Gay Boy Scout Denied Eagle Award Because of His Sexuality

The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) is known for its controversial stance on homosexuality. In July, the organization announced that it plans to continue its ban on gay membership after a two-year review of the contentious policy.
This obviously did little to redeem the BSA in the eyes of gay rights activists, who believe that its Christian-based views are discriminatory and unacceptable. And new Allegations coming from Ryan Andresen, a scout for the past 12 years who is claiming his homosexuality is preventing him from participating in the BSA, will likely add fuel to the proverbial fire.
Ryan is claiming that, despite more than a decade of service in the scouts, he is being denied the group’s highest honor — the Eagle Award — because he is gay. The San Francisco resident says that he recently finished an extensive service project that was required in order for him to receive the award, however his troop leader is allegedly refusing to grant him the honor.
“He said he can’t because Ryan said he is gay,” explained Karen Andresen, the boy’s mother.
Interestingly, Ryan claims that his scoutmaster has known about his sexual orientation for quite some time. In fact, he says that it was a point of discussion and that the local leader told him that they would “get by the gay thing.” Ryan told Yahoo! News that he is devastated by the refusal to grant the award.
“It was by far the biggest goal of my life,” he told Yahoo! News. “It’s totally devastating.”
Troop 212′s leaders did not respond to requests by media, but a national spokesperson for the BSA did put out a statement regarding the matter. Deron Smith, an official representative for the group, said that Ryan contributed to the current situation by openly stating that he is opposed to the BSA’s religious stance.
“Recently, a Scout proactively notified his unit leadership and Eagle Scout Counselor that he does not agree to Scouting’s principle of ‘Duty to God’ and does not meet Scouting’s membership standard on sexual orientation,” smith wrote to Yahoo! News. “While the BSA did not proactively ask for this information, based on his statements and after discussion with his family he is being informed that he is no longer eligible for membership in Scouting.”
Clearly, there’s an issue here of free speech and religious practice on behalf of both Ryan and the organization. While some may disagree with the BSA’s actions, the group maintains a strong allegiance to faith and, thus, opposes gay membership. As far as Ryan goes, some will argue that he is merely remaining true to himself and that he should reserve the right to do so. There’s no easy answer on either front, as the situation is certainly a complicated one.

Regardless, Ryan’s mother, Karen, is working diligently to urge local leaders to overturn the decision. The scout only has a few days remaining until his 18th birthday — the cut-off point by which he must earn his Eagle badge. She has launched a petition in support of her son that has already brought in more than 133,000 signatories. On the web site for the petition, she wrote, in part:
It hurts me so much to watch Ryan suffer for being who he is, because to me, he’s perfect. Ryan has worked for nearly 12 years to become an Eagle Scout, and nothing would make him more proud than earning that well-deserved distinction. I hope that if enough people come together, we can convince my son’s troop leaders to help him feel proud of who he is and all he’s accomplished.
“Citizenship in the Community,” a merit badge earned, means standing up for what is right, and I am proud of Ryan for doing just that. Will you stand with him too, and join this campaign?
“I’m so disappointed and confused,” Ryan said of his scoutmaster. “I know he isn’t a person who hates gay people, but I never thought he would do something like this.”
What do you think about this scenario? Let us know in the comments section, below.

They only mandate that Scouts MUST believe in God, but they do not dictate which God. There are Hindu, Muslim, Christian, and Jewish Boy Scout organizations.

If the gay community really felt so strongly about this then they should start their own gay scouting organization. Call them the woodland fairys or somthing.

That’s too bad. If homosexuals want to join an organizxation in order to have opportunities to engage in perversions with the same sex, they’re free to start their own group. So are those who engage in beastiality.
Whether it’s joining the priesthood, the Boy Scouts or any all male groups, homosexuals do so in order to pursue their perversions. They have no interest in the organizations themselves.
Homosexuals especially are eager to infect groups where contact with young boys is available to them, because they can use their positions and maturity to flim flam children into allowing themselves to become victims of perverted sexual abuse. They don’t particularyly prefer young boys, it’s just that they find it so much easier to scam them and trick them or use their positions over them than it is to do the same with men.
That’s why they’re particularly eager to horn their way into the Boy Scouts.
And as for boys like the above, their primary purpose to join is to increase their opportunities to find sex partners as well. That’s first and foremost with them. It’s not learning how to tie knots. What they really need is intense psychotherpy to rid themselves of their mental disorders so they can lead normal lives.

It’s not often that you see people honest enough to give up an earned accomplishment when they recognize that they no longer deserve it. Christian morality is deeply ingrained in the Boyscout code and in it’s oath. This means that homosexuals do NOT qualify to be Boy Scouts, and certainly not Eagle scouts.
It’s good to see that these former Eagle Scouts possess the integrity to honor their oath, and give up these awards when they no longer deserve them.
If they really feel strongly about it they should start their own Gay scouting organization.

UCC, Episcopals, and other Christian denominations have accepted homosexuality into their flocks. So to say it goes against Christian teaching is another lie, nor is the BSA a Christian organization, they only require a belief in a higher power.
To suck on the teat of Conservative Christian donors the BSA has abandoned their values. The are now an anti-American hate group. That is way straight Eagle Scouts are returning their badges.

Also those same posters are completely ignorant or willfully overlook the bible’s condemnation of homosexuality. I don’t know how much clearer the bible could make it. Some may feel there is nothing wrong with homosexuality and that is fine; that is their choice. However, those with opposing views have the same right to reject that view. If you go to church and accept those who allow actively practice homosexual actions then that is not a Christian church. However, you are free to worship in any manner your heart desires but have the decency not to claim you are something which you are not.

Well at least you are consistent in your inability to think critically. Itt’s patently obvious to any reasonable person that you have lost your argument, (hence the twisting of facts), and you have certainly lost it on moral grounds.
The Boy Scouts are still going strong despite the hatred and angst produced by you and your peers. And I’m sure they will continue to do so.
You should learn to relax about things like this. Stop worrying what other people are doing, and start considering yourself. If an organization is in your mind hateful bigots then it stands to reason that in the passage of time they will be seen as such and disapear. No protests, no screaming and crying is necessary. If however it is a good and honorable organization as I think it is, then it’ll likely be around for a long time.
And if that is the case you need to man up and admit you’re wrong.
In the meantime just relax, and read a few books on critical thinking. It’ll make you a better person.

Actually it’s not a lie. Homosexuality DOES go against Christian teaching. The reason these denominations have accepted it is because that’s what they are, denominations. Any “church” that puts men’s creeds/beliefs above God’s is not a Christian church it is a man made church. So I’m not surprised when denominations do this because they have already said that the Bible is not good enough, that they have to add their own ideals and beliefs.

The lesson here is this individual needs to learn how to read the fine print and not rock the boat if he doesn’t like what he sees.

For me, heterosexuality was never a choice. When I was five, I was checking out the girls on the monkey bars. It was instinct, there was no choice. No amount of debate, reasoning or prayer could make me choose to be gay because I am not gay. Sexuality is not a choice.

What you want to convey as overt bigotry is nothing more than maintaining policies that prevent disease-ridden homosexuals from infecting our chilodren.
Homosexuals are not only afflicted with mental illness, they carry an abundance of various germs and viruses which are the result of engaging in unnatural sexual practices that utilize parts of the body that are designed SOLELY for eliminating waste.
As just ONE example, 85% of ALL syphilis cases are within the homosexual community. There are many others.

This is not the whole story.

Posted on October 5, 2012 at 1:41pmI think it has to do with what they mean by “I’m gay”. Does it mean you are attracted to the same sex or does it mean you are engaging in immoral acts with the same sex? I would think that a heterosexual scout could be denied awards for engaging in immoral acts with the opposite sex (were dealing with teenagers, not married). This is all assuming that “morally straight” means no sex outside of marriage.

Don’t think that he’s advertising it either. A person saying he or she is gay does not mean that they are advertising their sex life any more than a straight person who says they are straight or that they have a “crush” on some girl or something. Maybe you already knew that but I see the “advertising” comments way too often, and it’s a huge double standard.
And those married gays, they’re either still gay or they weren’t gay to begin with. Or they are bisexual, which exists, this one study proved it conclusively.

Your argument does not hold.
Being ‘gay’ (practicing or not) is immoral; being ‘hetero’ (practicing only in marriage) is not. This kid admitted to being of a deviant mindset; end of story.

Posted on October 5, 2012 at 10:14amQuite true. The Eagle Service Project is only one of the requirements necessary to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. You must also collect the requisite Merit Badges, describe the parts of the Scout badge and what they represent, and you must recite and pledge to live by the Scout Oath, Law and Motto (“Be Prepared!”). All of these things are done before an Eagle Board of Review, and those individuals decide whether or not all the requirements have been met to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout.
Usually, if you can do all these things, the Board will recommend you to the National Scouting Association to receive the award. The choice this young man made to openly defy his support for the Scout Oath disqualifies him from any further participation in the Boy Scouts of America – either as a Scout or a Leader. Thus he has chosen to disqualify himself.

Some of the required merit badges are required to advance from rank to rank, long before prepping for the Eagle rank. Once the rank of Life is achieved, they can do the Eagle project, so the project could actually be the very 1st they they do at that point, and all of the remaining merit badges and such can be earned after doing the project.

Did the BS of America expect him to quit once he realized he was gay? Or, maybe they just wanted him to keep him mouth shut about it (you know, like Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell). The BS of America are doing themselves and their members a huge disservice by not allowing gays to openly be members of their organization. Although I really wanted to let my son join the Scouts, I thought about how I was going to explain to him when he got older how I knowingly let him join an organization that discriminated against a population of society. Instead, I let him join another organization that fully embraces all people, and he has grown to be a very accepting and tolerant young man. For 12 years this boy has had to raise his right hand and recite this. He knows that it means. Yes there are many community service oriented merit badges and patches and work projects you must do. BUT, the “morally straight” phrase in the Boy Scout Oath applies to behavior – sexual or otherwise. IF this boy has just kept his mouth shut until after his Eagle Council, he would have his Eagle. His Scout Master obviously knew and rightly decided to no say anything as long as the boy did not publicly announce.
From the jest of the article, it seems the boy took it upon himself to announce that he was gay not just wink wink nudge nudge let the Scout Master know but keep it quiet. Once he came out of the closet publicly to the entire Troop and Eagle Council…he was DONE!! Especially when he also came out AGAINST the “duty to God” part of the oath as well. He basically was denied his Eagle because for the last 12 years, or since he thought himself gay, he has been LYING when taking his oath! LYING is cause for removal from the Troop!

Posted on October 5, 2012 at 10:09amSOSORRYFORYOU, The homosexual attacks by scout leaders started to rear it’s ugly head more and more back in the ’70s and ’80s. The Scouts had to take some drastic measures and unlike the Catholic Church when caught up in the same mess, ruled that known homosexuals would not be allowed in the organization. The Boy Scouts was being sued almost out of existence back then because of the sexual attacks on young boys. At Scout camps where hardened shelters are erected, they install what are called Adirondacks. These are small buildings with four built in bunks with two on each side. The entire front is a canvas curtain that is weighted in spots. They cannot have enclosed structures where a scout can be locked in available to his attacker. All new cabins and larger structures must have doors that open outwards only and with lock sets that can open from within at all times. Older structures are still being retro-fitted. I’ve helped install some of them. This is what homosexuality has done to scouting.

When he realized that his preference of sexual partners was incompatible with the Scouts, he had a choice. He knew their stance on homosexuality and he chose to parade it around anyway. He should have quit. Now he’s just being a whiny wuss because he’s not getting a prize from a PRIVATE ORGANIZATION that has every right to uphold its values. Why don’t the gays form their own private scouting organization and just leave this institution alone? Why do they have to go and screw everything up for everybody else? Or is more fun for them to make a scene anytime someone doesn’t approve of their deviant sex choices?

Look at ancient Greece and Rome. When homosexuality became accepted and rampant was when they declined and disintegrated. It is the last sign of a dying society.
Scripture says in the last days they will call evil good and good evil. Abortion is choice, gay is normal, next LAMBDA will be an acceptable baby sitting service.

Posted on October 5, 2012 at 9:20amThe Boy Scouts of America (BSA) is known for its controversial stance on homosexuality.
There is nothing controversial about it. A scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent.
The BSA backs natural law and homosexuality is a violation of that law. Natural law promotes life, creation, procreation, continuation of the species, etc. Nothing in the act of homosexuality promotes these characteristics.
The only thing that is controversial is that people accept a perversion as an appropriate act.
If you think people are offended now, wait till they cower before God knowing their guilt at Judgement Day. We all have our faults and imperfections. No one is perfect. However, certain acts are much more grevious in the eyes of God than others. And, no scout can stand up and proclaim to rever God (i.e., Reverent) when Gods moral law has been violated (i.e., thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is an abomination; and, if ye love me, keep my commandments).

I don’t know where you got that idea, but the only sin that is unforgivable is refusing to accept Christ, and that’s because a person makes the choice to not accept Him, and at that point He cannot save you because you refused his help. He wants to, but you said “no thanks.” All sin is sin, and all sin is equal in the eyes of God. Stop living in the Old Testament. God forgives all sin through Christ who saved us, there aren’t some sins where God says “Oh, nevermind you’re still going to Hell.” We are called to “Go and sin no more” but that doesn’t mean if you still sin (and you WILL still sin), that your salvation is rescinded. Of course we don’t know what this kid’s beliefs are, but it is not yours to assume or judge.

Nowhere in the Bible does it tell us not to assume or judge. Why this mindset is still being propagated is beyond me.
If we are not to judge, then I guess we all should have stayed home when Hitler was stomping through Europe. If we are not to judge, what in the world do we have courts for? If we are not to judge, why did Jethro advise Moses to appoint lower judges and leave the big cases for himself?
The Bible clearly tells us to judge, but to first take the plank out of our own eye ‘before’ we attempt take the speck from our brother’s, and that we will be judged by the same measure that we judge others. So don’t be overly harsh.

Just as we have to follow the laws of this nation, members agree to follow the rules of the organization. They do not have the right to make the organization as a whole bend to the desires of the few.
Sexuality in any form has nothing to do with scouting, and even heterosexual scout who shoots his mouth off about the girls that he has had relations with, will likely find himself outside looking in. Had this kid kept his mouth closed and maintained some quiet dignity he would have had no problem earning his Eagle, and staying in the scouts. That is the problem with so many gays, they just have to live their lives vicariously through their sexuality, and being so boisterous about it.

She said that his decision would cost him eternally. I’m not saying that God tolerates homosexuality, but we’re all sent to this earth with different struggles and weaknesses. God knows that. God designed it that way. She’s basically saying that his homosexuality means he’s going to hell. It’s not the place of man to judge whether or not the consequence of someone’s actions means eternal damnation. That’s for God and God alone. You can judge whether or not a person is someone you should spend a lot of time with, but to say that someone’s weakness will “cost them eternally” is a very bold statement, and it may or may not be true. That’s for God to determine. The best thing we can do for people like that is to love them. That’s what we are told to do.

Sorry, it’s in the Bible whether you like it or not. You can warn in a loving way but don’t forget, Jesus asked the Pharisees how they were going to flee the wrath of God. if you do not agree to the precepts of an organization why would you join it?
it would be akin to me joining the democratic party while believing in God, the sanctity of life, free will and not mob thuggery—just not happening!

Posted on October 5, 2012 at 9:11amYup! As an Assistant Scoutmaster for 12+ years “back when” and a dad who had 2 boys go thru his Troop and become Eagle Scouts, I can say this from personal experience: A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, CLEAN and REVERENT.
1. This child should have been dropped from the ranks early.
2. If a person wishes to pursue the homosexual (it is NOT “gay”) lifestyle..well so be it. That is between him and God, to whom he will later answer.
3. The Scouts is a PRIVATE org and should have the RIGHT to accept whom they please….as do..say..The Freemasons…for one example.

Posted on October 5, 2012 at 9:00amRules are rules and the Scoutmaster knew that. HE is the person that should be taking the heat, by deceiving this boy and leading him on.

Posted on October 5, 2012 at 9:07amand what would the scout master do? ask his scout his sexual orientation??
in our legal world, he would have been sued!
heck, the military can’t even question a soldier’s sexual orientation!
the Boy Scouts have a right to their own views, and I’m sure they are publicly known.

Posted on October 5, 2012 at 9:12amHow is it deceiving the boy? Each meeting, when I was in scouts (made Eagle), we repeated the pledge which included the phrase “morally straight”. If the kid was confused then his parents or teachers are to blame by not comprehending basic English.
Bottom line is that if you want to advance in any organization, you have to toe the line or leave.

Posted on October 5, 2012 at 9:13amRead the statement from BSA again. The scout recently went to the scoutmaster and the Eagle scout counselor and notified them that he does not meet their requirements for membership, and that he doesn’t agree with their position on faith. He forced their hand. He made a tactical error, and he is learning a valuable lesson.

He forced their hand, and they responded. Lesson learned scout.

Posted on October 5, 2012 at 10:13am“Interestingly, Ryan claims that his scoutmaster has known about his sexual orientation for quite some time. In fact, he says that it was a point of discussion and that the local leader told him that they would “get by the gay thing.”
———————————————
Hey, I’m just going by what the boy said, he could be lying, but other people seemed to have known the boy was gay, for quite a while. How the scoutmaster didn’t know, maybe he doesn’t live in the same community? Did the scoutmaster NEVER have discussions with the mother? She seems to be out-spoken about her son’s gayness, there’s no doubt it has come up before, IMO.
