These are the Top 5 Worst Taxes ‘Obamacare’ Will Impose in 2013

The Grover Norquist-founded Americans for Tax Reform, a 501(c)(4) lobbying group that opposes “all tax increases as a matter of principle,” on Friday released a list of what, they say, are the top five worst taxes The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (i.e. “Obamacare”) will impose on Americans in 2013.

Here they are [all block quotes via the report]:

The ‘Obamacare’ Medical Device Tax

Americans For Tax Reform Releases a List of the Top 5 Worst Taxes Obamacare Will Impose in 2013Tax Increase: $20 Billion

Medical device manufacturers employ 409,000 people in 12,000 plants across the country. Obamacare imposes a new 2.3 percent excise tax on gross sales — even if the company does not earn a profit in a given year. In addition to killing small business jobs and impacting research and development budgets, this will increase the cost of your health care — making everything from pacemakers to prosthetics more expensive.

The ‘Obamacare’ ‘Special Needs Kids Tax’

Americans For Tax Reform Releases a List of the Top 5 Worst Taxes Obamacare Will Impose in 2013Tax Increase: $13 Billion

The 30-35 million American who use a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) at work to pay for their family’s basic medical needs will face a new government cap of $2,500 (currently the accounts are unlimited under federal law, though employers are allowed to set a cap).

There is one group of FSA owners for whom this new cap will be particularly cruel and onerous: parents of special needs children.Β  There are several million families with special needs children in the United States, and many of them use FSAs to pay for special needs education. Tuition rates at one leading school that teaches special needs children in Washington, D.C. (National Child Research Center) can easily exceed $14,000 per year. Under tax rules, FSA dollars can be used to pay for this type of special needs education. This Obamacare tax provision will limit the options available to these families.

The ‘Obamacare’ Surtax on Investment Income

Americans For Tax Reform Releases a List of the Top 5 Worst Taxes Obamacare Will Impose in 2013Tax Increase: $123 Billion

This is a new, 3.8 percentage point surtax on investment income earned in households making at least $250,000 ($200,000 single).Β  This would result in the following top tax rates on investment income:

Americans For Tax Reform Releases a List of the Top 5 Worst Taxes Obamacare Will Impose in 2013

Courtesy Americans for Tax Reform

The table above also incorporates the scheduled hike in the capital gains rate from 15 to 20 percent, and the scheduled hike in dividends rate from 15 to 39.6 percent.

The ‘Obamacare’ ‘Haircut’ for Medical Itemized Deductions

Americans For Tax Reform Releases a List of the Top 5 Worst Taxes Obamacare Will Impose in 2013Tax Increase: $15.2 Billion

Currently, those Americans facing high medical expenses are allowed a deduction to the extent that those expenses exceed 7.5 percent of adjusted gross income (AGI).Β  This tax increase imposes a threshold of 10 percent of AGI. By limiting this deduction, Obamacare widens the net of taxable income for the sickest Americans.Β  This tax provision will most harm near retirees and those with modest incomes but high medical bills.

The ‘Obamacare’ Medicare Payroll Tax Hike

Americans For Tax Reform Releases a List of the Top 5 Worst Taxes Obamacare Will Impose in 2013Tax Increase: $86.8 Billion

The Medicare payroll tax is currently 2.9 percent on all wages and self-employment profits.Β  Under this tax hike, wages and profits exceeding $200,000 ($250,000 in the case of married couples) will face a 3.8 percent rate instead. This is a direct marginal income tax hike on small business owners, who are liable for self-employment tax in most cases. The table below compares current law vs. the Obamacare Medicare Payroll Tax Hike:

Look, I am voting for Romney no matter what. They could discover tomorrow that he eats cute fuzzy kittens for breakfast…and I am still voting for him. But only 2 things interest me in this election. Liberty and the rule of law. Which as of late we have none of either. Our Federal Government does many things it has no business doing (rule of law), but we are told we must do these things to appear caring. I don’t care.

I work for a Major Medical Device manufacture. It doesn’t just apply to things like X-ray machines, CTs, and MRIs. It also applies to needles, wheel chairs, blood pressure testers. Everything that moves, and is FDA regulated, even if its a single use item, there is a tax on it.

Also my company wants to higher 3000+ people for $25 and up jobs but they can’t because of all the new taxes…

Hospitals are not buying new equpiment. One hospital is begging us to keep their 14 year old x-ray machine working for the next two years and the company who made it, went out of business 11 years ago. Two hospitals each replaced a 30 year old x-rays machine…. A life of an x-ray machine is 10 to 15 years.

@sgtb What is wrong with you? The last civil war was bloody enough for a millenia…if you are that blood thirsty there are plenty of war torn nations you can go to. We have a Constitutuion and we can fix our problems getting back to the basics. Start with personal responsibilty, the faith of the fouders, and a long hard struggle and hardship to right the problems we face. But if we divide and destroy ourselves all will be lost. We will then become a footnote in someone else’s history books. I will stand to defend what is right, and I am still willing to die for my God, Family, and Country. I truly hope that is your intent also. God Bless and Semper Fi.

Don’t you GJ and RP people get it? In a tight race, as we are in now, a vote for GJ or RP is a vote for Obama. If Obama wins, we may never have another free election. If we loose our free election rights, you will loose ALL opportunity to EVER have a RP or GJ in the White House. You can say I am paranoid or exaggerating about loosing our FREE elections, but look at the executive orders by Obama and how they/He has eroded our constitutional rights. Next, ask yourself what havoc an Obama, unbridled by upcoming elections, Will do to America, our freedoms, our money, our religious liberty, our free speech and yes, our ability to vote in 4 years. Obama has shown us that he intends to remove the things he finds objectionable in our constitution. Don”t be surprised if he allows creates amnesty for ALL illegals, allows them to vote and makes insulting Muhammad a hanging offense.

Seniors…better listen up…..these taxes are not the worst of it…recently we were in a doctor’s waiting room and overheard a doctor talking to two employees about how their patient care was going to change. He said if a patient needed treatment such as surgery, he would have to petition a government panel for permission or he wouldn’t get paid. If the panel decided the patient was “too old” (he didn’t define “two old”) then the treatment would be denied!!! This is what the wonderful “obamacare” has in store for seniors…..a socialist/marxist program, dedicated to lowering the numbers of seniors it needs to support in order to save money!!!! Better check with your doctor to confirm this is true before you vote……the current “administration” must be removed!!!

We all (democrats, Republicans and Independants) need to vote for “THE OTHER GUY” every 4 years until one of these idiots starts to finally fix the problem! It’s really that simple. Obama has made worse, by nearly double, the problem he inherited in just 4 years. If he gets another 4 the debt will be at 22 trillion according to the CBO regarding his policies. Of course the progressive/libs on here don’t think that’s a problem.

I must, but its not your bubble, and its not a dot com bubble, or a housing bubble, or any other of that get rich quick bubble so prevelant in our society today. The same mind set that set us on a true path of destruction. I’ve been doing the hard work that it takes to stay ahead and its working out pretty good. All of you think our near total flame out could be fix in four years. Well I didn’t need Clinton to tell me that it couldn’t. It was something I already knew and save your tenuous grap at campain promises. After all they are Campain Promises. I seen enough of those not come true in my life to properly lower my expectations. I will say though, that President Obama has one of the most remarkable records in regard to completing those promises. This leaves me to wonder if we had seen his whole vision instead of the watered down obstuctionist view I got from my seat, maybe we would be in even better shape.

Once again your not seeing the Shadow Govt and their is a Global shadow govt. A group in almost every industrialized nation on earth. Here in the U.S. it’s called the Council on foreign Relations. There are groups higher up like the Builder-Burg Group (Made up of European Royalty and Bankers)and the Tri-lateral commission. Essentially these are UN-elected Puppet Masters that control the federal reserve and decide the fate of nations. The State Dept has been under the control of the CFR since the 1940′s. They also control most of the Media So learn about them ,I’ll get you started.

To those of you who think you can change anything by voting for Ron Paul or Gary Johnson: You will waste your vote. For what? To make sure Obama destroys every last shred of America that is left? I know you mean well and you may even believe there are enough of you to make a difference. But reality is, neither of those people won a single primary. They are not electable. DON’T vote for Obama by tossing a good Romney vote into the trash. He may not be the greatest choice and he may not be as conservative as we’d like, but for goodness sakes look at the alternative. Just how much do you want to pay to invest in your own demise?

Could someone help me out here….. I read most of the posts and did not find any mention of what I consider the most horrific of the tax increases, the penalty levied on people who do not have insurance which is now a tax according to the supreme court.

Is it correct that this tax is not implemented until 2016? And the ones listed above are just the ones being implemented next year?

Ok, another question. I found this table:

So, basically, you’re looking at penalties of approximately the following at the following income levels:

      Less than $9,500 income = $0
      $9,500 – $37,000 income = $695
      $50,000 income = $1,000
      $75,000 income = $1,600
      $100,000 income = $2,250
      $125,000 income = $2,900
      $150,000 income = $3,500
      $175,000 income = $4,100
      $200,000 income = $4,700
Over $200,000 = The cost of a “bronze” health-insurance plan

But so far I have not found “WHAT DOES THIS BUY YOU?” Do you receive an insurance card and go to your own doctors or do they have specific doctors/clinics you go to?

I have found some places saying 2016 and others saying this tax will be phased in starting in 2014. What does phased in mean and how does that work?

      Anyone?

probably cause its not that horrific. Your numbers are completely inflated. For example, when completely implemented in 2016 a family of 4 would pay a penalty of 2,085. which is the maximum penalty. For most single middleclass people the penalty would be 695. This would get either of them bronze level coverage with a private carrier. All the details are easily found at reliable and respectable websites.
