An Egyptian-born journalist who was arrested last week for defacing one of the controversial “anti-jihad” ads in New York City has appeared on MSNBC with Chris Hayes to explain her motivation.

After playing the clip of Mona Eltahawy attempting to vandalize the ad with spray paint as another woman dramatically positions herself in the line of fire, Hayes asks if they can just “talk tactics” to begin.

“There’s a great Internet phrase called ‘don’t feed the trolls’…when someone tries to basically get a rise out of you with idiocy, just don’t rise to the bait,” he began. “And it seems to me like this was like an exercise in feeding the trolls. So why did you decide to do this?”

Eltahawy responded:

Well, first of all because this ad is more than ‘idiocy.’ You know that [YouTube] film…that was idiocy…This is an ad that is seen by the millions of people who ride the subway– including myself– every day in New York. This is an ad that comes eleven years into Muslims and Arabs, because this isn’t just about Islam here– there is racism and bigotry involved– eleven years after 9/11, a horrendous terrorist attack that no Muslim I know has ever condoned. And eleven years after the Muslim and Arab citizens of New York…[are] constantly being called on to apologize over and over again for something we didn’t do.

And again, this is an ad that conflates being Arab and Muslim, with being against Israel and being with jihad. This choice is a false choice, so it’s more than idiocy. [Emphasis added]

Hayes then proceeds to press Eltahawy, asking what exactly she was trying to prove by vandalizing the advertisement.

Eltahawy responds that, as a U.S. citizen, she is proud to take part in America’s long tradition of civil disobedience against what she perceives to be injustice propagated by people like Pamela Geller. She boldly adds that she refuses to be silenced “in the face of racism and hate.”

“How is she silencing you by putting an ad on a [subway]?” one panelist can’t help but ask the passionate journalist.

As Hayes and the rest of the panel note that, as a guest on MSNBC, Eltahawy is far from “silenced,” the journalist revised her statement to say that she refuses to be “bullied.”

“Two hours before I did what I did, I saw a man on 49th St….actually rip a poster,” she remarks. “I did not want to rip that poster. You know what I wanted to do? I wanted to write ‘racist’ in pink.”

“I chose pink for many reasons, one of which is it does not actually remove the words. I did not want to remove the words– I could have chosen black.”

  Have you ever ran for a train inthe subway and stopped for a long-time to read the adds on the walls? I used-to be a kid, taking the buss+subway in Chi-town/1950′s to get to school every day for 12years! I never even knew there were adds on the walls….I was on my way to/from school….FOOL!! I was too busy re-remembering my last classes, so I could “get” the new-knowledge-added of the new day. I was too busy making sure I got on the right train+dirrection, to get-off at the right stop and catch the right buss…etc…etc… .

So Mona Eltahawy was born in Egypt, hmm. More than 90% of women there have had undergone genital mutilation, as this article explains.

Very likely she has had this as well and could explain her anger problem. They seem to hate the wrong people, not those that did such a horror, but instead those who are “haraam” — dirty– in other words intact women. Muslims in general don’t seem to be a happy sort unless they just finished killing someone or something. I read of a French (Gaulish) woman who was visiting a remote Egyptian village and was set upon and forced to undergo such a genital mutilation and she died from the ordeal.

  She’s an Arab…an Egyptian Arab at that……anything that has Israel in the mix automatically invokes a hatred towards Jews in general …her reaction to this poster is just that an ingrained bigotry likely drilled into her since childhood by her parents,relatives, fellow countrymen in Egypt. Nothing unites the Arab nations like the state of Israel and that of it’s citizenary. The propaganda machines un these Arab states have been brainwashing minds for decades….it’s hard to reverse that culutral damage. Anti Israeli/Jewish fanaticism is alive and thriving in the Arab world. She objects to the simple truth of that reality and by extension the message relyed in the poster (which has nothing rascist nor anything to do with 9/11 on the way of a direct link). It simply states that Ilsam, the knid sweeping Arab States today harkens back to time where savagry and conquest were part and parcel of dcotrine. Merely pointing that truth out today should not be the reason for killing the messenger. She should be ashamed of herself is she is able to truly evaluate her own reaction and actions.
