Horrific: UK Mother Kills Infant By Stuffing Pages of the Bible Into Her Mouth (Is Gov’t to Blame?)

Julia Lovemore Kills Baby By Stuffing Bible Pages Down Throat | NHS

Julia Lovemore (Photo Credit: BBC)

In 2009, a woman suffering from bi-polar disorder killed her six-week-old baby by stuffing pages of the Bible down the infant’s throat, dousing the child in mineral turpentine and then jumping on her tiny body. The horrifically tragic incident took place near Cambridge, United Kingdom.

The mother, 41-year-old Julia Lovemore, has been described as a Christian fundamentalist in media, but it’s quite obvious, based on the facts, that her mental illness — and not her faith — is what drove her to commit unimaginable horror.

Among the most shocking details in this instance is that Julia and her husband, David, were allegedly under the care of National Health Service (NHS) workers. Two years after the incident took place, it seems health officials are taking the blame for failing to take notice the dire situation that was occurring in the home.

Take, for instance, this important fact: Just one hour before the infant’s murder took place, officials were at the house. The Daily Mail provides a recap of what is said to have occurred:

The computer games designer, 39, had been frantically praying on the living room floor, shouting for the devil to be taken out of his wife.

The health workers even heard his wife call from downstairs, but left without seeing her to arrange a formal assessment of the family.

Tragically, an hour later, Mr Lovemore carried his lifeless baby into Milton Health surgery, along with their first child, who was critically ill after being doused in white spirit.

Considering the family’s past history, it’s hard to imagine how the situation was left to fester. In 2006, records apparently show that Lovemore attempted to smother her first child with a pillow in an effort to get her to stop crying. But the documentation that highlighted this attack was apparently lost due to what the Daily Mail calls “fatal errors” on behalf of the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Trust.

Also, in another sign that something was wrong in the household, just five days before the attack, Lovemore called to tell officials that she didn’t want any more home visits. This troubling sign that something was awry apparently also went unchecked, though.

“There was a failure to collectively recognise the extent to which this family were a risk to their children once they were mentally unwell, and to act more assertively to address their non-compliance with medication,” reads a new report released by NHS East of England Strategic Health Authority.

The Daily Mail continues, explaining how the report also highlights the couple’s religious extremism and how it clouded the investigation surrounding their ability to care for their two children:

The report has now criticised Cambridge County Council, local police and the NHS trust for failing to protect the girl, who died in June 2009.

It said there was lack of ‘assertiveness’ in making Lovemore take her medication.

It was ruled that too much time was spent on determining whether the family’s extreme religious views were a sign of mental illness rather than looking at the risk they posed to the children.

As a result of the incident, changes will be made to the methods that the local NHS trust uses in assessing mental wellness.

Very tragic story in our eyes. I of course don’t pretend to know why God allowed it to happen. He did NOT MAKE it happen, but he could have stopped it if he needed to. His way, plans and methods are for Him alone to know. So all those who “just cannot believe in a god who would …….” you will never understand until you acknowledge that if HE is WORTHY AT ALL, of being GOD then he can, and will, do whatever He wants, however He wants, and whenever He wants to. Otherwise you make yourself higher than GOD. It’s much easier just to say that you ‘think’ He doesn’t exist, but in your heart you know that He DOES. He DOES LOVE us every one and is waiting and hoping we will acknowledge and love Him in return. It took me far too long to learn the TRUE answer to being happy in this life – and it’s a very difficult thing which I think for almost all of us is/will be a lifelong learning process, but the answer is ONLY found in Mark 8:34-38.

Sorry, but a “Christian” loves the Bible , and their children. This woman is not a Christian. I think her husband was correct in his analyses that her mental condition was actually a spiritual one. I also don’t see why he is being lumped together with her in this case. There is no eveidence that he did anything but try to help his wife and keep his family together at the same time. Who can predict someone’s worst actions?

They throw the “Christian” label too easily whenever a murderer, sicko, or psychopath gets in the news.

Jared Loughner? Even though he was an ardent nihilist who admired Friedrick Nietzsche (who remarked “God is dead”), they were quick to label him a Christian.

Timothy McVeigh? Said “science is my religion”. That didn’t stop them from labeling him a Christian.

And now, this woman. Tore up the Holy book, killed her innocent baby in a horrific fashion…yep, somehow, she’s a Christian.

Yes they do throw that around don’t they? Kinda like we throw around Islamist whenever someone does something horrible.

On the other hand, anything a Jew does must be okay because they are God’s chosen people right? What if I could prove they were NOT? Jews are of the tribe of Judah, correct? Israel is God’s chosen, his ‘wife.’ Judah and Israel are NOT one in the same as evidenced by Jeremiah 3:8 .. I could really go a lot farther in stating that Christians are Israel, and after being divorced by God we were sent away. The only way we could come back to God afterwards was through Christ. And all those that accompany (Gentiles) were accepted as well, just as the Egyptians were that left with Moses and the people.

Religion is a mindset…Christianity is a heart condition! All religion is man made…and it is controlled in their mind…It is very difficult to get the truth in the “thinking” alone..The word says everyone does what is right in his own thinking…..to what outcome? But the Word says out of the hEARt man believes unto right standing (before God) It is His Spirit to man’s spirit not mindset to mental flow…and until you get at the core of what Christ is, you will flounder in your mental assent and set up false groups and teachings, all generated from the standpoint of mental assent alone! To blame fundamentalism is as silly as it is to blame these psychiatrists for misjudging the situation…You need discernment in issues like these….It is a sad horrific thing to see happen…There is a way which seems right to man but the end there of is destruction…TRUTH is what we want, understanding and comprehension is what we need but is incomplete without searching the source of all Truth…from your hEARt! It’s not happening on these shallow levels of understanding! There is more to life than the simplistic platitudes given in societies…Generally Truth is run out of town on a rail and never invited back…An unwillingness to be one who longs for the truth will never find it! And one who searches for truth from their hEARt like a deer pants for water will always find it!

There is a difference between psychological illness and psychiatric illness.
With the first, you can talk and possibly prescribe certain medications to see an improvement. Talk therapy can actually be a “cure” of sorts for psychological illness (in which case, being raised in a fundamentalist religion and overcoming beliefs in witches and demons might count as something to be “cured” simply by talking and learning).
This is not so with a psychiatric illness. This woman likely was a paranoid schizophrenic. I knew of a few in my tiny religious town. In my church there were those of us who believed in God, yes, but also those of us who were clearly off their nut. I was good friends with a schizophrenic and I watched him go from normal to complete deterioration. Then later in college I practically met his twin, another schizo with religious delusions which terrified him greatly. When you have a nightmare, you get to wake up from it. When paranoid schizophrenics have nightmares, they don’t wake up. They can only explain it to themselves as they have seen a glimpse of Hell, and/or they are being possessed by the devil.
When people fail to see the differences between being religious and being crazy, they let these people slip through the cracks, or they chalk up all religious people into a psychotic stereotype. Some people are religious but still perfectly sane, and perfectly GOOD people. We should not confuse to the two just because the paranoid confuses them in his mind.

Now ask any parent who lost parental rights if that is not true? If you get the government involved with your life there will be consequences…plain and simple. Nothing new.

Further proof that religion in the hands of the sane is uplifting…. Religion in the hands of the un-stable or mentally ill (like the Jim Jones / Muslim / Mrs. Lovemore crowd) is nothing but dangerous…

When religion “guides” your life, it can be a GREAT asset in helping you get by day to day… When it “rules” your life, it can become dangerous to yourself AND others….

I am agnostic, and don’t prescribe to ANY religion….

I think MANY people DO need religion in order to feel that all of the bad things in the world happen for a reason… After all, the thought that life is futile and amounts to nothing once you die, can be too depressing for people to handle…

I have no problem with religion most of the time… I only have a problem with it when it is taken to the extreme (like this, or Islam, or other fanatical devotion that hinders or hurts the lives of others…)

      Thats all I meant… Read a little more closely…

Religious freedom is precious just like all freedoms. I don’t propose taking away any freedoms but I do propose we keep an eye out for schizophrenic parents of babies.

PLEASE don’t think I was trying to call for any kind of Religious prohibition…

I just think people need to be more vigilant with the people they are surrounded by, and when things look like they are getting “out-of-hand” that they have the guts to stand up and at least SAY something… When you leave a crazy person to their own devices, they typically get crazier…

But I agree, this lady would have done this, religion or no…. SHE was crazy, and religion CLEARLY wasn’t helping, and MAY have been possibly hurting her worse… (in the end its not for me to say which…)

But we ALL know people that are SO religious, it makes you wonder if it is healthy to be like “that”….

As I said, God gave us a life so we could live it… NOT so we could spend ALL of our existence pushing life aside for the sake of “faith”… If god NEEDED our praise and absolute devotion, he wouldn’t have given us a choice…

“Life moves pretty fast, if you don’t stop to look around once and a while, you might miss it….” Not doing so would be an insult to our existence… (just my person belief, take it or leave it….)

If we use that excuse then we have to us it again for people that say they were religious, but insane, that have ever killed someone. So we would say that Hitler was possessed by the devil, so it wasn’t his fault that he killed all those Jews.

To INDEPENDENT SUPPORTER (in this thread):

What makes you think that a person is “INNOCENT” if he/she allows him/herself to fall sway to the DEVIL (i.e., to EVIL IMPULSES)? God gives each of us a CONSCIENCE, an innate knowledge of Right from Wrong, along with FREE WILL.

Will God hold those blameless who FREELY CHOOSE EVIL? Doubt it! IMO, we humans are getting real-life lessons every day, with our current problems and all the outrages in the news, to demonstrate the consequences of “dirtying up” our reception of Truth and sabotaging our own ability to CHOOSE GOOD INSTEAD OF EVIL.

Isn’t that what this coming ELECTION is all about? Isn’t that how we got into the MESS we are presently enduring? So many people have permitted their INTEGRITY, their CONSCIENCE, their HONESTY-DETECTOR (call it what you will) to be DIRTIED UP and basically MALFUNCTIONING. It is the only explanation for the MESS we are now working so hard to correct.

Romney is right: Our choices have MORAL as well as ECONOMIC and SOCIAL consequences. And our MORALITY–or lack thereof–will determine our CHOICES.

@GOLDI-LOX Where in my post did I say “Innocent”? Also on another note I made it clear (or so I thought) that people blame there mistakes or actions on “religion” to much. It has gotten worse over the years, everyone wants to say (that is most Christians), that the “devil” must have made that happen or “demons” must have possessed them, causing them to act this way.

In essence you and them are giving a way out of a crime, a way out of taking blame. Whether or not God and Satan (Lucifer) is real is beside the point. Religion has always acted as a scapegoat, and to those who believe in God tend to believe the person that claims they were doing god’s work or the demon posses ed them and to those who don’t believe in God just rule them insane.

Either way they have a way out, I pointed that out to “Hoot_Owl”, because she basically said the devil was controlling her, so don’t you see that we are just giving people a way out of the crime they committed ALONE, they know what they were doing, they understand what they were doing, they didn’t have a “Spirit” possessing them, they just wanted to use the excuse to try and get out of the crime and if you know law, when she goes in the courtroom they will plead “temporary insanity” or “mentally unstable” then she will go to a correctional facility and be released a couple of months later.

I also pointed out that “Hitler” used the same method or scapegoat, he claimed he was doing “God’s” will.

@GOLDI-LOX Ahh, OK, just a misunderstanding, I apologize. I agree with you and I wish more people would see it this way.

America is going down and fast no is this all to blame on Obama? No, we were in bad shape before he took office, but he didn’t help any and is turning this country into the direction of communism. That’s why I want Romney in, now is he all that and a bag of chips? No, he has his faults, but he is a stepping stone in the right direction and will help get our country back to where it needs to be.

Some may say I am racist and that’s why I want Romney, that is not true, if Herman Cain was still running I would have voted for him. I seen the stuff the press and media were saying about his past, but that’s just it, it was his “past”. Everyone makes mistakes.

Obama like many politicians has made many promises and like most he didn’t fulfill them, but what makes him different from all the rest was his attitude. He went golfing for times than not, vacation to Hawaii and other hot spots, etc… While we the American population suffered, it wasn’t just Whites either it was also Blacks and Hispanics and every other American citizen.

So when you vote, take into consideration of who would be the “BEST” candidate not the one who can make the most promises.

You’re being too polite. I would offer other suggestions, but they will just delete my post.

      How are ya, Jack? :)

The National Health Service faled in ths matter – and provides a perfect example of what will happen under ObamaCare if it is not gutted completely into extinction.

God keep the child in His loving arms for all of the ages to come.

Unbelievably sad. God bless those children. Take comfort they’re with their father now.

You wrote, “Take comfort they’re with their father now.”

Wouldn’t be TOO comforted by that (unless you’re referring to their Heavenly Father). There’s got to be more than meets the eye in this tragedy. The earthly father’s occupation (preoccupation?) of “designing computer games” sounds suspiciously involved… But since we don’t know details, it’s hard to say whether the children would (be) (have been) safer with him…
