Mars Once Had Knee-Deep Flowing Stream, Mars Rover ‘Curiosity’ Reveals

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The NASA rover Curiosity has beamed back pictures of bedrock that suggest a fast-moving stream, possibly waist-deep, once flowed on Mars – a find that the mission’s chief scientist called exciting.
There have been previous signs that water existed on the red planet long ago, but the images released Thursday showing pebbles rounded off, likely by water, offered the most convincing evidence so far of an ancient streambed.
There was “a vigorous flow on the surface of Mars,” said chief scientist John Grotzinger of the California Institute of Technology. “We’re really excited about this.”
The discovery did not come as a complete surprise. NASA decided to plunk Curiosity down inside Gale Crater near the Martian equator because photos from space hinted that the spot possessed a watery past. The six-wheeled rover safely landed Aug. 5 after a nail-biting plunge through the Martian atmosphere. It’s on a two-year, $2.5 billion mission to study whether the Martian environment could have been favorable for microbial life.

In this handout image provided by NASA/JPL-Caltech/MSSS, and captured by NASA's Curiosity rover, a rock outcrop called Link pops out from a Martian surface that is elsewhere blanketed by reddish-brown dust, showing evidence for an ancient, flowing stream, September 2, 2012. (Getty Images)

Present day Mars is a frozen desert with no hint of water on its radiation-scarred surface, but geological studies of rocks by previous missions suggest the planet was warmer and wetter once upon a time.
The latest evidence came from photos that Curiosity took revealing rounded pebbles and gravel – a sign that the rocks were transported long distances by water and smoothed out.
The size of the rocks – ranging from a sand grain to a golf ball – indicates that they could not have been carried by wind, said mission scientist Rebecca Williams of the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson, Ariz.
Though Curiosity did not use its high-tech instruments to drill into the rocks or analyze their chemical makeup, Grotzinger said scientists were sure that water played a role based on just studying the pictures.
It’s unclear how long the water persisted on the surface, but it easily could have lasted “thousands to millions of years,” said mission scientist Bill Dietrich of the University of California, Berkeley.
Curiosity chanced upon the dried-up streambed while driving to Glenelg, an intriguing spot where three types of terrain meet. Its ultimate destination is Mount Sharp, a mountain rising from the center of crater floor, but it was not expected to travel there until the end of the year.
Finding past water is a first step toward learning whether the environment could have supported microbes. Scientists generally agree that besides water and an energy source such as the sun, organic carbon is a necessary prerequisite for life.
While an ancient streambed holds promise as a potentially habitable environment, scientists don’t think it’s a good place to preserve the carbon building blocks of life. That’s why the rover will continue its trek to the foothills of Mount Sharp where there’s a better chance of finding organics.

Posted on September 28, 2012 at 3:25pmI’m a geologist and rounded rocks indicate erosion by water. Yes, wind can round the rocks but a rock that has been rounded by water has a different appearance than that rounded by wind. In addition, not that all of the rocks are rounded. If it were rounded by wind only some would be rounded.
Going by your logic, 1+1=2 is a theory. Did you know that 1+1 can equal 10?

Posted on September 30, 2012 at 3:36pmWhy does this matter?
If there was flowing water at some time in the past, why is that so important? The polar cap has ice. If there is ice, it is logical there is water also.
I understand they are searching for life, but water by itself does not necessarily mean life accompanies it. Any water that may have been on the surface is now subterranean.

Posted on September 28, 2012 at 1:23amAre you serious. Rounded rocks? Thats the evidence? Sounds a lot more like speculation at this stage if you ask me, find a real stream of water flowing. THAT would be convincing.
Also….
‘Though Curiosity did not use its high-tech instruments to drill into the rocks or analyze their chemical makeup, Grotzinger said scientists were sure that water played a role based on just studying the pictures.’
-that is absolutely horrible science, if your going to claim it is evidence for a stream at least do the proper research, studying a picture…really?
Look im all for finding evidence of water on Mars, i think that would be pretty cool….but….really…..do these people actually think this evidence is convincing?

Posted on September 28, 2012 at 2:09amRounded rocks are proof of water. Rocks while strong are very brittle, so the fractures that cause a break result in jagged sharp pointed edges. Drop a big rock on the ground observe how it breaks. The only way for rocks to be naturally rounded there would have to be a viscous fluid flowing over the whole surface, based on Mars atmosphere the air is in no way viscous enough to cause this state of erosion. Which leads to the conclusion the rock must have been submerged in a flowing fluid, aka water to result in such rounding. The only other explanation would be aliens or people already visited the planet and rounded the rocks and that seems less probable then a flowing creek. There’s more science to this then there appears on the surface.

Posted on September 28, 2012 at 8:44amAlex is right on. Only a flowing fluid can cause the rocks to take this shape. Not only this fact is obvious from the picture with the 1CM marked on it, look carefully at the side of the outcrop. This is very clearly a sedimentary rock formation. Mars dried up due to it’s small size and therefore low gravity allowing loss to space over eons of time. If earth were not as massive as it is it would be as dry and barren. On Mars as the atmosphere evaporated into space it carried water vapor with it. The greater mass of CO2 is why it is nearly all that is left of what once was an atmosphere very possibly capable of supporting life. This is kindergarten science I cannot believe the posts here trying to refute the conclusions of the Nasa scientists.

Posted on September 28, 2012 at 9:31amAxel and dr vel err should i simply say drivel.
Anyway Most fluids could do this, may never had had h2o in surplus (that is accurate stating otherwise is not).
Another thing geniuses there is a thing called wind erosion (sure its need larger than current atmosphere or/and just a super long time to erode both scientist believe it has had). So yeah wind can also cause rounded surfaces.
There is ice erosion also.
So while it may have been water there is just no proof , just like god creating the universe (other than it exists).
That is the current state of our knowledge.

Posted on September 28, 2012 at 11:38amAmarath01, Insulting name calling escalates your credentials only in your own mind. Rocks will not be rounded on all sides unless they tumble. For wind to do this only very high velocity could cause the motion for heavier rocks. Nor is it likely they would form sedimentary layers of fairly solid rock formation as is visible in the picture. Mars is in the orbit it is in. It was not further away from the sun in the past, required for other chemicals such as methane to be a liquid. Perhaps you should get a CRC and look it up? Minus 260 degrees F is it’s boiling point. Mars has never been this cold based upon it’s distance from the sun. Second grade chemistry could tell you many things. One is at the average temperature of Mars only water could be liquid during warmer peaks. Carbon Dioxide cannot possibly be liquid on Mars it can only freeze or sublime. The gravity is too weak to provide the tremendous pressure required to liquify CO2, a pressure of nearly a thousand pounds per square inch is needed at temperatures below the boiling point, the very reason dry ice turns directly to gas on earth. In fact in the entire solar system water is the only chemical found which can remain liquid at the low pressure of the atmosphere on Mars at temperatures above the sublimation point of dry Ice, for water above 32 degrees F. In short, you do not really know much at all do you.

What you have done is run headlong into a little thing called “digital artifact.” When you “enlarge” a picture what you’re really doing is using software to guesstimate, arithmetically-speaking, what the picture might look like if you had taken it at that resolution. While you may think you’re expanding a digital photo like you’d zoom in with a pair of binoculars, that simply isn’t the case–you CANNOT get more information from a digitized photo at a specific size/resolution than what it already contains.

Posted on September 27, 2012 at 11:01pmG.E.R,
The problem isn’t science, it’s ‘scientists’. Moreover, there is no more ‘science’ in a picture of some martian pebbles than there would be in a picture of some pebbles on earth. The statement “There was a vigorous flow on the surface of Mars,” is just an educated guess, and hardly ‘science’. An additional point would be that the Rover Spirit also produced pictures of polished rocks (water! water!)…, the problem? Those rocks were polished by wind/sand. Perhaps these *were* polished by water, but there is no ‘science’, so far, to support that conclusion. My head remains intact.
Here’s the rule of thumb: The closer the scientist is to government funding, the less likely it is that his/her findings are valid. My favorite lately was the HUGE roll-out by NASA of Wolfe-Simon’s arsenic-based algae ‘research’. If you look for that now on NASA’s site, it has been scrubbed. Why? Well because a private, skeptical researcher took one look at it and threw the BS flag. There have been plenty of others…, everything from Alar to acid rain…, all BS by overheated, grant-sucking ‘scientists’.
The ugliest joke of all has been the current President, who promised to ‘restore science to its proper role’. Those words from a guy who no more grasp of science then one of the three stooges. His ideology-driven advisers have caused him to invest in innumerable losing schemes. All because he himself is an inexperienced clueless dunce. Got it?
