U.S. Quickly Approaching Massive Tax Increase With Year-End ‘Fiscal Cliff’

WASHINGTON (TheBlaze/AP) — A typical middle-income family making $40,000 to $64,000 a year could see its taxes go up by $2,000 next year if lawmakers fail to renew a lengthy roster of tax cuts set to expire at the end of the year, according to a new report Monday

Taxpayers across the income spectrum would be hit with large tax hikes, the Tax Policy Center said in its study, with households in the top 1 percent income range seeing an average tax increase of more than $120,000, while a family making between $110,000 to $140,000 could see a tax hike in the $6,000 range.

All told, the government would reap more than $500 billion in new revenue if a full menu of tax cuts were allowed to expire. The expiring provisions include Bush-era cuts on wage and investment income and cuts for married couples and families with children, among others. Also expiring is a 2 percentage point temporary payroll tax cut championed by President Barack Obama.

“It’s just a huge, huge number,” said Eric Toder, one of the authors of the study.

Economists warn that the looming tax hikes, combined with $109 billion in automatic spending cuts scheduled to take effect in January, could throw the fragile economy back into (or deeper, depending on how you read the data) recession if Washington doesn’t act. The automatic spending cuts are coming due because of the failure of last year’s deficit “supercommittee” to strike a bargain. The combination of the sharp tax hikes and spending cuts has been dubbed a “fiscal cliff.”

“The fiscal cliff threatens an unprecedented tax increase at year end,” says the report. “Taxes would rise by more than $500 billion in 2013 — an average of almost $3,500 per household — as almost every tax cuts enacted since 2001 would expire.”

Tax Policy Centers Warns of Massive tax Increases With Year End Fiscal Cliff

Members of the Joint Select Committee (i.e. the "supercommittee") on Deficit Reduction hold a public hearing on Capitol Hill in Washington on October 26, 2011 (AP)

Cumulatively, the country would see a 5 percentage point jump in its average tax rate, which works out to taxes on the top 1 percent jumping by more than 7 percentage points and about 4 percentage points for most people earning below $100,000 a year.

Put another way, people in the $40,000-$64,000 income range would see their average federal tax rate jump from 14 percent to 17.8 percent — or an increase in their overall federal bill of 27 percent.

All told, almost 90 percent of all households would face a tax increase, though the top 20 percent of earners would bear 60 percent of the overall cost.

President Obama has called for those earning over $250,000 to return to Clinton-era rates of as much as 39.6 percent while Republicans have called for an extension of the Bush-era tax cuts for all income levels.

But all sides are supportive of renewing the Bush-era tax rates for everyone below the $250,000 mark. Without a renewal of those rates, a married couple would pay a 28 percent rate on taxable income exceeding $72,300 instead of the 25 percent rate they now pay. And the 10 percent rate paid on the first $8,900 of income would jump to 15 percent.

The new top rate of 39.6 percent would kick in for income over $397,000. The current top rate is 35 percent rate.

OH GOD–SO draconian! It’s ONLY among the lowest tax rate in that bracket in U.S. HISTORY–certainly since the END OF WWII.

Try…just try to use your brain. Do you know what tax rates would have to be to balance the budget? The “rich” (ha) those making over 200K…would have to pay a 100% tax rate. But that doesn’t balance the budget either. Those making between 50K and 200K would have to pay 50%. Then you’d balance the budget (only in theory).

Your B.S. class warfare schtick is just that. There isn’t a shred of economic sense driving any part of that. It is political cotton candy. Tastes good to the statist totalitarians but has no real substance of any kind.

When the votes are counted, both of you and approximately 17 other people in the United States who vote for Johnson or Paul will be happy to know you voted with your heart. It won’t make a $hit’s worth of difference, but at least you will have that warm fuzzy feeling inside knowing you made a statement. Unfortunately, that statement will be: “I was too stupid to vote in the real world.”

      therealconservative desperate lies EXPOSED…

      “Open boarders”
Ron Paul’s platform is NO amnesty, NO Romney/Rubio Dream Act, NO welfare magnet, NO “birthright citizenship” (a twisting of the 14th) and bringing our forces home from OTHER BORDERS… to protect our own.

      “Legalized drugs”
Ron Paul understand that the “War on Drugs” is (ironically) ILLEGAL and devastating to our liberties. He suggests, under the 10th Amendment, that we RETURN this issue to the States – a pov, btw, shared by leftist Paul Ryan. I’ve yet to hear the argument “Ryan wants heroin for all.”

      “Earmarks for all”
While Ron Paul relays HIS CONSTITUENTS REQUESTS (his job as their representative), he NEITHER SUPPORTS NOR VOTES FOR ANY PORK.

      “Appeasement”
Ron Paul has patiently explained the INEVITABLE RESULTS of our ISOLATIONIST foreign policy of welfare, warfare, propping up and tearing down. Although… explanation is hardly needed, as America is swimming in the blood of her own children that our leadership has positioned as World Police – IN VIOLATION OF THE CONSTITUTION.

      “Gutting the military”
Fabulous. We are BANKRUPT and CANNOT AFFORD our INTERVENTIONIST, GLOBAL “military.” “Military,” of course, DOES NOT MEAN NATIONAL DEFENSE. Fake-conservatives often DECEPTIVELY mix the two.

“A return to the Articles of Confederation, which our founders did away with.”
Ron Paul seeks a return to the CONSTITUTION and Bill of Rights.

Launched nukes (of course I didn’t read about a thermal nuclear war in the 80′s) and had some super secret clearance that gave him the “need to know” for everything. Then he was the James Bond in the intelligence community and knows everything about everything. In other words, you’re not talking with the sharpest knife in the drawer. He isn’t even close to being rational. Just a half-wit that is either embellishing or lying. He’s been posting lies about RP since January and has never listened to anyone that has explained these positions yet.

      “Legalized drugs”

Paul Ryan was speaking our Medical Marijuana, not herion and coke like RP.

      “Earmarks for all”

Not authorized in the Constitution. “NEITHER SUPPORTS NOR VOTES FOR ANY PORK.” Tthat’s becauce he ALWAYS attaches the pork to a bill he knows will pass, then votes against it.

      “Appeasement”
Ron Paul believes in cowering to our enemies

      “Gutting the military”
The Military is our NATIONAL DEFENSE, check the Constitution. Liberals like you often DECEPTIVELY mix the two.

      Great posts, BWS!

But WE never HAD this chance of Ron Paul. He was sandbagged by the Republican establishment when they “coronated” Mitt Romney.

So, what do we do now?
With the brain-dead or ignoramus auto-lever-puller-voters of the Repubs & Dems party faithful, Paul doesn’t stand a chance (it breaks my heart to say). If the muslim-psychopath Obama wins, there will be a bloody civil war. If religious-mormon Romney wins, there may be time to make corrections in the Congress, which is now overrun with communists and have done NOTHING to stop Obama in his lawless tracks, to avoid the otherwise inevitable civil war. I don’t like ANY of these choices, but I like some even less than others.

I’m leaning towards sitting this one out, but if I think there’s enough folks to get that 5% or whatever needed to get funding for the next cycle I’ll probably vote Johnson for 2016. Of course my cynicism is telling me that even if he did get 5% they’d change the rules to preserve the two party system after what I seen at the convention.

Since the RNC silenced any chance of future grass roots activism working to bring any real Statesman to the convention, I am now in the process of choosing someone else to vote for. I commented on another story awhile back that I would not vote for Gary Johnson because of his open borders view. I then started looking into Virgil Goode. I like what Goode has to say, but He voted for the Patriot Act. I know of no one who can fill the shoes of Ron Paul. No one.
I am just about ready to say “turn off the lights and go home Louise”. No one truly wants a Constitutionally constrained government. No one wants to truly save the Republic.
IIMHO, the best government is the least government. At this juncture, I would vote for a Benevolent King over treasonous, Communist Obama and Corporatist Romney.

Rothbard’s a Goode man, and I respect his opinions too especially when it comes to the economy. I really just feel like sitting this one out, but I don’t know. JAdams, There’s some that argue that by voting at all, especially for the lesser of two evils, is validating their rule over us. Lew Rockwell is one. My other thought is if enough folks vote Johnson, (5%) we can really establish a third party for 2016 because they’ll get the 35 million dollar federal funding the other two parties get. I haven’t researched this to know if it’s true. I’d prefer the Constitutionalist ticket, but Louise pointed out Goode voted for the Patriot Act which really ticks me off and I think Johnson is getting more support to make that a reality. I just don’t know.

Goode reminds me of Bob Barr with his bad voting record. How can we vote for a guy that did not take a stand when he had a chance – that is not the spirit of Ron Paul. Perhaps my only objection to Goode is that he is against free trade (can anyone verify that).

Gary Johnson has his faults. The whole immigration thing is a little murky but the truth is that we need more legal immigration. Gary Johnson also is more aggressive on foreign policy than any of us would like.

Even still, voting for Goode and Johnson sends a message to both parties that they do not control us and the more people join us, the less power the R/D’s have. This is almost as much about a protest vote and progressive resistance as anything else. The shame of it all is that a write-in vote for Ron Paul will be the least effective

In this article we read that the govt will pull down FIVE HUNDRED BILLION. Okay, compared to QE3′s NINETY BILLION A MONTH in worthless paper, that’s what – FIVE months’ of “money”? LOL… so sad… and we are so doomed. So vote Romney – at least it’ll buy a LITTLE time – probably not – but Romney at least will not do what the other will do. We won’t have NATO/UN troops on our streets (until quickly shot to bits…yeah…) and Romney’d deploy the Guard but not elements of our military. I doubt that Romney would order the filling of those EVACUEE camps (FEMA) that do not exist. Remeber, Glenn Beck was called insane for claiming they did. Hey – the FED themselves now say they exist… OOPS. Screw the paper money – spend all you can while you can on REAL stuff. Start with even a .22 rifle and a bucket of ammo for it. I am so sick of hearing about how some people do not pay their fair share. Let me tell the bozos in DC- If my taxes go up, I will cut my spending on clothes, gas, entertainment, personal care products, etc, etc. more than I already have. If the only jobs most people can get today are low income service jobs, they had best be prepared to kiss those jobs goodbye too. People have to have money to purchase these things.

Those in Washington are crying the sky is falling over 109 billion in spending cuts. They spend over THREE TRILLION a year and 109 billion is going to throw the economy into a tail spin???!!! They cry that the military is going to fall to pieces when year over year we spend more and more. Romney wants to increase war spending???

All the while the post office missed a second 5 billion payment to their mandatory pension plan and they can not even close a few offices. Hey and we must also remember to thank Bernanke and Co when commodity prices skyrocket because of QE3 and we have to pay more for all goods and services.

The only thing that makes any sense to me anymore is that people at every level of government are either so absolutely stupid or they are purposefully trying to bring down our country. That goes for the Republicans too.

I like the answer that the dems offered a solution and it was to raise taxes ,that isn’t a solution its giving the junkie another fix ,they need to start cutting out the fat and waste and stop with the pork process
if there isn’t enough money to pay the bills why is it we keep handing out money on some of the biggest bull crap things in this country that our reps should hang their heads in shame for even asking for.And one other thing Barry and his posse will soon start with the money for infrastructure and putting people to work ,he says that all the time and means none of it,so much money has been sucked from all the excise taxes ,from gas and tires and whatnot that theres barely enough for him to buy votes
THERE ARE PEOPLE IN THIS COUNTRY READY TO PUT IT BACK ON ITS FEET AS SOON AS BIG BROTHER GETS OUT OF THE WAY THE SOONER THEY LEARN IT THE SOONER WE CAN GET STARTED AND THE SOONER IT WILL BE DONE

not once has anyone mentioned the moral bankruptcy this country faces, only financial. Our founding fathers dedicated this country to God in prayer and we no longer fight to keep his name in the Public Sector. We are quit to throw out “God-given unalienable rights” but we don’t fight for him. Don’t just fight the government, fight back for Him, why aren’t we standing up to Atheist Groups who are sueing the pants off of schools and churches faster than we are aware. Say no to FFRF!!! God will help us if we fight for him. If we allow these people to take him out, why would he protect us? Think about that. 9/11 was our wake up call and we aren’t listening. Do you think the economic collapse was an accident after 9/11? Our hedge has been removed. We are Israel all over again. Please don’t mock the message. Just think about it soberly for a few minutes. This is not a call to religion but a call to return to God as individuals then as a Nation!!

Sorry Dummberboy but you force me to post these yet again:

“The United States is in no sense founded upon the Christian doctrine.”
      –John Adams

“The purpose of separation of church and state is to keep forever
from these shores the ceaseless strife that has soaked the soil of Europe with
      blood for centuries.”
      –James Madison

“Religions are all alike – founded upon fables and mythologies.”
      - Thomas Jefferson

“The Christian God is a being of terrific character — cruel, vindictive,
      capricious, and unjust.”
      – Thomas Jefferson

“In no instance have . . . the churches been guardians of the liberties of the people.”
      - James Madison

Even Founding Fathers, who many of the flaming Blazers seem to idolize, had their religious doubts. Keep religion OUT of our everyday lives unless it is chosen by us. Thank you.

At this point a scorched earth policy is the only answer, eliminate several unconstitutional departments, they’re just costing money and they only F up our lives and make daily living tedious at best. I have the Rx to heal America, the one thing that will work, cut the size of all government by 75%,you might say that’s excessive,I say do the cutting or it’ll collapse of it’s own weight.

A sudden collapse will result in civil war,the desired outcome that Barry wants,do it in an orderly fashion and we might have a chance.

The economy is as bad as it was during the last great depression, people don’t see it because there are no bread lines due to food stamps, the homeless numbers are relatively low due to welfare and unemployment insurance.

The economy at this point is all smoke and mirrors. What happens when the smoke clears, a few mirrors are broken then people see there is nothing beyond the mirrors?

The major reason relevant to our discussion as to why Romney is a better choice than Gary Johnson: He actually has a chance of winning.

I have said this 100 times and I’ll say it again: Either Romney or B.O. will win. Gary Johnson, Ron Paul, Bugs Bunny, Elvis Presley, Mickey Mouse, etc…. all have the same chance of winning = zero. How can you make a difference by voting for a sure loser? At least vote for someone in the game. And don’t tell me there are 5 people on your ballot in Virginia because we all know that it doesn’t matter how many people are on the ballot, there are only two people in the race.

@SOY… ahhh… see what you mean. I was about to apologize for partially giving out the answer key… but nobody read it:D! Oh, well.

OK Class… here is the answer…
Romney is an inferior “candidate” to Johnson in every way except one-
He actually stands a chance of winning.

SOY, like me, resides in a swing state. His vote counts.
SOY also knows, like me, that the more votes a candidate gets, the more govt funding that party gets next time around.

Unlike me, SOY ain’t no HO.

He desperately wants someone to convince him to vote for Romney but no-one even comes close.
      He’s a pragmatic fellow….
      … an engineer for chrissakes!

Make a better argument, or he, and thousands like him, WILL “throw their vote away” on Johnson.

PS: All Libertarians in non- swing states SHOULD vote for Johnson.

The only way to raise government revenue is to get off the back of business and allow the economy to grow. Taxation won’t net the government anything. If you look at government revenue since WWII it averages 18% of GDP. It is a remarkably consistent graph even though tax policy had varied considerably, I believe 18% is all they will get and if they want more the economy has to grow.

Soyburger: I currently reside in reality. I will be voting for Romney and I will cast my vote with full support and gladness in my heart. If, in the next month, you decide to move out of your fantasy land and join reality, I would be happy to welcome you to the neighborhood. I might even bring you a pie. If, on the other hand, you wish to remain in your make believe world where voting for fictional characters (or their equivalent) makes you feel all tingly inside, so be it (or soy be it as the case may be).

A vote for Gary Johnson is a vote for the POS Obama.

I’m no more republican than you are Soy…..but I am big on common sense. I’ve said it before, I’m just left of libertarian….especially when it comes to Gov and Foreign Policy. Some of the other stuff, thats why we have 50 petri dishes.

Gary Johnson is on my ballot along with Mitt Romney and Barack Obama. That is reality.

Many of us are not weak-minded enough to think that we can only choose between Big Government A and Big Government B. Your criticisms remind me of 1984. Maybe some day between now and election day you will realize that your party has waged war on the libertarian wing of its own party – and that your efforts would be better spent trying to convince the 47% of Americans who are mindless and ignorant….Assuming you have the decency and ability to reason with people

ENCINOM: Tax increases are not the answer. Spending cuts are the answer. There is no way to tax enough in order to cover what is currently being spent.
      _____________________
You can not solve the problem of the debt with only cutting spending, you must also increase revenue. THE GOP has blocked, to the point of risking default every attempt to raise taxes to the modest Clinton era rates on the 1%. Neither Romney nor Ryan can mention which problems they will cut, cause they know their math just doesn’t add up.

Also, the number 1 problem today is not the debt, Beck and Fox have lied to you, the #1 problem is jobs, cutting spending will kill jobs, while lowering the taxes on the 1%, as Romney proposes will do nothing but transfer more wealth to the top. CBO has scored Romney’s plan and found that while it increases taxes for the middle class he lowers taxes for the 1%, so who is waging class warfare against the middle class?

Cutting spending and increasing the tax breaks for the 1% will not create a single job. Reagan’s tinkle on economics was a failure for all but the wealthy.

So try coming back with an actual argument as to why Romney needs more tax cuts while he seeks to raise taxes on the middle class.

If Johnson “is not in the race”, why are republicans doing everything they can to prevent him from being on ballots?

      encinom,

You have no idea what you’re talking about. Jobs….government spending equals jobs? Where does the money come from genius? Either you take it from people (which is contractionary) OR you borrow it (which gives way to crowding out in the capital markets…you know where people actually create jobs) OR you print it which simply reduces confidence, raises interest rates (when not manipulated) and makes us all poorer.

If taxing and spending created jobs and gave us prosperity then why do we have 20% U-6 with 1.3Tr in deficit spending and the highest corporate tax rates in the world? Simple question…go.

We got here by electing insane people to run the government, then we stayed asleep working, raising our families and with life itself. Now it’s too late to stop whats coming, if barry wins we lose, if Romney wins we lose.

There is no way out of this mess, at least for a few generations.

Stelex, i agree, but, I think all the pieces are in place. If Romney wins I think the communists/blacks/muslims will go nuts with cries of racism and a civil war will come.

I may be a pessimist but I do not see a way out.

Chips…..just getting you up to date. We’ve been over run by Progressive’s (communists) working for a Global government. Doing everything they can to bankrupt and destroy America and the Constitution. Players are on both sides so it gets tricky unless you pay attention. The UN is the devil and all Progressive’s bow to it. Filled with delusional academics…the UN wants to Socially engineer society based on the Chinese model …….+or- ….using Islam in America they will erode our constitution in the name of peace and security. (TSA???) Obama’s people in Hollywood made a film for him to use at a later date…..ie9/11/12….resulting in the death of Gov officials and SEALS which they still blame for the terrorist attack. Holder is a criminal and has done way to much to write about here. Republican chicks are much much hotter than Dimwits and the Mars rover found some sphere’s. Oh yeah…….The Lame Stream Media is in the tank for Obama…….Commies all of them. Toni Iommi seems to be doing well and maybe we’ll see a Sabbath tour. Its fall now and I hate winter…..why am I in NH you ask……..It used to be a cool State…..Wake up NH….Wake up America. Hope that helps…….Be well
