Maine GOP Attacks Dem Candidate for Living ‘Bizarre Double Life’ on World of Warcraft Game

Maine GOP Attacks Colleen Lachowicz for Living Bizarre Double Life on World of Warcraft Game

Seemingly out of ideas, the Maine Republican Party has created a website, distributed postcards and issued a press release in an effort to expose Democratic state Senate candidate Colleen Lachowicz’s “bizarre double life” she lives through the wildly popular online game “War of Warcraft.” She is reportedly a “level 85 orc” in the game, NBC News reports.

The website, colleensworld.com, outlines Lachowicz’s involvement in the game, which has roughly 20 million total players around the world.

“Colleen Lachowicz is a Democrat candidate for Maine State Senate. In Colleen’s online fantasy world, she gets away with crude, vicious and violent comments like the ones below. Maine needs a State Senator that lives in the real world, not in Colleen’s fantasy world,” the site reads.

Here are some of quotes that the Maine GOP-operated website attributes to Lachowicz:

“So I’m a level 68 orc rogue girl.  I stab things . . . a lot. Who would have thought that a peace-lovin’, social worker and democrat would enjoy that?!”

“I can kill stuff without going to jail. There are some days when this is more necessary than others.”

“I’m so jealous! I wish I wasn’t at work. I’d much rather be gaming with my guildies!”

However, Lachowicz also regularly makes anti-conservative statements. Perhaps if the Maine GOP left out the “World of Warcraft” nonsense, they might of had a point to make about the importance of civility in politics.

“Now if you’ll excuse me, I may have to go hunt down Grover Norquist and drown HIM in my bath tub.”

“Or my dream from election season last year where John McCain sat at my childhood dining room table and I reamed him a new a**hole about Sarah Palin.”

“It sums up the teabagger mind set.”

“I tend to think of them as teabaggers.”

Maine’s GOP has also circulated a press release titled:  ”Democratic Senate Candidate Colleen Lachowicz’s Disturbing Alter-Ego Revealed” which accuses her of living a “time-consuming double life” and post cards that attempt to tie the Democrat to her “World of Warcraft” character and feature her online comments.

“In Colleen’s World she gets away with crude, vicious and violent online comments,” the postcard reads:

In a statement posted on her website, Lachowicz mocked Maine’s Republican Party for the attack, calling it “very weird.”

“I think it’s weird that I’m being targeted for playing online games. Apparently I’m in good company since there are 183 million other Americans who also enjoy online games. What’s next? Will I be ostracized for playing Angry Birds or Words with Friends? If so, guilty as charged!”

Huffington Post reports that Maine Democratic Party Chair Ben Grant also responded in a statement, calling the attack a “new low” in the state’s politics:

Maine Democratic Party Chair Ben Grant also criticized the attack, calling it “a new low” and “childish” in a statement. “Tom Martin and his allies have been in power for two years, virtually unchecked, and they have nothing to show for it, and no record to run on. Instead, they want us to debate the personal, private life of our candidate and what games she plays for recreation,” he said. “Colleen may play ‘World of Warcraft’ online, but it has been far more harmful to Maine people that Tom Martin has been playing ‘Worlds of Hurt’ (at level 90) with their pensions, access to health care, and public schools.”

She has a right to play whatever silly online game she wants. She has a right to say whatever ignorant stuff she wants to say while playing that game.

We have the right to think she’s a totally dysfunctional idiot for doing so.

And she is a dysfunctional idiot…apparently.

First: If you play online games and youre older than 19, youre a loser, and have too much time on your hands.. Dem or Rep. Second: If you aspire to be a leader, in the most exclusive club in the world and play WOW, you should not be elected. To those that defend this as liberty, fine, but you are still weird, have too much time, and need to get a life. Left or Right.

      @HCARTEXAS:
why does playing WoW “disqualify” people from holding an elected office and why does playing online games when you are over 19 mean “youre a loser, and have too much time on your hands..”? not everyone spends 20 hours a day playing online games. there are plenty of people that have lives and are certainly not losers. heck there are even some people like the guy known online as “total biscuit” who is married and runs a successful business yet used to play WoW (heck his business started primarily because of his love for WoW), you can’t tell me that a person who went from a person working at “Game” (the Britain equivalent of gamestop) to becoming a person who owns a successful business that they started, is an internet celebrity, and travels around the world is a “loser”.

First: If you play fantasy sport games and youre older than 19, youre a loser, and have too much time on your hands.
First: If you play with your car and youre older than 19, youre a loser, and have too much time on your hands.

First: If you do anything other than work and pay taxes and youre older than 19, youre a loser, and have too much time on your hands.

What people do in their spare time, and we ALL have spare time that we waste one way or another, is none of your business. It’s not healthy to be all business all the time and what hobby people choose is all equally irrelevant to real life. Be it playing some MMO or watching some sport game.

@Back to Reality…totally agree on all points. The only thing the ad did though was win the geek vote for her.

I’m not disturbed by the gaming, I’m disturbed by the comments about reality mixed in with the fantasy game. They blame violence from teens on such games…that’s where they should have gone with the ad. The left wants to get rid of violent games because people could act out that violence. It’s the double standard again.

World of warcraft has a aging population that the majority is of voting age. Its not wise for the republicans to attack this democrat.

This game requires team work that is unheard of in the business world. I have never seen a manager find 40 dedicated employees and make them preform at 100%. In some events this game requires 40 people to follow instructions and can result in hours of wasted time and failure is 1 person fails to preform.

Majority of the people that I have met during my time playing this game hate politics or vote republican. By turning on the spot light, you have open the eyes of millions of non-voting 18-30 year olds. Who do you think they will vote for now? Does Romney play WOW?

Compare this game to other hobbies. Hunting – the act oh going out and killing something. (I am a hunter and camp can get dirty) NFL – does not take much to see how the roll models act and how the game is played. Other video games the goal is to kill the other person in a life like war, not sure World of Warcraft is at the top of the list.

Wow so many different things to say here. First of all I was an avid WOW player. I can tell you from experience that if you let it its very easy to let it suck up your time and your life. Take it from someone that was there and almost allowed it to be a part of destroying my marriage. I say a part because it wasn’t the only reason for problems. There is not anything wrong with WOW and what people say in an online game really shouldn’t matter. The GOP in this case is really stretching they need to stick to real issues. Honestly the only thing I would even be slightly worried about with her and the gaming is that she would be so absorbed in it that she would not be able to do her job effectively but I could care less about how she talks in an online game. This is coming from someone who has been there and done that.

You know what? I play WoW, (I play on Dawnbringer, and I have three toons 85+) I am staunchly conservative, very much a Christian, and dedicated to my kids, 5 of whom are in school, three of whom are home-schooled. I look after my home, my family, and I play WoW with my kids and husband. We have a great time doing this together. I’ve been told we’re all going to hell for it, because it is clearly “of the Devil”, I’ve been told that my husband and I are immature for playing this MMO with our kids. I’ve been told that I am wasting my time.

Well you know what? If we’re immature for playing this with our kids, then I guess we’ll just be immature. If you want to find the Devil in a video game, I’m sure he’ll be glad to meet you there and dominate your poor weak mind there, just as anywhere else. If I am wasting my free time, well it’s my free time to waste, and its none of anyone’s business how I waste my free time, so long as I get my work done, meet my obligations, and do not break the law. If this senator or any candidate finds some peace and enjoyment in playing WoW, or SWTOR, or LOTRO or whatever else, who’s business is it but hers and her family’s?

Lets talk substance, shall we? Where does she stand on labor law? Where does she stand on abortion? The Economy? Radical Islam? What server does she play on so I can go own her hordie orc **** in PVP? Get serious people!!

As a previous WoW player: Most likely she openly discussed who she was. She seems to have a great deal of a big-head. She probably speaks regularly about her real world profession and aspirations. She’s a member of guild. Depending on which one, it can range from a few to the hundreds in membership. Most likely she angered a member who had some connection to Maine. This guy/gal starts taking notes. Or this person knows someone in Maine and invites them to the guild for note taking.

As for oddball statements in the game, it comes with the territory. If you play an assassin in the game you will talk about how much you like to (especially at level 85, that’s a lot of hours there). Liking to poison someone in WoW definitely does not mean you will poison someone in the real world. If everyone were Priests, it would get to be a pretty boring game.

But having broken the WoW addiction myself, my concern is the time she has spent in this game and I guarantee this character is not her first. She has spent a great deal of real life time, quite possibly 6 to 10 hours a day, if she plays into the night. Her statement that she wishes she wasn’t at work and would rather play WoW, is also troubling. That’s real there. That’s how it can take over your life. Even when at work, you’re thinking about tonight… what your next move will be… how to solve a difficult quest. And she’s running for office…

Hate to break this to you, but facebook games count to. Fallout New Vegas may have been a huge hit making multi-millions along with games like WoW. But Farmville blows them away in popularity due to it’s appeal to all ages.

Gaming related but not related to what I’m replying to. Not sure if this is US or world wide, can’t remember, but in 2010, movies made around 9 billion dollars, music made a little above 10 billion dollars, Gaming(including things such as board games I believe) made over 20 billion dollars

Games have higher value then movies or music, as they last longer and provide more bang for the buck.

Games are the new story telling media, some are mindless, some are thought provoking and some have stories that blow away anything in movies. I’m always disappointed when Glenn talks about changing media or using media to get a message across and he never mentions games. In fact he had some guests on that actually alienated the crowd at one time.

The Japanese get the fact you can use them to send a message across, much to my annoyance at getting yet another war or military game that spends more time lecturing me about how war is bad then letting me play.

The western games get the concept that games are interactive and the player can make choices, unfortunately they tend to be Saint or powerhungry blankity blank.
A movie can have a compelling story, and have tough moral questions. A game can have a compelling story, and force YOU to answer tough moral

I’m as conservative as they get and most conservatives do not understand gaming in anyway, shape, or form. They just have a knee jerk reaction to it because it’s all supposed to be mindless violence. Never mind games often have some of the most thought provoking and heart felt stories I’ve ever seen.

I love the game. It takes me away from real life for a while. Much like TV, Books, and other entertainment does for everyone around the world. This just happens to be my escape. I don’t like to watch TV anymore. I haven’t watched television in almost 10 years now. Unless it’s on DVD and I can watch it without commentary or commercials.

Even then, I only watch the things I am interested and I’d rather spend my time actually focusing on something which engages my brain, rather than the brain numbing television set!

Although, I don’t just play the game to “kill” things. The woman describes it as if she would love to do these things in real life. That is not what the game is to me. To me it’s fighting the bad guys, in a fantasy setting, nothing more! And it is fun!

And it sounds like from the woman’s comments that she’s really kinda mean!!!

PS. I never put my gaming ahead of my duties as a mother, wife and my family. My real life responsibilities come first. As with any hobby that is how it should be. I’ve been a gamer for over 15 years now. I’m a generation X’er. I was building websites before it was even cool to own internet.

Seriously, the problem is that WACKOS get ahold of WoW and they just take it too far! Then leave the rest of us good ga

Something else they need to do is make her pay back the money she stole by claiming she was working, when actually, she was playing games, by her own admission.

I play WoW and I’m a Republican.. So the f*** what?!? This is a cheap shot. I’d vote for the democrat simply because of the childishness of the GOP candidate. Millions of people enjoy games, we don’t LIVE a second life through them. To you it may seem that way. This is America, THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS.

Problem is she believes everyone’s “pursuit of happiness” must come at the expense of others. I don’t think she’s ever been a productive person, that’s why she’s running for public office…

What it does show is how lame some of the GOP establishment idiots are. They want to put together an attack ad, and this is the best that they can do? Are they trying to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory ala McCain 2008? They need to get a clue, or at least get some campaign advisers that have either graduated 8th grade or aren’t actually Democrats. Holy cow, are they recruiting political advisers from the dementia ward again?

I’ve been a registered Republican for over 2 decades and this kind of crap is embarrassing.

I’m a little confused by some of the comments on here. Playing an online game don’t seem to be the issue. But the harsh comments about Grover Norquist, John McCain, Teabaggers; is she not supposed to answer to those types of comments, regardless where they were made? Focus on the comments, not the game………….

TheBlaze…get your facts right, it’s “World of Warcraft” not “War of Worcraft”.

This is the same Maine GOP that has (and still is) giving us Olympia Snowe. Of course they won’t make principled arguments rooted in logic and reason, and they certainly won’t fight for conservatism.

But is she a witch, that’s the question.

Exactly my thought. The democraps skewered Christine O’Donnell when she was running for a Delaware Senate seat, when she said “”I dabbled into witchcraft — I never joined a coven. But I did, I did. … I dabbled into witchcraft.” It was an innocent date with an occultist.
Lancowicz knows exactly what she’s doing and saying.

That’s pretty weak. They should have left the game thing alone. If anything they have probably enhanced her votes from the under 30 crowd.
