Noted Economist Says You Should be Worried About Latest Durable Goods Report: Here’s Why
Demand for durable goods (i.e. items that are expected to last for at least three years) is on the decline and a report released on Thursday shows that it has sunken to levels not seen since 2009 — the height of the Great Recession.
“The Commerce Department said Thursday that total durable goods orders fell 13.2 percent in August. That’s the biggest drop since January 2009 when the country was in recession. Aircraft orders fell by nearly 102 percent, pulling down the headline figure,” the Associated Press reports.
Economists had originally predicted a decline of maybe 5 percent. Obviously, they were off by just a little.
“U.S. manufacturing has weakened since the spring. Factories have been hurt by weaker consumer spending and slower global growth that has cut demand for U.S. exports,” the AP adds.
Okay, so what’s the big deal? Maybe we shouldn’t read too much into the data, right?
Well, according to economist David Rosenberg, there’s a part of the report that should raise some red flags. If you look at the three-month moving average* of non-defense capital goods orders (or “core capex [capital expenditures] orders”) excluding aircraft in Thursday’s durable goods report, you’ll note that it was -4.1 percent in August.
(*A statistical method for identifying the direction of a trend.)
“History shows when the trend weakened to the level we see today, the economy was in recession 100 percent of the time,” Rosenberg claims in his latest “Breakfast with Dave” note.
Furthermore, as Rosenberg notes, not only is the durable goods report obviously bad news for the manufacturing sector, but it also means bad news for the job market. You see, as the following chart illustrates, there’s an 83 percent correlation between core capex orders and jobs:
And there’s an 86 percent correlation between capex orders and the stock market:
Bottom line: Durable goods are down and manufacturing is down. According to the data presented in the above, not only does the report bode poorly for the already struggling job market, but it could also mean we’re headed for another recession.

THEBURNINGTRUTH is stuck in a place where leaders must be accountable or face the wrath of the body public.
Those days have faded into the morass we have today. Obama needs do nothing. Except for talk radio, Blaze TV, and Fox News…which are easily dismissed as extreme right-wing clamoring, the media will continue to ignore the negatives. As long as that remains true then he can and will do anything he wishes. He will likely start the new year off with some severe executive orders which will increase the power of the executive branch significantly.
Conservatives will howl and the Republican dominated house will condemn it etc. it will likely go through the courts which should; with delays and appeals take about 4 years or so.
In other words he wil continue to get his way.

Posted on October 1, 2012 at 5:28amRemember everyone, what most, if not all, economists and analysts have said, where all of this financial meltdown occurred, ‘with the housing market’.
Bill Clinton signed a law that required banks to draw up mortgages, for anyone, no matter what their income. Sounds nice, but that was about 7 years prior to the ‘meltdown’, because these people could not afford to pay the mortgage, after about 5 years of having it. Bwawney Fwank said there was not a problem, when confronted several times by the Bush Administration. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were holding these mortgages, and when the human excrement hit the oscillating rotator, it began a domino effect.
Soooo, if someone is to blame for the “Financial Meltdown”, it should lay in the lap of Billy (Cigar dip) Clinton!!!!
Oh, and if you think Hussein is worried about the economy, you are wrong!!!! His plan is to make it bad enough, so everyone gets on the government dole!!!! Overload the system, a Saul Alinsky idea, and then have a ‘carrot’ waving, for the idiots, that believe in him!!!!!

Posted on September 29, 2012 at 4:44pmRECESSION? RECESSION?
Are these people blind? I called out the recession back in 2005 when I saw gas hit $2.65 a gal. I saw construction slowing down, the stock market falling, the banks failing, the auto industry going under,,,,,
Need I say more? Sound familiar? It’s the 80′s all over again, only this time worse. The goverment bailed out the banks, and the auto industry, etc., and said “be thankful because we won’t do it again”.
But they did it again. It didn’t work then, it’s not working now.
If They want to stimulate the economy, take all that bail out money and give it back to the people who realy need it. They would spend it on the durable goods, the states would get some revenue from the sales taxes and everything would get moving again.
If you haven’t already, grab hold of someting solid and hang on. The 80′s took about 12 yrs. to get through. I figure we have another 5 or 6 with this round.

Posted on September 29, 2012 at 4:41pmDurable goods??? When’s the last time you bought anything that lasted 3 years?! Even refrigerators only have a two-year warranty nowadays… Maybe people are SICK & TIRED of wasting hard-earned dollars on CR*P MADE IN CHINA and are realizing their OLD STUFF is better than anything they can buy NEW; many are buying USED GOODS because it’s better-made and will LAST LONGER & PERFORM BETTER or they’re learning to get along with something they’ve had for decades.
Also, the UNIONS & Manufacturers keep resorting to Dirty Tricks & Schemes to force us into buying more CR*P if we do invest in a big-ticket item, like a new bed-set or mattress: NOW they come in non-flippable, one-side only mattress (the other side is a wooden frame, which cuts the life of the mattress in about one-half), and they make the mattress DEEPER (taller) so you have to buy all new sheets to fit them! WHO *approves* such transparent, greedy schemes? The CONSUMERS, if they’re dumb enough to fall for this stuff and buy this cr*p. Hopefully, consumers are CATCHING ON, which may explain the decline in purchase of big-ticket items (not to mention dollars are harder to come by these days).
Also: Article states “Aircraft orders fell by nearly 102 percent,” Maybe DHS/TSA has had something to do with the fact that fewer people are FLYING, thus fewer aircraft are needed…?
Americans are learning to DO MORE WITH LESS; and it’s time we TEACH our GOVERNMENT to do the same.

32 years later. I have told her to repair it & NOT to scrap it ever just repair it. Same thing goes with vacuums, Mom has 2 Hoover ones that are on average of 30 to 35 years old still work fantastic! Will never get rid of them compared to the crap they make today. All these so-called “goods” they make today are made in China & last only two or three years then cost more to fix it than to buy a new one!

Posted on September 29, 2012 at 4:39pmDO YOU REMEMBER JANUARY 3, 2007?
I’ve been saying this for years, but this email probably explains it
better and more clearly.
Remember that on October 9, 2007, 11 months before our “economic
crisis” occurred (that was actually created), the Dow hit its highest
point ever, closing at 14,164.53 and reaching 14,198.10 intra-day level 2 days later. Unemployment was steady at 4.7%. But things were
already being put in place to create the havoc we’ve all been experiencing since then. And it all started, as this email explains,
on January 3, 2007. –LFL
I’m sending this to each of you regardless of your party preferences
because I believe it is something you may not have considered.
This tells the story, why Bush was so “bad” at the end of his term.
Don’t just skim over this, it’s not very long, read it slowly and let
it sink in. If in doubt, check it out!!!
The day the Democrats took over was not January 22nd 2009, it was
actually January 3rd 2007, which was the day the Democrats took over
the House of Representatives and the Senate, at the very start of the
110th Congress.
The Democrat Party controlled a majority in both chambers for the
first time since the end of the 103rd Congress in 1995.
For those who are listening to the liberals propagating the fallacy
that everything is “Bush’s Fault”, think about this: January 3rd, 2007
was the day the Democrats took over the Senate and the Co

Exactly. They are selfish. BUT the only thing they will remember is that once the big picture materializes, they, THEY, will the ones that will come to the realization that they were lied too, deceived, and wronged. Granted by that time we as a country will be in the middle of civil unrest, police actions, and chaos, but sometimes that type uglyness and discoarse is the spark that brings us back to who we were. Leaders will emerge and slowly the evil that brought us to this (that) point will be purged. History is on our side.

Posted on September 29, 2012 at 4:08pmIt has seized up not because of the American Government so much as the America citizens who have little or no common sense. the battle cry 20 years ago was buy American, we’d rather buy Chinese, Mexican, Pakistan, Bangladesh or elsewhere. We blame the crash of the housing market on banks making loans to people who could not then and never would be able to pay them – that was a government forced program – even though they admitted at the time that there would be many many more foreclosures – but it was the public that bought it – the government just provided for it. and when a house became an investment rather than a home – that guaranteed it’s failure. What drives up the cost of labor in the US so that little or no profit can be made? why cannot the U.S. labor market compete with the global market? Why do you invest in Wall Street stocks when you KNOW that to make a dividend pay they have to find cheaper labor, cheaper energy, less government regulation and taxation and just general interference in business – and where there are people that want to work and aren’t being paid by the government NOT to work?

Inventory data, MSI, shadow credit, current account, etc. have all been pointing this way for three or more months. Chinese, Japan, Europe indicators all going same way. This will be reported as recession in jan/feb.

Posted on September 29, 2012 at 3:51pmAgree. But if President Marxist DOES win, how does he spin it as Bush’s fault? Maybe it’s the Republicans fault because they dared to actually run a candidate during tough economic times? Perhaps all those small business owners haven’t done enough with the business that someone else GAVE them? Or will it be High Efficiency Toilets instead of ATMs and any Nativity scenes on display?

It won’t matter who he blames or how he tries to spin – but he won’t do either – there will be no need to. Blame and spin are needed now to get him re-elected. Americans WILL wake up when their taxes, grocery and their energy bills go skyrocketing out of their reach. Obama thinks this United States will continue with him in command – it won’t. The Constitution is ALL that holds this Republic together – it is NOT the government. and it will fall apart. He should take a real good look at the Russian revolution – not just the Czar was killed – his whole family.
