Here’s the Drastic Measure Janet Napolitano Took to Protect Her Own Online Privacy (Would You Do It Too?)

Janet Napolitano (Photo: AP/Eduardo Verdugo)
There are many tips out there for protecting online privacy, but the head of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano has one of her own that could be considered one of the simplest and most secure of them all. Unfortunately, few would choose to do it.
If you want to do as she does to stay secure, then don’t use email — “at all.” CNN reported Napolitano being described by some as a “Luddite” for choosing not to use email, but made the decision due to her sensitive position regarding national security. Here’s more from CNN on why she avoids one of the most mainstream forms of communication:
“For a whole host of reasons. So, I don’t have any of my own accounts and that, you know, I’m very secure,” Napolitano noted at a Washington conference about cyber security.
“Some would call me a Luddite but you know. But that’s my own personal choice and I’m very unique in that regard I suspect,” Napolitano added.
CNN reported Napolitano also discussing at the conference Congress’ CIPSA (the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act), which was passed in the House earlier this year but also had a threatened veto from the White House. CIPSA would provide the framework for private companies to report cybersecurity breaches to the government in an effort to better protect critical infrastructure. Napolitano also said an executive order, not yet viewed by President Barack Obama, is being drafted regarding security standards between public and private entities.

Posted on October 1, 2012 at 2:22pmEveryone serving the dictator makes me want to puke. Get ready folks, there is going to be trouble after the election no matter who wins. If Obammy wins, fraud will be discovered and he will really run America into the ground financially, therefore we will be subject to takeover. If Romney wins, the blacks and the media will go insane with the racist claims, eventually causing mass riots. Like I said, either way, be prepared for it to get ugly. Who would have thought that one administration could destroy the strongest country in the world in only four years.

Well, if you broadcast your address like a fool, yeah. It’s not that she’s doing this for security reasons though, it’s to make it harder for her to be investigated or exposed for criminal acts.

So he has not used Facebook or text for over two years.
How sad is it, to know in your heart that our nation has come to this. None of us should ever have to fear using Facebook or texting, or anything else.
So when will the Gov’t start using this information against us? My guess is just as soon as the get that new computer center up and running in Utah? You know, the one that is so many times lager than our Federal Govt buildings in DC… or Congress .
It is simply a mater of time before that shoe drops!

Posted on October 1, 2012 at 1:23pmAnother reason we need to educate ourselves in using encryption in our emails. It’s not as hard as a lot of people think it is. When ever you send an email, it’s like writing on the back of a postcard. When you encrypt it using a public key system, its like putting it in a sealed container and shipping it. No one can read it’s content except for the recipient that has the private key. Look at a book called Encryption for Dummies. It’s a good book to get started with. Also take a look at using Truecrypt to secure files and it even supports whole disk encryption. It’s open source and has been vetted. It’s better than nothing.

Well, as you said about TrueCrypt, “it’s better than nothing.”
I’d say the same thing about email encryption. The trouble is that the people that I’d be most concerned about already have the computing power and talent to crack just about any mainstream encryption algorithm. If you know of a more formidable encryption method, I’m all ears, though. Then there’s the trouble that, as soon as you encrypt something, you immediately cease to blend in and draw attention to yourself.
I guess encryption, if nothing else, adds that extra step they’d have to go through to read your email. There are other methods of hiding email content, but those rely more on obscurity.

Sure, the best way is to not send anything sensitive.
The trouble is, the people with whom you communicate via email may not exercise the same level of discretion. Most people don’t realize the level of scrutiny that’s quietly taking place, and even if you inform them, they brush you off thinking it can’t be true.

Posted on October 1, 2012 at 3:58pmThe truth of the matter is that 99% of all emails are frivelous nonsense nobody cares about. And if you’re in a position where you actually posess information people want, then encryption isn’t going to help you.

Posted on October 3, 2012 at 5:51amI don’t trust ANY encryption software. Remember when PGP was so vaunted a few years ago as unbreakable, and then the feds grabbed it’s creator and made him give up the goods? You can bet that NSA has already got a backdoor into ALL encryption software. They don’t have to crack any codes … they already have the keys.
