Melissa Harris Perry Argues Elizabeth Warren Is Native American Because She Grew Up Thinking She Was

MSNBC host Melissa Harris Perry jumped to defend Massachusetts Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren’s claims that she is part Cherokee Indian Saturday on her weekend show. Perry delivered a mini-diatribe on the relativity of race, with the conclusion that all one must do is “think” they are a certain ethnicity for it to be true.

Perry began her lecture by lamenting “in Massachusetts…you’ll see that the path of progress is sometimes a long and slow one.”   She compared the race to a famous scene in the Bruce Willis movie “The Sixth Sense” tritely noting that  ”some are saying, I see indigenous people” in reference to Warrens claims. After showing a picture of Warren, Perry asks “Is that what an American Indian is supposed to look like?” She continued, lecturing her audience, “Careful. The right answer is there is no answer.”

Perry then discussed her race relativism theory: “If candidate Warren grew up thinking she is Native American by heritage, who are we to say she is not? And who are we to define her based on narrow constructs of race.”

The quote is an odd one since Perry has regularly defined people and their motives by race, recently noting white America needed a “racial enemy” after the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001.

      So Melissa… what are you?? African.., African American… or American? or maybe something like a dark skinned something. This is the whole problem with this “Minority”/”Affirmative action” thing.

      Let’s see, My ancestry goes way back including European and French Canadian (which includes Native American heritage)… Does that make me a minority too? Under these guidelines, everyone is a minority to some extent. In the United States, other than Native Americans we are one of two… either American or those who are living in America. “Affirmative Action” or “Minority” Status, are just a slogan and/or tool used by some to benefit or divide some who are not Americans.

      My Native American/European background fought to make sure that all citizens were American, regardless of skin tone or **** color. If you are an American, strive to better yourself as such.

      When I was about 5 yrs old my mom told me a relative of ours married a Cherokee Indian woman (which he did) and I was so elated I got her Indian print blanket and wrapped it around me and stood out at the curb so everyone knew I was Indian. I did this for a few days and finally decided I wasn’t THAT much Indian after all. So, by just believing something, doesn’t make it the gospel truth.
      At least I know where my Cherokee Indian background came from, names & all, but it’s not enough
      to actually claim grants from schools to take away from lawful Indians. Shame on you Eliz. Warren

      @RANGER1965………..About the same time I thought I was an indian wrapped in my mom’s print blanket, I also thought I could float with an umbrella. Our neighbors had a really high front porch. Many steps up with a railing around the porch. I took my mom’s umbrella and climbed the steps and climbed up on the railing and jumped with my open umbrella. My knees were never the same.

      Our neighbors were Mr. & Mrs. Nahabedian. Funny, that I could remember their name from so many years ago. I think they were from Turkey, she taught my mom how to make something
      rolled in grape leaves. My mom made that dish for years, but used cabbage leaves later on.

    I think the reason for affirmative action-type programs is to try to make up for discrimination that limited opportunities of a particular race or gender, right? So, if you don’t look like a minority and your name doesn’t give you away (i.e. Gonzalez, Nez, Shaniqua), should you benefit from affirmative action programs? Whether they exist is a different topic, but given that they do exist, it seems “believing” you are a minority doesn’t cut it.

    I am tired of the entire hate whitey thing. We need to make it illegal to give money or special treas t to people based on the color of their skin. It should be illegal to have anything about race on a college application or a job application . The government should stay out of it. Rewards should be based on merit not on using your uterus as a slot machine. (stole that line from another Blazer)

    We have to be careful. Obama WANTS to divide us. We need to stand up against whatever the Marxists are trying to accomplish like class ware fare and racial tension.

      I am to, grandmother was Cherokee. i have the sharp cheekbones, nose, and slightly darker, I do get really dark during the summer if in the sun, but other than that I am your typical looking caucasian. I have never used that to get any benefits or promote myself. Guess some people aren’t comfortable in their own skin! Or, will just lie to get what they want!! Not sure which category Warren fits!!(Sarcasm meant!!)

      They are about as Conservative as I’m a fan of Ron Paul. I like a very small % of what Paul offers up …

      He’s got that broken clock likability when it comes to the economy… right twice a day… but that’s where the Conservatism ends with these amoral and socially inept “Thrifty Liberals.”

    LOL, I think that the leaders of today’s current Cherokee Nation will disagree. I grew up knowing that I was part Cherokee and have had several discussions with the chief of our local tribe who wants me to join. We both belong to some of the same veterans groups and he wants me to join the tribe. I’ve explained that I have grown up Caucasian, that is who I am. He did grow up much close to the Cherokees than me. We have a lot of respect for each other. But, respect for the tribe and the people certainly does not describe Warren or these newsie detractors.

      Actually, why is no one pointing that out? Liberals are so shallow when it comes to race. This statement should be considered an over-the-top insult to the entire Cherokee nation.

      Liberal: “Yes, Cherokee. Your race matters so little to us that all someone has to do to be part of your tribe is think that they are.”
      Cherokee: “Does the same apply to other races?”
      Liberal: “Depends on how that race votes or if they’re big enough for us to care about.”
