Jack Welch Refuses to Back Down on Unemployment Numbers in Fiery Exchange With Chris Matthews

Jack Welch Refuses to Back Down on Unemployment Numbers in Fiery Debate With Chris Matthews

(MSNBC)

In a heated debate with MSNBC’s Chris Matthews, former General Electric CEO Jack Welch doubled-down on his claim that the Bureau of Labor Statistics survey released Friday, which showed a spike in employment and a drop in the unemployment metric from 8.1 percent to 7.8 percent, is bogus.

Welch explained his rationale to the MSNBC host:

“We had 600,000 government jobs added in the last two months. We had 873,00 jobs by a household survey — which is a total estimate — from 50,000 phone calls. Of those, 600,000 were temporary workers. Chris, these numbers are all a series of assumptions. Tons of assumptions. And it just seems somewhat coincidental that the month before the election, the numbers go one-tenth of a point below where the president started. Although, I don’t see anything in the economy that says these surges are true.”

When Matthews asked him if he had any evidence to prove his assertion correct, Welch admitted that he did not.

“I have no evidence to prove that, I just raise the question,” he said.

“But you didn’t raise the question,” Matthews shot back.

“Did you talk to any economist or any people in the national income accounting world that understood how these numbers are put together before you accuse these ‘Chicago guys’ of changing the numbers?” the host asked.

Welch then repeated his position that the unemployment numbers were generated based on a “series of wild assumptions.”
Matthews then asked if he wanted to take back his accusation that the numbers were intentionally fudged.

“No,” Welch said defiantly. As Matthews grew frustrated with his guests defiance, he accused Welch of irresponsibly alleging wrongdoing by the president of the United States without probable cause. At this, Welch laughed — literally.

Jack Welch Refuses to Back Down on Unemployment Numbers in Fiery Debate With Chris Matthews

(MSNBC)

“It’s not funny, Jack…You’re talking about the President of the United States playing with the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ numbers. This is Nixon stuff. This is what Nixon said back in the old days,” Matthews said.

“Chris, don’t lose it now,” Welch said.

“I’m not losing it. Look at my face. I’m not losing it,” Matthews said.

“Jack, do you want to take back the charge that there was corruption here,” Matthews asked again, getting the same answer.

“You don’t think it’s coincidental that we’ve got the biggest surge since 1983 in the jobs surge? Come on, Chris,” Welch said, refusing to back down. “It’s a six percent improvement in employment in two months…The numbers don’t jibe.”

He continued: “These numbers defy logic. They defy logic. We do not have a 4 to 5 percent booming economy with 873,000 people added. I mean, stop it, Chris. On the face of it, we don’t have this GDP. I love you, but you can’t get there.”

Matthews tried one more time to get Welch to walk his statement back, but it was useless. However, the guest did admit again that he has no “evidence whatsoever” of “corruption.”

Welch said he was just “raising the question for some good analysts to go look at.”

This is surprising since the new CEO of General Electric is in obummers pocket. Too bad this guy is still not the CEO. A lot of gangsters couldn’t do what our commie in chief has done. I don’t believe for a minute that these numbers were not fixed, who are we going to have investigate “Eric Holder” and the DOJ. I sincerely doubt it.

No, if you listen to Rush explain it, when they can no longer collect benefits they are just erased from the system and no longer counted by BLM on the U3, which is what they normally release, but several analysts have said that’s not what they released this time and I haven’t had a chance to look into it.

Welch (GE ex-CEO) and Langone (Home Depot ex-CEO) were successful in their career but they left office in disgrace. They blame this on the Liberal elite and media. Even to this day they carry this baggage. They are channeling that anger on Obama. It is only making them look bad.

These folks are head strong folks, they will never change. Feel bad for them. These sorts of petty anger only kills a human being slowly.

If obama wants to look good he needs to send those that want to work to Oklahoma, State unemployment is 6.4% and here in S Oklahoma ours is 3.9%. Every store in town has a sign up looking for help. Solo Cup company has a permanent sign out at the enterance. You should see the jobs listing on our local Sunday paper. You would think it was a listing for Oklahoma City.

Ever notice how our lefty trolls never manage to address the question? All they can do is attack the credibility of Welch. They can’t explain how the unemployment shift is even possible. Far as I’m concerned it wouldn’t matter if the question was being raised by a hobo on crack. The question itself is a good one. How in the world does the unemployment rate magically drop .4% in one month? We haven’t had that since the Regan recovery years, you know… when we had yearly GDP growth of around 5%. We’re not doing quite as well now. As in, not even 1/3rd that growth. Im not saying I’m sure it’s corruption but it is petty damn convenient, one month out of election day. Pretty suspicious.

An Independent Voter and Thinker would say that YES the numbers were cooked. Any person with 2 functioning brain cells understands that if in August 113,000 jobs were created and the rate stayed at 8.2 and in September 114,000 jobs were created the rate cannot possibly drop to 7.8. And on your comments about Jack Welch as CEO

The debate was tanked on purpose. He knew what the jobs #’s were going to be because he told them what they had to be! Then he slouched the debate for 3 reasons: 1 – he doesn’t give Romney the chance to defend the BS things from his ads, 2 – he backs off so he doesn’t put his foot in his mouth by inadvertently revealing his master plan of socialism like he often does from time to time unscripted, and 3 – He stands to gain more points overall from the #’s than he would by out debating Romney. Also he reduces his overall unscripted exposure by 1 debate. Next debate he comes out aggressive…….I’m still trying to figure out how he can get away with this whole WARN Act bypass… It can’t be anymore clear that the administration is telling a private company to break the law for political gain/favors and to ad insult to injury , when they get sued for not sending the pink slips and breaking the law, the administration is gonna pay for it out our pockets…. REALLY can you get anymore criminal…. and it s on the front page of every paper…….talk about transparent!! what can we the people do to STOP this now…( and I dont mean just vote him out) somehow Lockheed Martin should have to send those slips out… how do we make that happen.

I wish a news story from Burlington Iowa GE plant would go national. Wages cut in half. Workers qualify for aid now. Union attempt barely failed after fear tactics and voting rules appeals. GE garnered millions from local cities and State of Iowa to “help” them decide to not close and move rest of factory to Mexico. GE is definitely NOT the GE of old. And to think GE CEO Jeffrey Immelt is head of Obama’s Jobs Council and is promoting jobs in China! Even GE brass at this plant claimed this story could be a big black eye for Obama and his GE adviser, GE CEO, Jeffrey Immelt.

The monthly Jobs numbers are based on Current Employment Statistics and the Unemployment rate is based on Current Population Survey. Overtime both of these numbers converge. Even the former Bush-Appointed BLS Head said “It’s Impossible To Manipulate Labor Survey Data”. Kiddo, you have a lot to learn.

Welch is a stupid to carry this old baggage around and say silly things. Even Republicans are distancing themselves from him in today’s talk shows. If the Republicans feel strongly then they should open a congressional inquiry on this. I bet they won’t.

The survey of 50K homes is then extrapolated to represent ~100M homes. The results of the survey are multiplied by ~2000 to do this. So a difference of 435 people who found at least part time work suddenly becomes 870K people. It isn’t hard to get an anomaly of 435 people among the 50K sampled homes with just a slight change in wording of the questions. Chances are slim that anything like this will be repeated in the next survey. Hopefully anyone swayed by this number will see reality just before voting and move away from their favorable opinion. .

Remember how census workers kept calling talk radio to say they were hired and given orientation to count as new jobs, then laid off for several weeks then called back for training to count as new jobs, let off again for the requisite time, then called back to work a day or two and counted again as new jobs. I heard one say she never really got out of the office to do any actual work but was counted several times as a new hire and paid for all the training and paperwork she filled out each time.

What does provoke me about him is the way he’s pointed fingers at George Bush for nearly 4 years about the bad economy he’s inherited. He’d rather blame Bush than get the job done, and turn things around. As long as he has someone to blame, he thinks he’s home free. NOT! Clearly, Knight of Malta Geoffrey T. Boisi is one of the Order’s “movers and shakers” in the grand theft and destruction of the American peoples. Part of that orchestrated “chaos” is the plot to “outsource” American jobs to foreign nations whose laborers work for slave wages.
Adviser Douglas R. Brehm has discovered the Company’s power behind the nation’s corporate outsourcing of American jobs via the duplicity of Knight Boisi. It is also worthy of mention that former General Electric head Roman Catholic Jack Welch is connected with Boisi, remembering that GE is one of the Order’s foundational contractors for the building of the Vatican Empire’s anti-gravity craft commonly called “UFOs.”

Yes, I have to agree with you. I know the law says that PUBLIC FIGURES are fair game (as in a person saying something against them can’t be sued for slander ) but I think we need to tweek some of that
to the point that people who are thought to be in positions of TRUST (elected officials) should NOT be allowed to make up facts – lie – to the public… I know that is really infringing …but there has to be some consequence for MISLEADING… I mean a food mfgr. can’t claim that by eating potatoes you can loose 20# after eating one potato….whats the difference? People will vote for Obama based upon pure lies..not misinformation …but lies designed to mislead public opinion… I’d like to hear from

Obama is a marxist, the lie is the favorite tool of the marxist. We have a community organizer mentored under retzko and the other indicted slugs of chicago politics. This community organizer would love to work his experimental manifesto on the free world.

It simply is a disaster without equal in american history, the goal is to funnel the masses into the urban jungle. You raise the price of a gallon of gas to eliminate movement and herd the peasants to the trolleys. What industry that exists will be forced to move to the web of the cities since no one can afford a gallon of gas. You have your utopia that mirrors the ugly gloom of 20th century russia, the people gather in their closet dwellings and fill the cabinets with vodka to assuage the hopelessness. Hope and change is coming to a town not faraway. Pray for our howdy doody pontiff, he won’t be able to do it alone. He’s too pathetic.

I agree with you. I do not think that Romney (Whom I support) will get elected. They will find a way to fix the numbers. If for some reason they can’t – Obama is not going to say Oh – Here you are Romney – he will find a way to hold on to the white house…. induced riots and decleration of Marshall Law.

It really doesn’t matter if they somehow manipulated the numbers. It was reported last week that they twisted arms not to send out pink slips in the defense department so at least some manipulation was happening.

7.8% is not anything to be proud of and this does not move the needle. Obama and co are just trying to make it to the finish line before everything falls apart.

If, IF Romney wins, he will have his hands full. And you can bet Mathews will turn around and talk about how bad the numbers are. Rough road ahead.

Well SPARKYRULES, if that’s what you believe, then I guess YOU have a choice. Listen to each…then you can vote for the Marxist that is taking us rocket fast into “change” that is not going to bode well for American citizens, or the guy that loves America, the Constitution, and liberty for all. My money is on the guy that took dozens of failed companies and saved all but a few (people seem to forget that ALL were going to fail), turned around the Olympics, and brought his home state into the black when he was Governor. Quite the contrast to Obama! Where to start…foisted a money sucking, regulation riddled, pork-laden, myriad tax monstrosity health “care” program that he used intimidation and strong arming (and deliberately ignored his own promise of transparency and time to digest), to get passed. Obama, who pumped $$$billions into green companies with questionable balance sheets (yes, Bush admin. looked at Solyendra, said bad business, can’t risk the taxpayer’s money). But Obama, desperate for a green “win” probably thought that they couldn’t fail if he GAVE another of his campaign donors half a billion dollars (of taxpayer money!). Then, when they were failing, he restructured the loan so the top Solyndra guys (his campaign donors…money laundering lite) walked away with (taxpayer!) money. Or bypassing Congress (there goes THAT check/balance!), etc! What a guy. Sorry SPARKYRULES, IMHO, we CAN’T AFFORD another four years of Obama.

@FORCOMMON I won’t argue that Romney might be better than Obama but some of your facts are incorrect. He said in his debate with Obama that there is a place for federal government in education. As that is not in the constitution he does not love the constitution. He also supports the PATRIOT ACT which means he does not love liberty and he didn’t leave Mass. in the black. A lie is a lie whether told by a democrat or a republican!

I’ve tried to tell this to employees about Temp Workers, you can’t count them as actually being employed. Until they’re on somebody’s payroll officially with benefits, they’ll never be considered an actual employee. Otherwise, they can be let go of whenever the company sees fit to replace them, no strings attached. Kind of like a rental car or a street walker….except, you mess with either of those, you’ll pay for it via the rental company having your credit account, or the pimp via his own means.

Here’s something else about Temp Workers that many don’t care to talk about: Welfare Recipients are treated better than Temp Workers. Depending on where you are and the job in question, Welfare Recipients get more money than Temp Workers.

Well, it looks like Temp workers were treated unusually well in September, because a significantly fewer number of them were terminated:

“In September, the number of job losers and persons who completed temporary jobs
decreased by 468,000.” (from BLS website)

Meet the Obama Donors at the BLS

At least two economists at the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) have contributed to President Barack Obama’s campaign. Harley Frazis of Bethesda, MD, has contributed at least $2,000 to Obama and $9,000 to the Democratic National Committee over the last three election cycles.
