It’s Official: California Bans Reparative Therapies Intended to Turn Gay Youths Straight

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (TheBlaze/AP) — It’s official. Gov. Jerry Brown has signed legislation to ban a controversial form of psychotherapy that’s aimed at making gay teenagers straight. Last month, TheBlaze reported that the measure had passed the California legislature. Brown’s action makes California the first state to render such actions illegal.

Effective Jan. 1, mental health practitioners are prohibited from performing sexual orientation change efforts — known as reparative or conversion therapy — for anyone under 18.

The therapies “have no basis in science or medicine and they will now be relegated to the dustbin of quackery,” Brown said in a statement.

Mainstream associations representing psychiatrists and psychologists have dismissed reparative therapy in recent decades. A number of mental health associations in California – including the state’s Board of Behavorial Sciences, the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists and the California Psychological Association – supported the legislation.

But some organizations and ministries continue to use counseling and prayer to try to help conflicted Christians rid themselves of unwanted homosexual inclinations. Gay rights activists have said the damage they inflict on individuals can be deep and lasting and can put youth at higher risk of depression and suicide.

“We’re grateful to Gov. Brown for standing with California’s children,” the Human Rights Campaign said in a statement. “LGBT youth will now be protected from a practice that has not only been debunked as junk science, but has been proven to have drastically negative effects on their well-being.”

The group called on other states to follow California’s lead on the issue.

Conservative religious groups and some Republicans have argued that banning conversion therapy would hinder parents’ right to provide psychological care for children experiencing gender confusion.

The Encino, Calif.-based National Association for Research and Therapy on Homosexuality said in August that the bill was a case of “legislative overreach.” They said Democratic state Senator Ted Lieu’s claims of harm to children were based on politics, not research.

Lieu, who sponsored the bill, said the law will stop children from being psychologically abused.

Brown signed the bill Saturday amid a busy weekend that saw him act on more than 100 pieces of legislation, including a bill he signed late Sunday that would allow some illegal immigrants to get California drivers licenses.

The bill lets the Department of Motor Vehicles issue licenses to illegal immigrants eligible for work permits under a new Obama administration policy. It requires the department to accept as proof of legal residence whatever document the federal government provides to participants in its deferred action program.

The governor also signed into law a bill that will allow parents who don’t have their children vaccinated to enroll their children in school. Parents would have to obtain a waiver from a physician or a nurse practitioner saying they received information about the benefits and risks of immunization.

Brown vetoed a bill that could have protected illegal immigrants from deportation if they committed minor infractions. The bill was dubbed “anti-Arizona” legislation, a reference to that state’s immigrant identification law.

He also vetoed legislation that would have provided overtime pay, meal breaks and other labor protections to an estimated 200,000 caregivers, nannies and house cleaners. The Democratic governor said they deserve fair pay and safe working conditions but said the bill “raises a number of unanswered questions.”

I’ve said it before and I will say it again. Being gay is NOT a choice, or a genetic malfunction. These children and adults have been taken over by an unclean, and perverted SPIRIT. It will take a spiritual God to deliver them from this thing. They cannot control themselves or these perverted affections when this spirit stirs them up. They have NO control over it!! Therapy will not work, so Gov. Brown can pass all the stupid laws he wants, it doesn’t matter. For the nay-sayers on here, don’t bother arguing with me, you won’t ever convince me this isn’t true…..I’ve SEEN it with my own eyes.

@Hanner Really? So you mean to tell me that there is some “demon” or “unclean spirit” as you put it, possessing them? I take it your straight, what if I told you that there was an unclean spirit possessing you and you need a spiritual God to help you?

If your going to use a “Higher power” or “Religious” views get your facts straight, the bible has two testaments, old and new, and the only place it says in the bible where homosexuality is bad is the old testament. The new testament is there because God had a son Jesus that died for your sins and not anywhere in the new testament do you find where homosexuality is bad. So what do you believe?

Also the Bible was written by “Man” saying that they got this information from God and Jesus, you know mankind is corrupt, so why not slip a lie here and there while they were writing? Another this about the Bible is it doesn’t have all the books, the Bible is basically made up of journey and testimony’s of those that lived back then and is put together, but not all of them made it into the Bible because “Man” chose what to put in and leave out.

Romans 1: v18 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness,21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.26 Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. 27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.28 Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done. 1 Cor. 6- v9 Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders…..Don’t try to correct me when you are IGNORANT of the Bible and where God stands on immoral issues. I could have just said that it was God’s judgment on these people.

All this needless worry about a small part of the population. When do we take on adulterers who make up a much larger percentage of the population and is so bad that God put it on the big ten list of things that were sinful. When does TheBlaze and the religious right start screaming at adulterers who certainly were not “born this way” and have every ability to not act on their desires. Too close to home for many Christians I suspect.

I have been through an exorcism to “rid” myself of “homosexual demons”… I was strapped to a table. Prayed over, had the Bible laid on me. Given electro-schock treatments, Waterboarded. It doesn’t work. I’m still gay. It was after I accepted that this is how God wanted me, that I was truly able to see His love in my life. FIghting against the way God created me caused me nothing but heartache. Thank God He created me as a gay man!! His blessings on my life have only been apparent since I accepted myself as a gay child of God. I have no idea what you “witnessed”, but perhaps it was that 0.01% that can change their orientation (according to Alan Chambers, CEO of Exodus). For the rest of us, this therapy is dangerous.

@Hanner The “Spiritual fight” you speak of I doubt is real, as for people saying the “devil” made them gay is really a far fetched idea. God say’s he loves all of us, but can’t allow “Gay’s” into heaven(not quoted, just summed up) then I do not want to enter the gates of Heaven because I feel that a God like that who cannot accept his creations sexual preferences is not a God I would want to follow.

Now before anyone say’s anything, no I do no need “saving”, “prayed” for, or anything of the sort.

Also Hanner and everyone else, I again say that the Bible say’s “though shall not judge” and yet here you all are, Judging.

I can see that I’ve stirred up a bee’s nest with some of you. But, my position is unchanged. Furthermore, those of you that are confused about the “gay” issue, let me make one thing very clear. There will be NO gay people in heaven! God did not make you that way, and his word condemns that lifestyle in the OT and the NT teachings. Gay people stand in direct conflict with God over this issue. Don’t argue with me on this, argue with God, he said it. For those of you that want to stand behind the banner of “God loves us all.” John 14-v15–Jesus says, “If you love me, you will obey what I command.” What was that???? The Lord equates love with obedience. 1 John 2:4–The one who says “I know him” and does not keep his commandments is a liar.
@TMARENDS- you are deceived and believe a lie. I don’t know who did all this exorcism stuff on you, but I can assure you that they were NOT of God. Whoever God calls for his service, he EQUIPS them with power to handle these things. @INDEPENDENT–you also believe a lie. If you continue to believe what you do, don’t worry, you won’t be in heaven.

Some want to be be cleansed from sin and deliverance from the results of sin. Some do not.
A would be disciple asked Jesus if he could first go home to bury his father and then he would follow Him. Jesus said “let the dead bury their own dead”.
Some others cynically asked, “are we also sinners”? Jesus said “because you say you have no sin, your sin remains”.

For this age, after His ascension, Jesus sent His Holy Spirit to do greater works than He could in the flesh. HIs Holy Spirit convicts/convinces all that are spiritually dead because of sin, that one must be born again. He Who knew no sin became sin on our behalf so that we who knew no righteousness, might be the righteousness of God.

The “might” depends on us taking this free gift by confessing Jesus as Lord and Saviour and believing in ones heart that Jesus has been raised from the dead. His Holy Spirit gives the measure of faith to believe and live. Life or death, blessings or curses, Heaven or hell is a choice. He says to choose life that one may live.

When one is born again, one is born of the Holy Spirit. His Spirit will then transmit, declare, and diclose all that has been given Jesus to overcome the world that He already overcame for us. His Holy Spirit will reveal His written Word and yield the mind of Christ which is the power of God for salvation. You are in this world, but you will not be of it.
Blood of Jesus bought, Holy Spirit taught.

There is NO salvation from the worlds consensus

I think you mean that there is no mention of homosexuality in the Gospels and you are right. There are a few mentions of homosexuality in the new testament.

I Corinthians 6:9-10 – Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

I Timothy 1:9-10 – We also know that the law is made not for the righteous but for lawbreakers and rebels, the ungodly and sinful, the unholy and irreligious, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers, for the sexually immoral, for those practicing homosexuality, for slave traders and liars and perjurers—and for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine

I don’t know this. It’s an educated guess. Nurses who have had babies teach Lamaze & breast-feeding classes. Shrinks who have been through a divorce counsel couples. Social Workers that have been sexually assaulted counsel rape victims. Christians that have been saved evangelize to those that haven’t.
Who else is more qualified to convert gays than those who have been converted, themselves?

Actually it is genetic, if you have ever visited a person who has lost all memory, be it by accident or sickness, they remember there sexual orientation. How would you explain it? If it wasn’t genetic then they wouldn’t remember it, it would be like you are referring to a “choice”. However they do remember, so somewhere in the persons genetic makeup is a determination of what your sexual orientation is.

I agree with Gov. Jerry Brown and fully support this because the “reparative therapy” is nothing but damaging. This isn’t a proven science and the people who it is used on are damaged and it increases the suicidal rate. Trying to change someone from Gay to straight is like trying to do the opposite, it just dosen’t work and it causes damage without any benefits

Independent_Supporter — the homosexual community was in an uproar about 15 years ago when the scientific community reported that they had found a ‘gay gene’. The homosexual community was upset that anyone would claim that being homosexual is genetic.

I am disappointed that the state government has closed an option for people who are seeking private health care. There are stories of those who have chosen the homosexual life style to give up their life style.

A friend’s son decided he was homosexual. He claimed he wouldn’t want anyone to live his miserable life as he has. The young man was found dead in a park in Arizona — someone had killed him. The young man had a short, tragic, miserable life. But made life choices that brought him to his untimely end — he was not forced to use illegal drugs, he was not forced to wear purple mascara and make up, he as not forced to opt to spend his time in the fringes of society.

Taking away health care options for othesr is a BAD thing. Sad that those who are miserable do not want others to escape their life style (Recall comedian Ellen DeGenerius (sp?) had a female company who dumped her for a male company. She decided she was no longer lesbian)

From a purely evolutionary standpoint, those who argue that “gay” is genetic are on scientifically unsound ground. It is true that modern science allows humanity to replicate genetic codes that evolution would have eliminated, thus a modern gay can reproduce with the aid of medicine. However, the evolutionary process requires millenia to change a species in any significant way. Thus, the advent of modern reproductive medicine is but a tiny, tiny instant in mans evolutionary course. Because natural selection would, over time, eliminate genetic codes that make reproduction less likely, it is ludicrous to suggest that “gay” is part of humanity’s genetic make-up. Only political “ends oriented” junk science draws different conclusions. That is not to say that there are not occasional genetic errors, such as hermaphrodites, but the vast, vast majority of “gay” is the result of environmental factors, such as physical and psychological abuse, rape, being raised by gay parents, growing up in an hyper-sexual society, etc. Understand that I am not taking a position on whether it is ok to be gay, it is not an issue for me and I prefer to let others live as they choose so long as they are not hurting me or mine.

To say that gays cannot go straight is to ignore the many, many stories of people who have done so. However, the gay media and public are more than happy to ignore these success stories to justify their own behavioral choices.

INDEPENDANT…I’m sure you have some sort of proof that people with dementia of alzhymers still remember their sexual oreintation. I’ve never seen a study like that and I have heavily researched this topic. Homosexuality is absolutely NOT genetic. It is a psychological predisposition just like ALL sexual deviance. Pediphilia, bestiality, ect…we all have things we struggle with. It is still deviant and vile and should be fought at every step and NEVER EVER taught to our children as “normal”

Now, if these therapies are PROVEN to be abusive or cause long lasting damage (which there is NO proof of) then children need to be protected…however, since all these allegations are either outright false or have NO proof, it is 100% the choice of the parent to help to save their child’s soul by any means necessary.

@Wise One: That is not exactly an accurate representation of how evolution works. We can find several instances in nature where a genetic attribute acts contrary to the individual’s survival/reproduction, but benefits the survival of the kin-group. It is the gene that is the agent of evolution, not the individual.

Much of what you said makes even more sense when factoring in the Political aspect. Democrats bond groups to the party through pandering that leads to dependence. The flavor of Pandering directed toward the Radial Gay Community is to make their behavior protected by law, bordering on laws found in the protected species protections Act, maybe there pandering should be called The Alternative Gender Protection Act.

The brain is a tricky thing, what you have to understand is that scientists and doctors alike are still trying to decode what really makes us tick. The long term and short term memories of individuals are really random, but genetically you like certain things and if those certain things are some types of food or music you will most likely remember it. So yes, they are genetic markers, but think of it as a tree with many branches one tree stands for one specific genetic marker, for instance “Likes” (Just using it as an example) and that the tree has many branches which contain the specific likes of the individual in question.

So another genetic marker would be your sexual orientation and it would have one branch or many branches depending on the person in question. So again I say yes those that you used would be examples, however they would be branches to one single genetic marker among the other genetic markers that make us who we are.

Actually I said no such thing. It appears that conservative bigots have zero understanding of evolution and genetics. The fact that heterosexual parents give birth to homosexual children does not disprove a “gay gene” both parents with brown eyes can give birth to a blue eyed child.

But, alas, from a group that rejects actual science in favor of creation myths this display of ignorance regarding evolution and genetics is to be expected.

homosexuality is not genetic.. this has been proven in study after study using identical twins where one is gay and the other is not. the mere fact that there are genetically identical twins that are split between sexual orientations proves the developmental aspect of homosexuality… also study after study shows that human sexuality is quite fluid until the low 20′s. plenty of good research in this area just none of it is advertised.

Just because they used Identical twins doesn’t make their study correct. Identical twins may look the same and have some of the same genetic markers as the other, but if you delve deeper you discover that identical twins don’t always agree on something or like the same thing as the other. So to suggest that scientists have said that there is no “Gay gene” is preposterous, all they have discovered is the same thing that has already been found out before: Twins can like other things and not agree on anything.

You forget that scientists and doctors tell you that they do not have all the answers and that they also point out in most of there “Experiments” is that there work isn’t pure truth and that they can only “hypothesize” on it.

So that being said, you that disbelieve merely because of lack of scientific proof or because of a religious reason need to take a second look at things. Also if I may point out, no one asks how you were born straight or go around telling you it’s impossible, you were born that way just as some are born different like blacks and whites. We are all human, we are all equal, mankind just has ways of trying to make itself feel and look better by being racist and criticizing others because you can’t handle someone being different.

What about all those hetero couples giving birth to homosexual children, I guess there is a hole in your bigoted theory.

Well ,then we would have to state that you believe in the homogene and we have already established that the homocommunity had a hissy over that already.

So what is it? A hetrosexual family giving birth to a homosexual? OR is a hetero giving birth to hetero that is influenced into homosexuality?

@encinom “What about all those hetero couples giving birth to homosexual children, I guess there is a hole in your bigoted theory.”

Actually, that’s excellent evidence against the existence of a gay gene. Considering that only a minority of homosexuals use surrogate parents, any kind of “gay gene” would seem to be a self-solving problem, even if this gene is recessive (i.e. capable of “flying under the radar” and passing through straight parents). This is because the gene basically stops with whoever turns out gay, resulting in its eventual extinction in the gene pool. This process would seem to work itself out in just a few generations.

The latest research, by the way, says that, if there is a gay gene at all, its influence is not total, there is still room for environmental and other factors in the process.

Also, calling it “evolution” would be somewhat misleading. Such a change would not be MACROevolution, but MICROevolution, which, unlike macro, happens to be quite well proven.

@Shotgun: It is a very superficial understanding of genetic evolution that claims that a supposed “gay gene” would stop with itself. There is nothing in the study of human evolution which requires that attributes which are disadvantageous to the individual must be selected against. We see numerous example of genetic traits that support the idea that evolution functions on the level of genes, rather than on the individual, so that a characteristic, such as homosexuality, which obviously does nothing to enhance the fecundity of the individual, nevertheless provides greater chances for kin-group reproduction via reduced competition for resources in general as well as a greater number of potential caregivers in social animals.

Which is not to say that homosexuality is a trait that one finds in one’s genes, per se, but evidence supports the hypothesis that it is the result of chemical/hormonal interactions during natal development, which would suggest that the “gay gene” is something that is expressed in the mother (though men and women may both carry the gene) and is a function of developmental embryology.

Since they no longer teach real math or science in their schools, they are all ok with the sad state of affairs. However, when they come to the federal government demanding some of my tax dollars to float their egregiously out of control spending addiction, I will be on the phone to my representatives to make California sleep in the bed California has made.

This is one reason I don’t have children. I feel like the state will simply take them away and raise them for me (oh, except I’m stuck with the bill). To try to raise them or influence them myself is “abuse”.
However, since the media would continue to tell our kids that they were born gay and it sure ain’t the media that’s affecting them, and to try to convince them otherwise is abusive, I guess they might as well just go ahead and outlaw any dissent. I don’t believe in “pray away the gay” anyway. I am an atheist. I would simply try common sense: “Son/Daughter, you know, it makes perfect sense that you are gay since both your mother and I are secretly gay as well. But you don’t want US following our urges, now do you? If we had done that before, you’d have never been born.”

Rich Deem’s bout with Crohn’s disease

“God went to a lot of trouble to save me from His righteous wrath. After graduating with a masters degree in 1979, I began my career doing research in the field of immunology. Things went very well and within six years I had published eight articles (five of which I was primary author) in prestigious scientific journals. I was running my own life and ignoring God until I got very sick. The tests revealed I had Crohn’s disease, a serious, incurable inflammatory disease of the intestines. I found myself unable to do things using my own abilities and strength. The medicines were not working and I found myself being bedridden in severe pain for two months. I cried out to God and promised to try to follow Him and do what He wanted me to do (although I had no idea what that was at the time). Within three months all symptoms of Crohn’s disease had disappeared. It was a miracle that demonstrated God’s love for me. Three years later, when I heard the message of salvation, I was ready to accept it, because I knew of God’s love and power. I am even grateful for the suffering, since, without it, I would have probably never turned to God.”

If YOU, Encinom, were at his bedside as he rose up, cured of his symptoms, what would you say?

Would you say “You just got lucky and your bronze-age, goat-hearder myth of a tyrant you call god had nothing to do with it!” ?

@infection and sorry – Heaven forbid we “force” our children to do things beyond their will. After all, they should be able to make ALL of their own choices regardless of what we think. I guess under this way of thinking they should be able to skip school since they find it a drag on life, begin having unprotected sex at whatever age – because hey, it’s human nature and if it feels good do it, and consume alcohol and drugs freely because it helps them fit in better socially. As a parent, I know that I will still have final say over what my kids will and won’t be subjected to because I believe it is in their best interest. Not because they’re stupid, but because they do still need guidance and are not completely capable of understanding what the ramifications are of their decisions. I don’t believe it’s the state’s responsibility to tell me what is best for my children. My wife and I brought them into this world without the state’s help, we use our own hard-earned money to raise them without the state’s help, so I don’t want the state telling me how to raise my children.

Adoption and homosexuality are two different things. Adoption is a choice that is not against the design of mother nature. Heterosexual couples can adopt, either because they want to, or because disease or genetics prevents them from having children. Homosexuals can not have children by design. The original purpose of every living creature is to make more of that creature, to procreate. Homosexuals defy this purpose, and therefore, defy mother nature.

Now, some people out there say, “well, I’m heterosexual, but I was robbed of my ability to make children by my genes, or by an accident, or by an illness such as cancer; are you saying I’m worthless to humanity as well?” No. Mother nature took that ability away from you; you didn’t make a willing choice to go against her. That’s a totally different scenario.

The argument for “children being born gay” is also a stupid argument, not to get too far off subject. Everyone that I’ve ever met that was homosexual, I’ve seen clear reasons for their perversion. My wife has an uncle who is homosexual. He’s the only one of 13 children that is gay. It’s clear why he’s gay: his parents left his raising up to his sisters, who taught him how to wear make-up and spent all their time talking about guys around him. My step-mother has a sister that’s a lesbian. It’s also clear why: she was an outcast who was treated better by other females at school and ignored by males. She liked girls better as a result.

The whole state is full of nut jobs, the politicians and the people who vote them in,but it will come to an end soon because no one will be able to live there. The gov is a nut job from the 70s and the people voted him in again,if you didn’t learn from the first time I guess you will not learn. You have to ask yourself are you really living in happiness.

Iran is still giving the therapy. This law will be overturned by the Muslim brotherhood and Barack osama in his second term.
The B will be replaced with an S in his second term. Os(b)ama

In Iran, they dont give therapy to homosexuals, they kill them, publicly. In some areas a homosexual hanging is a community event. As far as determination of orientation, there has to be a correlation between genetics and environment. But, ultimately, acting upon impulses is a choice.

This is pure ignorance!! They don’t make gays straight…they help them deal with issues, and IF they want to try to manage those feelings and live as a straight person, they can have help.

So let’s just get rid of all therapy??

      Absolutely.
And many people I’ve known who *thought* they *might* be gay said it started in childhood
after incidents of molestation. IF they could have spoken with a therapist about those
worries as a child, it would have saved them tons of years of agony. One poor woman I know
had a miserable excuse of a mom who knew her husband was molesting her daughter.(2nd marriage)
As an adult, this daughter’s closest female friend was a very affectionate type of person &
she enjoyed the affection & attention so much & actually yearned for it. She became worried
she might be gay because it meant so much to her. (She didn’t think that was normal & couldn’t tell the difference between needing love & acceptance vs sexuality since hers was stolen from her at such an early age.)
Turns out she was yearning for a MOM…someone who would show her love and be on her side.
Thankfully she got therapy before this stupid law went into effect & has been happily married for 30+ yrs now.
