Electoral College Model Predicts Romney Will Win Even Bigger Than Previously Thought in 2012
In August, TheBlaze told you about University of Colorado Professors Ken Bickers and Michael Berry and their highly-accurate Electoral College prediction model. As you may recall, Bickers and Berry, using their metrics, are able to retroactively predict every presidential win since 1980.
Their 2012 model made headlines two months ago because, despite polling, it found that Republican presidential candidate Romney would win 320 Electoral Votes, stealing the White House away from President Barack Obama. Now, an updated version of their study has come to the same conclusion — but it intensifies the numbers behind a predicted Romney win.
Despite the fact that polls still show a dead-heat race (Obama is currently at 48.2 percent, with Romney capturing 47.3 percent of likely voters in the most recent Real Clear Politics average), an updated election model shows an even larger gap between the Electoral College votes that Romney and Obama are projected to win. According to Bickers and Berry, the Republican challenger is projected to take 330 of the 558 votes, while Obama is expected to capture only 208 of them.

With 270 as the major number needed for any candidate to win, this clearly shows Obama far from the mark, sending Romney — at least theoretically — to victory come November. While the model did not change, Bickers’ and Berry’s analysis is based on updated economic data, which clearly helped sway the projection even further in Romney’s favor.
The University of Colorado Boulder web site has more about how the model works:
While many election forecast models are based on the popular vote, the model developed by Bickers and Berry is based on the Electoral College and is the only one of its type to include more than one state-level measure of economic conditions. They included economic data from all 50 states and the District of Columbia. [...]
The Bickers and Berry model includes both state and national unemployment figures as well as changes in real per capita income, among other factors. The new analysis includes unemployment rates from August rather than May, and changes in per capita income from the end of June rather than March. It is the last update they will release before the election. [...]
In addition to state and national unemployment rates, the authors analyzed changes in personal income from the time of the prior presidential election. Research shows that these two factors affect the major parties differently: Voters hold Democrats more responsible for unemployment rates, while Republicans are held more responsible for fluctuations in personal income.
“We continue to show that the economic conditions favor Romney even though many polls show the president in the lead,” Bickers notes. “Other published models point to the same result, but they looked at the national popular vote, while we stress state-level economic data.”

Obama is on a three-day trip during which he will campaign in California and Ohio as well as attend the establishment of the Cesar Chavez National Monument. Photo Credit: AFP/Getty Images
According to the prediction, Romney will carry New Mexico, North Carolina, Virginia, Iowa, New Hampshire, Colorado, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Florida. On the flip side, Obama will take Michigan and Nevada.
Of course, Bickers and Berry caution those wedded to the data. Despite being correct for the past eight elections, there are some factors worth noting. The model has an average error rate of five states and 28 Electoral College votes. Plus, states that are close may end up being impacted by unexpected factors not included in the model.
Now, let’s get back to that record of accuracy mentioned earlier in this piece. The state-based economic data used by the researchers has been available since 1980, according to the university’s web site. When the data is applied to past elections, retroactively, it correctly chooses all of the winners. Most notably, it even correctly estimated the 2000 outcome, when Al Gore won the popular vote, but George W. Bush won the Electoral College.
In the end, though, anything is possible. Slight and unexpected changes could turn the entire scenario on its head. Still, the model — considering its viability — is worth paying attention to.

Sounds like “genuine imitation”, “jumbo shrimp”, or “reality television”.
I wonder how much money these researchers made trying to come up with a model that predicted that their guy would win.

Posted on October 8, 2012 at 12:33pmActually, this is a major part of good computer models, as evidenced by the man made global warming models NOT being able to correctly predict the climate based on their factors over the course of the last several thousand years. How else would you recommend testing whether you are including the correct factors and weighting them correctly if they can’t predict times when you KNOW the outcome. I’m not saying it is sufficient by itself, you could still have mere coincidences, but if you can’t “predict the past” if you will, you have no hope of predicting the future.

Let me guess: you attended a government (aka a “public”) school, right?
“Retroactively predict” is an absolutely valid testing method. If a model can be constructed that gets EVERY historical event correct (in this case back to 1080), then it could be considered a good model – that is NOT the same thing as saying it is 100% accurate for the future.
It simply compares past performance with future achievement – which is another reason why so many who voted for Obama in the past will vote for Romney this time.
Let’s try another scenario: suppose I want to market a software model to predict the Super Bowl winner. Obviously, I could not use this season to test it, since this season is only just begun. However, if there were a specific body of statistics that I could plug into the program, and regardless of what those statistics I plugged in, the model selected EVERY Super Bowl winner since 1980, would you go to Vegas and bet against it? Or would you be more willing to put your money on my model?

The Rasmussen report, the most accurate of all the polling outfits, has a brand new electoral college map on their site which takes into account the Romney bump from his outstanding debate performance. There are a total of 10 toss up states of which Romney leads in 6. If he maintains that lead until election day he will win 270 E.C. votes and our long national nightmare will be over. The people are beginning to realize the truth in Margret Thatchers’ observation… “The trouble with socialism is that sooner or later you run out of other peoples money”.

Posted on October 31, 2012 at 11:44amI’d like to point out that “since 1980″ isn’t a fact. What the article fails to mention is that Bickers and Barry have invented an entirely new model for this election. Therefore, their model has predicted nothing. Also, Bickers was only a student when this project began. He’s not behind the invention of the original model. And Barry is barely even 30years old. That should tell you something about how long he’s been involved.
One more thing: In seven out of eight if the elections, the original model was off by more than 7%.

Posted on October 8, 2012 at 10:06amThe call of the day is to abandon all the work of the liberals and support conservative ideals. And millions are making plans, through educating themselves, to do just that come November 6th. “Millions”, I say. Millions! People who have never voted before are now registered and prepared to take a stand for the sake of their freedom. Wow! The nation is divided as never before over the issues of the day. I almost have to laugh at the response. Threaten to take away freedom and the nation wakes up. There will likely be more years of voting to come. And we will see what happens this year. But the rousing response to liberalism is impressive.
We get to vote our mind once, twice, three times and more. It’s kind or like a restart when elections come along. We get to keep chosing what kind of leadership we want. But there is an election that many of those millions are missing.
Threaten America with a loss of freedom to do anything they want and they come out swinging. Yet few pay attention to the on going, second by second election regarding the eternal freedom. They select leaders over the “stuff” of life in the body. But what about the election of who is Lord of their eternity?
What would America look like if the people were as worried about voting for satan or Jesus? Satan (I had to capitalize the name cause it was the first word in the sentence, sorry) is the king of lies, rebellion, corruption and eternal stupidity. Jesus is King of eternal righ

Pick a side! Take a stand! Woud you rather have Dems spending your country into a crisis or the Reps cutting taxes, revving up the economy and reducing spending? Romney has the corect mix of tax cuts and spending cuts that will allow and promote economic growth. As far as the debt goes I am nervous for the next 20 years and what it portends. Debt on this scale is super bad, it is going to be next to impossible to grow your way out of this… maybe hyper-inflation will take care of it. I am really nervous about any outcome when it comes to the US debt crisis, problem is Obama isn’t !!!

And who isn’t in support of “revving up the economy”? The debt will continue to grow under Romney. Whose fault will that be? He will deficit spend. Whose fault will that be? He will raise the debt ceiling. Whose fault will that be? The government will topple in Syria and be taken over by even more radical Islamists. Whose fault will that be? If Romney wins, you have to defend rather than support. Good luck with that, because you righttards have set a new standard when it comes to baseless accusation and personal attacks. Here’s a good example: “The country’s never been more divided than it is under Romney.”

Posted on October 8, 2012 at 9:31amThis verifies what I have been thinking. Of course we know the MSM is skewing most polls Dem to favor the president. But what I find more interesting is how TONE-DEAF the president is being about the REAL SUFFERING in this nation. Two points with regard to that:
1. Obama keeps saying “We are headed in the right direction, we just need some more time.”
HE IS SINCERE WHEN HE SAYS THAT! The “right direction” for America, (by HIS ideology), is a BIG DOWNGRADE! But he is a WORD-TWISTER; -A Master of making comments that can be interpreted ONE WAY by the general public, (AND manipulated by the MSM to turn minds).
2. The Americans who KNOW THAT, and WON’T ACCEPT IT, will NEVER vote for him. I think his stradegy is to foster as much VOTER FRAUD as he can, to run up the POPULAR VOTE TOTAL; And then, when it is clear that Mitt Romney won by the Electoral College, create a TOTAL UPROAR, Tear the country up with chaos, and hope that the results get bound up in court, and that the court fears the chaos, and blinks, gives in to him, and gives him a win by FIAT!

“Their model is NOT the official model..”
There is no OFFICIAL Model. That’s why it’s called a “Model”. It’s all speculation/ guessing regardless of the source.

Posted on October 8, 2012 at 10:19amI can’t wait for the Biden/Paul thing.
NOTHING Ryan says or proposes stands up to the SLIGHTEST scrutiny.
Biden may be gaffe prone but he’s not timid.

“I always thought that I was okay with arithmetic. [Paul] can run circles around me, and he is honest, he is straightforward, he is sincere. And the budget that he came forward with is just like Paul Ryan. It is a sensible, straightforward, honest, serious budget and it cut the budget deficit just like we did, by $4 trillion.. Erskine Bowles (D) (Huffpo)
“Ryan is absolutely sincere about wanting to reduce the budget and “his budget is a legitimate proposal”… Barry Obama (interview with Matt Lauer)
PS.. also looking forward to Biden’s “lack of timidness” in the debate.

Posted on October 8, 2012 at 9:10amRomney would win even bigger if he would tie Obama and Bush together on their spending habits and bailout policies. Romney is not like Bush, Obama is.
