Have you ever wondered what might happen when you shoot a pistol under water — what it sounds like and how the water looks as the bullet whizzes through liquid?
Even if you haven’t pondered this question before, Andrew Tuohy, who maintains Vuurwapen Blog, did and took high-speed footage of the event to give you a look.
Tuohy doesn’t write much about the specific observations as to what happens when you shoot a pistol under water — the footage speaks for itself — but he does write that the gun wasn’t damaged. He told Gizmodo the shock through the water from the shot made it feel like “he was kicked in the chest.

Watch him fire a Glock 22 in his pool:
Tuohy isn’t the only one who has wanted see what happens when you shoot firearms under water. The guys on the Smarter Every Day YouTube channel conducted their own test last year. Check it out:
While Tuohy’s footage of the underwater shot is rather artistic, he also makes artwork out of bullets. On his blog he includes photos of expanded hollow-point bullets that appear as flowers. He added precious stones to some, which he writes he has been collecting since age 10.

Check out Tuohy’s blog for more of his work and other information as a “fact-based firearms resource” here.
Touhy is a former U.S. Navy Hospital Corpsman who was honorably discharged and still shoots about 400 rounds per week. He writes that he currently works as a technical consultant to firearm and ammunition manufacturers and also provides photos and video services for those in the industry.

Oct. 1, 2012 at 6:05pmThe Mythbusters fired various calibers and weapons at water to see if the movie footage of bullets zipping by an escaping person underwater was real or not. In most of the tests, the bullet did not go very far. In the first video, the bullet barely leaves the frame near the end of the video. The Mythbusters fired a .50 cal at the water and picked up shreds of lead and copper a short distance from where it entered the water. The splash did almost hit the roof of the pool building.

Oct. 2, 2012 at 10:19amThis is an extremely stupid thing to do. Firearms are not designed to handle pressures generated with water flooding the barrel and at depth with added water column pressure to boot, it’s boneheaded as hell. No firearm manufacturer in the world will be responsible for the safety or integrity of a firearm operated thusly. You have been warned. You may bet away with it (or not) with some firearms and some firearms may blow up in your hands and face.

Oct. 1, 2012 at 5:26pmThere is another lesson here (if you did not already know it). When firing a revolver, keep your fingers *away* from the cylinder/barrel gap.
I’m sorry he has not captured underwater shots from a bolt action rifle, just because they would be interesting to see.

VERY artistic–I guess it all has to do with one’s perspective (no target pun intended), one can find beauty in ANYTHING if they are so inclined.
I also LOVE hi/low-sppeed action shots ad those were very cool:)

Oct. 1, 2012 at 3:47pmThis is dangerous information to put out, only certain pistols with certain bullets, (like the Glock pictured with hard ball, military bullet) have been tested underwater without blowing up. It’s why the seals use it. The Glock has a firing pin modification called the maritime spring cups. Which lets the intruding water get by the pin during striker fall, after exiting water.
Trained personnel who use Glocks underwater know they must obey several rules:
1) use only a Glock Model 17 with amphibious spring cups (reliability issue);
2) use only 9mm FMJ subsonic, sealed primer ammo;
3) completely immerse the pistol and get *all* the air out of the barrel;
4) wear protective ear plugs, gloves, wet suit, face mask, etc.;
5) do not fire near solid objects or in enclosed spaces to prevent return
concussion.
However, any Glock — even those not equipped with maritime spring cups — will normally fire while submersed underwater. But doing so may generate excessive internal pressure and may cause the pistol to literally blow up. This is especially true with the use of high-pressure rounds (such as the .40 S&W/357 SIG) or hollow-point bullets.
I recall a reported incident where a Glockster on a boating holiday decided to show some friends how his Glock would fire underwater (because Tommy Lee Jones said so in the movies). He stuck his hand overboard, pulled the trigger and came back with a bunch of shredded plastic and a badly injured hand.

Oct. 1, 2012 at 3:56pmShot guns should be sold in bubble pack at H-Depot and Lowe’s. Shot gun ammo should also be available at the check out isles of super markets. People who don’t like guns could the “no ammo” check out.

Oct. 1, 2012 at 8:30pmActualy SEALs don’t use Glocks chum. 90% of them use custom Sig Sauer P226′s, the other 10% use custom 1911′s. Apparently you don’t know any SEALs.

thanks for the legit info. lot’s of disputes over the “glock under water”. your post solves it. i think some people get confused between firing when the weapon IS submerged vs WAS submerged.
*not sure how the shotguns at Home Depot fits in….

Oct. 1, 2012 at 3:27pmFinally! A youtube “channel” I can tune in to! This was very interesting (and fun!). I knew that revolvers had a built-in tendency to lose pressure through all the openings before the barrel, but to see it expressed thus was fascinating!
You should have saved this for…FIREARM FRIDAYS!!!
