This Is Where Obama & Romney Stand on Abortion and Birth Control (And Why it Matters)
(TheBlaze/AP) — The issue of whether women have access to abortion services and birth control is a longstanding and divisive fixture in American politics. Furor over both abortion and contraception has flared up from time to time in this campaign, despite the candidates’ reticence to dwell on such hot-button topics.
—
Where the presidential candidates stand:
President Barack Obama supports abortion rights. His health care law requires contraceptives to be available for free for women enrolled in workplace health plans — a controversial measure that has put him at odds with religious groups, particularly the Catholic Church.

Republican Mitt Romney opposes abortion rights, though he previously supported them. He says Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court ruling establishing abortion rights, should be reversed, which would allow states to ban abortion. He would end federal aid to Planned Parenthood, a major provider of abortion and contraception, and has criticized mandatory coverage for contraception as a threat to religious liberty when it’s applied to employers, such as Catholic hospitals, that disagree.
—
Why it matters:
There’s been a lot of heated talk this year by Democrats contending that Republicans are waging a “war on women.” That’s hyperbole, retorts the GOP, but there are indeed stark differences between the two parties over these volatile issues.
Obama’s Affordable Care Act, which Republicans opposed and want to repeal, vastly expands women’s access to copay-free preventive health care, including contraception.
The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and many conservative Protestant evangelicals have denounced this contraception mandate, saying it violates religious freedom. The provision generally exempts houses of worship, but faith-affiliated employers would have to comply.
Obama’s campaign has been running ads aimed at female voters, noting that Romney supports overturning Roe v. Wade and has assailed the contraception coverage requirement as a “war on religion.”

Were Romney to be elected, his ability to push through tough federal abortion restrictions would probably be limited unless Republicans gained firm control of both chambers of Congress.
However, the next president — Obama or Romney — could have huge influence over the future of abortion policy if vacancies arise on the Supreme Court. For example, if two seats held by liberal justices were vacated and filled by Romney-nominated conservatives, prospects for a reversal of Roe v. Wade would increase.
“That’s bigger than everything else combined, because of the long-term consequences,” said anti-abortion activist Charmaine Yoest, president of Americans United for Life.
Another issue of contention is the federally financed family planning program known as Title X. Romney has proposed ending the program, as well as all other federal money for Planned Parenthood. Obama supporters say this could be harmful to the large numbers of women who rely on Planned Parenthood clinics for affordable birth control, breast-cancer screenings and other services.

Aside from the presidential and congressional elections, there’s a lot riding on the results of state-level elections. Anti-abortion activists hope for further gains to accelerate a dramatic trend of the past decade: the enactment of scores of laws restricting access to abortion in states with Republican-controlled legislatures.
Among these measures are laws in several states prohibiting abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy, on the contended grounds that fetuses can feel pain at that stage; and a South Dakota law requiring doctors to warn women seeking abortions that they face increased risk of suicide by undergoing the procedure. In Mississippi, the lone abortion clinic is threatened with closure because of a new law requiring abortion providers to have hospital admitting privileges.
The coming election carries the potential to change these dynamics profoundly.

As for rape pregnancy cases – less than 1% of rape victims become pregnant as a result (30 or so cases a year). Who is guilty? The rapist or the child? If some one is going to die, let it be the rapist.

Posted on October 1, 2012 at 10:10amFor those of you who have never read the Bible the Ten Commandments are listed in Exodus 20:3-17 and Deuteronomy 5:7-21. In both references one of the commandments is “you shall not murder” and abortion is MURDER. In Psalm 139 King David speaks of God knowing you before you were born and in all eternity. We were not created for someone to snuff out before we were born. Life is a right, not a choice. Roe vs Wade should be overturned. It should not have been allowed in the first place. On a National level or a State level, abortion should not be allowed. For all of you reading this post, you can thank your mother for not choosing abortion!

Posted on October 1, 2012 at 10:00amIt’s funny how conservatives believe all life is sacred from the point of conception until birth. Then after that they’re on your own. That is until they reach military age, then they’re just fine. Conservatives want live babies so they can be dead soldiers. And they better not become a doctor because then you might have to kill them. This whole sanctity of life crap is just manmade BS designed to make them feel noble about themself. Who said life is sacred? God? If you read history, you realize that God is one of the leading causes of death. He has been for 2000 years. Hindus, Muslims, Jews, Christians all taking turns killing each other because God told them it was a good idea. The sword of God, the blood of the lamb, vengeance is mine. Millions of people died because they gave the wrong answer to the God question. Do you believe in God? No your dead. Next do you believe in God? Yes. Do you believe in my God? No your dead. I don’t know which is worse your hypocrisy or your religion

I don’t know any conservatives who “want live babies so they can be dead soldiers”. And I have never met anyone who would want to kill someone for being a doctor. What are you talking about man?
Life is sacred even from a humanist point of view, seeing that without life, there would be no one to contemplate these questions to begin with. Sure, life brings with it sorrow and suffering, but it also brings with it joy and happiness. I exist, and it is quite evident to me that others exist as well, and moments of happiness, triumph, and meaning exist despite one’s lot in life, whether one is born of privilege or poverty. The possibility of life, and the birth of new personalities who can all pursue liberty and happiness is sacred. Without life, we are not. The child in the womb is an individual human life who has a right to enter this sphere and fulfill the measure of his own existence.

Islamist are killing Christians and everyone else that doesn’t agree with them. You don’t see Christians rioting, burning flags, killing Ambassadors because of anti-Jesus films, or even the killing of Christians. You don’t have Christians demanding a law that prohits the defamation of Jesus. Because we believe in a pro-life agenda, we are now the bad guys? Really??? God doesn’t cause people to kill each other, people do that on their own skewed mentality. I think he has a commandment that says “thou shall not kill”. What Christian likes war and wants young men and women to be killed in war? Your logic is missing a few screws.

Posted on October 1, 2012 at 11:53amNo, we don’t believe they are “on their own” once they are born. We believe it is the responsibility of PARENTS to teach their children to one day become productive citizens who do not spend the rest of their adult lives dependent upon others for basic necessities. Here is some of what conservative children are taught;
Hearts pump blood, they do not process information or make good decisions
Examine and learn from your mistakes otherwise they have a way of expanding beyond their original borders
Create dignity in life, not dependency
Respect is earned, not given
You accept responsibility for the consequences of your actions at the time you decide to exercise the action, see #1.
Garbage man or Physician, do the most with what you have to work with.
It takes a parent to raise a child, not the village council.
In life, everyone doesn’t get a trophy just for participating
.
No one can make you feel inadequate without your consent
Common sense ensures you will never go hungry, integrity is the method to apply it legally, education, is the way to make sure everyone knows you at least contemplated the existence of the first two.
Works not words define for others who you are.
Failure is one result of risk, success is another, you decide which result gets the final say in your life

I will not trust Romney. He is among criminals in the way they handled the primary with the violation of federal law. I will not vote for him and no self respecting liberty minded voter will either. He cannot win without the votes he and the RNC through away. Now Glenn, Rush and Levin are trying to beg and plead for Paul supporters to vote for Romney, but it is falling on deaf ears. If you want to see, go to the Daily Paul and read the posts and you will see. We are voting for Gary Johnson, Virgil Goode or writing in Pauls name. We are not the only ones doing this, there are many other Tea Party voters doing the same, so Mitt will not have the numbers to defeat Obama and it is reflected in the polls: http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2012/president/2012_elections_electoral_college_map.html
It is in these toss up states that Paul supporters are going to finish him, scroll down to the polls in them. The map shows that before these states Obama is at 165 needing only 5 electoral votes to win. How will Romney conquer that? The only way to change our country’s direction is to send a clear message to both parties and vote third party. I wish more would join to send this message, otherwise, socialism either way with Dems and Repubs.

The only people that I have observed that do not respect life are “Progressives”…..and Jihadists. Is your life so miserable and you hate yourself so much that you assume everyone feels this way. Yes your bitterness shines through. You also need to take some Biblical courses if you are going to make judgements on it. The people in the old testamant were so evil they would have destroyed the world and God was not going to allow it to happen, this is why He ordered so many deaths, Christ had not been born, so there was no redemption available, they had to be destroyed.Future life is sacred also and so given a choice, God is going to choose that life continue.

Posted on October 1, 2012 at 11:21amThe Romney who has always been pro-life. In case you didn’t know, Romney is a Mormon, and has served in various leadership capacities throughout his life that would require him to not only be familiar with Church policy, but as agree with it. The Church’s longstanding policy on abortion remains the following:
“The Church opposes abortion and counsels its members not to submit to or perform an abortion except in the rare cases where, in the opinion of competent medical counsel, the life or good health of the mother is seriously endangered or where the pregnancy was caused by rape and produces serious emotional trauma in the mother. Even then it should be done only after counseling with the local presiding priesthood authority and after receiving divine confirmation through prayer.” (http://www.lds.org/new-era/1973/04/policies-and-procedures-statement-on-abortion)
His “pro-choice” position on public policy matters must have another explanation. We don’t have dictators in this country, and sometimes a leader must govern even when there is a majority who wish something he himself believes to be wrong. Latter-day saints also believe in not drinking alcohol, but I don’t know many who would attempt to force that standard on others. That said, Romney is a “convert” in the truest sense, on issue abortion and public policy, after realizing where “harsh logic” on abortion leads. (see http://evangelicalsformitt.org/on-the-issues/)

Posted on October 1, 2012 at 10:50pmI believe that we try to make this black and white…and very little in life is. I am Pro Life…I believe that life begins at conseption and abortion is murder. That is my black and white answer.
However I believe that there are times – rape – harm to the mother- that abortion should be allowed and even if we say it is illegal that some people are still going to do it…so I want them to have it done in a safe way so that one mistake does not cause another end of life.
So I guess I am pro choice – Because an choice of an abortion is between that woman and her God and my job is not to judge – but use my tax money for it and then it becomes between God- that Woman and me and I am back to pro life.
I guess all in all I am pro choice but made that choice the least option used. Promote adoption and if the decision is abortion make it safe but do not use my dollars to do it.
Peope change their opinions based on their experiances in life. I personaly want someone who is willing to change…someone who can learn from experiances or learn from mistakes.
We have a lot facing us right now….I am not sure if abortion is the topic that needs the most discussion from either of them.

Posted on October 1, 2012 at 8:37amThe abortion issue:
Obama supports murdering innocent life so liberal women and men can enjoy more unprotected sex at our expense.
Romney supports the US Constitution which protects Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness. He is also on the side of God. Abortion is murder, it’s as simple as that.
Seems pretty clear to me.

It’s a stretch but, i see you working Mav so, i’ll go with it….
Current legal precedent has: life occurring at birth, so the liberty references the host (mother) and her property (fetus)
If you want to change this, 1st you have to change the legal interpretation of person-hood.

Posted on October 1, 2012 at 8:27amThe only part of this issue that’s relevant is whether or not the gov. is going to pay for abortions.
Romney is in no hurry to reverse Roe v Wade. It’s lip- service for the base.
I’m voting for Romney because he stands the best chance of getting the economy back on firm footing. If he wins and gets side- tracked with the social baloney i’m going to be pissed.

Posted on October 1, 2012 at 8:58amIt’s hard for me to know if you’re serious, or on the other side looking to suppress the vote with that ‘base’ reference. If so, you’re good. Of course he’d like to reverse Roe, best through the courts, because that would kick the issue back to the states. Then we’d end up with a collage of states voting for (NY, CA, WA) and against (UT, ID, PA). Abortion would remain available nearby but state politicians would have to begin looking over their shoulders at those Life voters protesting at the state capitol, which up to this point they have been able to ignore because of Roe.

Posted on October 1, 2012 at 9:36amI’m dead serious. The only part of this issue that has any realistic flexibility is whether or not taxes will fund abortions.
My and your views on the morality of abortion are effectively irrelevant.
There are deeper complications to reversing Roe v Wade that make it an issue the Supreme Court would be reluctant to pursue…..
ie: granting person-hood to fetuses would open the door to miles of big brother legislation aimed at pregnant women and the way they treat their bodies during pregnancy… the food they eat, the exercise they get, their psycho-stability, etc.

Posted on October 1, 2012 at 8:24amWow, it’s sad the culture of death we’ve entered into as a nation. Millions of unborn babies are lost every year to abortion. These are developing humans with heartbeats, fingers, toes and souls. I encourage everyone to check out http://www.ehd.org/ and learn more about developing humans. It’s very fascinating!
Women have been tricked into believing that freedom comes from a Pill and freedom comes from terminating inconvenient pregnancies. Women are less respected and more objectified for their sexuality now more than ever. Freedom does not come from Yaz and it does not come from Planned Parenthood. Freedom does not come from chemically suppressing your fertility and sleeping around. These are lies, and I hope more women are waking up to the truth that they are beautiful and strong, and can control their lives by making healthy relationship decisions without drugs, promiscuity, and dating loser men that have no intention of making real commitments to them.

Posted on October 1, 2012 at 8:00amThe Pro Life movement needs to fight the abortion battle one state at a time, more of a unconventional warfare approach. This is what the progressives did with gay rights and they have won or gained a lot of ground.
The one thing at the national level right now should be no federal money for abortions. You want one pay you pay for it.
I am Pro Lufe but this divides the GOP and Independents these days which is what the progressives want.

A woman’s decision on abortion is between her ,her doctor & whatever she calls her spiritual adviser. She may choose to include the father/sperm donor and her family.
In the financing of this operation, the government HAS NO BUSINESS providing any money whatsoever.
The primary problem with medicine currently IS government meddling .

Posted on October 1, 2012 at 3:34pmNHWINTER. Thou shall not murder is the correct translation. It would be tough to soldiers if killing was banned. Here’s something though, where in the Bible does it say NOT to abort? The Old Testament has Jews totally destroying their enemies, including women and children, animals even buildings. “Happy shall he be who takes your little ones and dashes them against
the rock!” (Psalms 137:9)
“The people of Samaria must bear their guilt, because they have rebelled
against their God. They will fall by the sword; their little ones will be
dashed to the ground, their pregnant women ripped open.” (Hosea 13:16)
“Every one that is found shall be thrust through; and every one that is
joined unto them shall fall by the sword.
Their children also shall be dashed to pieces before their eyes; their
houses shall be spoiled, and their wives ravished.” (Isaiah 13:15,16)
“Their bows also shall dash the young men to pieces; and they
shall have no pity on the fruit of the womb; their eye shall not spare
children.” (Isaiah 13:18)ldings.

Posted on October 2, 2012 at 11:15amYou need to remember not all conservatives are catholics. Not all are even religious.I don’t follow a organized religion for one simple reason it all boils down to this. The religion states you must do it the way our human interpreter states it should be.Be fill in the blank or wind up in hell.Sorry but I think the creator is far more competent than that.
Another reason is this the three major religions and their books are in fact the first warfare play books.

Posted on October 1, 2012 at 7:55amI guess it is good to know where he stands, this is a tough topic,I believe life is a choice,I also believe that if doctor can live with himself, and the patient has saw the life in her body and still choices to snuff out that life that is between her and her marker….
I wish people where more responsible with their bodies ,but I wish a lot of things, this should be decided by the states and the people that live there.
I’m very uncomfortable with this being a deciding factor,I’m glad he is standing,if this is part of his platform he better sell it because you are or you aren’t.
Praying for Mitt, know what you believe why you believe it stand in the truth and let the chips fall where they may. Please listen to your gut not your handlers. The truth is what we want,we are starving to believe in something real.

Posted on October 1, 2012 at 8:08amVerceofreason – We are for freedom. The freedom to live. So, some say a woman has the right to do whatever with “her” own body. Well, the fetus has its own body, a separate heart from the mother, it could even be a different sex than the mother. It is a separate human being. Do what you want with your own body, but that separate body is not your body.

Posted on October 1, 2012 at 11:06amDUBLINTHEWAGONS, We should not have to pay for murder because people lack discipline and self-control. The Forefathers were wiser than most people realize. Note the order: Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. I assert that the first, Life, trumps the other two, and that Liberty, trumps the pursuit of happiness. Your happiness should not end another person’s Life, or infringe upon their Liberty. Your Liberty should not should not infringe end another’s life. There is one exception to the latter. If the servants of the people become tyrants, we have the right, as written in the 2nd amendment, to rise up against the servants and restore our government to the structure. When they wrote our constitution, they took into consideration God and and inalienable rights; they took into consideration our flawed human nature and realized, regardless of education, knowledge, or technology, that human nature IS THE VERY REASON HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF. Re-read your constitution and the warnings to guard against apathy with that in mind.

Posted on October 1, 2012 at 2:13pmVOICEOF…..REASON?, I have two questions. Does your philosophy determine your morality, or does your morality determine your philosophy? Secondly, on what is your morality based? The answer to that, sadly enough for many, is the real question upon which true wisdom and happiness pivots. Without the correct answer you and so many others are awash in a hopeless sea of ….. whatever you think life is about. Brotherwil is on the right track.
