Catholic Bishop: Voting for Obama, Dems Could Place ‘Eternal Salvation of Your Own Soul in Serious Jeopardy’
Bishop Thomas John Paprocki from Springfield, Illinois, is getting attention after making some strongly-worded comments about those Americans who opt to vote for President Barack Obama in November. In a column and video that was posted by Catholic Times, the official newspaper of the Diocese of Springfield, Paprocki targeted portions of the Democratic platform that “explicitly endorse intrinsic evils.” He also warned that supporting certain politicians could place peoples’ “eternal salvation…in jeopardy.”
While he noted that it’s not his job to to tell people who do vote for, the faith leader said that he has a duty to speak out about moral issues. Despite his stated problems with the Democratic Party platform — the initial removal of God, its stance abortion and its support of gay marriage – Paprocki spoke relatively favorably of the Republican platform.

“I have read the Republican Party platform and there is nothing in it that supports or promotes an intrinsic evil or a serious sin,” he proclaimed.
While the bishop didn’t overtly name President Barack Obama as a poor candidate for people of faith to support, he invoked religious themes and warned of spiritual damnation if religious voters stand in support of politicians who “promote actions of behaviors that are intrinsically evil.”
“I am not telling you which party or which candidates to vote for or against. What I am saying is that you need to think and pray very carefully about your vote,” Paprocki said. “Because a vote for a candidate who promotes actions or behaviors that are intrinsically evil and gravely sinful makes you morally complicit and places the eternal salvation of your own soul in serious jeopardy.”
Here’s a portion of the video that was cut and posted by Right Wing Watch:
Here’s a longer version of this address, as published by the Catholic Times:
As noted, the Bishop is careful to continuously say that he’s not attempting to influence votes. However, the overall logic, which can be seen in the text version of his comments, follows a telling pattern. In the sixth paragraph, he notes that the Democratic platform endorses “intrinsic evils”; in the next paragraph he claims that the GOP platform does not endorse these same purported evils.
Then, he says that, while he’s not telling people which party or candidate to vote for, that “a vote for a candidate who promotes actions or behaviors that are intrinsically evil” could carry dire consequences. Since the only party mentioned as embracing evil in this manner is the Democrats, the thesis is self-evident.

Posted on September 28, 2012 at 1:46pmThe Vatican invented Islam, to kill Christians and non-Catholics “The Vatican wanted to create a messiah for the Arabs, someone they could raise up as a great leader, a man with charisma whom they could train, and eventually unite all the non-Catholic Arabs behind him, creating a mighty army that would ultimately capture Jerusalem for the pope. In the Vatican briefing, Cardinal Bea told us this story:
‘A wealthy Arabian lady who was a faithful follower of the pope played a tremendous part in this drama. She was a widow named Khadijah. She gave her wealth to the church and retired to a convent, but was given an assignment. She was to find a brilliant young man who could be used by the Vatican to create a new religion and become the messiah for the children of Ishmael. Khadijah had a cousin named Waraquah,, who was also a very faithful Roman Catholic and the Vatican placed him in a critical role as Muhammad’s advisor. He had tremendous influence on Muhammad. While Muhammad was being prepared, he was told that his enemies were the Jews and that the only true Christians were Roman Catholic. He was taught that others calling themselves Christians were actually wicked impostors and should be destroyed. Many Muslims believe this. http://www.redicecreations.com/specialreports/2006/04apr/catholicislam.html

You cannot be be a Catholic of good conscience and vote for Obama, there is no grey area on this issue. I have voted democratic in the past, but the party has moved too far away from common ground with my beliefs, and i’m a lapsed catholic. Petrus Romanus, qui paſcet oues in multis tribulationibus: quibus tranſactis ciuitas ſepticollis diruetur, & Iudex tremẽdus iudicabit populum ſuum. Finis.
“In the extreme persecution of the Holy Roman Church, there will sit Peter the Roman, who will nourish the sheep in many tribulations; when they are finished, the city of seven hills will be destroyed, and the dreadful judge will judge his people. The end.”
Quite interesting given the world’s current sociological and political overtones.

Posted on September 28, 2012 at 4:49pmNO offense, but its not a costume, I take offense to your intended funny-ha-ha. Like the other bloggers have said, this is a big thing in the Catholic Church to have a bishop stand up and tell people there are consequences for their in-actions, or in this case their actions. The Catholic bishops have been, for the most part, on the sidelines and afraid to call the policies of the federal government what they are, a bunch of mindless garbage. You would think twice about your comments if a government policy were impinging on your rights. I’m sure the government is but maybe you just don’t know it. Religion is an important part of society for some people and to be told that their souls are in jeopardy because of a innocent vote for president IS a big deal.

Posted on September 28, 2012 at 7:19pmIt’s unfortunate that you do not recognize a man courageously performing his duties when you see it. This “little man” is a Catholic bishop who has a solemn obligation to speak out on matters of faith and morals, even in the face of scoffing and personal attacks such as yours. He is responsible for the proper faith instruction of everyone in his diocese. Given that Catholics comprise more than 25% of the U. S. population, Catholic bishops have a very important and, possibly decisive, role to play in the moral progress of our country, just as they have since the first explorers set foot upon this continent. As a matter of fact, as we saw confirmed during the Democrat Party convention, President Obama and the Democrat Party fully support and promote the intrinsically evil policies of unrestricted abortion and the entire homosexual agenda, including redefinition of marriage/destruction of the fundamental family unit. They also support Government intrusion into every area of the lives of every individual citizen, which is directly opposed to the very Catholic principle of Subsidiarity that happens to also be incorporated into our U. S. Constitution, particularly under the 10th Amendment. No Catholic, or any other citizen, in good conscience, can vote for Obama or for any Democrat, for that matter, and the good bishop is quite correct to point out the moral dangers for his flock and for our country. We all need to Pray and Vote For Life and Freedom in every election in 2012.

Posted on September 28, 2012 at 11:21pm@London410 – Protestants believe that no matter what they do they cannot lose their salvation, once they say the sinners prayer no amount of sin can separate them from God. They believe that being born again doesn’t mean that a person actually changes and repents and turns from their life of sin. To Protestants being “born again” means believing that Jesus is God and died for our sins. Protestants believe that human beings are degenerate and not capable (even with Gods grace) of obeying Gods Commands so being born again doesn’t mean a person actually changes it just means that Jesus righteousness hides their sins. Protestants believe that Christians are snow covered dung hills. That being said, Protestants can vote for a candidate that openly supports things like late term abortion and homosexual marriage. Protestants believe that thier is no connection between how they live their lives and their salvation. They believe that anything they do to try and live a moral life is actually denying the once for all sacrifice of Jesus on the cross and is therefore is “works righteosness” Martin Luther also belived this and encouraged “Christians” to “Sin and Sin Boldly” just to show Satan that no amount of sin can separate them from God. Hope this helps, Peace in Christ.

Posted on September 29, 2012 at 12:31pm@teresaj – you said “I am Protestant (non-denominational), and I don’t believe a thing of what you just said, except that Jesus died for our sins” Yes I know, you already stated that you think things like what day you worship on and the mode of Baptism are “fluff” It seems you belong to the emergent church movement which identifies itself based on the things it doesn’t believe in vice what it stands for. The problem is, there are real life issues that Christians have to address (abortion, contraception, homosexual marriage, divorce and remarriage). How can one repent of sins unless those sins are explicitly identified as sins? How do we know that we are worshipping God in the way that God wants us to worship Him? It’s easy to say I believe in Jesus and leave it at that but Jesus is a person and Jesus taught us things and told us what is necessary to have eternal life. There are things that Jesus expects of us. That which is most easily understood is believed to be true. So if we narrow down all of the Bible and all of Jesus teachings and all of the Apostles writings to just one thing (believe in Jesus) it fits in a nice little box with a bow on top but it doesn’t get Christians any closer to actually FOLLOWING Jesus. The 2 questions I would ask you are 1. What DO you believe and 2. What are you Protesting? I have met many “non-denominational” Christians who don’t share their Pastors views on Justification and Salvation which seems odd to me. Pax Ch

Posted on September 29, 2012 at 3:30pmSIMPLY PUT: The Catholic Church was the best decision I have made in my life. I am so grateful for it and that key members of my family are or have come to it too. 28% of the voters in the USA are Catholic. This is a larger number than Blacks (many of whom are not voting for Obama this time around). Obama, being a Muslim Counterfeiter, knows -0- of GOD; of GOD’S plans for us (His Children) or how satan has tried to kill all of God’s creations. Again I’d like to point out that of the Billions of people who have inhabited the earth, only 5% of us have been born, lived in FREEDOM. GOD has each of us here, right now – in this period of time – for a reason.
Mock if you want to, it has -0- effect on us except to prove once again how far off course Obama and all of those who support him have gone and tried to drag our country.

The bishop’s comments have nothing to do with the Romney campaign, fool. They are his own, from convictions based in his faith — apparently something you would know NOTHING about.
His comments ARE accurate; the Democrat platform IS absolutely in direct conflict with biblical truth, while the Republican platform is not.
THAT’s the simple truth. If you can’t recognize that, you’re an idiot.

I am not Catholic, but glad to hear someone from the Catholic church finally speaking out in how the members of the Catholic faith should view ANY candidate running for public office.
In regards to the polls showing the President in the “Lead”, that is good, I have been encouraging everyone to tell pollsters that they are voting “Democratic”. This serves multiple purposes.
1) keeps POTUS from planning anything stupid if he believes he has it in the bag
2) gets the media all excited and slobbering all over themselves thinking they are right
3) in the end, let’s those running for office that they too can be mislead, so watch out, the time to fear the people has returned.
I just “Hope” that many Catholics hear Bishop Paprocki’s message and realize he is correct and “Change” the way they vote in November so this country can once again move “Foward” by returning to our Values, Rights, Freedoms and following the US Constitution.

Posted on September 30, 2012 at 5:13amYes, nothing could be more effective for a desperate Romney campaign than to have a Catholic bishop try to scare people into voting for Mitt. His excellency is merely saying what should have been said frequently and long ago — if you vote for those who would slaughter innocents in the name of “women’s health” and support marriage between members of the same sex (both of which are grave transgressions to the church’s teachings) — you will face the consequences. The teachings of the Catholic church are not like a smorgasbord — you can’t pick and choose to follow some and not others. As for atheists like you, you needn’t make fun of a religion and, by doing so, its billion-plus adherents — it’s unbecoming and shows lack of breeding.

Posted on September 28, 2012 at 2:56pmChuck, where do you get the sum of millions? I think you might be thinking of the atheists of the 20th century and the tens of millions butchered by Mao, Pol Pot, and Stalin. Of the 49,000 trial records of the Spanish Inquisition only 776 executions took place (between 1540 and 1700). Professor Agostino Borromeo, a historian of Catholicism at the Sapienza University in Rome, writes that about 125,000 people were tried by church tribunals as suspected heretics in Spain. Of these, about 1,200 – 2,000 were actually executed. Millions of people killed during the time periods of the inquisition or even the crusades would likely have made the world a very empty place, so we must assume your quip about “millions” is a trollish exaggeration or a mistake in a lack of historical context.

Seriously? I’ve read many posts by you and to hear anything that resembles moral directives come out of your mouth (technically fingers in this case) is laughable at best. If you had a grain of common sense and a moral compass that didn’t point the complete opposite direction on pretty much everything it would be easy for you to understand that apathy, in the case of Mr. Obama, is no different than acceptance. Indifference might as well be acceptance, especially given his history and his party alignment. Wake up and smell the coffee, it’s socialist-liberal-democrat blend and it’s morally objectionable garbage.

Posted on September 28, 2012 at 4:34pmAgreed. The truth is that a vast majority of those who claim to be of a particular Christian religion do not adhere to the system of beliefs. I’d like to see Christianity as a whole become more unified and firm on a number of issues but addressing the attitude of holding beliefs that directly contradict the faith one professes is a huge pet peeve of mine.
The fact is, religion is not something that a person is, it’s something that they believe and try to put into practice. The common misconception is that by believing in a certain religion, it makes a person a Baptist/Protestant/Lutheran/Catholic/Atheist etc. As human beings, we are incapable of being anything other than human. Most people who claim to “be” Catholic/Christian are no where close to “being” let alone even practicing Catholicism/Christianity as their particular prescribed discipline indicates.
This is a step in the right direction, but I think more is required.

Posted on September 29, 2012 at 10:44pmI am not Catholic, but glad to hear someone from the Catholic church finally speaking out in how the members of the Catholic faith should view ANY candidate running for public office.
I just “Hope” that many Catholics hear Bishop Paprocki’s message and realize he is correct and “Change” the way they vote in November so this country can once again move “Foward” by returning to our Values, Rights, Freedoms and following the US Constitution.

it’s a good thing that nothing is eternal and soul’s don’t exist. whew, i was worried there for a minute.
this sort of hyperbole illustrates the absurdity of faith leaders. do they really think that the path to salvation goes through the voting booth? it’s akin to saying that Catholics who eat meat on Fridays during lent are hell bound. people vote for a candidate for a variety of reasons. no one should be told that their vote will condemn them to hellfire should they make a certain choice. it’s a sad commentary on the state of religion in America.

Regardless if you want to hear it or not the Catholic Church is attempting to support and preserve the Judeo-Christian ethic and its loyal followers who remain under attack in every corner of the world.
I feel bad for you that you lack faith in your life. Of course in this country you have the freedom to believe in whatever you choose. I respect that. It’s just pretty sad.

Posted on September 29, 2012 at 6:36pmPhilly, if you had a friend who was alcholic would you encourage him to drink? If you did encourage him or not stop him and he/she became intoxicated, drove and killed himself/herself and/or someone else would you feel guilty. Maybe if you had been a better friend you could have prevented this tragedy from happening. Same with the Bishop; he is trying to protect his fellow Catholics, many of whom may not know what the Dems stand for. He is educating them on the Democratice/ Obama policies so that they can vote their conscience. So that if, Obama gets into the White House again, Please God Forbid, these people will not have the sins of what is to transcribe on their consciene because it was their vote that gave the administration the power to mandate and take tax dollars from those who consiencouly object to abortion, denial of services ( euthanasia under Obamacare) ,etc. The Bishop is living his religious convictions and teaching the work of Christ. Athieists have consciouses as well. katiedid

Posted on September 29, 2012 at 7:37pmBravo Philly! This sort of BS from the bishop is the worst kind, trying to scare people into voting for who the church wants. This is another reason that churches of ALL denominations need to be taxed at the highest possible rate. If they want to remain as tax free leeches they need to stay out of politics.
By the way, do churches count in Romney’s 47%? They should.

I used to avoid making statements like “Obama is Evil” but it is increasingly obvious that he is the epitome of evil.
Hitler didn’t think he was doing anything evil when he took peoples guns way, just like Obama believes that he is doing good deeds when he steals your rights. Obama has begun assasinating American citizens without even giving them a trial. Obama is evil. Obama makes fun of christianity while pretending to be one and defends islam while pretending to not be one. Obama is evil.

Posted on September 28, 2012 at 12:48pmThe Bishop is completely right. To vote for Obama and Dem’s means you would be going directly against Catholic teachings against abortion and infant murder. The Dem’s and Obama are in direct violation of separation of Church and State and they are directly interfering with Catholic teachings by demanding that birth control and abortions be funded by Catholics. Now many will counter – oh well, there are Catholics who pick and choose what they will and won’t observe, and yes, one cannot deny that. However for those who do properly adhere to Catholic teachings but are still forced to permit things against Catholic faith and are forced to pay taxes to contribute to things which go against Catholic faith, the Dem’s and Obama are the last, worst people that Catholics should want to see in government, especially given their embracing Communists which are hell bent on the murder and elimination of the Catholic faith, along with muslims who will not tolerate ANY faith but their own.

Love the Lord with all your heart, mind, and soul
Love your neighbor as yourself
Go out into all the world and preach the gospel
Thats it! Now IF you love your neighbor as yourself, would you steal from them or kill them?
For the Kingdom of heaven rests on these commandments.
