Teacher Under Fire for Allegedly Telling Student to Remove Pro-Romney T-Shirt & Likening it to KKK Clothing

A high school teacher at Charles Carroll High School in Port Richmond, Philadelphia, is under investigation after allegedly ordering a student to remove a pro-Mitt Romney t-shirt. In addition to purportedly telling the female pupil to take off the clothing, the teacher also supposedly compared the shirt to a Ku Klux Klan outfit.

The student at the center of the story, 16-year-old Samantha Pawlucy, claims that she chose to wear the pink t-shirt for a dress-down day, during which students were invited to select their own clothing. The teacher’s comments, Pawlucy contends, were humiliating, as the geometry instructor reportedly encouraged other students — and teachers — to join in on mocking her.

“I was really embarrassed and shocked. I didn’t think she’d go in the hallway and scream to everyone,” Pawlucy explained in an interview with Philly.com. “It wasn’t scary, but it felt weird.”

In addition to telling the student that Carroll High School is a “Democratic school,” the teacher said that wearing the pro-Romney shirt is similar to the teacher, an African American, wearing a KKK shirt. Pawlucy had decided to wear the shirt after researching the candidates’ stances and landing on Romney as her choice in 2012.

Following the incident, Pawlucy decided to tell school officials — something the student was initially afraid to do. Already, she’s receiving some negative feedback from peers and those opposed to her decision.

“I have some friends that won’t talk to me anymore because of it,” she continued. “Because I told the principal what happened…they’re mad at me.”

During a meeting with the principal and the teacher at the center of the dispute, Pawlucy’s parents attempted to rectify and better understand what unfolded. The teacher, though, apparently defended herself, said that she was joking and inevitably stormed out of the meeting.

An official complaint will be filed by the family with the district on Thursday. According to a Philadelphia School District spokesperson, the teacher has been moved to another classroom, as officials continue to investigate the incident.

  Union rules – I’m sure the NEA is circling the wagons around this teacher. Talk about thuggery at work! The teacher is allowed to bully a student expressing a political opinion, but the teacher hides behind the cloak of “privacy” and is kept on the payroll thanks to tenure.   @SY212: He/she will never be fired. He/she belongs to a UNION. This “Teacher” will be scolded and maybe even transferred to another school BUT can never be fired. Even though this act is tantamount to bullying, especially when the teacher asked the other students to join in.   When I went to school, students were encouraged to think for themselves. To express ideas, even though the teacher didn’t agree, we were free to air them. Now, these UNION HACK TEACHERS want only the Communist idea of , “Tow my line”. They stiffle freedom of thought and student creativity in favor of the UNION’S directive as to how students should think. (And of course, that’s Democrat)

  I doubt very much a male math teacher would be bothered…first because he is male and second math tends toward the calmer, more logical spock-like person.   You are so right. I have 3 boys in public school. One is a senior and one a sophmore. I will be sooooo glad when they are all graduated. The school system is the one that is pouring this… liberal/politically correct bullcrap to our children, and when we try to teach our kids to stand up for their beliefs and or morals we are called racist and or extremeist.   I have seven kids. The last four were home schooled. I saw the damage the school system was causing over fifteen years ago. Guess what – When compared to their counterparts — they are more intelligent, better informed, all have good jobs, and are successful. Oh – and they all have a deep understanding of God – something that was also part of home schooling.

  I think the public schools have always been run by the government, so they know where our kids are, and they can have them learn what the government wants them to learn. The public high school for my area had many public rallies for Obama in 2008, and the teachers wore all kinds of Obama paraphernalia, etc. They do not teach any kind of tolerance for other points of view at all. It was very uncomfortable to be a mom to a student there, when our beliefs differed so much from the public school’s point of view. Previous to this, my son did his schooling at home for 2 years through a public charter school. That was the best! And, he had tons of free time to meet other kids that did their schooling at home. I personally think that all kids should be taught at home, like in the olden days, before public schools took over everyone’s lives, trying to control how everyone thinks, and acts.

  We already know whoever it is, it’s one of the “beautiful people” just waiting for them to say its someone Black. NOT RACISTS! But, the girl is white so its one or maybe both possibilities: 1.) It’s Black, 2) It’s Male If it its both, its a double whammy, intimidating a girl, being a representative of your school and influencing the kids view of how others will feel.

Follow this to its natural conclusion, wherever it may lead. It’s past time that teachers acting out against their students personal philosophies be held to account. We need to get back to teaching HOW to think, not WHAT to think.
