Judge Orders Man Behind Anti-Islam Film ‘Innocence of Muslims’ Jailed

UPDATE (9:02 p.m. ET): A federal judge has ordered the man behind a crudely produced anti-Islamic video that inflamed parts of the Middle East to be detained because he is a flight risk.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The California man behind a crudely produced anti-Islamic video posted to YouTube that has inflamed parts of the Middle East was arrested for violating terms of his probation, authorities said Thursday.

Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, 55, was convicted in 2010 for federal check and sentenced to 21 months in prison. Under terms of his probation, he was not allowed to use computers or the Internet for five years without approval from his probation officer.

Nakoula was arrested after federal probation officials determined he violated the terms of his supervised release, said Thomas Mrozek U.S. Attorney’s spokesman in Los Angeles.

A U.S. District Court hearing was scheduled for Nakoula on Thursday afternoon. It was closed to media and the public.

Protests have erupted around the Middle East over a 14-minute trailer for “Innocence of Muslims,” which depicts Muhammad as a womanizer, religious fraud and child molester. Though the trailer was posted to YouTube in July, the violence didn’t break out until Sept. 11 and has spread since, killing dozens.

Nakoula, a Christian originally from Egypt, went into hiding after he was identified as the man behind the trailer.

The full story about Nakoula and the video still isn’t known.

The movie was made last year by a man who called himself Sam Bacile. After the violence erupted, a man who identified himself as Bacile called media outlets including The Associated Press, took credit for the film and said it was meant to portray the truth about Muhammad and Islam, which he called a cancer.

The next day, the AP determined there was no Bacile and linked the identity to Nakoula, a former gas station owner with a drug conviction and a history of using aliases. Federal authorities later confirmed there was no Bacile and that Nakoula was behind the movie.

Before going into hiding, Nakoula acknowledged to the AP he was involved with the film, but said he only worked on logistics and management.

A film permit listed Media for Christ, a Los Angeles-area charity run by other Egyptian Christians, as the production company. Most of the film was made at the charity’s headquarters. Steve Klein, an insurance agent in Hemet and outspoken Muslim critic, has said he was a consultant and promoter for the film.

The trailer still can be found on YouTube. The Obama administration asked Google, YouTube’s parent, to take down the video but the company has refused, saying it did not violate its content standards.

Meantime, a number of actors and workers on the film have come forward to say they were duped. They say they were hired for a film titled “Desert Warrior” and there was no mention of Islam or Muhammad in the script. Those references were dubbed in after filming was completed.

Actress Cindy Lee Garcia has sued to get the trailer taken down, saying she was duped.

  Will they arrest and JAIL Kathryn Bigelow for directing the movie about Osama Bin Laden after it comes out? Surely it will be offensive to muslims?

  Let’s just ignore the FACT that this guy ripped of people of over $700,000 in an INTERNET bank fraud scheme involving check kiting and other wire service means. He violated the terms of his probation, failed to comply with restitution orders. Terms of his probation included restrictions on his use of the internet (perfectly legal since that was his vehicle for running his fraudulent business).

  SimpleTruths is correct. If you READ THE ARTICLE, he wasn’t arrested for the film. He was arrested for a PAROLE VIOLATION. The system worked here. He is not a hero, he is a crook and deserves to be behind bars.

I believe Obama refuses to admit the attack on our embassy was a terrorist attack, and the reason he keeps harping about this film is so that in his second term (which will be stolen by him) he can claim he needs to control the internet, abolish our 1st amendment rights, and make sheep of us all. Yeah, I know..sounds very paranoid, but you just watch…

Our government is rife with lawlessness

Consider also a recent civil (non-criminal) federal court case involving a Democrat appointed judge. In this case, the federal judge and his friends threatened the litigant (the “victim”) with “death” and seized, without any notice or hearing, prohibited him from hiring a lawyer, and essentially into a bizarre civil lockdown. The litigant has been under this civil lockdown order for nearly two years, and is prohibited from having a lawyer, from owning any possessions, from freely traveling, from working, etc… The judge redistributed the litigants property to the judge’s friends.

THE COURT: “I’m telling you don’t screw with me. You are a fool, a fool, a fool, a fool to screw with a federal judge, and if you don’t understand that, I can make you understand it. I have the force of the Navy, Army, Marines and Navy behind me.”

THE COURT: “You realize that order is an order of the Court. So any failure to comply with that order is contempt, punishable by lots of dollars, punishable by possible jail, death”

This is Sharia and pandering to Muslims. If that man touched a computer knowing the terms of his probation, he’s just an idiot. On the other hand, almost any work or enterprise nowadays is related one way or the other with computers and Internet. He can perform many administrative tasks without using a computer (Not that is efficiency that way, but the man has to eat!), but the business as a whole need them as well need the connectivity. If he was working on logistics and management, this is just SHARIA IN YOUR COUNTRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. Next: Rest of the world!!!

Can you spell rail-road or scape-goat…..Where is the prrof that this guy actually uploaded the video? Where is the proof that this video had anything to do with anything and even if it did – so what?

You may as well arrest me now – I will not shut up and sit down.

I keep waiting for the knock on my door ( I actually live 2 miles from the local FBI head quarters) and in 2009 when DHS and Pelosi came out with the description of “right wing terrrorists” I turned myself in – they didn’t know what to do with me. I also wrote to the DHS, FBI & DOJ to again turn myself in – and included all the details about me including distiguishing marks….I was trying to save tax dollars by giving them everything they would need to find me.

I haven’t tried to fly,but I did get my carry permit – so maybe they decided I was harmless. Good on them – though if you are a real enemy to the US, you should fear me….

Egyptian television network AL-NAS broadcast inflammatory excerpts from the trailer on 9/9. While there likely were planned protests for 9/11, the outrage over the movie added fuel to the fire.

A foreign man with a foreign name, in and out of jail for fraud is the kind of thing that would otherwise have blazers foaming at the mouth. You think a guy that violates probation 8 times and is a convicted felon for fraud, an ATM cash thief, is impervious to US law as long as they piss of muslims? That’s not how our country deals with crime and punishment. Civil liberties taken away unconstitutionally? I’d like to hear this one.   In anycase I do agree, that the guy was a criminal. “If” he broke probation/ I.E. if he personally used the internet, while under probation, and blocked form it. I can see him getting in trouble. If he didn’t personally use the internet, but one of the other non-criminal film makers were involved with the upload, then he is innocent. He at least deserves a fair trial (or are the right to a fair trial another right being eroded in this country?)
  
  But time will tell if they also try to use this to go after other people who practice their free speech.

  I understand he is an American citizen who immigrated from Egypt… Look back to your own past, you probably had at least one ancestor who came over here on a boat or plane, to become an American citizen…

But someone who carries the name Nakoula Basseley Nakoula is not exactly one who has assimilated into American society through years of citizenship here. And also, do NOT judge someone you don’t know – my ancestry comes from Great Britian and American Indians (I am a descendent of Pocahontas). I am as American as you can get.

  Umm, you said part of your ancestry was british… That means your ancestors came over here on a boat just like many of my ancestors did. I can trace my ancestry to the Sons of Liberty, who fought in the Revolutionary war (or even further back), you can probably do so as well.
  
  My point is if you go back far enough, we can all trace our heritage to immigrants from foreign countries! Even the native americans originally came from foreign continents, if you trace the history far back enough…
  
  What is important though is that once we created our nation, immigration was done through legal means. There are laws against illegal immigration, that must be respected.
  
  But ultimately we (as in legal citizenry) are a melting pot of many nationalities all coming her or living her to be Americans. No hyphens…

How does the public know he violated his probation if it is closed to them and the media? He could have made the movie and the production company could have done the internet/computer part…

Our communist government is arresting this guy for exercising his First Amendment rights.
