The family and friends of 18-year-old University of South Alabama student Gil Collar– who was fatally shot by police Saturday– are looking for answers.
According to reports, Collar was shot around 1:30 a.m. after he started banging on the window of police headquarters, completely naked. Describing him as “muscular,” a campus representative added that Collar wrestled at Wetumpka High School before enrolling in the university, and that he assumed a “fighting stance” before he started chasing the officer. The officer tried to retreat numerous times to defuse the situation before opening fire, the school said.
Collar was shot first in the chest, but apparently was able to get back up and challenge the officer one more time before collapsing, police say.
But sophomore Tyler Kendrick said campus authorities still haven’t provided any satisfying answers about why Collar was killed.
“Really, it just upsets me that there’s no other way to apprehend an unarmed student rather than shooting him. I don’t understand that,” Kendrick said.
Student Joshua Frye said it seemed the officer could have used something other than a firearm– perhaps first trying a Tazer or pepper spray– to stop Collar.
“What I feel is that a cop has more than a gun,” he noted.
Campus officials said the confrontation was recorded by security cameras, and the video and other information has been turned over to the district attorney and the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office.
Local station WKRG has more, including an interview with Collar’s friends and classmates:
Colgan Meanor reportedly went to high school with Collar, and then enrolled at the same college.
“He was a great, loving guy who always made people smile,” she said. “He’s not the kind of guy that people knew him and said he would do something like this.”
Collar’s former wrestling coach was only able to say “he was a…” before breaking down in an interview with The Wetumka Herald. He later instant messaged the paper:
“I remember the first time he walked into the wrestling room … He was such a natural. He was the only wrestler I coached who wrestled varsity for six years. That takes more heart than I can tell you. We began our tenure in Wetumpka wrestling at the same time. He was a physical, spiritual and mental warrior. And I love him like my own.”
Collar was the second person killed on the South Alabama campus since last year, but university spokesman Keith Ayers said South Alabama is still “a very safe campus.”
The officer who shot the young man was placed on paid leave, and an autopsy will determine if drugs or alcohol were involved.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Oct. 7, 2012 at 8:19pmOfficers get training about the extreme dangers in dealing with people high on PCP. This attacker showed all the signs of such a person. A threat like that needs to be dealt with fast before he kills an innocent person, which includes the officer. The officer did not go looking for this problem. This new “bath salts” drug has some of the same naked, crazed and violent signs and those people eat other people.

Oct. 7, 2012 at 9:35pmWhile it is tragic that a seemingly good 18 year kid was shot and killed, the officer acted correctly. If you repeatedly attack an armed man, a police officer no less, expect to be shot. It’s pretty simple.
I hope others learn from this kids mistake.

Oct. 7, 2012 at 10:02pmPolice are out of control. They need to be held to constitutional standards. I hope we never come to marshal law in this country. It will be uniformed police that will become the targets. Hurricane Katrina proved that fact. We currently have way to much money invested in a system that is designed to break laws rather than protect personal freedoms. Check out the new fade of swating somebody. Ashton Kutcher just had it happen to him. A neighbor one block from me here in Sarasota Fl had it happen to him. Helicopters fly over my location nightly and late. We are more concerned with overbearing cops than petty crime. They don’t need a reason anymore. A simple 911 call mention concern and that you know they have guns and they got the local sherriff’s swat team along with the fire department blocking the roads. I have the 911 phone call that was made for that op. Now ask yourself if a simple phone call should summon the swat team? Heck no. It’s out of control. Period.

Oct. 7, 2012 at 11:01pmYet, if a regular citizen would have shot the kid, and explained the situation the same way the cop did, the citizen would have been arrested, charged, and prosecuted.
Police should have no more rights, powers or privileges under the law than any law abiding citizen has. Under law, the power and authority of government officials and their agents is derived by delegation from the citizens. If the citizens lack power or authority to act in a certain way, then they lack the ability to delegate such a power or authority to the state.
It is tyranny if and when state agents usurp authority and power that is denied to law abiding citizens.
The equal protection clause requires that state agents be held to at least the same standards of conduct that is imposed on the citizens. The double standard that puts a higher value on a policeman’s life, or gives him license to act that is denied to citizens is a threat to liberty and the foundation of a police state.
This student never actually physically contacted the officer, but acted menacingly. Then what of George Zimmerman, who only pulled a gun and killed Trevon Martin AFTER Martin attacked him and was beating his head into the ground. Why was he arrested for murder; but when an officer does something similar – he is given a presumption of justification instead of a presumption of guilt by police and prosecutors?
I’m not suggesting the officer was wrong – only that police-involved shootings should be treated the sam

Your initial statement that cops are out of control does not coalesce the rest of the statement. “SWATing” does not show a lack of control of the officer’s involved but a lack of morality and ability to abide by the law on the person whom made the phone call. As a supposed soldier you know that you don’t go into a dangerous situation under manned. And as such, again, as a supposed soldier, you also would know that you take threats seriously. And as a supposed soldier you also would know you listen to what intel you recieve.
So if your intel (again assuming you really were a soldier) told you house “X” in the Green Zone was being used to store munitions and plan a terrorist attack on the FOB you were assigned to would you simply walk up to the house and knock on the door like Andy Griffith, asking them to “give themselves up”?
Simple anser is no.
When the cops recieve a 911 call that according to their dept. policy iniates an immediate response from SWAT/HRT/SRT it happens that way. Patrol division sets up a perimeter and begins any required evacuations then SWAT sets up, etc….
Had that NOT happened and your neighbor truely been the turd his enemy said he was, what would have happened in your world of lollipops is the responding patrolman would likely die and you would have said he was stupid for not listening to his intel that the guy inside the dwelling was a turd.
You cant have it both ways!

Wise words from somebody that apparantly has never strapped on a badge, medical bag or fire fighter’s bunker gear. And by wise I mean just like Prez Barry.
Tasers (stun guns) don’t always work and not every officer on the department gets one. They dang certain are not reliable on people doped up on psychotropics! With the many lawsuits against police use of Tasers many agencies are restricting whom can carry them and others are dropping them from use all together. Batons (night sticks) do not stop these idividuals either. That is because a baton is a pain compliance device and these narcotics prevent a pain response. The only way to subdue individuals like this with a baton is a head strike and head strikes are considered LETHAL FORCE! Just as lethal as if he used his SIDE ARM!
So really Barrack, really?
Grow up, learn some law (not just theory but practical), do some ride alongs with your home town, maybe go get some training as either a reserve officer or police auxillary and maybe, MAYBE you will begin to understand where you went wrong. Or go get trained on EMT or Paramedic.

I think that I was the last one there, and as I approached she rushed, picked me up and tossed me as if I was her hairbrush. It took us all to hold her down while keeping all of our body parts clear of her teeth. She may have sustained the broken arm while we put her in cuffs, but not really sure. I was concerned that she might be able to break a chain link on those cuffs. I saw a Samoan at Bragg who was already so big that his arms could not be pulled around him close enough to put regular handcuffs on him. They used a pair of leg irons and he still broke them. A long time ago, in a far away Country, 3 men were captured, tried as spies and sentenced to death. There was a Frenchman, an Englishman and an American. The Frenchman was put under the guillotine, the blade was released but it squeaked to a stop before it could cut his head off. The executioner said, “God has smiled upon you and saved you, you are free to go”. The Frenchman got up, screamed Viva La French and ran off. The Englishman was next and the same thing happened. He got up, yelled, “Long live the Queen” and ran off. They brought the American up to the guillotine and he said, “You know…. if you put a little oil right here……”

If a naked man were banging on your window at 1:30am, you would’ve called the police — or shot him if he had managed to break through the window. Or if you are a dumb liberal (redundancy), you would have allowed him to break your neck and then go after your wife.

Oct. 7, 2012 at 8:59pmNow Kupo, why would you say that? Do you have any logic? Or have you “doped” yourself out of it already?
Here are the steps of logic, if I may:
1. The purpose of hallucinogenic drugs, (and alcohol, for that matter), is to bend the mind. We assume a normal mind before the drug is ingested, sniffed or injected.
2. Under normal conditions no one forces one to take them. It is a choice.
3. Point number two is why EVERYONE should be culpable for EVERYTHING they do “under the influence”.
And, that is EXACTLY why I don’t buy legalizing any MORE drugs.
When they start holding ALL Free-Will alcohol users FULLY ACCOUNTABLE for THEIR actions while tipsy, or drunk, then MAYBE I will believe the people of this nation are MORAL ENOUGH, and RESPONSIBLE ENOUGH to handle legalization of other drugs.

Soooooo dumb.
“The purpose of hallucinogenic drugs, (and alcohol, for that matter), is to bend the mind. We assume a normal mind before the drug is ingested, sniffed or injected….blah blah blah blah blah”
You can do these things just fine and still retain control over yourself. If you aren’t able to control yourself and you do something stupid, it’s YOUR fault, NOT the drug’s. That’s the definition of people being fully accountable for their actions while under the effects of the drug.
I can stay home and smoke a bowl quietly. Who is the victim here? That’s right, nobody, even though I am technically committing a “crime”.
OR
I can smoke a bowl, hop in my car, and get into an accident because I’m in no shape to be driving. The cause of the accident was not smoking the bowl. The cause was deciding to drive while impaired. Similarly, I could cause the same accident by driving while incredibly tired, yet it would be absurd to require people by law to sleep 8 hours per night. What isn’t absurd is to expect drivers to be alert behind the wheel.
I can’t believe you accused me of frying the logic out of my brain through drugs and then immediately wrote out the drivel that you spouted at me.

A trained wrestler is roughly equal to, some would argue IS equal to, a trained martial arts student. If either a trained wrestler or a martial arts student gets you in a grapple/hold, you’re in serious trouble. And some of those grapple/holds are deadly. When I studied martial arts, I was astonished at how quickly and easily I could kill with nothing but my hands and arms. Many have been reduced to accepting candidates with past criminal records. Truth. The knee jerk reaction of some of you so called conservatives on this site confuse me. You don’t like barry the jackboot but attack me for my anger at a possibly needless death at the hands of another jackbook. I don’t give cops or anyone else a pass for acting like an idiot with a gun. If that was my son and it turns out he was not a deadly threat when shot, I promise you my life that that “cop” would pay the price. And it would not be easy on him.

Oct. 7, 2012 at 7:43pmThe cop saw how big he was threw the window he/she should have called for backup. Sounds like the officer put him/herself in harms way to me. They think all they have to do is give orders and your to obey and if you don’t well then just open fire. Police have WAY to MUCH power!!!!!

Oct. 7, 2012 at 7:16pmare you kidding me…the guy attacks a cop naked and it is in the story the cop tried to stop him multiple times before shooting. and these idiots “cant understand why he was shot”? the guy was obviously super high on something and im sorry but people have this idiotic, monday morning quarterback expectation of what the cop can and cannot do. im sorry im sure he was a good kid n all, but the facts are there, and there are consequences for actions. instead of 2nd guessing the cop, why not try and figure out why your friend decided it was a good idea to attack a cop naked in the firstplace. this is open and shut!

Gee, I’m not baffled at all…..
If this punk was banging on my window naked and challenged me, or my family, he would have been shot also.

Oct. 7, 2012 at 7:41pmUnfortunately, certain drugs can turn the nicest person you have ever met into a raging maniac. Certain drugs can also give a person almost super human strength which explains his getting up and going on the attack again after being shot. The real problem is that he may not have taken the drugs (If in fact they find them in his system) voluntarily. He may have been slipped a drink laced with something without his knowledge. If in a strong enough dose and him maybe not being used to it could cause just such a reaction. I hope they get to the bottom of this. If they find out someone actually slipped him a “Mickey”, that person should be tried for involuntary manslaughter.
By the way, I have seen police (Luckily there were more than one at the time) try pepper spray and tasers on a patient up on drugs. Neither fazed him in any way. They were finally able to wrestle him to the ground and 5 burly cops funally cuffed him. I have seen hop heads acually break restraints in an ambulance, even bending the stretcher rails in the process. The power given to the consumer of the drugs sometimes is incredible.
We need to pray for this young man’s family and also for the cop. This is truly tragic for both sides.

Oct. 7, 2012 at 7:15pmShot once in the chest with a medium/high caliber police load and gets back up to charge again? And the officer didn’t fire again, multiple times? Shows considerable restraint to me. I wonder how effective pepper spray or a tazer would have been…

Oct. 7, 2012 at 7:14pmIt’s always easy to say that police over-reacted when they kill someone who is unarmed, naked etc., but the reality is that we were not there. We don’t know the details. The same as people assuming that they know how they would react in combat situations (usually with bravery and valor…). Again, until you have walked in the shoes of those in harm’s way don’t be too quick to judge. And no, I am not a police officer, but I am a Vietnam combat veteran.

Oct. 7, 2012 at 7:30pmThis is certainly a tragedy, but lets give it some thought here. Does any armed person, police officer or concealed carry person, bear a responsibility to keep the weapon he bears out of the hands of an aggressor who can overpower him physically? This behavior is beyond bizarre and about as foolish as it gets. An aggressive naked man confronting a police officer is not one I would like to see turned into an aggressive naked armed man simply because he the got the better of an officer who underestimated his responsibility to keep his weapon in good hands. I am very sorry this boy lost his life, but for crying out loud… why do such things?

Do you think a drunk kid can actually chase an officer? Don’t you think the officer could tell the kid was not drunk?
How was the officer supposed to know whether the naked guy pounding on the window that late at night was in imminent danger and needed his help? What would you have done differently?
