‘Thought It Was a Mistake on the Sign’: California Gas Prices Officially Hit All-Time High

(TheBlaze/AP) — It’s a record, though not exactly one to be proud of. The price of gasoline has officially hit an all-time average high in California of $4.6140 a gallon Saturday, fueled by a reduced supply and a volatile market.
The record was set by a fraction of a penny, according to AAA spokesman Michael Green. The previous high was $4.6096 on June 19, 2008.
Prices throughout the state were expected to increase for several more days before leveling off, after a temporary reduction in supply triggered a price spike that saw fuming motorists paying $5 or more per gallon in some locations and station owners shutting down pumps in others.
AAA’s Daily Fuel Gauge report released Saturday said the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded across California rose 12 cents from its Friday mark of about $4.49.

Saturday’s price was the highest in the nation, with the Golden State leapfrogging Hawaii this week as the state with the most expensive fuel. The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded across California was 47 cents more than just one week ago, according to the AAA report.
“I seriously thought it was a mistake on the sign when we pulled in,” said Nancy Garcia, 34, while filling her Honda Accord at a Chevron station in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Highland Park. She paid $4.65 a gallon for regular grade and said she couldn’t afford to fill her tank all the way.
When supplies drop, wholesale prices rise. Then distributors and station owners have to pay more to fill up their station’s tanks. They then raise their prices based on how much they paid for their current inventory, how much they think they will have to pay for their next shipment, and, how much their competitors are charging.
The national average Saturday was about $3.81 a gallon, the highest ever for this time of year.

The dramatic surge came after a power outage Monday at a Southern California refinery that reduced supply in an already fragile and volatile market, analysts said, but the refinery came back online Friday and prices are expected to stabilize by next week.
Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst at GasBuddy.com, predicted the average price could peak as high as $4.85.
“There is some relief in sight but probably not for a couple of days. Early next week is when we may see some more significant declines … but at retail prices, prices may climb for the next two to three days before they start to come down,” he said.
CBS has video with disgruntled consumers and gas station owners:
While prices were higher everywhere in California, there were variances Saturday. Chico had the lowest average price at $4.46, according to AAA, while San Luis Obispo was highest at $4.71. Prices averaged $4.67 in San Diego, $4.66 in the Los Angeles area, $4.55 in Fresno and $4.49 in Sacramento.
The price of diesel has also increased, adding significant costs for truckers who typically put hundreds of dollars of fuel in their tanks. It’s gotten so bad, some truckers may stop driving altogether, said Michael Shaw, spokesman for the California Trucking Association, whose members move 80 percent of the cargo on California’s roads each year.
“The fluctuation and rapid increase of prices makes it difficult to plan ahead and take on new contracts,” he said. “It’s difficult to operate in that environment.”

High gas prices are posted at a 76 gas station, foreground, and a Shell station, in Stevenson Ranch, Calif. , Friday, Oct. 5, 2012. (Photo: AP)
A web of refinery and transmission problems is to blame, analysts said. The situation is compounded by a California pollution law that requires a special blend of cleaner-burning gasoline from April to October, said Denton Cinquegrana, executive editor of the Oil Price Information Service.
“We use the phrase `the perfect storm,’ and you know what, this current one makes those other perfect storms look like a drizzle. I don’t want to scare anyone, but this is a big problem,” Cinquegrana said. “Run-outs are happening left and right.”
Among the recent disruptions, an Aug. 6 fire at a Chevron Corp. refinery in Richmond that left one of the region’s largest refineries producing at a reduced capacity, and a Chevron pipeline that moves crude oil to Northern California also was shut down.
Gasoline inventories in California are at their lowest point in more than 10 years, a situation made worse by the mandate for the special summer gasoline blend. Few refineries outside the state can make it, meaning there are few outside sources to draw from for help, Cinquegrana said.

Carl Smith stops to take a picture of high gasoline prices posted at a gas station Friday, Oct. 5, 2012, in San Diego. (Photo: AP)
The California Air Resources Board was reviewing a request from the California Independent Oil Marketers Association for a waiver that would allow gas stations to begin selling winter-blend gasoline before Halloween.
Some stations ran out of gas and simply shut down rather than take the risk of buying gas at soaring prices only to be stuck with a glut of overpriced fuel if prices drop.
Mark Mitchell, co-owner of the Coast Oil fuel distributorship in San Jose, said when prices hit their peak, some stations would need to charge about $4.89 to break even.
A 52-year-old television costume designer told the New York Times he’s “not happy” about the current situation as he watched the digits climb higher and higher as he filled up his tank.
Adding that his wages aren’t increasing as fast as the cost of living, he remarked: “I’ve been putting in a reasonable amount of gas, enough for two days or so…It’s my way of budgeting what I have to work with each week.”

Posted on October 7, 2012 at 12:15amOne just has to wonder where gas prices and unemployment would be right now if we hadn’t had every attempt to drill wells and build refineries and pipelines tied up in court for years or decades?
Perhaps the proper thing to do would be to push through laws that prevent environmentalist groups from filing lawsuits to block legal businesses from operating, and reduce the EPA to an advisory agency with NO regulatory authority. As long as the whackos can be appointed to the EPA and then right regulations with the force of law without any oversight or consequences, we’ll keep getting these nearly impossible to eliminate regulations that are based on personal agenda in lieu of true science.

1. They want to save earth’s limited natural resources for themselves.

We decided long ago that the dangers of excessive and unwarranted concealment of pertinent facts far outweighed the dangers which are cited to justify it. Even today, there is little value in opposing the threat of a closed society by imitating its arbitrary restrictions. Even today, there is little value in insuring the survival of our nation if our traditions do not survive with it. And there is very grave danger that an announced need for increased security will be seized upon those anxious to expand its meaning to the very limits of official censorship and concealment. It was bankrupt (both financially and morally) years ago before Arnold was governor. They keep putting on band aids, changing the color of the band aid, but the basic underlying problems are UNCHANGED.
Soon the whole house of cards is going to come crashing down and the takers (those that only take from the government and never give) are going to get their just rewards. ProgressiveSlayer’s new “guillotine” avatar reminds me of a Monk story told to me by the head Monk at the Ramakrishna Vedanta Society in Hollywood Ca. (referring to American pragmatism)
A long time ago, in a far away Country, 3 men were captured, tried as spies and sentenced to death. There was a Frenchman, an Englishman and an American. The Frenchman was put under the guillotine, the blade was released but it squeaked to a stop before cutting his head off. The executioner said, “God has smiled upon you and saved you, you are free to go”. The Frenchman got up, screamed Viva La French and ran off. The Englishman was next and the same same happened. He got up, yelled, “Long live the Queen” and ran off. They brought the American up to the guillotine and he said, “You know…. if you put a little oil right here……”
Hope you enjoyed it!

We have more oil and NG than any country on earth that won‘t be exploited
=======================================
The industry analysts who actually follow this say otherwise:
(from April 22, 2012)
“We’ll see another build in Cushing, Oklahoma,” Phil Flynn, an analyst at futures brokerage PFGBest in Chicago, said yesterday by phone. “There is no place for that oil to go.”
Domestic crude output climbed to 6.05 million barrels a day in the week ended March 30, the highest level since December 1999 and an increase of 7.3 percent from a year earlier.
Energy companies have been boosting oil production, encouraged by rising prices. The number of oil rigs in the U.S. grew 50 percent from a year ago to 1,329 last week, according to Baker Hughes Inc., a Houston oil-services company.”

Holly-Weird is at it again. Moron Daryl Hannah was arrested in Texas on Thursday, for protesting an oil pipeline designed to bring crude from Canada to the Gulf Coast.

Obama, drill here, drill now, and install that pipeline from Canada to the U.S.
We have the resources, but Obama is constantly blocking us from having our own oil supply. He wants us to remain dependent on foreign oil.

Posted on October 6, 2012 at 7:48pmWhy are the Californians whining? Isn’t this what Obama wanted anyway? If CA doesn’t want these prices, then stop supporting the idiot who will make sure the prices hit these highs and higher if he stays in office.

Posted on October 6, 2012 at 8:15pmThere is a bunch of us in California that do not support these idiot democrats in California or the federal government. But we are out numbered. Certainly it is self-defeating to have government policies that raise the price of gas, and push business out of the state, but these folks don’t care. Ok, so now you are going to tell me to stop complaining and move. Can’t. I did not sell my house in time. Before the democrats like Dodd and Franks, and the likes of Acorn destroyed the housing market. So I can’t move unless you believe that my mortgage company will be happy to settle for what my house is now worth.

Let Us Pray
Psalm 2008-2012
Barack Obama is my shepherd, I shall not want. He leadeth me beside the still factories.
He restoreth my faith in the Republican Party. He guideth me in the path of unemployment. Yea, though I walk in the valley of the breadline, I shall not go hungry. Obama has anointed my income with taxes. My expenses runneth over my income. Surely, poverty and hard living will follow me all the days of my life. The democrats and I will live in a rented house forever. But, I am glad I am an American. I am glad I am free. But, I wish I was a dog, and Barack Obama was a tree.

Posted on October 6, 2012 at 9:29pmCreative, funny, scary and true. May I pass this on to my 2 kids so they can have it ‘go viral’ with their age group? They are amazing on ‘beating down the liberal beast’ and constantly battle (and often win) to bring truth and real enlightenment to HS and college age kids, bring them around to a right way of thinking…I think they would use this wisely.

Posted on October 6, 2012 at 7:40pmHow can anyone still be supporting this president and be proud of where things are going? It blows my mind how blind people can be to something right in front of their face. The only way green energy will be competitive is by making everything else much more expensive. Yet they follow progressives like they are making everything affordable. I Pray they wake up before its too late.

Posted on October 6, 2012 at 7:33pmI filled up at Costco in Utah this morning. $3.49. A tanker was refilling the Costco tanks while I was there and I heard the driver commenting to the attendant that he didn’t know how Costco was selling gas so cheaply compared to other stations in the area. The lines were long and I could only afford to fill half the tank. Another example of Obama’s Economy Tax.

Posted on October 8, 2012 at 1:47amI’d give my left arm for gas at that price here. I put gas in my car a week ago Friday… I’ve got a 1/4 tank left. I’m praying that I can get to work and back for the next 4 days on what’s in the tank. Thankfully I work only 8 miles from home. When I got gas last week it was $4.02 which was down from what it has been. Now that same station was at $4.59 on Friday… I haven’t been past it in the last couple days, but according to the news reports I would think it’s around $4.75 by now. That is plain old 87 unleaded. Was supposed to go to San Diego next weekend for an event… not gonna happen now. :(

Posted on October 6, 2012 at 7:25pmThis is EXACTLY what Liberal Progressive Polices get you. Either you get horrible economic policies… or the Police department tells the citizens to abandon their cities (Detroit). Or sell their children and their futures (China debt and Chicago Teacher unions). What I don’t understand is why we keep doing the same thing and expect a different outcome? Jimmy Carter was not an “oops” that happened for no apparent reason.
