rather take a check for government benefits than take a job picking crops. It says something great about the work ethic of illegals and something terrible about the work ethic of Americans.

Posted on September 27, 2012 at 11:19amAs a person who regularly tries to hire “Americans” to do manual labor, I absolutely agree with you. They are on welfare, have been on it all their lives, their children & parents are on it, and they see any kind of work that requires them to be up at a certain time beneath them. It doesn’t matter how much you are willing to pay – it just isn’t worth it to them because they are lazy.
As for all the comments about how cheap and greedy farmers are – you are showing your Union mentality ignorance. Farmers would LOVE to sell their products for more money. The great American people are UNWILLING to pay more for what American farmers produce. American farmers not only have to compete with each other, but they have to compete with the price fixing from other nations, where the labor truly gets $0.50/hr. Anyone running a “hobby” farm (~20 acres) isn’t breaking even. It’s why “organic” got such a huge push – it bloats the price for hobby farmers enough that they can either break even or maybe even get a little above water. I don’t know any hobby farmers that don’t have a primary earner that brings cash into the endeavor and many went from advanced farming techniques to “organic” simply to bring in the bucks. No one likes to hear that Americans have largely become a lazy, indolent, blood suckers – it ruins our Union inspired self image. Well, we are, and until we recognize it, we’ll never correct it.
