Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta said Friday that there has been “limited movement” of some of Syria’s chemical weapons, and that the U.S. isn’t entirely sure what’s happened to them.
Panetta said Syrian officials were moving the weapons in order to better secure them as opposition forces continue to battle President Bashar Assad’s regime.
“There has been intelligence that there have been some moves that have taken place,” Panetta told reporters at the Pentagon. “Where exactly that’s taken place, we don’t know. I don’t have any specific information about the opposition and whether or not they’ve obtained some of this or how much they’ve obtained and just exactly what’s taken place.”
Panetta said the U.S. has confirmed that Syria’s main chemical weapons sites still remain secure. Still, he couldn’t say whether Syrian rebels may have gained access to any of the others. According to CNN, rebel groups have claimed to have taken control of some military sites where they found chemical weapons components.
“But with regards to, you know, the movement of the — of some of this and whether or not they’ve been able to locate some of it, we just don’t know,” Panetta said.
According to the Associated Press, Syria is widely believed to have stockpiled extensive chemical and biological weapons and has threatened to use them if the country comes under attack.
President Barack Obama said in August it would be a “red line” if Syria used chemical weapons or even moved them.
“We have been very clear to the Assad regime, but also to other players on the ground, that a red line for us is we start seeing a whole bunch of chemical weapons moving around or being utilized. That would change my calculus. That would change my equation,” Obama said.

Sep. 28, 2012 at 3:10pmUm, Hello? The WMD have been moved back into Iraq where they came from… Duh. They were there before the Iraq war, we knew they were there. Everyone knew. The UN and the democrats held Bush back from going in to secure them. Iraq was stockpiling WMD from 2002 to 2003. The UN and IAEA were pulled out of Iraq back then because they were refusing to enforce the UN weapons inspections of Iraq. (I do believe the UN sent a sternly worded post card to Iraq about it though.) Satellite other recon photos as well as intel on the ground said there were large stockpiles of WMD. So, after hearing about the attempted purchase of nuclear material by Iraq from Africa, Bush decided to form a coalition of forces to remove the WMD. The UN delayed the actions providing months of time to move the WMD to Syria. Hans Blixx, (remember him?) was sent to Iraq by the UN and performed the inspections and claimed Iraq had disarmed, but not necessarily “WMD Free” and he also admitted that the Iraqis had time to move stuff around. Which also means they didn’t always leave Iraq, but could be moved from inspection site to site. He also said, after saying there were no WMD, that Iraq still had “unresolved disarmament questions”, to which the coalition finally decided Iraq had enough time to provide “immediate, unconditional and active cooperation” in the WMD issue. So, the WMD was moved out to Syria and now it is coming back. So, Bush was right when he said the WMD were there. Now they ar

Sep. 29, 2012 at 1:46amIronic name wakeupusa since clearly you never did. Nonstop mantra from the left was Bush lied and there were no WMD’s even though the intelligence operations from every nation knew Iraq had them. Syria does not now nor have they ever possessed the infrastructure required to produce these weapons. Iraq under Sadam did. He moved a large part of them to Syria in the time of the first Gulf war to hide them for a future day. The bulk of the rest during the second. This was equally well known by the democrat Senators who kept claiming they did not exist and publicly stated Bush was a liar to gain political points over Bush and the Republican party. This news is so old and well known it is not news at all. What comforts me is the promise that whosoever maketh or worketh a lie has no place in the eternity. Meaning I will never again have to coexist with the liars who seem to think they have it so good right now. Their time is limited thank God. This includes any who support lies by repeating them as fact since this makes them liars as well. Throwing away forever for a better position in a life less than a hundred years seems to me to not only be a poor choice, it is also proof of insanity.
