What Was the Dot on Romney’s Lapel Flag Pin? The Campaign Tells Us

In the spirit of Sesame Street and Big Bird (which did get a mention during Wednesday’s presidential debate), we couldn’t help but notice the candidates’ lapel pins and note “one of these things is not like the other.”

What are we talking about? As was brought up on TheBlaze live chat during the debate, take a look at Romney’s pin. Not only is it larger than President Barack Obama’s flag pin but Romney’s appears to have a dot in the center of the red and white stripes.

What is it?

Some on Twitter have been pointing out the “black dot” on the pin — and have noticed the size difference as well.

Romneys Flag Lapel Pin Said to Have the Secret Service Star on It

The Associated Press has said via Twitter that it is a Secret Service star and speculates it was the Secret Service who gave him the pin.

The Twitter handle @DGJackson — or Mitt’s Body Man — wrote that it was a Secret Service star on a pin given to him by an agent a long time ago.

There are some who speculate the candidate is wearing this pin because he may have forgotten his own. It’s possible. But the writer of the blog Pied Type points out that Romney’s running mate Paul Ryan has been seeing wearing a similar pin as well. It also notes that both men previously have worn flag lapel pins with elephants on them.

So what’s the answer? TheBlaze emailed Romney’s camp which confirmed it was a Secret Service star.

  There are different branches of the Secret Service. The one I choose on MANTA was the “United States Secret Service” division of D.C.. It was established in 1905.
  
  Here are wikipedia quotes:

It’s still the american flag. Gov. Romney shouldn’t have worn it “defaced”. The Secet Service could have given him a regular lapel pin and Gov. Romney could wear it below the flag. Don’t get me wrong, I think Gov. Romney is the most qualified canidate for the job.

  That pin doesn’t change what our flag stands for. You can still see the stars and stripes. The emblem is from an agency that puts their lives in danger more than I. This is no where near replacing the stars and stripes with your own campaign logo. You do not change our AMERICAN FLAG.

  Sparky my understanding of that incident was that it was a few agents that acted like pigs and got hookers, not the entire service. There are plenty of honorable men that are being tainted by those few that engaged in bad behavior and I think it’s a bad idea to make sweeping statements and generalizations about it.

  This code is the guide for all handling and display of the Stars and Stripes. It does not impose penalties for misuse of the United States Flag. That is left to the states and to the federal government for the District of Columbia. Each state has its own flag law.
  
  Criminal penalties for certain acts of desecration to the flag were contained in Title 18 of the United States Code prior to 1989. The Supreme Court decision in Texas v. Johnson; June 21, 1989, held the statute unconstitutional. This statute was amended when the Flag Protection Act of 1989 (Oct. 28, 1989) imposed a fine and/or up to I year in prison for knowingly mutilating, defacing, physically defiling, maintaining on the floor or trampling upon any flag of the United States. That SS/Flag pin is given to people that have already been vetted (deemed “safe”) by the SS. SS Agents look for those pins on people to determine if they’ve already been “cleared” so to speak. The pins change at various venues, for security purposes.

Kind of like using different hand-stamps at clubs.

  The Bronze…you know nothing about it. The SS has dozens of types of lapel pins and other things for sale in their HQ building in DC. Anyone in the building can buy the stuff. Those flag pins are given out to thousands of people. It has nothing to do with being “vetted”. Those pins are totally different.

My Goodness! The American People were just rescued from Communism! We now have a CANDIDATE! At last we can take one deep breath and thank the hard work done by the folks who planned for this big win. I was always optimistic but a little worried with the polls showing nothing good. But now we can be sure that the money we contributed won’t be wasted. I will double my contribution now that I can see where the power is. Obama is TOAST and I couldn’t be happier!

From what I seen as a red spot on his pin,I thought it was for american blood spilled in other countries for our men and women who lost their lives for the freedom of a nation.And I do like the idea of adding some redblood as a sacrifice we have indured for other countries at a cost to 2000 + families without their loved ones..

  From what I seen as a red spot on his pin,I thought it was for american blood spilled in other countries for our men and women who lost their lives for the freedom of a nation.

What stood out to me about the lapel pins is that, once again, Emperor Obama has done a volte-face. Remember 4 years ago when he refused to wear an American flag pin? Now that he’s in campaign mode, he’s changed his flip-flopping mind!

None of the examples you give of a previous Romney pins are the same as the one he wore tonight. One you show has a giant star, tonight’s was a black dot. The one from a previos debate on the youtube clip had a small rectangle on the bottom right corner, tonight’s was a black dot off center. I don’t really care what it was but this article did not answer anything.

  Another thing clearly visible.. Obama was reading from crib notes during his lady from Nevada story. It appears that is what he was doing while looking down. Watch the debate over, its slower the second time. Watch the eyes, body tilt, muscle tension.

Romney ROCKED tonight!!! Keep praying for Romney – you know Obama team is coming after Romney with a lot of garbage!!! I prayed for Romney before the debate and I will continue to pray before all his debates!!
