The Obama campaign last week released a two-minute video of the president accusing GOP rival Mitt Romney of supporting policies that, he says, caused the Great Recession, a claim the Washington Post’s (WaPo) Fact Checker has awarded three Pinocchios:
At the root of the Fact Checker article is President Obama’s claim that Mitt Romney’s support for “bigger tax cuts for the wealthy” and “fewer regulations on Wall Street” will take us back to the “same trickle-down policies that led to the crisis in the first place.” As the WaPo’s Glenn Kessler notes, the name “George W. Bush” is never mentioned “but is certainly implied,” meaning the president is more or less trying to paint Romney as another Bush.
But let’s put aside the specifics of Romney’s tax plan (what little there are) and his stance on Wall Street reform and focus on the notion that tax cuts and deregulation caused the Great Recession.
Did the Bush-era tax cuts lead to the meltdown? To put it bluntly, there is nothing to support this claim.
Indeed, Ezra Klein, the sole source cited by the Obama campaign on this statement, is quoted as saying “I am absolutely not saying the Bush tax cuts led to the financial crisis. To my knowledge, there’s no evidence of that.”
“Klein is right. While some on the left have speculated about some kind of Rube Goldberg phenomenon — that the tax cuts put so much money in the pockets of the rich that they had nothing to spend it on but risky and exotic financial instruments — we are unaware of any respected academic study making this link,” Kessler writes.
“The Bush tax cuts have been amply criticized for costing too much and generating too little economic growth, but that’s entirely different from causing the Great Recession,” he adds.
And as for President Obama implying Bush-era deregulation led to the financial crisis, Kessler points out that the 631-page final report of the National Commission on the Causes of the Financial and Economic Crisis in the United States notes deregulation may have played a role in the meltdown — but it was about three decades’ worth.
In response to critics who argue the Great Recession wasn’t caused by just Bush-era tax cuts and “deregulation,” the Obama campaign claims the president was saying all of Bush’s policies created the crisis. However, even if that were true, it’s certainly not clear in the video.
“Obama mentions only two things: tax cuts and deregulation,” Kessler notes. “He then adds that such ‘trickle-down policies’ led to the crisis — and ‘trickle down’ is Democratic pejorative for ‘tax cuts for the rich.’”
So what’s the final verdict?
“It is time for the Obama campaign to retire this talking point, no matter how much it seems to resonate with voters. The financial crisis of 2008 stemmed from a variety of complex factors, in particular the bubble in housing prices and the rise of exotic financial instruments,” Kessler writes.
“Deregulation was certainly an important factor, but as the government commission concluded, the blame for that lies across administrations, not just in the last Republican one,” he adds.
He continues:
In any case, the Bush tax cuts belong at the bottom of the list — if at all. Moreover, it is rather strange for the campaign to cite as its source an article that, according to the author, does not support this assertion.
We nearly made this Four Pinocchios but ultimately decided that citing deregulation in conjunction with tax cuts kept this line out of the “whopper” category. Still, in his effort to portray Romney as an echo of Bush, the president really stretches the limits here.

Islam and Islamic terrorists, and our president and most of his cabinet are actively aiding the very forces we are fighting! Why in the blank haven’t congress brought him up on charges of treason?!! He has spent billions of our money supporting the Muslim Brotherhood and countries who support Iran and other radicals, if that is not treason I don’t know what would be. It’s time to fire congress and get some real Statesmen in there. Then we wouldn’t have to worry about who our president was.

Oct. 1, 2012 at 9:53pmSure Treason…I have some swamp land for sale…..the polling is grossly slanted in Dems favor…in many instances Dem oversampling is +10 or more….funny how the so called spread is 10 points in Ohio when internal polling shows Obama losing. Let’s face facts…the MSM has been exposed as the liars they are…Many many rank and file folks now know this sad truth.
Here is another historical fact…in Oct 1979 MSM polling had Carter up by double digits over Reagan…they were saying then that it was all but over for the GOP and yet by election day the polls were dead wrong. The only poll that matters is the exit poll on election day. The actual vote will tell this story. I think, no I’m sure, that the GOP will win big on Nov 6th…Why ? This is why…the energy and anger today is an order of mahnitude greater than it was in 1979. I remember the mood, the horrible state of the economy, the crazy policies of the Catrer admin none of which hold a candle to the disasters that the past 4 years has wrought. 2010, the Scott Brown election, The Wisconsin repudiation of leftist /Dem Union collusion all add up to one thing and that is definitely not going to be second term for Dems/Obama. The only way I see Obama winning is through massive voter fraud and corruption and or a coup of some kind.

Oct. 1, 2012 at 8:13pmI’m Obama and here is my plan (actually the same plan I claimed I had four years ago, but hey, I’ve been busy playing golf and raising money, so give me some time here.
1) Blame Bush. We are in a bad situation, in fact worse than when I took office but that is because Bush is really a bad guy and I’m a good guy.
2) I’m going to create 1 million jobs. (pssst, Mr. President we need like 23 million jobs.) Uh, I mean 1 billion jobs. How? Uh…Well I’m just going to do it, even if they have to be in China or France or something.
3) Cut taxes on the Middle class and soak the rich by passing things like health care with 12 new middle class taxes, giving waivers to GE (my friend) and Unions (my friends) and making inflation drop you into poverty. —what, that doesn’t sound like tax the rich and help the middle class – well I’m just not explaining it well enough.
4) Lower energy costs and increase home production by investing in crappy green companies, stopping drilling, shutting down coal mines, and sending billions overseas for foreign companies to drill where we can’t, Oh, and destroy our middle east policy so they will raise prices too. -What, didn’t explain that well enough either, well you’ll have to vote me back in in order for you to understand – just ask Pelosi.
7) or whatever number I’m on. Mitt Romney is bad, he’s evil. He wants to steal your children and marry all your wives forcing them to have babies.
I’m Barry.. Barack Obama I approve of me.

Oct. 1, 2012 at 8:28pmI could deal with the Obama lies too, IF we had some real journalists that would stand on a stump and yell it to the mountaintops. But his advasaries treat him like a senator (“To my distinguished college I would like to respectrully disagree that the sky is green Sir”) and his advocates excuse everything (“let’s not look at the economy, the jobs numbers, the war effort, the broken promises, or even logic… let’s ask the critical questions. What is your favorite beer and when will you return to The View?”). Let alone there being any Journalists who follow the facts and stories rather than preach their opinions and desires.
Face it, those who want to vote for Obama don’t watch anything of a factual nature that contradicts his rhetoric. Those who want to vote against Obama wouldn’t believe anything about this guy anymore.
My gut tells me that the Obama groupies who tune into the debate might just for the first time hear some facts and contradiction to the dream world he has tried to create. I pray a segment of them might recognize the truth and be disillusioned enough to think for a change, and if not that, to at least loose enough interest to stay home. But EVERY American Patriot had better make it to the polls and bring a friend.
I believe if you lie often enough, many people begin to think it’s the truth, but I also believe if you lie too often enough about everything, even the simple minded will figure out they can’t trust you.

Oct. 1, 2012 at 10:32pmCommunists always have a scapegoat at the ready…it’s part and parcel of thier modus operandi.
Obama being the good little Commie that he is demonstrates this tactic and his mastery of it on a daily basis. By reading just two pamphets (The Communist Manifesto and Rules for Radicals), you will have gained all the necessary info needed to figure out this Admins moves, it’s policies, how and why it’s doing what it is doing. That insight makes sense of the agenda of the Dems and this Admins actions/motivations, how they are going to operate in the future should they hold onto power. The end game is afoot, make no mistake, another term for this Admin will complete the collapse of the free market capitalist system that Marxists have been toiling towards for decades.

Oct. 1, 2012 at 11:20pmNo, he claims responsibility for good things, which he had nothing to do with. Then, blames everyone else for his mistakes (which is everything he has done so far)!

Oct. 1, 2012 at 6:51pm“…tax cuts have been amply criticized for costing too much…” The liberal argument that tax cuts cost anything at all is rediculous if for no other reason that it implies that one’s earnings belong to the government. If our earnings belong to US then it can’t COST the government anything to NOT receive something that wasn’t the government’s in the first place.
The idea that tax cuts cost something is no different than my neighbor spending HIS salary costs ME money. The assumption that I own my neighbor’s wages is just as rediculous as assuming the governments owns my wages.
Unfortunately, this is exactly where we stand today. Politicians think they own our wages. The only way to end this financial reign of terror is to burn the current tax system, implement a flat, universal tax code that requires either a super super majority or constitutional ammendment to change.
