For those not familiar, Glenn Beck’s daughter got married this past weekend in the Finger Lakes area of Upstate New York. Following the wedding, Beck experienced his “Father of the Bride” (as in the Steve Martin movie) moment when his SUV, which he’d parked at the top of a hill by his rented cottage, went sliding down a slippery hill and barrel-rolled several times. The vehicle, thankfully, had no one inside and as it rolled down the hill to the amazement of his wife and children, Beck just said “let it go.”
Right after my daughter’s wedding it was — have you ever had one of those days. You’ve never had one of these days. Imagine having one of these days where the stress is just going, and this could be a TV commercial. This is father of the bride. This is like the end of the father of bride. Everything you’ve done. It’s in God’s hands now. I got to the door I’m not kidding you. I got to the door of my house.
We were staying at this place my daughter got up in the finger lakes in New York. We’ve rented this little cottage there on the lake and we’ve just parked this SUV on the hill. Well it had been raining. I didn’t live in California who knew about mudslides. So opening up the door, and I see my wife who’s gotten my son out of the car. I’m there with my daughter holding her in my arms because it’s after the wedding. I open up the door, and my wife says, “Help! Help!”
I see my wife dressed in her evening gown from the wedding, and she’s holding on to the door handle of the car as the car is starting to slide down the hill, and I just said “Let it go honey.” And the car rolled down the hill, and rolled. And flipped.
I said to the kids I honestly said to the kids, “Well let’s go say our prayers, and go to bed.” It was just one of those days. I watched my car roll down the hill, literally roll. Just like a movie. I just stood there. And I’m like, “All right let’s go to bed.”
I got up the next morning. My son was down all the windows were broken out of it. It’s totaled. The axle is bent. It was horrible, and my son was already downstairs, and he was out by the shoreline of the lake, and he said dad, you have to see the car. And I went oh, yeah. I’ll look at it later…

Then again, American cars don’t hold their value well, and I could see repairs exceeding the cost of the vehicle depending on mileage.

There has to be significant structural intrusion for the airbags to deploy, which there doesn’t appear to be. In rollovers the side bags normally always inflate but Ford’s safety canopy system monitors weight and seating position of the occupants. Since there were none, that’s why they didn’t deploy.

It really depends on who you work for.
If you worked for a company like Walmart, then your not taking Money out of anyones pocket, like they would have you believe. If fact Walmart Management will swear, you are raping them, when you get a 10 cent raise after your one year anniversary. But your pay has gone up from $8.00 an hour to $8.10 an hour, and with that .10 cent raise every year, you’ll be making $9.00 an hour in 10 years. Maybe you’ll get lucky and become a Department Manager and make $10.00 an hour, but be prepared to be at Walmart 60 to 70 hours a week, but only paid for 40 hours. And no matter how many hours you put in, or how hard you work, you will never make Bonus or move up in the company.
And all those Millionaires in the Corporate Offices in Arkansas, that gave you that job, you will never see them, meet them or ever talk to them……..

Oct. 10, 2012 at 3:12pm@dangarh01……..Continued from above
Now in fairness not all Big Companies and Rich People are like this.
When I was kid, I worked fo Publix Grocery Store, The owner Mr.Jenkins looked after the employees. But when he died, and the kids took over the business, that all changed. And not for the better.
If you work for a small business, those people are not Rich, for the most part. in fact, most are in serious debt. And if small business fails the country will be in a lot of trouble. Most small businesses pay 50% of what they take in, to Taxes, State, Federal and Local. Big companies and Rich People don’t pay anything close to that. And that doesn’t make Rich People evil, their just given more loopholes in the Tax Code. Big Companies and Rich People can afford to pay Lawyers and Law Firms, Large sums of money, to find those loopholes, to save themselves even larger sums of money. Small Businesses can’t afford to do that.
So the People that Pay most Poor People, are not even Rich, their just getting by themselves. Because most employment comes from Small Businesses, that are hanging on by their fingernails…..
Stop listening to Rush…….

His truck was parked across the driveway at the base of the hill. Fortunately hr rolled out from under the truck just in time for him to watch my truck roll right into the side of his truck. My tailgate got dented while the entire right side of his truck got smashed. My daughter was on the highway shortly after that & she passed a truck like mine with a dent in the tailgate. Oct. 9, 2012 at 11:53amCars rolling = GOOD TIMES…
I had the treat of experiencing this at 45 mph. after the city Grated my old gravel road one day while I was out of town… Was driving back home, noticed the road was “iffy” so I slowed down by 5 mph. and after about 10 sec. my cars rear-end slid around to the front, and my car “drifted” into a ditch that worked as a lever and catapulted my car end-over-end… It was quite exciting…. Thankfully I didn’t have an air-bag (this was over 10 years ago) so I got to experience it without being knocked out by an airbag…
Minus the financial loss of the car, it was a fun little experience… Car was destroyed (much worse than Beck’s Big Station wagon, which lets face it, an SUV is nothing but a taller station wagon) which was not cool, but I walked away COMPLETELY un-scratched, no bumps, bruises, cuts… nothing…
You gotta love the ’89 Chevy Corsica…. That car could take a lickin…. I never would have imagined that roughly 40 mph. could flip a car…. But now I know, and knowing is half the battle…… :-)

That had to be so surreal watching your car go like that. I’ve have started to get out of my car and forgot to put the car in neutral w/brake on and started to roll. Luckily I was on fairly flat ground.
Even if Glenn had put on the emergency break it may not have helped. He does need lessons on parking on a hill or sloped area.

Oct. 9, 2012 at 6:44pmEmergency/Parking brake would not have helped , car was parked and this truck comes automatic only so the transmissions “parking pawl” would have locked the (guessing but it’s a Ford) right side rear wheel and possibly both rears if the car had traction-lock (positrac is a GM trademark),, obviously this wasn’t a city environment so turning the wheels one way or another toward the curb wasn’t a possibility ,, the solution is to find flat ground to park on..
With 80%+ of the body panels damaged (new axle is a cheap bolt in from a junkyard) and it being a low mileage lease car (rental companies lease most of their cars) this one will be parted out…

Oct. 11, 2012 at 12:25pmWhen a vehicle is in “park, most do NOT have a locking differential, so only one[1] wheel is locked and three roll downthe hill becdaue the “locked-one” started to slide. Most SUV’S have rear-wheel drive(or 4-wheel) but the parking-brake only workes on the rear-wheels…so when one starts to slide all the wheels in front just turn-round all the way down the hill. The FORD-Escape and the KIA-Sportage are front wheel drive-only(instead of rear-only). Therefore, when “park” is used, the FRONT-WHEELS are locked…when the “park-brake” is on…ALL FOUR WHEELS ARE LOCKED!!
Only with a 2-wheel/front-wheel-drive with the park-brake on are all 4-wheels locked.
A rear-wheel-drive/4-wheel vehicle will slide because the rear-drive is the same as theparkingbrake!!
Only if you are in 4-wheel-drive AND have the park-brake “on” and in park are all4wheels locked. I see you have not done any homework.

As for the insurance – to pick a not or two – the state requires drivers to carry liability insurance to cover the damages their car may cause others. Collusion/theft coverage is at the discretion if the owner, and if you are still making payments on the car, that would be the bank that requires the collision coverage.

Shale isn’t gravel and nobody who lives in the area would ever park on a shale slope near the lake unless it was dark when they parked or careless. Oct. 9, 2012 at 11:42amThat’s on Seneca Lake. I recognize the spot. The wedding was near Lodi. Lucky it didn’t go into the lake. that would’ve been a real mess.

Oct. 9, 2012 at 11:41amat least noone was in the car. That happened to me once when I parked my car, just after learning to drive a stick. I woke up to go to work and my car was down the hill in my neighbors yard :/
It happens?

Oct. 9, 2012 at 11:40amThank God no one was hurt. What a strange sight it had to have been just watching the SUV just rolling down a hill. At least this is something that can be replaced. Glenn was right/smart telling Tania to let it go.
