Utah State Senator Chastises Reid for Claiming Romney’s ‘Not the Face of Mormonism’

People who share the same faith often embrace divergent political ideologies. This is certainly the case when it comes to Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.
Both are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but despite sharing a faith allegiance, their theoretical constructs couldn’t be more oppositional. On Monday, these differences came to a head, when Reid took aim at Romney’s faith, claiming that he is “not the face of Mormonism.” Following these comments, Utah state Sen. Ben McAdams (D), also a Mormon, chastised Reid and defended Romney.
According to CNN, the Nevada Democrat made his anti-Romney claims on Monday during a conference call with reporters. At the time the statements were made, Reid was speaking about the notion that LDS adherents in his state purportedly don’t view Romney as the face of the faith.
“[Romney's] coming to a state where there are a lot of members of the LDS Church,” Reid explained. “They understand that he is not the face of Mormonism.”

The comments mark the first time that Reid has invoked the presidential candidate’s faith as a point of criticism. Despite the senator’s claims, The Salt Lake Tribune notes that others have praised the presidential candidate on the religious front:
In contrast, other prominent Mormons have thanked Romney for presenting a positive image of the church.
J.W. Marriott, head of the Marriott hotel chain and a family friend of the candidate, told Romney’s church congregation in Wolfeboro, N.H., that Romney’s presidential run has been good for the Utah-based faith.
“There has never been as much positive attention to the church, thanks to the wonderful campaign of Mitt Romney and his family,” Marriott said, according to news reports.
Even on the Democratic front, not everyone is comfortable with the criticisms that Reid has thrown at Romney. Take, for instance, McAdams, a Democratic political leader who is also the executive director of the national LDS Democrats Caucus. Rather than supporting Reid’s claims against Romney, he lambasted them.
“I for one don’t want to engage in the business of whether Mitt Romney or Harry Reid is devout by my standards,†McAdams said in an interview with The Daily. “I don’t think that it is appropriate to measure somebody’s faith or how they exercise their faith.â€
McAdams also added that, despite not agreeing with all of the candidate’s politics, he’s “proud of Mitt Romney.” In the end, like Marriot, the senator believes that Romney’s candidacy “is bringing a positive might to Mormons.”

Reid took his criticisms beyond merely claiming that Romney isn’t the face of Mormonism. The politician responded to an opinion piece by Gregory A. Prince on The Huffington Post, which focused upon Romney’s now-infamous comments about the 47 percent of Americans who embrace government handouts.
In the article, Prince asked readers not to judge the Mormon faith based on Romney and his statements — a sentiment that Reid obviously agrees with.
“He said that Romney has sullied the religion that he, Prince and Romney share,” Reid explained on the conference call. “And he’s so disappointed that in his words, ‘It’s a good religion and he’s hiding from it.’”
Romney’s faith has been a focal point at various times throughout the campaign. While the Democrats have pledged not to make it a campaign issue (specifically on the basis that it could be viewed as discriminatory), Reid’s critiques are noteworthy. After all, he’s a Mormon going after a fellow member of the faith, giving him more flexibility in the comments he can make against Romney.

Last I looked Romney never has claimed to be and Ambassador of the Mormon Church, he’s running for President of the United States. If the Mormon Church thought he was so bad, they would denounce his claim to being Mormon.
After all, BO and MO claimed to sit in Jeremiah Wright’s church for 20 years, and he was a lousy member there if he never listened to the sermons that were preached. Obama doesn’t even represent the people in his church it seems, he represents the Muslims instead given his recent comments…’

Posted on September 26, 2012 at 12:09pmAccording to Wikipedia, Harry Reid is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. But I still don’t see where he has a right to pass judgement on Romney’s faith. In his bio on wiki, doesn’t say that he is a spiritual leader of his church, or that he even attends regularly. Ben McAdams is also a member of the Church, and Mitt Romney was at one point a Bishop of his ward of the church.
Seems Reid and McAdams are Democrats first and Mormons second.

Posted on September 26, 2012 at 12:37pm@ I am We the People, In America, free speech is more important than anything else. By putting up a petition to have someone excommunicated from their church over his point of view is saying you do not believe in freedom of speech. Freedom of speech protects the individual from harm from their speech even if 99% of the people disagree. This is what I have been talking about on other posts about all of you that are voting for Mitt Romney just because you are afraid of another four years of Obama, rather than looking at the violations to the peoples voice. Both the Democrats and Republicans at their conventions, pushed agendas over the voice of their delegates and the voice of their constituents. This has got to end. If we the people do not stand up top this, then we must not deserve the Bill of Rights. What is wrong with everyone? I do not like Harry Reid and I hope that Nevada never reelects him again, but I am not going to sign a petition just because I do not like what he is saying. That is for Nevadans to decide at the polls.
I believe that we may have one chance to get our country back, and that is by sending a clear message to both parties that we are Mad as HeII and we are not going to take it anymore. Third Party one time, send the message, stop both parties from continuing down the path of tyranny. Vote Gary Johnson, it can be done.

One poster said that Free Speech is protected. Yeah, ole Harry can exercise his free speech all he wants but he doesn’t need to be an enrolled Mormon to exercise his rights. He has a moral duty to his religion that includes complying with the Mormon’s 13 Articles of Faith which includes not bearing false witness against another. . In the summer of 2009 he was invited to speak to BYU students and afterwards he was interviewed by the campus press. He declared that ‘he’ was correct and that the LDS Leaders should all get behind Harry and follow him on his political agenda.

As far as that goes, I would not want to be part of a church that pushes for excommunication on anyone. I will follow Christs teachings and I do not think Christ would be for banding against someone and kicking them down the road, but would try and get them aside and council them. That would be more of a Christian way. Hate begets hate, love begets love. I always though true Christians believed in the latter.

Our purpose is to: provide factual material in printed and electronic form. This includes our bi-monthly newsletter Mormonism Researched, website, books, tracts, and tapes.
Take the gospel directly to the Mormon people by conducting outreaches at Mormon events such as temple openings and pageants. Provide individual counseling with those who are questioning their Mormon faith, as well as help those who need information to share their faith with those in Mormonism.
Educate the Body of Christ by speaking in churches, Bible colleges, seminaries, and conferences. We desire to serve all Christians who honor the fundamental tenets of the Christian faith as revealed in the Bible.
We at Mormonism Research Ministry resolve to accomplish the above in a manner that honors the Lord Jesus Christ. Our goal is not just to give compelling arguments that show Mormonism to be in error, but to be used by the Holy Spirit to see lives changed for God’s glory.

Excommunication in the LDS Church doesn’t work like that, and excommunication isn’t appropriate in this case even if as a member I can’t fathom his opinions or perspectives. His comments about Romney are completely out of line, rude, stupid, and probably liable, but as others have said, we all believe in free speech and the only speech worth protecting is that which you don’t agree with.
What is I think appropriate is for “We the People” (that’s us not just the person posting by that name) to petition or simply start raising the demand for Harry to resign his position in the Senate not only as Majority leader but as a Senator. (The Dems do this all the time over stuff like hookers, theft, tax evasion etc so long as it is a GOP congressman accused.)
Harry should resign for: False accusations, deceptive statements, slander without substance on a presidential candidate, his handling of the “Affordable Health Care” bill lack of transparency, misleading the American people on the content of that bill, failure to defend the Constitution. He should also be investigated on his finances. He has ONLY ever been a politician and his salaries cannot explain his 10 Mil net worth. In the last four years alone he has gone from approximately 5Mil to 10Mil in worth on a 190K salary, coincidentally leading the health care bill? I bet not. “The word on the street is” he is profiting unethically, if it were not so he would release his finance records for the last 10 ye

@DarkJello, I do not see this site as an anti-mormon site so much as a true Christian site. The purpose of a Christian is to teach salvation of sin through Christs love. In Ephesians, Paul wrote, “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” (2:8-9)
The Gospel of John puts it simply, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” (3:16) Jesus said that, “he who is forgiven little, loves little” (Luke 7:47). “by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain” (1 Corinthians 15:10). “Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God” (Romans 5:1-2).

I guess I would not want you as my attorney. All I know is that as a Christian, I try to spread the true gospel of Jesus and the fact that it is through him and his love for you that you will be in heaven. The Mormon Church teaches that “Repenting of only some sins never results in complete forgiveness.” Jesus said that, “he who is forgiven little, loves little” Ephesians 2:8-9; “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”
I believe that all of us sin everyday, even the Bishops of the Mormon Church. It is by Gods gift of Christ’s saving grace that we will have everlasting life. You first have to admit that you sin and then you must ask for forgiveness. You try not to sin again, but of course, we are only human, and that is why God gave his only son in order to save us from ourselves. No man can ever be a God as no man is worthy, and if you think you are, you have issues that only God through Christ can help you with.

I do not believe it is the right of a church, even one I belong to, to get the city to make zones where free speech is outlawed. But, that is just me. I also do not think it is appropriate to hand out flyers in front of a church that downgrades the church, and believe me, I have a few problems with my church. And it looks to me like it was the Living Hope Christian Fellowship that actually filed with the ACLU, but I do think that one of the staff members of Mormonism Research Ministry, Eric Johnson, that helped them with contacting the ACLU. While MRM is not actually a party to the lawsuit by Eric Johnson’s comments its evident that mrm is in favor of it. Eric brags about spending his life opposing the LDS faith. I have exchanged emails with Mr Johnson all the way back in the late nineties when he expressing his displesure with the efforts of the LDS faith and the Catholic Church for monetarily supporting the Defense of Marriage
act in California. He is also critical of the LDS Church’s welfare program because it mostly takes care of its members. He doesnt seem to agree that taking care of your own answers any of the problems of the poverty in the world. A very strange view but he seems to have many of them against the LDS faith.
Please don’t take my dislike of the mrm personally but they are what they are and I think people should know where they stand when it comes to the LDS Church.
As for doctrine I tend to pick examples of someone who shows the fruit I am looking for when I model my life and behavior after theirs. Jesus was the living word and example for how we should live our lives not just a sacrificial lamb. “Christian” is a verb and not a noun in my book. I am only a Christian when I am doing Christlike things. You dont magically become a Christian after saying one prayer, doing one work or ordinance. To truly follow Christ we must strive to have Christlike behavior everyday.

Posted on September 26, 2012 at 7:16pmFor those actually interested in context, the original Prince article that Reid is despicably parroting doesn’t have a problem with anything Romney actually believes to be religious truth. what Reid and Prince claim, instead, is that calling the 47% not worth caring about is not what their religion teaches. Of course they’re correct about what the LDS teach about charity–it’s a spectacularly charitable organization, and its members individually are even more generous for the most part. What they’re lying through their teeth about (which makes them hypocrites, because lying is ALSO what the Church teaches against) is that somehow Romney doesn’t care about the poor just because he’s not going to count on the votes of government-dependent voters.
But then again, it’s politically useful to paint your opponents as racist bigot homophobes who want everyone to drink dirty water and all the trees on the planet to die. Reid’s biggest crime is that his political playbook is so old. The libs’ biggest crime is they still believe his tripe after all these years.
p.s @ Mad: mrm may be a kinder gentler version, but if they were TRULY about pointing out differences and letting people decide, they wouldn’t have to fabricate, distort, or revise their stuff that’s been debunked so often. “Anti-mormon” isn’t invective: it’s just neutral description. They’re set up in opposition to, not merely an alternative to as they claim.

He soaked me for $8500.00 and would not let me out of my lease, and seemed to not care about my families situation. I figured it was because I was Wesleyan and not Mormon. The Bishop lived next door, and he seemed like a nice enough person and the house was one block from the Mormon church. They tried many times to get my family to join, even saying we should join now because they were going to get us one day anyway. He even told me that maybe if I had joined the church, the tragedy to our son would not have happened. I have had a hard time with that one. I’m sorry for your personal loss. To imply that tragedy in one’s life is a reflection of their worthiness before the Lord is silly since the Lord Himself suffered more than any of us!
I’ve never seen people treat someone in pain the way you described within my circles in the Church – but rather attempt to follow Paul’s admonition to “Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.” Romans 12:15. Further, we as as a Church were taught by Christ the following: “And remember in all things the poor and the needy, the sick and the afflicted, for he that doeth not these things, the same is not my disciple.” D&C 52:40.
I don’t expect you to convert to our religion, but please, get to know more of us and you’ll see that we strive to be like Christ – even though we’re all still human and each make mistakes. :)

Posted on September 26, 2012 at 2:01pmHarry hasn’t attended church in two decades. I doubt he has paid any tithing. Harry is disgusting for what he said. He owes Mitt an apology. However, people need to know that these are all distractions being presented by the left so you don’t stick to the issues.

Posted on September 26, 2012 at 10:47amIt seems there is much more than just political affairs from Reid against Mitt Romney. First, no taxes paid; then system manipulation, and now a clash of Mormons. I don’t think Romney is hiding anything. Maybe Romney knows something about Reid that he is fighting against in advance.

Posted on September 26, 2012 at 2:12pmThe senate ethic committee needs to file a charge against Reid. Reid has used his position to unfairly and totally partisan base attack Romney with baseless slanderous statement. Fact is Reid is unfit to even be a member of congress his actions are a stain on our check and balance system.

Posted on September 26, 2012 at 10:36amI just called the office of the President of LDS church to complain again about Reid. I told her I know the church isn’t political but …. went on to make my case against Reid. I could hear her gasp….. she was bitting her tongue.

Posted on September 26, 2012 at 10:28amHarry Reid is NOTHING of what I have learned a Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints church member to be. Mitt Romney, on the other hand is an impeccable and sterling example of his faith by his kind service to others. Harry Reid is the one of the biggest liars, and most corrupt political figures of our time.

Posted on September 26, 2012 at 10:24amIf Harry Reid would be held up by Mormonism, to the standards that Harry Reid attempts to hold Romney to the same standards, Reid would be declared a demon and banished from the Mormon religion.
…and the closest thing Gaybama comes to Christianity, was the time he laid his hand on the Book and lied while taking his oath of office…

Posted on September 26, 2012 at 10:23amI’m wondering when Harry Reid got appointed God and tasked with judging his fellow Christians. Seems to me he is way below that pay grade. WAY below.
He’s the one sullying his faith.

Posted on September 26, 2012 at 10:22amBen: Funny how you support the guy who will DOMINATE the ticket in Utah this year and toss your party affiliation under the bus? You run the LDS Democrats? How cant you see your party has been Hi-Jacked by the Radical Progressive anti-american party? You should consider changing parties after elected. Make this statement to maybe save your run for County Mayor otherwise, the line vote will bury you.

Posted on September 26, 2012 at 10:18amKeep digging your own grave Mr. Reid, then come November throw yourself in it. What a hypocrite, Reid constantly lies, is that what he wants the LDS church portrayed as? Reid is already in a tornado of issues and is now doing everything he can to increase the debris so the focus might not be on him. What he doesn’t realize is that every little things he throws out increases the odds something will come back to bite him in the butt!

Posted on September 26, 2012 at 10:18amSenator Reid is actually speaking about himself. The church does not support abortion in any way. Mr. Reid does. One example of many. He has defamed Romney publicly and made accusations without proof. He has offered no apologies when proven he was wrong in his accusations. He says he has support from many LDS faithful in Utah. Flat out lie. His approval here would most likely be below 10 percent. Mr Reid should look to himself and his actions. How this man is still a member in good standing is befuddling.

Posted on September 26, 2012 at 10:15amI, for years, thought that Harry Reid was, at best, a Jack Mormon. At worst, an ex-mormon. I don’t see how a member of a church that values life and freedom more than any other could be so supportive of abortion and dependence.
Harry Reid, you have sullied your religion. You’ve sold your soul for power, you bear false witness without regret, and you support the slaughter of the unborn. Some Mormon you are.

The people of Nevada should be ashamed of themselves for re-electing Reid, he is incompetent, and going by what he says, not very religious.
