DALLAS (AP) — A Dallas woman who super-glued her 2-year-old daughter’s hands to a wall also beat the girl so badly that she suffered bleeding on her brain, a doctor testified Monday during the mother’s sentencing hearing.

Elizabeth Escalona faces up to life in prison after pleading guilty in July to attacking her daughter, Jocelyn Cedillo, last September. Police say the 23-year-old mother attacked the toddler due to potty training problems.

During a sentencing hearing that began Monday, prosecutors presented gruesome photos and details of the attack.

Jocelyn was hospitalized for about one week with injuries that included bleeding on her brain, a fractured rib, severe bruises and others likely caused by direct blows, according to Dr. Amy Barton, a former child abuse specialist at Children’s Medical Center of Dallas.

“When I think about the time involved in that and what that scene must have looked like, it’s overwhelming,” Barton said.

Dallas Police Sr. Cpl. Abel Lopez, who interviewed Escalona after the attack, showed a bottle of super glue taken out of the family’s apartment as well as a section of an apartment wall with Jocelyn’s handprints.

The sentencing hearing is scheduled to continue Tuesday. Escalona’s attorney, Angie N’Duka, said she hadn’t decided if her client would take the stand. A state district judge will decide her punishment.

In a videotaped interview with Lopez after the attack, Escalona insisted over and over: “I’m taking the blame.” Lopez said Monday that Escalona wouldn’t immediately explain why she was taking the blame, even as doctors fighting to save her daughter’s life needed information about what had happened.

“She never really asked” about Jocelyn’s condition, Lopez said. “I had to tell her.”

Escalona’s mother, Ofelia Escalona, testified about her panic and confusion when she arrived at the family home after the attack and found Jocelyn lying on the floor, taking shallow breaths. Under questioning from prosecutor Eren Price, Ofelia Escalona acknowledged that her daughter had also hit her several times when Elizabeth Escalona was growing up.

The grandmother said she came over after her daughter called her. She said she could see something wrong in her daughter’s face.

“I had my daughter in front of me, but she was not all there,” Ofelia Escalona said, her voice often breaking throughout her testimony.

She picked Jocelyn up off the floor and noticed the child had soiled her underwear, the grandmother said. She changed Jocelyn, ran with the girl to her car, and told her son to drive them to the hospital.

But Jocelyn then started talking – asking for food – leading her grandmother to believe the girl didn’t need to go to the emergency room. She told her son to turn around.

“I made a horrible mistake,” Ofelia Escalona said.

Testimony then concluded for the day because Ofelia Escalona had to pick up another one of her grandchildren from school. The grandmother is now taking care of her daughter’s five children, including a baby born this year.

As testimony ended, Elizabeth Escalona used tissues to wipe her eyes before sheriff’s deputies escorted her from the courtroom.

This is absolutely horrible – some people are just pieces of real crap. At the very least I hope she never see’s her kids again. Problem with that is, unless the grandmother wants to keep them, her kids will be put into state care. (which isn’t always the best) No mention of the father(s) at all in this story either. Where the heck is he at?

23 years old with 5 kids already? She started young. Babies having babies – and people wonder why so many turn out like this woman did.

  That’s what I was thinking….23 years old and she already has 5 children? I live in the Dallas area and I see all the time a woman with no man around, with 5-8 children and the older ones are taking care of the younger ones so mom can shop unimpeded. They hit the thrift store that I go to on the 99 cent day (where a certain color tag is only 99 cents) and FILL the cart and don’t even look at sizes, just grab everything with that tag color. You know they’re going to have a yard sale and charge $2 for each item. they don’t care about disciplining the children, and the store has to make announcements in English and Spanish to not let your children run around or go to the toy section by themselves. They didn’t want those children for any other reason than more benifits.

What she did is really not all that bad. We all know women who have decided they didn’t like their child, or even want them anymore, so they paid someone to help them tear their arms and legs off, then rip their body apart and crush their head.

I know of one woman who just decided to have someone help her drown her child in a saline solution which slowly burned and dissolved the child’s body and of course finally killed it.

There are even some women who decide after their kids are older that they don’t want them anymore, and since it is too hard to dismember their body when they are older they just have somone help them shove a sharp object into the back of their skull and then scramble up their child’s brain and suck it out, killing them in the process.

So, is what this mother did really all that bad? Why is she going to prison? All the women I told you about above, and the people who helped them, were completely protected by the law who said they had every right to dis-member, dissolve, and scramble the brains of their living children because they didn’t want them anymore.

I hope you are able to see the hyopocrisy. Vote Pro-Life.

  You are so completely right! That is exactly why we have this problem. We are being taught that life is of no value. So if you don’t think the most innocent and vulnerable deserve respect and protection then why would you feel that way about them as they get bigger? This country has devalued human life. Remember when Obama said,”I don’t want my daughter punished with a baby.” He does not value his own grandchildren. Yes, VOTE PRO-LIFE!

You people don’t understand the culture of her country. It permits her glueing her child’s hands to the wall. If she can’t do that to her child in America…why didn’t we tell her. We are all guilty. No one knows what mind altering desperation this mother felt on her illegal trip across the Mexican/American border. Now she has five and she had better be advised that she cannot glue the baby to the wall while she goes trolling for another father or she may do it because of her culture.

This isn’t a Mother, this is a very sick person that has done such an evil act to her own little defenseless girls. this is a crime where you don’t get so many years and you’re on your way. I pray for these poor young girls that have been betrayed by the person in their world that is supposed to do everything and anything to protect them. This is such a betrayal to these little ones. poor children, my heart really goes out to them. They will be scared for life inside as we’ll as outside. Please pray for them.

This woman should get the death penalty… we shouldn’t support her nasty self for the rest of her life. The child should be given to a good family (if there is such a thing) for adoption. This monster needs to be put to death. There are too many like her out there that are never reported.

I googled her and found much as the same information here, but there were more pictures of her. There isn’t mention of a daddy to be found, and now the State has custody of all five kids.

The pictures show her with tattoos and piercings, and I’ll bet that she a drug abuser.

  Unfortunately, women like this know only one thing……..spread their legs for any and all and have so many children, they never have to work for a living, because the child care checks just keep rolling in.
  It’s time to stop paying for all these children and take them away from this type woman and let people who want a child to love have them. Then sterilize these women after 2 children on the chance she might actually love them rather than using them as welfare check income.

These kind of stories make me feel like there’s an empty pit in my stomach. How terrible that this woman has five children, (one an infant), and there isn’t mention of a daddy in the story.

That poor little two year girl to have “mommy” do such a horrible thing to her.
