A Frustrated Paul Ryan Confronts Interviewer After Strange Question: ‘You Trying to Stuff Words in People’s Mouths?’

A Frustrated Paul Ryan Confronts Interviewer After Strange Question

A seemingly routine interview with WJRT in Flint, Michigan was abruptly ended after GOP vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan and his team got frustrated with the interviewer’s attempt to “stuff words in people’s mouths.” The interview had already run over when Ryan and company shut it down, according to a campaign spokesperson.

The video interview began innocently enough, with a few questions about gun laws in the United States.

“What we’ve learned – if we just put more gun laws in place, it doesn’t actually stop criminals from getting guns and committing these crimes,” Ryan said. “This is why we need economic growth, this is why we need education reform.”

Ryan also argued that the nation needs to be focused on solving the “problems of civil society.”

“Does this country have a gun problem?” the interviewer asked.

“This country has a crime problem,” Ryan replied.

“Not a gun problem?” the interviewer asked again.

Ryan went on to explain that not even President Obama is talking about implementing more gun laws. He said the country’s existing laws just need to be enforced.

“The best thing to help prevent violent crime in the inner cities is to bring opportunity in the inner cities. Is to help teach people good discipline, good character. That is civil society. That is what charities and civic groups and churches do to help one another make sure that they can realize the value in one another,” Ryan said.

“And you can do all that by cutting taxes? With a big tax cut?” the reporter asked out of nowhere.

“Those are your words not mine,” Ryan shot back.

Immediately after the “tax cut” question, someone off camera interrupts the interview and Ryan gets up from his chair and begins taking off his microphone. He then looked to his interviewer and said, “That was kind of strange. You trying to stuff words in people’s mouths?”

The local reporter does his best to defend himself, however, his speech is rather inaudible as he tries to assemble a sentence. “I don’t know if that’s strange,” he said.

To be sure, though he was obviously annoyed by the strange and random question, Ryan did not lose his temper or become hostile in any way.

Watch the interview here:

Romney spokesman Brendan Buck later provided the following statement about the incident to BuzzFeed:

The reporter knew he was already well over the allotted time for the interview when he decided to ask a weird question relating gun violence to tax cuts. Ryan responded as anyone would in such a strange situation. When you do nearly 200 interviews in a couple months, eventually you’re going to see a local reporter embarrass himself.

The Obama campaign tried, unsuccessfully, to argue that Ryan “brought his temper” to Michigan. It is clear in the video that Ryan does not lose his temper or even raise his voice.

“Congressman Ryan brought both his temper and penchant for dishonesty to Michigan today,” campaign spokesman Danny Kanner said in a press release. “After walking out of a local interview when he was pressed about Mitt Romney’s tax plan, Ryan told supporters that Romney knows we need a strong auto industry, but Romney would have just ‘let Detroit go bankrupt.’”

Additionally, WJRT, the local ABC affiliate who conducted the interview, appears to have removed the interview from its website. The link that BuzzFeed provides to WJRT’s story results in an error message and a search of the site turns up no results for the interview with Ryan.

      @CATB

I know what you are saying man…..lived in Kalamazoo, which is down I94 in Western Michigan…loved the area (hated the winters); but man, going to the East side of the state is purely depressing.

But, I moved to North Georgia and don’t regret it a bit……especially since the gun laws aren’t as oppressive as they are in Michigan. Back around 2004, when I still lived in Michigan, I decided to buy a CO2 pellet pistol. Had to register it at the Kalamazoo County Sherriff’s Department…..a pellet pistol? Give me a break.

Since I moved to Georgia, I bought a 9mm handgun. Didn’t have to go to the Sherriffs Department to “register it”. Since then I got my CCW permit, and bought several handguns & rifles here in Georgia with no issue whatsover. Am I going to commit a crime with them? No, but then again, I guess no one would admit that. BUT, even though I am in a rural area, I understand that there was a home evasion not but 4 or 5 miles from my house where 4 men, all armed with a rifle and a handgun for a total of 8 guns between them invaded someones home. For what purpose, I do not know….sounds a little heavy armed for a burglary. But the bottom line is the homeowner was able to get to his weapon (don’t know what it was), but lets put it this way…..four men invaded the home, three got away. The fourth left the scene in a body bag.

That’s why I own weapons. And every citizen should be allowed to purchase them legally and defend the

maybe Pauly just should have answered the original question he was posed – which he did not.
He was NOT asked about the CRIME problem.

The shooting of Gabby Giffords, the movie theater and the Sikh Temple were GUN problems.
Little Pauly didn’t want to offend the NRA.

This guy may have injected his own personal feelings into this interview more than he should have. Either way he’s an assclown.

Also, Flint and the surrounding Dearborn area are huge Muslim enclaves. I do not mind any culture / people coming to this country becuase they want the American dream. I’m worried that they are wolves in sheeps clothing.

Just when did professional journalism go out the door ?
Instead of reporting the news & conducting coherent interviews
for the public, they have but 2 initiatives:

      #1
Make the news without reporting the facts.
They seem to think that puts them in power
& makes them the focus of the interview, smarter than the interviewee,
whom they just tried to, childishly & unprofessionally, bleed & bully.

      # 2
Out do their other crap competition, by controlling the interview,
in such a cheap manner, hoping it produces enough meat,
so they can then, go carve it up in sound bites
& get self-exposure on all those other crap media sources.
They aren’t there to shed light on the issues-
they are there to shine a spotlight on themselves,
hoping to become somewhat of a”Celebrity”, in their own right.

Instead of striving to be like great journalists of the past,
they all want to emulate Harvey Levin of TMZ.
They all want, what they perceive, their handsome mug or pretty mask,
on camera…talking heads minus intelligence, dignity & professionalism.

Firsthand, this election is about restored leadership for America,
but secondly, it’s about putting a stave
in the wicked heart of the Bleedia-Schmedia.
      They have 2 choices-
rip it out & get professionally serious
or fall on their false faces & bleed to death.

As with the “Liar King”, NO one with half a wit & mind will miss you !
America doesn’t NEED or wants to contend with either !

Way to go Ryan! Love this man’s style – he will confront you head on with facts and intellect, not run around behind your back making fun of you, which the liberals do.

BTW – I’ve researched gun crime statistics, via many sources – interestingly enough, the CDC keeps record on EVERY gun injury and death in the US (by law all GSW’s must be reported). The facts prove that where citizes are allowed Open carry, there is LESS crime and injury than concealed carry. And likewise, less than where guns are not allowed. Case and point – Washington DC. Guns were banned all together and gun crimes and deaths have skyrocketed. Chicago 2012 is more violent than in Capones days! Gun violence is deterred when criminals know everyone else has a gun.

These are the facts. Colorado is open carry, except where prohibited by felony statutes…i.e. movie theatres… Get my point? Personally I carry everywhere, even in 3006 establishments, because I refuse to allow the gov’t force me into a life threatening situation.

But after living here I could not take my daughter back up there. I was there in March for my brother death. In one night 2 murders mother on her way home from work. Shot when pumping gas into her car. Just so they could take the car with out a fight thats one. The 2nd was a drug deal gone bad. Many type of robberys home invasion hold ups car jackings. List gos on and on this was a Thrusday night. This is a city with only 150,000 people. If you took all the crime for a year from DFW. Then compare it too Flint and Detroit. A hole years worth of crime from DFW. Would be equal to 2 or 3 months from Flint and Detroit. Its the LIBS who have killed my home state. The programs they have done. Did nothing but in slave the people and make them depend on GOV. Me and my best friend for 29 years don’t talk anymore. Because of the 2004 union report about Geoge Bush. I would bet that rural areas have overall a higher overall gun ownership rate and significantly lower gun murder rate. Just speculatin’.

As much as I admire Paul Ryan, I must disagree with one statement he made.
He said, “not even President Obama is talking about implementing more gun laws”.

Obama may not be “talking” out loud about it yet, but just let him win a second term, and Obama will take away all guns from law abiding citizens. Only criminals and Government officials will have guns.

It’s eerie and evil as can be. We should stay out of this mess! Nothing to gain at all, we are being setup for the final nail in the U.S. coffin. Let cooler heads prevail, This is not our war. Bring the Troops Home. Protect our US Boarders Now.

I reiterate….Obama must go…..these are our choices. O or R. A vote for O is the end of America, a vote for R is a window of opportunity. So many have woken up. If Romney fails us we will end up in a civil war. If Obama get another 4 its a given. Civil war….vs ……..a potential civil war. Personally I don’t care……the fact that Obama was elected in the first place tells me all I need to know. This country is not the one I grew up in and if I want it back, I’ll have to fight for it.

Saw that too…… took a few minutes and wrote a rather scathing email to the Romney campaign (everyone else should do the same!!!!) and told them to pull their heads out of their asses, quit listening to McCain before they start WWIII by arming radical Muslims that will end up using our own weapons against us (soldiers and civilians)…… told them we wouldn’t put up with more Libya’s…. even if they were created by Romney…. and that we would see he’d have a rather short 4 years in the White house if he thought we’d let that fly any more.

There are times when I think we’d almost be better off removing the office of President or doing something like a buddy of mine did while at Rice University. One year they elected a refrigerator for class president, since at the very least, it would keep your beer cold.
