Study Finds Republican Female Lawmakers Look More Feminine Than Democrats

UCLA Study Finds Female Conservative House Representatives Have More Feminine Features Than Liberal Counterparts

Last year, Newsweek magazine was criticized for its photo choice featuring Michele Bachmann on its cover. In the 2008 presidential election season, the looks of Sarah Palin and Hillary Rodham Clinton had a media presence as well.

Now, a report from the University of California-Los Angeles has taken a look at female politicians from both parties to judge their femininity and how it could be linked to pre-judgments about them made by voters.

What the research found was that Republican women were more likely to have what would be considered feminine facial features, whereas Democratic women “strayed from stereotypical gender norms,” as the UCLA press release described it. The researchers found that students, who were not informed as to the voting records of female politicians, when shown portraits, identified those with more feminine faces accurately as conservatives.

“I suppose we could call it the ‘Michele Bachmann effect,’” Kerri Johnson, a senior author for the study and assistant professor of communication studies and psychology, said in a statement. ”At least when it comes to female politicians, assessing how much a face reflects gender norms may be one way of guessing political affiliations.”

Bachmann was among the female Republican politicians included in the study to rank as highly feminine. Representatives Kay Granger (Texas–District 12) and Cathy Rodgers McMorris (Washington–District 5) also were reported as some of the most feminine looking.

To conduct the study, the researchers used members from the House of Representatives and software to quantify how much the portrait of each member matched the “average” for each gender:

The model compared each representative’s face to the norm on more than 100 subtle dimensions, including the shape of the jaw, the location of eyebrows, the placement of cheek bones, the shape of eyes, the contour of the forehead, the fullness of the lips and the distance between such features as the bottom of the nose and the top of the lip. Armed with these dimensions, the researchers were able to arrive at an amalgamated score assessing the extent to which the face exhibited characteristics common to men or to women.

This was then compared to the politicians’ DW-NOMINATE score, which the press release states is a scale using voting records to establish how conservative or liberal a politician is.

The conservative female politicians were found twice as likely to be “sex-typical” than liberal female politicians.

To further confirm the correlation between looks and political affiliation, the researchers surveyed 120 undergraduates with portraits of all members of the House. If a more liberal politician had a gender-typical face, students were more likely to guess her political affiliation incorrectly.

While looking more feminine and holding a more conservative voting record seemed to hold up for female politicians, this was not the case for male members of the House. Looking more masculine, did not have a strong correlation with political affiliation. Research did find that, on average, male Republicans scored as less masculine in appearance according to the software.

“It may be unnecessary for Republican men to exhibit masculinity through their appearance,” graduate student and lead author Colleen Carpinella said in a university statement. “Their policy advocacy and leadership roles may already confer these characteristics on them.”

Johnson said that she thinks the reason there is such a difference in look of liberal and conservative female Representatives is due to the Democratic Party looking to diminish gender disparity with policies and the Republican Party supporting policies with that “tend to bolster traditional sex roles.”

“These policy platforms are manifest in each party’s image — apparently also in the physical characteristics exhibited by politicians,” Johnson said. ”We suspect that conservative constituents demand that their politicians be not just competent but also gender-typical, especially among women. As a result, we think these women may find themselves in a double bind.”

These findings will be published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology.

If you look at most lib women (Hillary, Pelosi, Feinstein, Boxer…), they just have a nasty, mean, ugly look. JMO, bit I believe it comes from their undying desire to promote the killing of babies. It goes completely against the God given nature that a woman is supposed to care for a baby. I believe this has an effect on their face, and just turns them ugly;.

  I don’t think being pro-choice means that they want to kill babies. I think that women should have the freedom to choose on these matters even though I would prefer it if they had the baby and gave it up for adoption rather than having the abortion.
  Most of the people on this site seem to be so isolated and wrapped up in your anger and hatred. It’s pretty disheartening. Can’t you just have a reasoned debate rather than making stupid comments like this?

  I believe we have a legit argument going on here. When you look at the heavy hitters (that are female) on the left, they have one thing in common. They look mean, and nasty. Hillary looks like a scab on a dog’s but, Pelosi about like a baboon that just drank vinegar, and Feinstein looks like she was chassing parked cars.
  
  I believe that thy look nasty because they are nasty. They do have a serious connection with abortion, and abortion is all about killing unborn babies. I think there could be a connection.

  OK I understand that we disagree with their viewpoint on abortion, but what relevance do their looks have to do with that? Debate and criticise them for their ideas, not their faces. It makes you look juvenile and stops people taking you seriously.
  As a fairly left-wing guy who’s come here to better understand other people’s opinions, I think it’s better to have a proper reasoned debate about issues rather than just getting into insult-based shouting matches on the internet. Left-wingers don’t want to mess up the world, neither do conservatives. We just have different opinions on how to make the world a better place. I am not evil and neither are you. Nancy Pelosi is not evil, and neither is Sarah Palin. First and foremost, Barack Obama is not evil and neither is Mitt Romney.

  The perfect article for TheBlaze, shallow and yet offering red meat. Although it is hard to argue with the conclusion one has to wonder why it matters. I could care less what my elected reps look like, I want brains. And as for those on tv, I prefer to listen on satellite radio and so I have no clue what these people look like.
  
  If repubs want bragging rights over women that is fine, but remember the most republic state I know of is Utah and it has the highest number of plastic surgeons per capita and the most breast augmentation of any state. You may not like what you see and feel when the makeup comes off.

  I know of women that are conservative, Christian, good caring people that are well beyond sixty who just have a pleasant, pretty look. I believe their beauty is from within, and reflects in their face.

  I think you’re right on Ranger – Im 72 years old (and yes, I KNOW that fact alone does NOT make me smart) and it has been my observation for decades that women who are beautiful inside, invariably become that way outside. I know for a fact that unhappy and just plain mean and evil people (not to mention other types) so very often become more and more “un-beautiful” (PC thing here!) as time goes by. We need to look no further than Ms. HIllary Rodham (Clinton?) for proof. Happiness breeds character and character is easy to spot – but then, so is evil.

What do you think women are choosing? I’ll tell you…TO KILL BABIES!!! Should we also have the right to kill our 2 and 5 and 10 year old children because we think they are or will become a burden to us? Just because something is growing inside of someone does not mean that that is a part of their own body. I think women should be able to chose to get a hysterectomy or be abstinent not to kill an unborn child. I agree with this whole- heartedly.
Republican women are definitely more feminine- looking.
However- Liberals are more likely to go to the gynecologist and less likely to smell like sardines.

One look at http://delauro.house.gov/ will confirm that. Liberal women are just **** ugly. Thank God the most liberal ones rarely pass their genes on. Funny thing is, Liberal women fight harder than anyone for free birth control and abortions, yet they’re the least likely to ever need them.

One of the differences is that Democrat women don’t have what I would consider feminine hairstyles.
Clip-haired boy-cuts or dirty-stringy is just not feminine and I just love feminine women.

  No, it has nothing to do with hairstyle. Most progs support the Dem crooks because they promise to “level the playing field” so equal treatment is codified by law.
