Fox News Airs Car Chase Suspect Shooting Himself in the Head on Live TV (Edited Video)

Fox News on Friday aired an Arizona car chase suspect shooting himself in the head on live television.

The suspect had emerged from his car, ran down a dirt road and then put a gun to his head and fired. The network quickly cut away once the man crumpled to the ground, with anchor Shepard Smith shouting, “Get off it! Get off it!”

After returning from a commercial break, Smith apologized to the viewers, saying the network had gone into a five-second delay but failed to cut away in time.

“We really messed up and we’re all very sorry. That didn’t belong on TV, we took every precaution we knew how to take to keep that from being on TV, and I personally apologize to you that that happened
,” he said. “That was wrong and that won’t happen again on my watch and I’m sorry.”

Prior to the shooting, Smith had been expressing his unease over how the situation might end.

“Well you know you wait for the end of these things and then you worry about how they may end. There’s no one else around him,” he said. “This makes me a little nervous, I gotta tell you.”

According to KSAZ-TV, the man was wanted for a suspected carjacking and had earlier fired shots at officers as they pursued him. His name and condition were not immediately released.

Al Tompkins, senior faculty for broadcasting and online at the Poynter Institute for journalism, told TheBlaze in an email there was “no excuse” for Fox to air what it did.

“These delay systems ultimately depend on humans to make them work,” Tompkins wrote. “There simply is no excuse for this kind of thing to happen over and over and over as it has for a decade and a half on TV stations across the country.”

He noted that California news stations, particularly in Los Angeles, “have the worst record but they are not alone.”

Smith’s full apology:

“Well, some explaining to do. While we were taking that car chase and showing it you to live, when the guy pulled over and got out of the vehicle we went on delay so that’s why I didn’t talk for about 10 seconds. We created a five-second delay as if you were to bleep back your DVR five seconds, that’s what we did with the picture we were showing you. So that we would see in the studio what was happening five seconds before you did so that if anything went horribly wrong we’d be able to cut away from it without subjecting you to it. And we really messed up and we’re all very sorry. That didn’t belong on TV, we took every precaution we knew how to take to keep that from being on TV, and I personally apologize to you that that happened
. Sometimes we see a lot of things that we don’t let get to you because it’s not time-appropriate, it’s insensitive, it’s just wrong. And that was wrong and that won’t happen again on my watch and I’m sorry.”

–

UPDATE: Fox News Executive Vice President for News Michael Clemente called it a “severe human error” in a statement released Friday night:

“We took every precaution to avoid any such live incident by putting the helicopter pictures on a five second delay. Unfortunately, this mistake was the result of a severe human error and we apologize for what viewers ultimately saw on the screen.”

good job Shep! No really a good job. If our news people and the media in general would show more of the results of these actions as they happen then maybe less of them would happen. Quit coddling the american people and show the outcome. We ARE strong and can take it. The people that take it…….. well there is the off switch. Its news so show it notjust talk about it, I’ve heard enough talking.

Shepard Smith was a bit too slow calling “get off it”.
The guy had already pulled the trigger and was on the ground by the time he yelled.

I was watching on the live video feed on the fox news internet site (not on cable t.v.), so it was totally uncut. While it was a bit stunning to see the guy put a gun to his head and pull the trigger, I didn’t think it was any more “shocking” than what’s aired on the news just about every night. In no way was the video “gruesome” or “sensationalized” in any way, so I fail to see the need for an apology of any kind.

I hate how the media thinks they have to shelter us from the truth and reality. If there is an unpredictable event airing on live TV, you have to make the choice of whether the risk is worth allowing minors to see. Leave it playing for the rest of us.

I saw the live feed from the helicopter on Fox. Fox showed it all the way up to where he landed face down on the ground.

What happened to the 7 second delay like they have on the radio?

      @LEADNOTFOLLOW
It may have taken a couple of seconds for the brain to process what happened and the mouth to speak the words. As it stands it’s not entirely his fault they used the network delay system (I believe the standard is 5 seconds) in an attempt to prevent this from airing live. Obviously something or someone screwed up and it aired. I don’t think Shep had a magic button to press to stop it’s airing, likewise the only reason it stopped airing had little to do with Shep’s “Get It off” comments and the timing of them.

The fact he had no control over it’s being aired is clearly evidenced in the fact that he was continually requesting it be taken off (rather than just doing it himself). There was someone sitting elsewhere who had control of that and either didn’t realize what had happened or was in shock over seeing it themselves. Of course this day in age there is also the aid of computer programs to help with video processing (i.e. youtube uses it every time a video is uploaded).

Now I saw you commented elsewhere that perhaps a 10 second delay might be used. Which given that children my be in the room watching wouldn’t be a bad idea depending on their age.

I was watching it live with my two young children unfortunately. It seemed as if Shepard was actually watching the delayed feed because his remarks came several seconds after the man shot himself. Not sure exactly how it works but it seemed like the feed we were watching was the actual live feed and the feed he was watching in the studio was the one we were suppose to be watching. I don’t think it is coddling. It is repugnant. Several years ago he, Shepard Smith ran an entire chase for nearly the complete hour at 6 o’clock. That was a question mark of who was in charge of the news. And further car chases over the years as this one. I am totally amazed at his fascination and deciding the public in Texas has to see a chase in Calif. Maybe it’s his guy thing but I began to “get over” Shepard a long time back. He uses the radical rules when he made fun of the girl singer over and over and over, then Blagovich was his personal punching bag. The time he questioned the nurse who refused to take a flue shot she was dispensing to others he tried his level best to make her out a fool. Doesn’t take away from Fox News but Shepard is not a nice guy, just another hack lawyer. in my opinion of course. What goes around comes around. Watching a suicide on tv is not pleasurable. On his watch, indeed. It was his watch, wasn’t it?.

Shep is not the one to accuse or make the focal point. He showed his ability to see things unfold and by the time the “incident” actually happened he was the first to catch it. There is not really much more to say. We are living in a horrible time and suicide is unfortunately becoming an option to those who feel they want a permanent solution to a temporary problem.

However this guy carjacked someone, shot at police and could have killed someone on the road.
Although it is sad that he chose this path it is not sad that he is no longer a threat to anyone else. If he was willing to shoot at police and shoot himself odds are he would have no problem killing someone else.

As liberal as he is he was hinting to something. What is he talking about not airing news if it is not time appropriate ? I think he was getting at something about the media. Call me crazy!!!

No need to apologize Mr. Smith. The network revealed the truth. Believe me, THIS society can handle it. No reprimand needed for anyone at FOX. If the network feels the need to air car chases in their entirety, they might as well air the entire chase, including the very ending.

I viewed it live on Fox and quite frankly the camera shot was from a distance and all you saw was the guy putting the gun to his head, and he falling to the ground. No blood, no brain matter, just someone ending their life. I just wonder if he killed someone in the car or was there another crime scene. You see more blood and guts in the movies made today.
    Shep is too darn dramatic.

Saw it too. Having responded to several head shots, mostly suicides, this guy must have been too cheap to buy a quality manufactured box of rounds.
Geez, did metro sexual Shep Smith have a cow! Think back to the 1984 father who was waiting inside the airport for his son’s homosexual kidnapper to return. He pulled out a .357 and shot the guy, live on the air.

Either it was a small caliber weapon, or it was staged for the cameras. Interestingly enough, even if it was a small caliber weapon you’d think there’s be some indication of a discharge. I saw NO smoke, and that helicopter was pretty close and clear on the camera work.

TSUNAMI_22, I remember seeing that live, but probably with a minor time delay in Germany right after they had set up the SatNet that allowed us to get up to date news from the states. I had just gotten off duty and was in my room changing clothes at the time. Just can’t forget that.
Yeah, he got off in court even though he plead No Contest. The jury just would not convict him.

Seriously people, stop with the bleeding heart crap. It’s not like he accidentally ran a stoplight. I live in AZ and if it had been earlier or later in the day he would have endangered many more people on the road.
This piece of crap carjacks a vehicle, shoots at police, and drives for over 45 minutes at super high speeds on the interstate endangering motorists. And there are reports that the owner of the carjacked car was in there with him. F-him. Saved the taxpayers the money of a trial and incarceration.

Would BSLSD apologize or make some kind of fun of it? It must have been pretty visually disturbing, because it looked like it shook Shep up some. We don’t always have to see the gruesome details
A friend of mine sent me an email about a sniper and his .50 cal rifle and the effect of a terrorist bomber who got shot with it. I could have done without seeing a man’s head split in half and his brains all over the ground..
