Fla. School District Lets Pro-Obama Group Register Students to Vote, Deliver Speeches

A Florida school district is in hot water after it reportedly allowed a pro-Obama organization to register students to vote and give speeches to classes. It also denied the Romney campaign similar considerations.

Pasco County Schools told Fox News that Organizing for America volunteers were able to access roughly six high school and middle school campuses. The organization also attempted to gain access to at least three additional campuses but were shut down by on-campus officials, according to email correspondence obtained by Fox News.

“They did register students to vote…We don’t know how many children were registered – (but) we have an ongoing investigation,” school district spokesman John Mann told Fox News.

As if it wasn’t bad enough that Organizing for America sought to take advantage of high school and middle school students by influencing their vote, a former teacher was also permitted to give a number of pro-Obama speeches to high school seniors.

“She got into six classrooms and gave pro-Obama speeches – like way off to the left…That got out to parents and parents complained,” said James Mathieu, general counsel for the Pasco County Republican Party.

Matthieu said he has filed a complaint with the Florida Division of Elections and notified the Florida Attorney General’s office.

“We have a liberal culture in our school system and we know that,” he told Fox News. “The problem is someone has used false credentials, false pretenses and there is a security issue.”

Matthieu said Organizing for America officials “used false pretenses” and identified themselves to school officials as officials with the local elections office.

But Mann says he is not aware of any misrepresentation by the pro-Obama officials, saying “they identified themselves as being with Organizing for America.”

As Fox News’ Todd Starnes points out, there seems to be evidence proving otherwise:

However, according to an email obtained by Fox News – school officials acknowledged there may have been some deceit.

“In at least one case, those individuals said they were from the Pasco Supervisor of Elections Office,” wrote staff member Paula Lesko. “Unfortunately the SOE said that is not the case.”

So why did school officials allow a partisan organization to mingle with students?

“That will come out in our final investigation,” Mann said.

Another significant issue was the former teacher’s pro-Obama address. Local Republicans asked for equal access. At first, school officials agreed – but later reversed their decision.

There was discussion of allowing the Romney campaign come in to satisfy “equal access” but officials decided against it because it would mean an additional “violation of board policy.”

Organizing for America has since apologized to Pasco County Schools, according to the Tampa Bay Times. Additionally, the teacher who delivered the Obama-centric speeches has been relieved of duty.

ACLU should take the school district to court for their interjecting their god into school. That is against the constitution.

Actually, middle school students could be a good voting block for the democrats. They are easily impressionable and don”t know much about how the world works. Yeah, it may be against the constitution and all but when has that stopped them? If anybody asks to see their ID, they can just call them racist

000DEGREES, yes, apparently the Florida Middle Schools are full of 18 year old students. They are likely the result of the inability to fire bad union protected teachers. The good news is that as long as they stay in school, the longer they will not enter the ranks of the unemployed.

Not surprised. We lived in that district, son graduated from one of the schools and wife worked for them. Very bad district and teachers. Communist influence abounds. You were supposed to bring supplies in but nothing could belong to the students. All had to go into a collective, down to the mat kindergarten kids took naps on.

This is more common than is reported.

As long as teachers and administrators are unionized and part of the democratic machine this will continue.

The entire federal education system needs to be taken down and given completely to the states. Until that is done, schools will continue to be liberal propaganda machines.

Great, but what about the one that made the decision to allow this is in the first place? Or was it a “board” so that no one individual can be blamed?

I complained about a teachers agenda at community college. She toned down her rhetoric, but it still exists to discredit Romney. Bashing one candidate is fine as long as you bash the other as well (if you’re a teacher).

For liberal teachers I think “relieved of duty” is code for “got a raise and a promotion to management”. So very sad for the young Children today. : (

Anyway- 2days later i’m in line at a small, neighborhood store and the girl in front of me is babbling and cursing into her cell phone even while buying her merchandise… When she leaves i say to the cashier “Huh, kids these days”
Cashier says “Naw- she ain’t no kid.. been comin here for years. Probably about 32- 33yrs old. Kindergarten teacher.”

Also, it’s important to mention that Pasco is considered to be an I-4 corridor county. For those unfamiliar with Florida politics, South Florida is reliably Democrat, North Florida is reliably Republican, and the I-4 Corridor, which runs the center of the state from Tampa through Orlando to Daytona, is continually the portion of the state that swings the state for either candidate. It’s not surprising then that the Obama campaign would be targeting and area like Pasco.

That’s not to say that no one around here is voting for Obama. Maybe they’re just too ashamed of him to let people know they support him. It’s more of a problem that they denied the Romney campaign similar considerations. Now, there isn’t wrong with registering 18 year old’s to vote, but the Romney campaign should have also been allowed to do the same, AND give pro-Romney speeches.

Since the Romney campaign wasn’t allowed to present their side, then the Obama campaign should also be denied.

No Diane, it’s not. Politics like this do not belong in public school. If a private school wants to do something like this, fine. But for me, who has no kids but pays rather expensive property taxes so other people can educate their kids, it’s rather infuriating that a school would use the money to allow Romney or Obama campaign supporter the rather expensive “school time” to talk campaign politics. What if I support a little known third party candidate? Will they be invited? What if there’s 20 candidates running? Do we allow all twenty of them to distract our kids from their education?

Campaigns of any kind should not be allowed access to public schools, just like religions are not allowed.
