Cassidy Goodson Charged With First Degree Murder for Killing Newborn Son

A 14-year-old girl in Polk County, Fla. was arrested Thursday for allegedly choking her newborn son to death and storing the body in a shoebox after she secretly gave birth in a bathroom at her home earlier this month, WJXT reports.

Just days after being treated for what was reported to be a miscarriage on Sept. 19, Polk County sheriff’s deputies got a call indicating that the body of a full-term baby had been found stuffed in a shoebox at the teenaged girl’s residence.

Deputies say Cassidy Goodson, 14, went into the bathroom, covered her mouth with a towel and ran water to hide the fact that she was in labor. Goodson admitted that she used a pair of scissors to “pry the baby out” and the 9.5 pound, 20.4 inch baby was delivered alive into the toilet, according to WJXT.

The teenager said she then picked up the infant out of the toilet and checked for a pulse. After she found one, she allegedly put her hands around the baby’s throat and squeezed until his tiny body was still and lifeless, the Sheriff’s office said.

Goodson’s mother reportedly found the newborn’s body after she smelled a foul odor while picking up dirty laundry in her daughter’s room.

WJXT has more details on this tragic story:

Deputies said the girl then cleaned the bathroom, bathing herself and the dead infant before placing the child’s body in a shoebox, along with soiled towels and clothing.

Detectives learned Goodson, who weighs 100 pounds and is about 5 feet 3 inches tall, had been attempting to conceal her pregnancy from her family by wearing baggy clothing for the past several months.

An autopsy determined the newborn was a full-term infant and that he was alive and breathing prior to death. The cause of death was a result of asphyxia from strangulation and blunt force trauma.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, Goodson told detectives that she choked the baby to “stop him from breathing.”

Goodson is facing charges of premeditated first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse. Police said the investigation is still ongoing.

The Ledger reports that Circuit Judge Mark Carpanini ordered the girl to remain in secure detention during a brief hearing on Friday. Goodson will be represented by a public defender. Meanwhile, prosecutors are determining whether to charge the teen as an adult.

This is even too much for me. Normally I would have some insensitive thing to say, something crass, mean…but i have nothing.

I think this whole story should be removed from the site. We gain nothing from it! It’s a bit gratuitous.
Protect your children Pull them out of public schools (they are a form of child abuse) and teach them yourselves, instill in them good values, and teach them to be self reliable. If you hold your hand out you get what you are given, and you always have to ask and say thank you…To hell with that! I earn what i get and I get what I want, and I thank myself…Thank you Me.

  I don’t think this is a “gratuitous” story. Considering our society’s casual attitude toward abortion, including late term abortion, this girl probably believed she had a right to kill the child simply because she didn’t want it. The story illustrates how much we have devalued human life and how desperately we need to rethink our attitudes and laws regarding murder through abortion.

  This girl is just 2 years off of being 12 years old..It’s hard enough for a grown unmarried woman to have a child..much less one who is married to the wrong husband..but a child” Come on people..Everyone’s circucmstance is different.. The child died..that is a tradgedy..but the child still lives and who knows..maybe will be growing up in heaven..Children who have not reached the age of accountability will be in the presence of God..this little girl still has her whole life to live..and I think given her 14 yr old status..should not be judged..when she reaches the age of maturity..she will be lucky if she can forgive herself..the only hope she has is to latch on to Jesus/Yeshuah and to ask forgiveness of her sins..to follow Him through study of His word and guidance of the Holy Spirit..will she know that she is forgiven..We are all adults here..we don’t need to make this child’s life any harder than it already is..Prayers are in order from the faithful..

What I want to know is why she was so afraid of her parents that she couldn’t tell them she was pregnant?
  
  Having experience with a full term baby moving around inside me. The baby is already a part of your life. A mother gets attached to the baby before it is born. I felt when my son had hiccups, was restless, or just chilling out. The only thing is I couldn’t see or meet him yet. This mother killed a person (her son) she already had gotten to know. So she cannot claim it was a lump of tissue to be disposed of. After knowing and feeling her son for months (specially at night), the question I have is how could she choose to kill him rather than giving him away for adoption? She did have a choice!

  Why should she be charged with anything? In Illinois, our beloved leader fought for the right for the right to kill an infant that survived an abortion attempt.   I can pretty much guarantee she will get a slap on the wrist. She won’t spend more than 6 months in jail max. Women kill their just born babies often (infanticide) and the law does nothing about it. She looks so young and innocent too. After I read how she killed the baby, I was shocked. To think if she would have just given that little baby up for adoption all would have been solved.   The parents are not at fault, it is the Girl and the Girl alone who killed this child. Can we blame the parents for her complete lack of morals, yes, but only so far as how much time they spent with her outside of school. But you can not blame the parents for the death of the child, you can only blame her. Individual responsibility. You can’t blame the CEO of a company who has 1 out of 1000 employees who kills another employee, you can only blame that one employ for killing.   It looks like this girl banged her baby’s head/body against a hard surface, and then choked him to death. Once she was sure the baby was dead, she CLEANED him, used a shoebox as a casket, placed the BLOODIED towels on top of him, and “buried” him in her room for days.
  
  Those of you who think this girl was misguided are out of your freaking minds. Why is it so hard for society to recognize and punish psychopathic females? Females usually get away with murder because they find the perfect victims in their trusting, helpless children. Oh, the poor mentally disturbed mother! She had a severe hormonal imbalance and she snapped. Yes, there ARE cases of legally insane mothers who murder their children, but those are the exception. Most of the time it is a premeditated act and these female killers feel no remorse, although they typically shed crocodile tears in the courtroom. But in my mind the story reveals serious questions about where our society is at. No, society cannot be judged by the actions of one individual, but it can surely be scrutinized by level of “sickness” we see blossoming in our country.   @Monk….my son was 19 inches long and 6 pounds 5 ounces….long and skinny. My other son was 6 pounds 4 ounces but only 17 inches long. For being 9 pounds, 20.5 inches is not that bad. What surprises me is that she COULD deliver a baby that big weighing only 100 pounds.

  It might be but considering the weight was 9.5 lbs, it’s about normal. One of my children was overdue and weighed 8 lbs and was 21 inches. I thought he was big, but my sister had a full term 13 lb baby who was 25 inches long a few years later, for the weight they said he was about the right length.

  There is hope. Maybe the young girl will become a believer in Jesus Christ and accept His forgiveness.
  If she does, the baby from what the Bible indicates will be in heaven and in forgiveness they could be reunited. Granted this is not the best situation. Far better would have been to allow some deserving kind couple to adopt the baby. This is truly sad when life has no value to this girl.

  @Monk – my little girl was 8lbs 6oz and 21″ long at almost two weeks early. I, on the other hand, was 5lb 13oz and 18″, full term. So for a 9.5lb baby I don’t think that height is off at all. It can vary wildly.

Poor baby. I know so many people that would love a baby and want a baby that can’t have them. Why these girls (after carrying the baby for so long) would do this is beyond me. Look at the Casey Anthony trial though, this girl will get off. If she doesn’t I’ll be stunned. (If you do the deed, then carry the child and if you don’t want the child, put him/her up for adoption.)

  Not having to purchase maxi pads for this young kid should have tipped Momma off. So many couples wishing to adopt and waiting to have a family and this kid goes selfishly commits this act. These children have dead eyes. I saw Nancy Grace the other night and a 13 yr. old and his friend killed his grandmother for pizza money. Their eyes match this girls’ and the empty expression. To callously kill a living newborn is unimaginable but at that age, I can’t help but think our Loooooong suffering God would have someone tell her about His Mercy and forgiveness. When the crazy man shot Gabby Giffords, the Libs immediately looked to blame conservatives. Tried to use it as leverage for gun control.

If that line of thinking is correct, then Obama – she shouldn’t be burdened with a baby, and the liberal establishment should be the ones charged with murder and child abuse. And we should use it to lobby for laws that restrict law makers from making irresponsible statements like that!

In God’s eyes, do you think this 14 yo girl will be held fully accountable for this? We don’t know, but my heart says No. When society teaches her sex is for fun, babies aren’t living (even partial birth abortion is ok!) and no one is responsible for their own actions…God will punish that society – hold her role models accountable. Who is standing up for truth in this girl’s life?
How could she be full term pregnant and her parents not know?

So sad on so many levels. God bless that lost soul and may God grant her forgiveness and a new opportunity to put her life in order.

  Something is wrong with this picture. How does a five foot tall girl hide a full-term 9.5 lb pregnancy? That’s a big baby for any woman and really big for a small one.   The story also says she was treated at a hospital for miscarriage afterward, so obviously she wasn’t trying as hard to keep Mom and Dad from finding out about the pregnancy as we’d believe. What she did was horrid, but in the day of abortion on demand, how does a child make distinctions the medical community keeps blurring. Wrong is wrong, and I have a friend who works at a Crisis Pregnancy clinic, where they don’t pressure the women and girls, but do provide them with information and pray for them and ask if they’d like counseling about adoption, etc. She says the most prevalent and painful counseling they give is to women and girls who’ve had abortions, then had to live with the guilt. It’s then they’re most open to Christ’s forgiveness, and their future families, are blessed because they’ve received it. These are some of the best counselors of those considering abortion. May God help this girl to find forgiveness, and forgive herself for the evil she’s done.

  I never said she was beyond redemption. I only said that she has a serious problem as do many others. She has already been forgiven if she is but willing to ask for it. I don’t know if you noticed but I prayed the same prayer for her that Jesus prayed for His persecutors. Because they really don’t know what they’ve done. Neither has she. Someday she might. And in that moment, I can guarantee that she’ll cry out from the bottom of her heart for Jesus.

  Many parents are busy and into themselves, and have little time for their kids. She wore baggy clothes and parents weren’t paying attention. Which is obvious on how a 14 year old gets pregnant. She didn’t value her own child’s life, she learned that from somewhere other than public school.

  Obama is fine with partial birth abortion, only slightly less murder than what this girl did. This is the world that the atheists & those against God in any fashon. When you take away God, you remove our moral compass. This girl is clearly running without a moral compass.

This story is heartbreaking on so many different levels. 14 year old pregnant? Kill a baby? Parents don’t know she is pregnant????? At 100 lbs you wouldn’t think it would be that easy… 14 years old are no way mature enough to make adult decisions. Sigh….

  There is something very fishy with this story. My wife was 110 pounds when she became pregnant with my first son. I can’t believe that there would be any way to conceal that big bulge with baggy clothes from any parent, guardian, teacher, etc. who is paying attention.
  
  Plus, I have witnessed childbirth twice. My wifes head about spun around as she was screaming in pain during the biggest contractions. And that was with an epidural. A little running water would not cover that sound. The parents are just as guilty if they never reported the pregnancy and did not seek any medical support.

They may know it was wrong, but they don’t fully understand what the lasting outcome will be. This breaks my heart because I have teenagers and know they still make bad decisions. When I was 14 my mind was on playing video games.

  When I was 14 I was sneaking fire crackers up on the roof and putting them in model planes I built tossing them off the roof and watching them blow up. Dressing in jeans and heavy jackets in the middle of summer shooting each other with our daisy cub bb guns. Icing down the hill behind the house with the hose bib from the garage in order to go faster down the hill than the 2 feet of snow would let us go. When we got three feet of snow, we made our own bobsled runs with a lot of shovel work..after we shoveled mom and dads drive way and sidewalks….and then iced the runs down with the hose. Mom called for dinner time…..we kept playing….until Dad yelled that it was time to eat and we all ran like mad to get in the house before we were in trouble. The last place we wanted to be was inside. Now, you can’t get the kids outside. A hurricane came through my area a few years ago. I live in a nice suburban area. Lost power for a week. Wow, there were a lot more kids in the neighborhood than I ever imagined. Power came back…..they all went back to video games. And we wonder why kids are so fat. Pathetic

  im currently a 18 year old college student and i would like to let you know its not entirely ALL the kids fault(talking about your post about kids on video)…. I dont know exactly how long ago you were a kid but unfortunatley things have changed since then…..on of the reasons SOME kids play video is thats what their friends do, and its a way to interact with them and have fun. some video is fine but the current amount is not good its certainly a factor as to why kids are much more obese and such today. now to get to what i am trying to say….basically even if kids want to get together and do stuff like that its much more difficult and thats partly why its not done…the other reason is the reason i had difficulties whith being able to do stuff like that and thats because i can go do it but noone wants to do it….and shooting yourself with bb gun or “sneaking fire crackers up on the roof and putting them in model planes I built tossing them off the roof” is its just not as fun to do it by yourself…also im sure in your day you could make a lemonade stand if you wanted…a girl today got fined for not haveing a permit for making a stand….today there are to many laws and resrictions…luckily i had good parents and played outside with my siblings frequently…dont lose hope there are still some kids who grow up like you did, but its much more difficult…blame the parents and greedy people who sue which makes government make laws that restrict f

  @flippy and all others…..realize that the article isnt saying the parents didnt know she was pregnant….it says that they didnt know for a while because she was concealing it..im sure near the end the knew of it…otherwise why would she have reported a miscarriage…..
  now what she did was abominable and evil…however for those christians(me included) continue to stand up for your beliefs but prove to others how christ like you can be bby not being violent, but also forgive and pray for that girl also if you believe like me that at conception it is a human being then you can see that this is just like an abortion(a gruesome one at that) but its not much different than an abortion….because in abortion and in this the children still get killed….the only difference is in this one it was done by the mother, instead of mother having someone else do it, and how developed the baby is… always when you see terrible things like this remember what it means to be christian, which is to try to be act as close to jesus as we can…. basically live by “what would jesus do”wwjd
  so forgive the girl and pray heavily for the girl and for all those who think like minded and that all of them can be saved.on another note its our job to not support gay people and what they do but to love them as a human being and to pray they see their error and to beileve in jesus…not our job to always yell at them that they going to hell but to say jesus loves you remember we are ALL sinners

  I know i was just feeling good about the latest on the little baby the polish soldiers found being adopted by a loving family who cant have children of their own .They say they wanted a baby and boy or girl didn’t matter to them they were so happy and now there’s this .

  More and more young kids these days are being conditioned to NOT value human life. Just take a look at the majority of video games – they are all pursue and kill games. She should be tried as an adult for the premeditated murder of this innocent child! There is absolutely no excuse for her behavior when there are so many ways in which to give up a baby. I’ll pray for this girl, but I want her locked away from society for a certain amount of years. There needs to be justice for that young child whose own mother killed him! His life mattered.
