Israeli Defense Force Office Posts Self-Defense Instruction Video — Starring a Female Instructor Kicking Butt!
Known more famously for posting nosecone videos of airstrikes on terrorist hideouts and hidden weapons caches, the spokesman’s office of the Israeli Defense Forces is branching out into other genres. Its latest video, “Learn How to Defend Yourself: IDF Style,” stars one of its, shall we say, camera-friendly female combat instructors demonstrating martial arts techniques for avoiding abduction.
Twenty-year-old Krav Maga instructor Sgt. Rachel Shir demonstrates on-camera what she teaches IDF soldiers to avoid being kidnapped.
The IDF explains:
Krav Maga is a self-defense system that was invented by the Israel Defense Forces in order to ensure that both combat and non-combat soldiers know how to stay safe in every situation. All IDF soldiers are taught how to defend themselves from abductions, stabbing attempts and much more.
As two actors approach her on a dark, isolated street, Rachel explains:
When walking alone at night, be aware of your surroundings, stay focused and be ready for any attack to occur.
If attacked when you’re out at night by yourself, use everything in your hand to defend yourself.
When your attacker is stunned, strike him in the groin to neutralize him as quickly as possible.
All this naturally prompted some cheeky comments on YouTube including:
“She can abduct me anytime.”
“We don’t turn the other cheek. We kick back in the balls.”
“The UN will vote that she used disproportionate force! :-)”
There is a universal draft in Israel for both men and women. The latter serve a mandatory two years in the IDF. Like in the U.S., the recruitment of women to combat positions followed debate among military leaders due to concern over the potential abductions of female soldiers. Abductions are a very real threat to Israeli soldiers, the most recent case being Gilad Shalit who was snatched from Israel and held in Gaza for more than five years.
The issue of women in combat was highlighted last week when a female sniper serving in the IDF named only as “Corporal S.” was commended after she shot dead a terrorist carrying explosives who engaged her battalion along Israel’s border with Egypt. In the gunfight, her male colleague Cpl. Netanel Yahalomi was killed. “One of the terrorists exploded right in front of us,” she told the Israeli news site Ynet.
After the battle, the IDF criticized the Israeli media for focusing on another woman in the co-ed battalion who allegedly took cover behind bushes fearing she would become a kidnapping target for the terrorists. The IDF stated that she was never ordered to storm the terrorists.
This is the second video the IDF has released on self-defense. In the first, Rachel explains what to do if faced with various scenarios including getting your hair pulled, if grabbed from behind, and when attacked from the front.

Posted on September 27, 2012 at 1:05pmI’ve been interested in Krav Maga for several years. It’s a real world art that does not shy away from using anything to including lethal force to get out of a situation safely.
In my opinion it’s one of the few arts that really does offer a woman or a smaller man a chance against a determined opponent.
A 140 pound woman throwing punches and kicks or even worse trying to wrestle a determined man who weighs 220 is a non starter. Trained or not, most woman are gonna lose, and lose badly.
Krav Maga teaches you to avoid these situations entirely, and when you can’t… run like hell! It’s teaches continuous situtional awareness, and finely tuned paranoia.
…And when you cannot avoid the situation, and you absolutely cannot run, then you fight your opponent like a mad dog using any tool you have, never giving up, and showing ZERO! mercy, and the second you’re free, you run like hell. (That seems to be the gist of the Krav Maga philosophy)
I was sold that this was a good martial art, when I was looking through a Krav Maga book and saw a woman demonstrating how to stab a ball point pen through her attackers eye while he tried to hold her, and another panel showing a woman biting the nose off a potential rapist on top of her.

Posted on September 27, 2012 at 1:40pm@Ranger1965 Tim Larkin of http://www.targetfocustraining.com/ would disagree with your assessment of going against someone who has more body mass than you. Poke around his website and read his bio. For anyone reading this, Larkin’s training can prepare you to defend yourself. But I totally agree with you, Ranger, in that being aware of one’s environment and avoiding such situations in the first place is the best strategy. It sounds like Krav Maga has a lot in common with Larkin’s methods and philosophy. Thanks for your post on Krav Maga. It sounds intriguing.

Posted on September 27, 2012 at 10:34amI’ve been training Krav Maga for about 2 years and it’s awesome. It’s very simple and doesn’t rely on very complicated series of moves for defenses. I love that it’s not made to get you engaged in a long fight, but to quickly and decisively disable your attacker so you can make it home safe. With the right techniques, the size difference between you and the attacker really doesn’t matter. They use the philosophy of defending and simultaneous counter-attacks. Most gyms will give you 2-3 lessons for free because they know you’ll be hooked.

Posted on September 27, 2012 at 12:22pmI took Krav Maga training for a little over a year, until a knee injury forced me to quit the formal classes. If your opponent is not ready for you, as a woman, to be able to defend yourself, then you will have an advantage. Granted if you are 110 pounds and your attacker is 300 pounds it will be more difficult to fight them, but the goal is to end the attack quickly and even 300 pound men can be brought to their knees by a slap to the groin or a jab to the eye. Krav Maga also teaches you how to deal with an attacker that has a weapon.

He also said if they’re stupid enough to start a fight feel free to do what it takes to finish. I had a cousin who was a highly decorated Marine in Vietnam with a habit of getting into bar brawls (and winning them) once he got home. His advice was the faster you finish a fight, the less likely you are to get hurt. The trick to winning any fight is mental attitude. Be willing to maim, or kill the other person if necessary for your survival and don’t hesitate to do so. I believe it was Clint Smith who said “If you’re in a fair fight, your tactics suck.” I am a firm believer in discrete carry. Nothing discourages an attacker like the business end of a large caliber firearm.

It is earned by doing the right thing and by doing right by your family and friends.

Look, I speak from experience. I was TINY in high school. In the 10th grade I was 5′ 2″ and maybe 100lbs. When I graduated I was 6′ 0″ and still only about 170lbs. It wasn’t until I was 24 that I started packing on the mass. In any fight in school I was almost always the smaller guy by far. I lost most fights but I never backed out of a fight. Once I put on the mass it was a different world. I’m the same man, with the same fighting technique, but all of a sudden my punches could do some damage. All of a sudden I could spear dudes and put dudes on the ground. Yes technique is important but only in Disney movies does size and stature not matter.

I don’t think that’s a fair statement. A properly trained woman COULD successfully defend herself against an untrained attacker. Maybe not two guys at once, but this is just a video promoting KM. As I mentioned above BJJ is the most effective grappling art on the planet and was specifically developed so that smaller weaker people could beat larger stronger people. If one were to isolate BJJ a woman could certainly beat a man. No matter what a woman that is well trained is better off than not being trained.

Quickness, speed. strength, accuracy, timing, power, intelligence, and form are something you need in becoming a good fighter. The more advantages you have the better chance of winning you have. If you are strong and can punch hard yet have horrible form and accuracy then it’s almost pointless to be strong since you probably wont’ hit your target. Your form and technique are the most important things to have because everything else is built around that.

That textbook answer is nice and all but real life is far more simple. That is why EVERY major fighting league (boxing, wrestling, mma) separates ffighters on weight. Because they know that a 250lb competent man will crush a 145lb competent man. If this were a Disney special, your logic would prevail. In real life the bigger stronger lion wins 99 out of 100 times.

Maybe on the street with untrained people the stronger person would win, but the Martial Arts was made so that someone who is smaller/weaker has the skills to defend themselves. Just look at the Gracie family and how they have beaten people much, much larger than them because they are masters at BJJ.
I would just try to be more understanding that someone is skilled no matter how small or weak can win against someone who is stronger and bigger. One day you might come across someone who is small and he beats the brakes off of you.

Posted on September 27, 2012 at 3:45pmWow more posturing. Secure men do not go ape$%^t crazy criticizing a guy (truthmonkey) because he is proud of his daughter’s ability. The inability to acknowledge ability and talent in others is a symptom of insecurity. And when he posted his physical stats that was hilarious. Yes we all got it…you are a big tough man…that was the internet equivalent of standing in front of the mirror repeating self-affirmation chants about your manhood. Pathetic.

Spewing crap about self-confidence and insecurity. What kind of sissy feminine crap is that? Are there no more men in America? Do all men just want to group-hug and paint each others’ nails? Please, do men still stand-up to piss or do you guys squat now too?

How many women or girls do you see obliviously walking and talking on their cell phone, or worse yet, texting. Nothing like a tunnel vision focus on a 3X3 screen. That cell will really protect you by making that 911 call so close….not! Not if you are not paying attention to your surroundings. For those who laugh at those texters for tripping and falling into a mall fountain, just think of what a sexual assault can do to rest of one’s life….if they live that long.

Posted on September 27, 2012 at 9:53amAs a martial artist, I have said it before, and will say it again.. It can be a fatal mistake to underestimate the fighting power of a woman whose been trained… Sure, physically they may be weaker, but it doesn’t take a great deal of strength to fight well (if you know what your doing…)
I have personally seen a 60 year-old Chinese woman TOTALLY wail on a 23 year-old 2nd degree black-belt man (and it wasn’t for the kid NOT trying…)…. At first you could see the guy was thinking he would take it easy on her (not sure if because of age, or gender) but she just smiled, and then BAM he was on the ground… Not once, but 3 times…
Now I know this is not a TYPICAL result, but since it can happen, you must approach EVERY situation as if the person you are fighting is just as well trained as you are..
Underestimating an opponent is a foolish beginners mistake….

Posted on September 27, 2012 at 10:07amYou are so right. I have a 17yr old daughter who at 16 said she wanted to be a Marine. I told her last year if she could deal with full contact BJJ classes I would support her going into the Marines.
She is only 125 lbs and kicking the crap out of 250 lbs men with submission etc. They call her the technician. She recently joined her school wrestling team (all boys) they only laughed at her one time and now are all scared to roll with her.
The only catch is that now I have to support her goal of joining the marines. So SEMPER FI !!

Posted on September 27, 2012 at 10:08amIt’s not really just the training. It’s the mindset that needs to be ready, too. Instincts. A normal woman would do anything do defend her child. They tend to fight like angry grizzly mothers defending their cubs. That’s the kind of instinct that needs to be ready when a woman has to defend herself as well. The physical strength also turns out to be pretty irrelevant during an adrenaline rush.
Women are more prone to be attacked simply because they are, yes, smaller and overall physically weaker. That is a simple fact. An attacker will think twice before attacking me (6’8″ male), but he won’t have such reservations attacking the woman I love (5’3″). Someone who’s physically imposing scares off people.
It’s really the same as with carrying guns. When you know that guns are banned, then a criminal has a field day. If the criminal has to consider the fact that guns are not banned and anyone he runs into could be carrying, well, then he’ll think twice (if he has a brain.) Same here. If a woman is trained, even if it’s just basic hints like watching your surroundings, etc, then, if the criminal has to expect it, he will think twice.
Though, the groin kick isn’t really that viable anymore. It’s too famous by now. A safe bet is always going for the eyes.
Fact is: there is no disproportionate force when a woman defends herself against an attacker, because the attack happens to do her harm. Same for men btw. If someone wants to do you harm, waste him. Simp

I call bull crap. You keep posting the same, nonsensical story. The men she would be facing are just as trained as she and would have a natural strength advantage. There is no logic in her being so dominating. It is rare to find a man so dominating. Look at the UFC. 99% win some and loose some. It is an accomplishment to have a win percentage anywhere close to 60%. Your story is fake.

Do you take any form of martial arts classes? By your answers I can tell you don’t, BJJ stands for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. It doesn’t matter if they have similar training and they’re stronger. As long as she does the forms better than other guys they WILL end up on their backs. BJJ doesn’t focus on strength like Karate, but leverage, speed, and focus.

Posted on September 27, 2012 at 3:40pmLet me throw some facts out there from my life.
I’ve wrestled Collegiate, Grecko Roman, and Freestyle as well as boxed and trained in Kung Fu from grade school until my senior year and lately I’ve been training in BJJ when I get the chance. I was really small and had a huge mouth. I wrestled 105 my freshman year and 135 my senior year just to illustrate my size. I’m now 6’1″ and about 195 pounds. I’ve fought most my life being the smaller person in the fight. I never had to cut weight once for wrestling. Now that I’m big when I fight someone I tear them apart. I can tell you all from first hand knowledge that training makes a huge difference but so does size. If someone has 100 pounds on you, you better hope they have no training at all and you’re not only trained but in shape. I suggest women stay armed with a firearm or at least a pocket knife.

Posted on September 27, 2012 at 9:40amI have to say this video makes me smile. I get so annoyed of people who are not aware of surroundings at all times. Being aware of your surroundings helps to keep you safe plus it allows for more courtesy. I get fuming mad when a congregation of families take up the whole isle and are oblivious to the 10 other families who need to get through and the young lady wearing short shorts and plugs in her ears walking or jogging down the street. I use to run 5 miles every morning where 2 main highways intersected and a large portion was wooded behind a housing development I never wore a Walkman;) because I new I would not be able to hear the things I could not see. I always made eye contact with anyone I saw and looked at cars so they knew I knew they were there. I always play a what if game in my mind so that I’m always looking for places to go houses where people are home incase someone came up to me I could go banging on doors. I teach my boys to always be aware of what is around them eventually it will just become a part of who you are and you will just do it. My husband says I am the most observant person he knows, which says alot. You can never pay to much attention to your surroundings I think. It helps in almost all situations whether it causes you to move out of the way at the store or pull off the road because you see an out of control car coming from behind. This is part of the problem in this country we are so consumed with our selves we don’t notice anything else.

Posted on September 27, 2012 at 9:27amWhen properly trained a woman can easily take down a guy that has 100+ pounds on her. Personally I have no issue with women in combat roles, I’ll admit when a woman can shoot better than me. I do believe that women in combat roles should have more training than guys, most guys do have a physical advantage. Did you know that Russia in WW2 and also in the N Ireland and S Ireland fighting most snipers were women?

Who cares if it is fake? The idea is to show people that a focussed and aware woman can and will defend herself against a couple of undisciplined thugs who spend their time preying on people in the street. So can I, and maybe so can you. 90% of my male friends are physically inferior to my wife. I am proud of her self confidence, yet consider myself her defender. Does it make you feel useless that a woman might defend herself? Why don’t you stop telling women what they can’t do, and start telling men what they can?

Normally you would be correct, but there is a BIG difference between gym rats rolling around on the mat (which is the sorry style that is UFC Style fighting which although aggressive does not lend well to reality, since in reality people WILL ACTUALLY TRY TO KILL YOU… ) So in that regard, YES, it is hard to overcome a large weight dis-advantage…
But as a Kung-fu instructor who has dabbled and fought against MANY different styles of fighting (including MMA styles) there is a MAJOR difference between a gym fight, and a REAL fight…
UFC fighters don’t gouge eyes out, they don’t punch in the throat, they don’t grab and crush testicles, or rip ears off…. Which are ALL things a real martial artist will do in a REAL fight…
In a REAL fight, gender doesn’t matter… Knowledge, Skill, and a will to KILL goes WAY farther than size or strength… If you don’t know that, then go pick a real life-or-death fight, and try to act like a UFC guy… Let us know how that works for you (once you get out of the hospital…).
Your comment isn’t really stupid, just ignorant… Although it IS rare for a woman to have the required “Killer Instinct” to be a deadly fighter, some have it, so you MUST assume they all do, less you end up on the wrong side of someone who does…

I agree with some of what you’re saying but to say UFC is a sorry style of fighting is silly. UFC is the closet to a real fight you can get. Obviously you can’t train to actually eye gouge. I mean I’ve been doing MMA for 10 years and also do amateur fights (just like UFC but not professionally) and that stuff is no joke.

Actually, Kung-Fu rarely wins against simple Greco style wrestling. Again, I refer to the UFC and all other major MMA leagues. In fact, I can’t think of a single MMA champ who specialize in Kung-Fu. The fact is, in real life it comes down to punches, kicks, and grapples. All of which require form and STRENGTH. The Hollywood take-downs, and hip-tosses are all in the movies. In real life it comes down to brawn 9 out of 10 times.
Technique only gets you so far. That is why EVERY majoy fighting league (boxing, wrestling, MMA) separates by weight. I don’t care how great of a form you have, if you are 5′ 1″ 125lbs boxing a 6′ 2″ 240lb man, your punches will have little effect. Mass matters.

Your right… In a fight (unlike MMA) there are no rules, and EVERY “dirty trick” is a valid move (as long as it punishes your opponent…)
That is MMA’s big downfall, I tell ALL of my students who say they wanna do MMA, that they are learning from the wrong person.. I don’t teach sports… MMA is a sport as there are rules….. Martial Arts (especially Kung-fu which teaches open minded fighting so its adaptable) is a WAY OF LIFE which has no rules… And when I speak of Martial arts, I speak about it from a prospective of a guy who was trained by people from over-seas that were REAL martial artists (not American trained Gym rats..).. My Masters didn’t speak that whole “its for self-defense” non-sense… Running, is self-defense…
Most American martial artists are weak, and its because in America we coddle people, and give them rank promotions when they don’t deserve it… I refused to let one of my students get past the beginner level for two years, because I could tell he wasn’t fighting like he meant it… In a American dojo, your students would leave for that… Which is why I teach privately and on a one-on-one basis.. It works better that way…
All martial arts deserve respect.. But none stand supreme alone… And a REAL martial artist will typically not roll on the ground with an MMA guy, most of the time (not all of the time) they’ll cripple you before it gets that far…

Posted on September 27, 2012 at 3:53pmMMA is the best training out there. I’m talking about MMA for self-defense and not for sport. I train MMA for both, and even training for sport is a great idea. There is nothing wrong with it, but if you ONLY train to fight in the ring and do not learn any street techniques OR how to apply what you know to a real life situation then I would agree, not a good idea.

I agree with you 100 percent about American martial arts. I’ve known women who were horrible trained have a black belt. I studied Kung Fu from 8 to 16 and I was only a purple belt but I was proud of it. I have a female friend who obtained her black belt in about 2 years. LOL paid for.
The biggest thing about a street fight is if you don’t know it’s going to occur your opponent gets to basically attack you with out you being prepared. So the ******* that throws the first punch has a huge advantage especially because there’s no gloves. Teeth come out and Jaws get broken.

Posted on September 27, 2012 at 5:15pmThere are far too many “martial arts schools” in this country who are nothing but black belt factories. One used to do demonstrations in a mall in Pennsylvania and I was disgusted with what I saw. They had these 8 yr old black belts that couldn’t do a snap kick or front punch properly. Their technique was so horrible that even with their full strength, they wouldn’t have much force. They were losing over 1/2 of their potential force through poor technique AND THESE KIDS WERE AWARDED BLACK BELTS! Not only were these parents ripped off, the kids have this sense of being able to defend themselves even when they can’t.
I know a woman who has one of those paid for black belts and was raped anyway. She started taking Ninjitsu and says that it won’t happen again. She says that she learned how to defend herself better in a few months of Ninjitsu classes than in 4 years of the other martial art that she studied.
