Texas Students Rebelling Against Electronic Tracking Cards Now Facing ‘Consequences’

Before the end of the 2011-2012 school year, TheBlaze reported a Texas school district’s plans to track students using radio frequency and their I.D. cards. With classes in the San Antonio district school now well underway and the system implemented on Oct. 1, some students are rebelling against the required cards.

John Jay High School and Anson Jones Middle School within the Northside Independent School District issued each student a card using radio frequency to ID their location in an effort to boost attendance. Earlier this year, TheBlaze reported officials saying they expected to gain more funding from the state due to improved attendance levels.

Students picked up their badges at registration at the beginning of the year and were reportedly threatened with suspension or school transfer if they didn’t use the badge. One student refusing to use the RFID card said she was denied the ability to vote for Homecoming king and queen.

WND reports Andrea Hernandez rejecting the RFID card for religious and privacy reasons. Still, she tried to use her old card to supplement required identification.

“About two weeks ago when I went to cast my vote for homecoming king and queen I had a teacher tell me I would not be allowed to vote because I did not have the proper voter ID,” she said according to WND. “I had my old student ID card which they originally told us would be good for the entire four years we were in school. He said I needed the new ID with the chip in order to vote.”

Hernandez also told WND she is not alone in rebelling against the badges. Other students have joined her as well. Hernandez’s father, Steve, is also taking issue with the badge. Eventually, his daughter was permitted to use her old badge but there are “consequences,” Deputy Superintendent Ray Galindo wrote to her father, to not having the tracking card. Not being able to vote for Homecoming court was one of them.

“He told me in a meeting that if my daughter would proudly wear her student ID card around her neck so everyone could see, he would be able to quietly remove her chip from her student ID card,” Steve Hernandez explained. “He went on to say as part of the accommodation my daughter and I would have to agree to stop criticizing the program and publicly support … it. I told him that was unacceptable because it would imply an endorsement of the district’s policy and my daughter and I should not have to give up our constitutional rights to speak out against a program that we feel is wrong.”

Steve Hernandez is not the only parent to protest the chips. At a late September school board meeting, several individuals came forward to voice concerns. Watch this news report after the event:

Heather Fazio, executive director of Texans for Accountable Government who spoke after the school district event in the video above, also highlighted to WND one of the privacy concerns regarding the cards. She said she was able to obtain private information, like home addresses, about the students through a Freedom of Information Act Request. She believes this information could be exploited by potential predators.

The organization ”Chip Free Schools” writes in its position paper that it sees tracking students with RFID cards as not only a threat to civil liberties and privacy but also notes the potential for health risk from electromagnetic radiation.

Even with these complaints though, the district’s spokesperson Pascual Gonzales told Wired last month that opposition to the cards as a whole has been minimal. The school district will evaluate how the pilot program goes and could institute it in the NISD’s more than 100 other schools in the future.

It is important to note that the RFID cards stop tracking students when they leave campus.

Although Wired reports some saying the cards are tracking the kids like “cattle,” Gonzales said they are used to surveillance.

“The kids are used to being monitored,” Gonzalez told Wired, noting the districts more than 200 cameras.

every government OVERintervention starts with GOOD intentions.

The FDA keeps your food afe but in the end you can’t run a lemonade stand.
The EPA protects the beaches from errosion but now won’t let you build sandcastles.
The PARKs commission protects wild animals but shut down highway/dam/bridge building products for tiny spiders or minnows.

      This is no different.

Some parents CHOOSE to register/track their little kids to prevent/help with kidnapping.
Companies require photo ID’s to be worn on property for protection.
Americans flags can’t be flown in some locations due to size and “offending” someone.
This list goes on and on…

Little by little, the liberals and primarily Progressives are destroying ALL of our freedoms.

The article says the students are only tracked while ON CAMPUS,
much like your dog with a shock collar / infared fence I suppose.

As long as it is only used AT SCHOOL, I don’t see much difference than the rest of the list…

“I had my old student ID card which they originally told us would be good for the entire four years…”

OK, what Senior (12th grade) wants to walk around wearing a picture taken of themselves from 9th grade?

When I was growing up we didn’t have a “student location” issue. If you didn’t have a good reason for being someplace else other than where you were supposed to be it was off to the Gym locker room for a little one-on-one with the wooden paddle with holes drilled in it.

These progressive teachers stuff leftie politics into the minds of young people and wonder why there in no discipline. “Spare the rod, spoil the Child” means just that. If you spare the rod you will spoil the Child. It only takes once to straighten up a misfit. But, you most catch them in the act so that you both know it’s justified. Never punish unless you both know, without any doubt, know all the facts before hand.

BTW…. in 9th grade I was allowed to bring in my Remington 241A rifle to school to refinish the stock. Rode my bike to school, dropped by the Principles office, removed the firing mechanism, worked on it for 3 days, returned to the office for the firing mechanism, installed it and rode my bike home. Trust is a 2 way street. I earned that trust first and I was trusted.

I used to live in that district where that high school was the one the neighbor kids attended. The number of gangs and the number of kids who skipped school or would leave the school once they got there is unbelievable. If the kids do not attend school at least half the day, the school doesn’t get paid for their attendance at all, therefore since so many were cutting school or classes, it cut back on the amount the school got for teacher pay, building new classes or schools, in the fastest growing school district in the San Antonio area. since this doesn’t track the kids if they are off campus, basically it tells them if the kid has wandered off campus, and the parents can be notified that the child they think is at school is not at school. Since parents seem to feel the school is responsible if something happens when they think their kid is at school and isn’t, seems a good way to let the school know if the kid has left and they can notify the parent(s) they kid is not where they think he/she is. And in that school district it is a big problem. When I lived there, I quickly realized that most of the kids in our apartment complex would use the excuse they missed the bus to skip school since their parent(s) were usually gone to work before the school buses came. So I went to various parents and kids and told them to come to my apartment and get me if they missed the bus and I would take them to school. The parents liked the idea, the kids tested me at first, but it worked.

These kids need a Voter ID to vote for Homecoming King and Queen and need to have it on them at all times or face being punished. Yet, we do not need to show any ID of any kind to vote for President of the United States of America!! Let, me tell ya’ll something, I went to school in the same district, and they’re testing this out on the poorer kids who much isn’t expected from anyway. They think no one will complain if the fed dollars roll in. It’s not right and these kids are realizing what a nazi state begins to feels like. What tolerant, open government liberals we have running our schools and tagging the kids like animals in San Antonio! The parents don’t even know what the heck is going on. Most are probably on government assistance anyway or the kids are here illegally or as anchor babies.
So fair. So wonderful for the kids to have more money for their goverment-led lunch programs and curriculum where most will leave high school hating the US, and prepared to party it up in college where further debt is created and liberal indoctrination is completed.

IF it is meant to help with locating the students for increased attandence purposes, why would it start and stop tracking them upon entering and leaving the campus. I have a few possible anwsers.

      1. The teachers can’t even manage to mark children present anymore they are so incompetent.
      2. The school district is lying.

Well I won’t make you wait till my next post to find out but my opinion is… the answer is #2 and not all teachers are incompetent. Just most of them.

First of all you are all being tracked with your cell-phone. We all gave up that privacy a long time ago. Second, from a technology standpoint this is awesome. No more calling out names for roll, or wondering where students skip class to. And third, yup they herd our children like animals, but they have done this for years without electronics. What makes this any different? We should have stood up a long time ago when we saw them being brainwashed with liberal policies.

Cell phone is a choice. For most folks, their child must attend a public school–by law. Therefore they are removing your right to choose whether you want one of these ‘chips’ ‘attached’ to your child. If the parents don’t want this they should be able to opt out. Period. But just like ‘sex ed’, it’ll never happen.

The only way you are not tracked is if you’re off the grid entirely. THINK ABOUT IT! But hen they skip school and leave the card at home the school will know they are not there since it only registers when they are on campus. And if the parent doesn’t call in an excuse for the kid not being there by a certain hour, the school calls the parent to make sure the parent is aware the kid is not at school. That is to ensure that the kid isn’t wandering the street while the parent thinks he/she is safely at school. It doesn’t always work, because about 40 years ago, when my younger brother ran off with his girl friend, they asked me to call the school and tell them I was her mother and she had stayed home sick. Unfortunately, I did not know her that well and kinda blew it when they asked me what grade she was in and I told them the wrong grade. They wanted me to help them have time to get out of town before her mother found out they were eloping. But then they got away but since both were minors they found they couldn’t get anyone to marry them anyhow, so they came home and told everyone they had gone to Mexico and gotten married and just lived together until they were old enough to really get married. We were all basically kids back then.

People think a lot of technology. Take it from an EE PhD. This would be very difficult and expensive to track outside of a 100 ft range of the school. These chips are powered by the rf energy (no battery included) so they need to be in close proximity to the rf power source. Even the battery powered ones are still very limited in range. Also, they must be within range of a receiver which is very limited. There are no ubiquitous rfid coverage areas like cell phone coverage. These are simply for attendance “money” purposes. Safety is a joke since all you have to do is take it off your neck while in the school and you are still “there”. Also, you could cut this thing out easily. It would be easier and cheaper to use some facial recognition software to verify attendance. But how about this…we make parents accountable for making sure the kids are at school. Take away their tax exemption if the kids more than X days of school each year. Since we can’t appeal to their intellect to make their kids go to school, hit them in the pocket book. This is a waste of money and a breach of privacy.

U want to implement chip tracking?Fine before school you take it from your locker and wear it,After school it goes back into your locker. But if the intent from the school says you must have it with you to and from school I have a problem with that.

I have a problem with any tracking device on my kid that I didn’t put there. Unless a child/teen has a problem with discipline or skipping school, they don’t need a chip to track their every movements. I say find a way to disable it….leave it in the locker….sue for violation of the constitution. GISD better NEVER institute this or I’ll be there telling them my kid won’t wear it. I’ll home school.

In your face atheists! This is real deal deal. It won’t be long until we all will have tracking I.D.s and after awhile, they will become obsolete because they are too easily lost or stolen, so then comes the implant. However you atheists will have a choice… Right hand or forehead?

      @ Nesmond,

Right after a few bullies start flushing the smaller students ID cards down the toilets so the students location is the sewer system on the tracking computers the School Admins will change over to the implants. : (

Wow. Now we’re tagging our children like animals. Next they’ll be wearing those invisible fence dog collars to keep them in the classrooms…

““About two weeks ago when I went to cast my vote for homecoming king and queen I had a teacher tell me I would not be allowed to vote because I did not have the proper voter ID,…”

If only the election was much more important, then you would not need ID.

The kids should just claim to be democrats and this whole thing will go away.

Usually yes with RFID that typically works…. And that would be my FIRST action (quickly followed by chucking the thing in my locker and leaving it there until graduation…).

Don’t throw it in your locker – super glue it to a stray dog. At least make it fun.

Get the children used to being tracked and they will not question it as adults. This is evil, pure, plain and simple.

How long before they put these RFID chips in your drivers license?

If it has a ‘magnetic strip’ on the back of it — you can be assured it already is ‘chipped’ – all they have to do is ‘flip’ the GPS on it… If anyone needs a lil ‘lesson’ on technology used nefariously — pick up Brad Thor’s Black List –

      http://www.drivingrules.net/EDL/

“Many states offer a Real ID act compliant Enhanced drivers licenses or EDL. This means a small RFID chip is in the Card (EPC Gen2 chips). The card contains a unique number and barcode that link to a central file or database containing your info. Your info is not stored in the chip.

“On the Northern Border you have Washington, Michigan, New York, Vermont, In Canada, Ontatrio, and British Columbia.

“Minnesota, North Dakota, Idaho, New Hampshire, and Maine, are still working out the details.

“Southern Border states will be offering EDL as well like Arizona, Texas, and New Mexico

“State-issued enhanced drivers licenses (EDLs) provide proof of identity and U.S. citizenship, are issued in a secure process. They provide travelers with a low-cost, convenient alternative for entering the United States from Canada, Mexico or the Caribbean through a land or sea port of entry, in addition to serving as a permit to drive.

“Enhanced drivers licenses make it easier for U.S. citizens that travel to Canada and Mexico and will save you time at the Customs Booth upon your return to the United States.”
