Associated Press Publishes Odd Photo of Romney — Do You Think It Should Have?

UPDATE:

The Associated Press emailed TheBlaze a statement regarding the photo. It doesn’t explain much, only notes that the caption for the photo has been updated to note why the young girl behind the photo reacted the way she did:

The Associated Press on Monday took and distributed six photos of Gov. Romney’s visit to an elementary school in Fairfield, Va., to its member news organizations and customers.

One image showed Mr. Romney as he was crouching down to pose for a photo with the schoolchildren. The picture received a caption addition on Tuesday to better explain what was happening. The caption addition was as follows:

CLARIFIES THAT STUDENT IS REACTING BECAUSE MITT ROMNEY WILL BE POSING FOR A PHOTO DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF HER AND HER CLASSMATES – Republican presidential candidate, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney poses for photographs with students of Fairfield Elementary School, Monday, Oct. 8, 2012, in Fairfield, Va. A student, right, reacts as she realizes Romney will crouch down directly in front of her and her classmates for the group photo. (AP Photo/Evan Vucci)

TheBlaze asked for further clarification regarding the decision to publish the photo in the first place and has yet to hear back.

Original story below.

Sometimes the story of the moment during campaign season has nothing to do with what a candidate says, or even what is said about a candidate. Instead, it has to do with how the media captures a moment. And that includes pictures on the trail. Enter the Associated Press (AP).

The AP on Monday published a photo showing Romney at Fairfield Elementary School in Fairfield, VA, during a campaign stop. And while plenty of photos were taken, there’s one that’s grabbing attention. It portrays Romney bending over in front of a young girl who has a shocked look on her face. And there’s very little context given. Here’s the photo along with the AP’s caption:

Embarassing Mitt Romney Picture Bending Over Published by AP

There were other pictures taken, and they seem to give some sort of context (and shows the girl in the background is more excited than shocked):

Adding to the intrigue, as we pointed out on the blog this morning, the story of the visit to the school is quite touching. Via ABC:

FAIRFIELD, Va. – Mitt Romney ordered his motorcade to make an abrupt U-turn in rural Virginia today, after zipping by a group of elementary school students waving in the front yard of the school, so he could go back and meet them.

It was the candidate’s decision to make the impromptu stop, an aide said, Romney standing beside Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell as a group of roughly 100 squealing students, who had since retreated inside Fairfield Elementary School, were promptly marched back outside of the school house by an advance staffer.

β€œThanks for waving at me as I came by, I decided to come by and say β€˜hi’ to you guys,” Romney told the kids, many of whom were fourth- and fifth-graders.

ABC even published video:

A quick search of the AP news site, however, mentions nothing about the stop or the kind move by Romney.

That’s worth mentioning because there are those who are using the picture to paint the candidate in an aloof way.

“Needless to say, however, none of the kids was more surprised than the young girl in AP photographer Evan Vucci’s snapshot above, which is best when viewed without a single shred of context,” Gawker writes. And on Twitter, the photo garnered a caption that pokes fun at not only Romney, but also the New Yorker (which has used the “Christ, what an asshole” caption multiple times):

Embarassing Mitt Romney Picture Bending Over Published by AP

Now, it’s completely possible the photo is simply a benign attempt to capture a fun campaign moment. But considering the reaction thus far and the way some have seized on it to complete the narrative of a clumsy Romney, it does raise the question of: Might not the AP have foreseen such an embarrassing picture becoming campaign fodder and might it have been best not to publish?

Maybe. Maybe not. Your thoughts?

UPDATE:

It seems some journalism ethics experts aren’t too impressed with the AP’s decision to publish the photo:

Steve Manuel, senior lecturer at Penn State’s College of Communications and an award-winning photojournalist, said the AP must have known how the image would be perceived.

“In this photo, while it may appear funny, AP knows exactly what viewers are thinking,” he wrote in an email. “It’s not legitimate news. AP knows that viewers are going to chuckle and imagine what the little girl is seeing, and it makes Gov. Romney appear a bit foolish. That isn’t the purpose or mission of photojournalism. … Candidate or not, it is not the mission of a news organization to place anyone in a position to be ridiculed or made fun of. Reporting the news is, and this is not newsworthy.”

[...]

The AP may have entered a bit of a gray area with this one. The photo was not altered or manipulated in any apparent way. But the National Press Photographers Association code of ethics offers some guidance.

“Treat all subjects with respect and dignity,” it says. The code also says: “Be complete and provide context when photographing or recording subjects.”

The task of painstakingly capturing and cropping this photo for mass distribution was done with the intent of making the candidate (Mitt Romney) look weird and bizarre.

However, I suspect it’s real affect will be the continual eroding of the media’s, editor’s, and journalist’s credibility.

    Ironic.

Associated Press is a Jihad organ controlled by the House of Saud. They would prefer an obsequious dhimmi like Hussein Obama in the White House to the non-muslim like Romney.

Romney should not be seen expressing solidarity, sympathy, or support of any kind with any muslim nation or organization, including the deceptively-labeled “rebel groups”. Romney should make it clear to the Islamic Empire, that America will not tolerate jihad. He probably will not. He is probably deceived like the rest.

AP, Reuters, New Corp, The US Department of State β€” these are all tools of Jihad; owned and operated by the House of Saud.

I agree, the AP is just hurting their own credibility which is already on extremely thin ice…I can’t think of a single “thinking” person that uses only one source for information anymore and in my mind the AP is only one of them because it is “associated” press. The second I see AP, I go searching for more information to corroborate the information because I don’t trust it at all. I have a friend who writes for them and I know for a fact that it is “censored” in a way due to the fact that if they try to publish anything “controversial” in a truthful way they would be risking their job…that is an unseen pressure, but has the same effect of outright censorship.

Despite the AP’s immature, Beavis and Butthead-style “funny picture”, they have failed in attempting to blunt the significance of young Americans rushing to meet their future president.

Keep in mind, these beautiful, hopeful, energetic children are the very reason Romney is in this fight; to protect their lives and future dreams. Thinking people know their future depends on adults taking quick corrective actions now. Looks like it was a big day for the kids to meet their governor and a presidential candidate in a surprise visit, and might even spur some interesting discussions and personal essays for their next lesson on government.

No “Rational” Man…you don’t bring kids into “goofy” political jokes with sexual inuendo.

Now I know that the left loves to sexualize children..I mean look at GLSEN (that’s the group founded by Obama’s Czar of Safe Schools, Kevin Jennings) who wants to teach school age children extreme sex acts like f*sting.. because it’s all in the name of education, “anti-bullying” and good fun right?

Bottom line “Rational”Man…leave the kids out of the left’s mockery of conservative figures.

Where the left has to fabricate this kind of thing to mock Romney…all we have to do is look at examples like “mmm, mmm, mmm, Barack Hussein Obama” to see just how creepy and exploitative of children the left can really be.

HKS….the enemedia doesn’t publish unflattering pictures of the Obamas. The Obamas are sacrosanct to the liberal mind. If any do make it out it’s usually from a conservative or libertarian source. And there’s the rub to loosely quote the bard- because the AP asserts itself as a credible news source that’s supposedly unbiased.

Partisan websites are what they are, no bones are made..but a supposed “unbiased” news source like the AP? That’s very different.

I recall the AP ran a story about a supposed “fashion faux pas” of Ann Romney’s not too long ago. Have you seen the AP do that type of story with Moochelle Antionette O.? Not even when she wore $600 sneakers to a food bank.
Liberal “hypocracy” (sic) [hat tip: "Rational" Man] knows no shame.

The Left is begging and praying for a Dukakis moment. If it doesn’t happen, they’ll make it up.

Ask any wedding photographer, when you take 1,000 pictures a minute, you catch every contortion and in-between facial expression. Just press pause on your TV and you’ll see how ugly people are when they are inbetween facial expressions. :)

They keep throwing stuff against the wall hoping something sticks. One more strong debate performance and Romney will be teflon… nothing the press throws at him will stick in the public’s mind. Soon, they’ll start photoshoping pictures to create the impressions they want to create.
