October Surprise: Unemployment Drops to 7.8% — But Skepticism Abounds
- Unemployment drops to 44-month low to 7.8%
- However, many are questioning the numbers due to “contradictory data points” such as the total employment level soaring but the low net number
- Government says 873K people found work — but reports only 114K new jobs were added
- Former GE CEO alleged fraud, sending a tweet saying “these Chicago guys will do anything”
- Popular finance blog Zero Hedge even called it a “preelection ‘massaging’ farce”
In what will be one of the most influential jobs reports of the election season, unemployment fell from 8.1% to 7.8% in September, dropping below 8 percent for the first time in nearly four years. The private sector added 114,000 new jobs in September.
While another report will be released three days before the election, Friday’s report is the one that will provide the bulk of material on the campaign trail during the election’s crucial final month.
The numbers, however, are perplexing to CNBC, which notes that there are some oddities:
The report presented a slew of contradictory data points, with the total employment level soaring despite the low net number.
The falling jobless rate had been a function as much of the continued shrinking in the labor force as it was an increase in new positions.
But the government said the total number of jobs employed surged by 873,000, the highest one-month jump in 29 years. The total of unemployed people tumbled by 456,000.
The labor force participation rate, which reflects those working as well as looking for work, edged higher to 63.6 percent but remained around 30-year lows. The total labor force grew by 418,000, possibly accounting for the relatively modest net level of job growth.
Economists were expecting 113,000 more jobs and the rate to rise to 8.2 percent. Last month saw 142,000 new jobs as the rate dropped from 8.3 percent in July.
Those oddities have not gone unnoticed. Finanical guru Jack Welch sent a tweet alleging the numbers were politically motivated:
Popular finance blog Zero Hedge echoed that sentiment, calling it a “complete preelection ‘massaging’ farce.”
So what’s going on?
As Business insider notes, there are actually two jobs surveys released every month: “There’s the Establishment Non-Farm Payrolls report, which surveys businesses, and the household survey, which surveys households, the latter of which is always more volatile.”
And according to that latter survey, there were 873K people who found jobs, and the unemployment rate fell. However, according to the former survey, Zero Hedge says, only 114,000 new jobs were added. And that’s where the discrepancy is in the report: While one survey asking households claims 873K became employed the businesses survey reports only an increase in 114K new ones. Both numbers, you might notice, are used in the final reporting.
So the question remains: Where did all the jobs come from if only 114K new ones were added?
Considering this, MSNBC host Joe Scarborough was baffled, and fellow panelist Willie Geist notes that rate should have been around 8.1%:
Ed Butowsky of Chapwood Capital Investment shared similar concerns on Fox Business Channel:
The report released in September detailing August’s numbers showed an unemployment drop, too, from 8.3 percent to 8.1 percent. But while the numbers indicated a decrease, the news wasn’t that good. Our own Becket Adams explained at the time:
U.S. employers added only 96,000 jobs last month and the unemployment rate fell to 8.1 percent from 8.3 percent in July, the Bureau of Labor Statistics announced Friday morning.
What’s going on here? Is this a hopeful sign for the economy and the U.S. workforce? Well, not exactly.
First, it needs to be noted that unemployment fell only because more people left the workforce. Actually, a lot of people dropped out.
“However, those numbers were revised higher, with the Labor Department putting July’s number at 181,000 from the previously reported 141,000 and August up from an originally reported 96,000,” CNBC says. In short: the Labor Department said upon further review, those numbers were even better.
Despite Friday’s numbers, however, the Associated Press notes that many of the jobs added last month were part time. The number of people with part-time jobs who wanted full-time work rose 7.5 percent to 8.6 million.
Mitt Romney was quick to respond, saying “This is not what a real recovery looks like” and that if not for all those who have dropped out of the workforce, “the real unemployment rate would be closer to 11%.”
His full statement is below:
“This is not what a real recovery looks like. We created fewer jobs in September than in August, and fewer jobs in August than in July, and we’ve lost over 600,000 manufacturing jobs since President Obama took office. If not for all the people who have simply dropped out of the labor force, the real unemployment rate would be closer to 11%. The results of President Obama’s failed policies are staggering – 23 million Americans struggling for work, nearly one in six living in poverty and 47 million people dependent on food stamps to feed themselves and their families. The choice in this election is clear. Under President Obama, we’ll get another four years like the last four years. If I’m elected, we will have a real recovery with pro-growth policies that will create 12 million new jobs and rising incomes for everyone.”
Jobs and the economy has become a central figure of the election, with Romney trying to rally support by pointing out Barack Obama’s poor economic record over the last four years.
Friday’s numbers, however, could offer Obama a retort, especially considering the new level matches its level in January 2009 when President Barack Obama took office.
But they are also raising plenty of questions.
UPDATE I:
CNBC confronted Labor Sec. Hilda Solis over the allegations the numbers were “fixed.” Get her full reaction here.
Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.) backed Welch’s accusation, saying “Chicago style politics is at work here.”
UPDATE II:
Columnist Conn Carroll has a good explanation of the numbers. He says it’s unlikely the numbers were cooked, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t fishy:
While it is highly improbable that BLS conspired to cook the books, there is still a huge 756,000 job gap between the number of jobs employers told the Labor Department they created in September (114k), and the number of Americans who told the labor department that they got new jobs (873k). As the chart below shows, these two numbers never match up perfectly, but this month’s gap, particularly the spike in Americans saying they found jobs, is striking:
While you normally hear the Employer survey number in headlines, it actually has nothing to do with the unemployment rate that also gets reported. The Household survey controls that. And the driving reason the unemployment rate fell from 8.1 percent in August to 7.8 percent in September, is because BLS claims almost 1 million Americans found jobs last month.A million new jobs in a month? Does that sound anything like the economy you and your neighbors are living in?
The Associated Press contributed to this report. This is a breaking story. Updates will be added.

Liars figure and figures lie
It is Un-American to lie to the American people who are really hurting so you can get back in office to further destroy their lives. Time for a change, not more of the same
About 100,000 new jobs are needed each month just to keep up with the growth of the working-age population. Twice as many are typically needed on a consistent basis to bring unemployment down rapidly. And 114k does not make the unemployment rate fall 0.3%, complete BS and the books have been burnt beyond recognition to make this happen.

Does it mean that if Obama wins in November, you are going to start shooting people? Does it mean you are going to gather a militia and start an armed rebellion? Or is it a metaphorical War you’re talking about? “War” in the sense of total political opposition, no holds barred? Or will you arm yourself and start blasting away at anyone you think looks like they may have voted for Obama? Please give the rest of us some details. Thanks in advance.

(Hey, I wonder if 0bamakkkare covers **** kickings?) Posted on October 5, 2012 at 11:18amENCINOM/MONICNE/SLEAZY HIPPO/ad nauseum….Everyone would be cheering a lower unemployment rate if the reality matched the numbers from Obama’s Labor department. Something is clearly amiss here. Manufacturing jobs are down. GDP almost stalled. The underemployment rate the biggest since WWII. A deluge of part time jobs in this latest report. Salaries down. Just last month we only added 96,000 jobs to the deficit of jobs that Obama still hasn’t made up while 386,000 people left the workforce entirely..and this was a pattern seen over the last 3 months at least.
The 7.8% number is bogus..it stinks to high heaven. The reality doesnt’ match the number. Hilda Solis has a vested interest in seeing Barack Obama relected and what a coincidence..Obama is shamed in the first debate and lo and behold…a historic reduction in the unemployment rate a few days later.

Obama Puts Far-Left Erica Groshen In Key Labor Post
By BILL WILSON
Posted 07/18/2012 06:37 PM ET
Five months ago Barack Obama nominated union backer, liberal economist and Federal Reserve bureaucrat Erica Groshen to lead the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) — the agency best known for calculating the nation’s unemployment rate each month.
Obviously Groshen’s nomination was yet another sop to organized labor — which doled out big dollars and major manpower to help elect Obama in 2008 (and which has already been rewarded handsomely for its efforts).
It was also yet another endorsement of the failed Keynesian interventionism that Obama has continued to foist on our private sector ever since he was elected — with disastrous consequences for our nation’s economy.
But this particular appointment represents much more than just another lifetime left winger being tapped by Obama to fill a lofty taxpayer-funded perch. For starters, Groshen’s background is more explicitly linked to overt anti-American ideologies than any Obama appointee since his infamous “green jobs czar” Van Jones.
Such radical ideological moorings are cause for real concern given that Groshen is being asked to preside over an agency where the inviolability of hard, methodologically obtained data — not the specter of ideological influence — is vital to maintaining institutional neutrality and credibility.

The math doesn’t work, by my accounting an increase of 460,000 net jobs is needed for it to drop the unemployment rate to 7.8. And this allows for a flat workforce participation rate.
If true, this is the biggest monthly jump in employment in the last 29 years … wow … in less than 48 hours after the crash and burn debate.
So the BLS says 870 thousand jobs added, and employers report 114 thousand. The workforce increased by 415 thousand. So let’s see … BLS says there are 800% more jobs than was expected. I wish it were true. Of course the next report will come out after the election.

I knew when his behind was kicked good the other night, he and his choom gang would come up with a few little ditties to fool the fools and idiots out there.
This is just the beginning of what we can expect in the next month. It amazes me, those who will lie down and accept this krap thinking they will still get theirs.. If o makes it, we’ll be like Greece. And those with nothing, will have less than nothing, because we’ll all be begging for food.

It’s so obvious what’s going on here. The past two months, economists have said that the unemployment rate will rise due to the weak numbers. Both times they were wrong. There is some heavy manipulating going on here.

Posted on October 5, 2012 at 11:28amRick Santelli on CNBC predicted it almost to the decimal point. He said that the unemployment rate would miraculously fall to 7.9% in the jobs report leading up to the election. The number doesn’t match the reality…how can you have a lower unemployment rate when three times the amout of people have given up looking for work entirely than have actually found work? Better yet..most of the jobs on this report are part time jobs. No…something really stinks with this and I hope congress steps in to expose Solis’ corruption.

Posted on October 5, 2012 at 8:47amThe Useful Idiots and morons may be happy today, but just about everyone else knows this report is bogus. Most well known economists were expecting a tick up in the number, not down. Our government munipulates and distorts the numbers to deceive the electorate. Don’t get angry progressives, I know the Republicans would do the same thing if they were in control. But I am sick and tired of our government treating the people like they do in third world countries or communist countries. If you accept this behavior now, it will never get better.

Posted on October 5, 2012 at 9:01amRight on. The math in no way possible adds up. With more people going on unemployment every week than actually finding employment every week, the numbers just ain’t there. Even if the people who ran out of unemployment benefits is factored in, that .4% drop would still be next to impossible.

Posted on October 5, 2012 at 8:41amThe fact of the matter is that the size of the American labor force hasn’t been this low since 1980. The 99 weeks of unemployment were conveniently set to expire just before the election, in order to make the unemployment rate appear to be decreasing, despite the fact that real unemployment rate is in the upper teens. The American people are not stupid, we all know people who are unemployed, if not ourselves. The number could be 4%, you still wouldn’t convince Americans that all is well with the American economy.

Furthermore, explain the divergence between u3 and u6. Even better, look at the part time component of participation rate now vs historically and recalc the numbers on a time series basis on FT only.

If unemployment was sitting at 12 million unemployed than the unemployment percentage would be .06% that would be quite amazing because that number is economically impossible. Why you as? Because anyone who has taken any economic class would know that 0% unemployment is actually 4.5% because of people in transition from one job to another. So the numbers you pulled out of your **** to protect your dear leader is complete bull crap.

Posted on October 5, 2012 at 3:10pmHow is it they can give a report like this when employers don’t even send in their quarterly employment reports for the last quarter (july thru Sept) until the end of October? It would be impossible to give any accurate report without the reporting of ALL employers to their individual states who would in turn report to the federal government. Which means it would probable take a month after the quarterly reports for the government to get the fact and figures. WHAT A CROCK OF LIES…. where do they get their felonious figures from? Harry Reid? or Pelosi?
