Wild Helmet Cam Vid Claims to Show Heroic U.S. Soldier Drawing Taliban Gunfire Away From ‘Pinned Down’ Squad
A wild video posted on YouTube allegedly shows an unnamed U.S. soldier and his squad engaging in a machine gun fight with Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan — all captured by the soldiers helmet cam. The video also shows that same soldier risking his life and heroically drawing fire away from his fellow soldiers so they could get to safety.
According to the description of the video, the soldier and his squad were doing “recon” and intelligence gathering outside a village in the hyper-violent Kunar Province of Afghanistan when they were pelted with heavy machine gun fire from Taliban insurgents.
After seeing that his entire squad was “pinned down,” the soldier exposed himself “to draw fire so my squad could get to safety.” He was reportedly shot four times.
Via the YouTube video’s description, the soldier reportedly behind the camera explains how it all went down:
“I got a hit a total of 4 times. My helmet cam died and i made it down the mountain on my own. I was also hit in the side of my helmet and my eye pro was shot off of my face. We were doing overwatch on the village to recon and gather intel. I was point heading down the face of the hill with the LT. when we got hit. the rest of the squad was pinned down by machine gun fire. I didn’t start the video until a few mins into the firefight for obvious reasons. I came out into the open to draw fire so my squad could get to safety.”
He goes on: “A round struck the tube by my hand of the 203 grenade launcher which knocked it out of my hands. When I picked the rifle back up it was still functional but the grenade launcher tube had a nice sized 7.62 cal bullet hole in it and was rendered useless. ”
The video description also says no bullets “penetrated his body armor, and he made it home with no permanent injuries.”
The footage is “part of an ongoing documentation of the war in Afghanistan,” the description states. War footage from Afghanistan is reportedly uploaded regularly here.

With just a fraction of the money spent on the two wars, we could have beefed up special ops 100x, and probably would have killed bin Laden and dismantled al-qaeda years before we did.

All the money we spend in Afghanistan, and most of the Al-Qaeda brass we kill are in Pakistan, and they’re killed by drones and small troops on the ground, no Army brigades rolling in.

Posted on September 26, 2012 at 10:55pmNo, you cannot win or fight a war against an idea. You CAN fight and win a war against a nation and its’ people; and in such a war, total warfare is the only sane and rational way to win with minimized losses to your side. We should not be playing war with 10 men at a time and we should not be occupying foreign lands. Any war should be the last ditch effort to protect and defend the Citizens of this nation. It should be so violent and bloody for the opposing forces that their children’s children will look back on that war and see it as a warning to themselves that a war of aggression will net them their demise. To think otherwise is ignorant.

Posted on September 26, 2012 at 10:57pmActually, detonation of a small nuclear device somewhere in the Middle East is LONG overdue and would do WONDERS for an attitude correction in that part of the world to both the big and little guys. If the Mullah’s and Imams get the message that they WILL be dispatched to personally meet their Prophet Mohammad, the world would be a better and safer place. As for the loving and peaceful Muslims that I keep reading about, perhaps the message that a similar detonation could easily be replicated in Mecca would provide a wealth of information regarding the radicals in their Mosques.
Just a thought………

The Russians were right the first time. These people are barbarians. And until they adopt a mindset that don’t involve killing anyone who offend them, their views, or their precious religion… they must be treated as such.

You would think after Vietnam they would have learned their lesson. You would think after the Afghans kicked the Russians out they would learn but no! They dont understand they are fighting ideology. You cannot kill an idea. It doesnt hurt doesnt cry doesnt love and until those in power understand this more troops will die. Not an issue of spec ops running it. Its an issue of engaging them without the rules! We have rules they dont!

Posted on September 27, 2012 at 10:40amJohnLarson has a point.
I would say that we should with:
1. Closing the borders, use American troops to defend our borders.
2. Stop immigration from Muslim nations.
3. Stop giving visas to Muslim nations.
None of which where done, the borders are wide open, and we have had an increase of immigration.
Instead the Bush administration and now the Obama followed suit with: (Mitt “The Weathervane” will do the same, if elected)
1. Patriot Act, so they can keep list of those of us that read TheBlaze and Infowars, and listen to our conversations and read our emails.
2. TSA Tyrannical Sexual Assault, that is perpetrated on our grand parents and children, while not checking young Arab men in the fear of being called racist.
3. Killed 10,000 of Americans bravest defending borders in Afghanistan and Iraq. And we have an untold thousands that have lost limbs, and suffered many wounds and trauma, that will be with them for life.
4. Killed 1.5 Million Arabs ( Like that will make them likes us betters!)
Our soldiers are being used like disposable pawns by weak kneed politicians, and the Industrial Military Complex, that looks to wars as an investment. We have not fought a real war since WW2! Every one since has not had clear goals. Our military could have easily won everyone of the wars, if the politicians stayed out of it. The question is should we be fighting them in the first place?

Posted on September 27, 2012 at 11:24amPerhaps we should look at why there is a terrorism threat to the USA?
He never had problems with the Irish Republican Army? Though terrorist, they did not threaten us! Silly you might say, but is it treason es to ask why the Muslim Terrorist attack us?
We always here that there are 3 reasons for why terrorist hate us:
1. We are successful and don’t live like it is the 7th century!
2. Israel and our support of her.
3. Because of our Pop culture and Hollywood & porn. (There they do have a point, though personally I opt for not watching as opposed to blow myself up)
Neither one of those hold water and here is why:
1. Japan, Switzerland, South Korea, Norway, Singapore and Chile have not been attacked despite being successful!
2. We have supported Israel since 1948, why did it take 30 years or a generation for the Arabs to hate America?
3. Regarding the Pop culture, Hollywood and porn. We see the same throughout all of Europe, and Asia, and those nations have not been attacked!
So this begs the question: What did we do that others didn’t?
1. Overthrew the elected president of Iran and put in the Shaw a Dictator.
2. We trained and armed the Taliban to defeat the Soviets.
3. We armed and trained Saddam to fight Khomeini
4. Us propping up Mubarak
5. Us having military base in Saudi Arabia, which was a major grievance of Osama and the Taliban. (Imagine Chaves having a military base in Memphis!)

He and your supreme leader Obama has you and thousands of others that are over there believing you’re fighting a war when the whole time you’re NATION BUILDING. Ask yourself why it was for so many years the world respected the US. It might be because there was a time when we waged war, everybody knew we came to destroy. Now what is it they have ya’ll doing? Shaking hands with your enemies, handing out candy to the kiddies so they might believe you are there to do some good all the while your brothers and sisters are getting blown away by some dimwit taliban that still had enough brains to wait for you to trust them because they know you’re not there to kill them. Here’s some food for thought. Declare you’ve won and get out now. No one is going to care 5 or 10 years from now because they won’t be waiting for the son or daughter to come home in a coffin. If you don’t want to do that and you want to continue the fight, well then fight. Tell the politicians to go to he!! and bomb the crap out of them for a week straight. Tell them they have 24 hrs to get their women and children out and then lay waste to every village in that country. Bring back napalm if you have to. Posted on September 27, 2012 at 4:00amThis guy is the Dumbest son-of-a-b!@#$ I have ever seen. He is running around upright, in the open, on the contact side of the hill, alone and wasting rounds shooting into the air instead of well placed shots at the enemy positions. This is the reason why we have so many needless casualties. If he spent more time practicing basic infantry skills and less time worrying about helmet cameras, we would have a better story to tell. After getting hit, he stays in the open where he was hit to begin with and just cries out for help. It is obvious he can still move and return fire, so get the hell out of the way of enemy fire! I am an Infantry Platoon Sergeant and this kind of stuff really ****** me off! Who the hell is teaching this guy how to operate in a combat zone? I don’t have enough space to mention all the errors that lead to this guy getting wounded. I would like to see his leadership get a foot in the **** for letting soldiers go out on patrol who are obviously under-trained. This is a crime to the men and women who volunteer for service. They trust their leadership to prepare them and this guy’s seniors failed him. I will pray to the rest of the unit, they need it.

This helmet camera crap is nothing more than a mechanism so that cowardly, criminal politicians can play soldier too, all from the safety of their armchairs. They sit back and poke their noses in the business of other countries, and then send our guys in to back up THEIR big mouths. Then, after calling in their secretaries, and ordering a couple of pizzas, they watch as our guys get shot and/or kill the bad guys. Just like a fricking video game. They are disgusting. Get those damn cameras out of there.

Posted on September 27, 2012 at 9:13amI mostly agree with Crus8r. Having his cheese out in the wind wasn’t his best decision. Why he chose to move down ALONE without a clear idea of where the small arms fire was coming from, I can’t even guess. Throwing lead back down the hill aimlessly, changing magazines out in the open when you can see the small arms fire hitting the dirt around him wasn’t a good technique either. And continuallyt shouting out, making sure that the shooters don’t forget about you wasn’t a great decision. I know the guy was hit, and was extremely scared, as anyone would be, so I’m not trivializing the predicament he was in, and I do not know about the 10 minutes prior to the video. As for the gear, you can see how slow the guy was moving. These troops carry WAY too much crap with them. All so beaureacrats and lawyers can micromanage the petroleum and/or poppy wars the Federal Reserve demands we engage in in order to keep the supply of borrowed money flowing. Did that man need to BE THERE? No,. he did not need to be there. In reality, he was equipped and then hit out in the open for no damn good reason. After all, we KILLED the boogie man, right?

Posted on September 26, 2012 at 11:01pmI’ll reiterate what woodye has said. This Soldier did a dumb thing. You do not walk out onto open terrain without cover or concealment. It is suicide and instead of helping the rest of his team, he probably single handedly took them out of the fight. You see, by making this stupid decision, he injured himself and took himself and at least 1, probably 2 more men out of the firefight to rescue him. Even if they didn’t retrieve him right away, him screaming “I’m shot!”, probably did not help the marksmanship of the remaining men who were fit to fight. It both distracted them and I’m sure it caused them some emotional excitement that made it even harder to stay on target.

Nonetheless, an incredible, gutsy act of bravery for his buddies. I was cringing at the sight of those bullets hitting the ground around him. Can’t say I would have had the courage to do the same. From what I could ascertain, the terrain was rough and even if it was flat, that would be one suicidal charge.
Seems to me that there was not alot of covering fire while he was moving, despite his warning that he was going to move. But than again, the description of the clip was he was maneuvering to draw fire so his squad could move to a better position where they are not pinned down. Pretty much indicates to me that this guy was willing to lay down his life for his buddies. Hit four times, and he keeps fighting; thank God he came out of that firefight alive.

I don’t understand why he was so exposed for so long, and it appears that he never glanced behind him to see where his buddies were… so it appeared that he was making a clear and potentially singular target for the enemy, and they finally hit him. At that moment he no longer was effective as a combatant, but required evacuation. He is constantly yelling “I’m hit”… which only causes others to attempt to reach him using the same open terrain. His actions definately were brave, but could have caused others to lose their lives in attempting to provide him aid. I am a veteran and his movements didn’t seem to be coordinated by a team leader, and his weapon fire appeared to be aimed high and long range so exposing himself didn’t seem correct. I wish him a full recovery.

At 500 yards, the 124 grain 7.62×39 bullet drops 85 inches. At the same range, a 55 grain 5.56 bullet only drops 44 inches. You obviously learned all your weapon knowledge by playing the PS3.

obviously, youve never been in a firefight beyond 50 to 100 meters. The m855 greatly outranges the7.62x39mm and the 5.45x39mm. Not to mention the best ak’s, either type, are at best a 3-6 minute weapon, even firing the best ammo available. Ive made robust hits past 800 meters, using m16a4, trijicon, and mk262 ammo. Those who say we should issue 7.62x51mm rifles to everyone, well our hit percentage would drop, dramatically. The m16/m4, using m855 or mk262 is a very effective combination, and is relatively easy to get good hits with. I know, been there, done that, and was a STS.

Posted on September 27, 2012 at 10:40am@Muffythetuffy: Simply not true. The 5.56 in the Stoner design is capable of hitting a man sized target out to 500-600 meters typically. The 7.62×39 out of an AK is considered a 300-400 meter effective range for point targets.
Now the 7.62x54R round is another matter and more likely to be used for long range work by locals in Afghanistan. It’s ballistics is similar to the .308, but then we aren’t comparing infantry rifles anymore either.

Posted on September 27, 2012 at 9:05amNo question that it took courage to do what he did. It also was a not to bright thing to do. Becoming a bullet magnet while isolating yourself from you squad is just asking to be killed of the “stupids’.
I had a First Shirt who took me aside and told me the following: You will lose men in combat. Some will die. Some will be wounded. A soldier can die bravely or poorly but no soldier should die of the “stupids”. It was my to prevent the “stupids”.
I later learned what he meant.

Posted on September 27, 2012 at 1:33amMurphys Laws of War:
Never draw fire; it irritates everyone around you.
Density of fire increases proportionally to the curiousness of the target.
Never stand when you can sit, never sit when you can lie down, never stay awake when you can sleep.
Suppressive fires – won’t.
You are not Superman; Marines and fighter pilots take note.
Try to look unimportant; the enemy may be low on ammo and not want to waste a bullet on you.
Teamwork is essential; it gives the enemy other people to shoot at.
Don’t look conspicuous; it draws fire. For this reason, it is not at all uncommon for aircraft carriers to be known as bomb magnets.
Incoming fire has the right of way.
If the Platoon Sergeant can see you, so can the enemy.
The enemy never watches until you make a mistake.
Murphy was a grunt.

Stupid, stupid, stupid…

Posted on September 26, 2012 at 7:29pmI agree – seemingly heroic – but then he’s screaming “I’m hit” which means he’s expecting assistance. So the squad that he was trying to save by drawing fire, now has to risk their lives to provide him with covering fire or medical assistance.
Not sure how I feel about it – seems counter productive.

Posted on September 26, 2012 at 7:26pmThe helmet cam makes it deceptive – it does look like he’s just blasting away – but that’s because the cam is mounted high on his helmet – in fact, you’re looking down on top of his Trijicon ACOG – that red stripe is part of the fiber optics. He was aiming.

Posted on September 26, 2012 at 8:22pmHe’s right, John. The stupidazz endangered his unit by leaving them, endangered himself by going to an exposed and indefensible position, and endangered his unit when he was wounded while doing all the above.
