Have You Seen Obama’s New Bombastic Big Bird Ad? No, Really (UPDATED)
Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney during last week’s debate with President Barack Obama said that he would scale back government subsidies to public entities such as Amtrak and PBS.
“I’m sorry, Jim, I’m going to stop the subsidy to PBS … I like PBS, I love Big Bird, I actually like you, too,” Romney said to debate moderator and former anchor of the PBS “NewsHour” Jim Lehrer, “but I’m not going to keep on spending money on things to borrow money from China to pay for.”
Oddly enough, somewhere between the beginning and the end of that sentence, someone on the Obama re-election staff decided that they should make Big Bird a permanent fixture on the campaign trail.
“For all you moms and kids out there, don’t worry, somebody is finally getting tough on Big Bird. Elmo, you better make a run for it,” President Obama told a crowd last Friday. “Gov. Romney is going to let Wall Street run wild again, but he’s going to bring the hammer down on ‘Sesame Street.’”
No, really. This is actually a campaign talking point.
Even Former White House Press Sec. Robert Gibbs has gotten in on the action: “The only thing [Romney] outlined that he would cut in the budget is Big Bird. He’s taking the battle straight to Sesame Street and let Wall Street run hog wild.”
Really, someone on Team Obama thinks this is a good line of attack. So good, in fact, that the official campaign of the President of the United States of America on Tuesday released an ad accusing the former Massachusetts governor of having it in for the eight-foot-tall puppet:
Final Thought — Stop us if you’ve heard this one before: “If you don’t have a record to run on, then you paint your opponent as someone people should run away from. You make a big election about small things.”
UPDATE — Shortly after the Obama campaign released the Big Bird ad Tuesday morning, Sesame Workshop issued the following statement:
Sesame Workshop is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization and we do not endorse candidates or participate in political campaigns. We have approved no campaign ads, and as is our general practice, have requested that the ad be taken down.
For those of you keeping score at home, that’s the second time this week the Obama campaign has been publicly scolded for using unapproved material in a campaign ad.
UPDATE II– Deputy White House Communications Director Jen Psaki on Tuesday told the press gaggle on Air Force One the Obama campaign would “review” Sesame Workshop’s request [emphasis added]:
Reporter: I feel a little odd saying this, but I have two questions about Big Bird. (Laughter.) The first is that as you know, Sesame Street has asked for the ad to be pulled on the grounds that it’s not a political organization and doesn’t want to be drawn into this kind of debate. Will the campaign honor it and pull down that ad?
Ms. Psaki: We have received that request. We’re reviewing it. I will say it doesn’t change the fact that there’s only one candidate in this race who is going to continue to fight for Big Bird and Elmo, and he is riding on this plane.

The P is getting desperate – this is a talking point?
What Mr. Romney said should be said everyday in Big-G [ an oxymoron for them ] if its not value added… its gotta go. A lot has to change to get this debt monster under control…. but our P thinks we can spend, tax, service our debt, and save money…. that isn’t going to work…. not even in my little world of small business. More tax and reg’s just reduces the likelihood of a biz to hire more, hard choices need to be made, especially if those taxes and reg’s change quaterly, or as of late, monthly [ for some industries ]. Pretty simple equation(s).

Posted on October 9, 2012 at 10:41amI like that Romney has set a criteria in order to decide which programs get cut-off. We have to face the fact that we are spending way more than we can afford. So, go Mitt! It’s going to be painful, but we got to get it done already. The sooner, the better. It’s time for some serious recovery now. Just look at Coolidge and what he did.

Obama camp has nothing…..they have to call Romney a liar without specifics when they are the liars without specifics. How does trickle down government work? Where does the money come from to run it? How does middle out work?….we print money to make middle class pay in higher prices of gas, groceries and goods? Hope? Hope for what? Change? Change into what? Forward? Forward to what? How does his plan work….what are his specifics? You can’t take it all from the top percent and fund all the voters he is buying with borrowed money. It is impossible. So how does this top down government, middle out government work? Who funds it ….what government….. China?
They take the worst of who they are and accuse their opposition of it. Romney has been consistent and has offered more of a vision and specifics than we can get from Obama.

Posted on October 9, 2012 at 11:29amUs registered Democrats should have got smart when Obama was going on about Bush driveing the Bus off into the ditch – catchy but dumb. After he took office all he talked about was he had to pull it out and he has let the unions try at the cost of a trillion bucks (TARP) for 3.5 years and it is still stuck in the ditch. A person that had business savey would have used a small non-union construction company and for less tha a half million bucks got it out. One of his problems is all those Clinton minions that he pulled out of retirement didn’t help a bit. Twenty years of sniffing Coke and smokeing joints clouded their brains.

Posted on October 9, 2012 at 12:13pmReally? I’ve been saying for years we’re supporting things that can work better in the private sector.
PBS had some value about 40 years ago, but is no longer viable to anyone.
Big Bird can make his own way. He’s old enough to be out on his own.
Amtrak is a dismal failure for many reasons. Let Amtrak be run by a capitalist company and it could actually be run more efficiently than it’s ever been. The Government ruins everything it lays it’s hands on, especially the people who go to office to represent us….they have no idea it’s about US not them.. We rode Amtrak overnight a number of times 6-8 years ago and each trip made an impression on us to never, never do this again. I’d love to take the train on a regular basis, but not the way it’s run by the govmt.
Our Government is taking on too many things they don’t know how to run efficiently. Most of this stuff isn’t even in our Government’s contract to THE PEOPLE.
Stop all those stupid, expensive things our congress shoves into every bill, running the costs up so high and often have no bearing on the welfare or help for our citizens. Congress does most of this crapola just to get re-elected, if they pad the Bills with phony causes that usually don’t help us in the long run. Who cares about the sex life of an African Ant?…….this is typical too. If we have to know about an ant’s sex life, let’s at least study the American Ants to bring home the bacon.

Henson created them, but gave the trademarks and copyrights to CTW/Sesame Place. Spinney couldn’t spin off Big Bird if he wanted to, he doesn’t own the rights.
TLC is the private sector version of PBS, TLC gives us junk like the Long Island Medium and Honey Boo Boo, PBS gives us Great Performances, Sesame Street, Mister Rogers, etc. The private sector can not provide the quality that PBS provides.

Posted on October 10, 2012 at 2:47pmThe way I see this BIG BIRD ad and controversy – it is simply another Obama DIVERSION from reality of the RED MEAT in Romney’s comment. What was the content of Mitt’s speech just BEFORE he mentioned PBS and BIG BIRD?” Let me refresh your memory:
MR. ROMNEY: “What things would I cut from spending? Well, first of all, I will eliminate all programs by this test — if they don’t pass it: Is the program so critical it’s worth borrowing money from China to pay for it? And if not, I’ll get rid of it. “Obamacare” is on my list. I apologize, Mr. President. I use that term with all respect.
PRESIDENT OBAMA: I like it.
MR. ROMNEY: Good. OK, good. (Laughter.) So I’ll get rid of that. I’m sorry, Jim. I’m going to stop the subsidy to PBS. I’m going to stop other things. I like PBS. I love Big Bird. I actually like you too. But I’m not going to — I’m not going to keep on spending money on things to borrow money from China to pay for it. That’s number one.”
THE RED MEAT:
“OBAMACARE”! Obama and team are controlling the conversation! They don’t want the PUBLIC to REMEMBER this point, “OBAMACARE IS ON MY LIST!” Last time I heard, a HUGE percentage of Americans want OBAMACARE repealed. Something like 60%???
Simple as that – OBAMA wants to DROWN OUT the KEY POINT of Mitt’s sentence – REPEAL OF OBAMACARE!!! OBAMACARE is what we CARE about…..not BIG BIRD.
Don’t let Obama DIRECT the conversation, because that is EXACTLY what he is at

The US military wastes more money in an hour than the entire monies given to PBS. The largest impact of the cutting PBS’ budget, won’t be felt in New York or California, but in West Virgina, the Dakotas, and other small markets and rural areas. Places where the 47% live.

In the day when only CBS, NBC and ABC existed PBS was a way to bring “refinement” aka “the arts” to people who could not attend an opera, or a play, or visit the symphony. Also, free TV still exists. People do not need to buy cable or satellite to watch TV. They have up to 78 channels. In my day we had the three above. In my day we didn’t have the technology we have today.
Most “poor” people and seniors I know have satellite, cable, DSL or other TV/Internet connections with 100′s of TV stations to watch. PBS does not need government funding. It makes plenty with private funding.
Please educate yourself and quite spouting off Liberal indoctrination agenda that doesn’t exist nor is true today.

This election has been turned into a circus show freak act mainly due to the immaturity of the liberals. Big Bird is a fictional character. I loved him when I was a kid, but I have grown up. This is what liberals, including the “big zero himself” needs to do – grow up.
Where I work, I just spoke with a client who is an immigrant from Chile. He made mention about Obama fixing the country in the next 4 years. I pointed out that he has messed this country up in the last 4 years and asked him what makes him think that in the next 4 Obama will fix it. He had no answer (the typical liberal response). I then pointed out that he came to the U.S. to escape socialism, so why does he want to go back to socialism. He actually had no idea that Obama is a socialist – he was that far in the dark. Hopefully, I convinced him to take a good look at Romney.

“Previously, Governor Romney has said that his tax plan would cut all individual income tax rates by 20%, eliminate the AMT, eliminate the estate tax, and eliminate taxes on investment income for low- and middle-income taxpayers. He would also extend all of the Bush-era tax cuts that are scheduled to expire at the end of 2012.
Those tax cuts would reduce federal revenues by $480 billion in 2015 over and above the cost of extending the Bush tax cuts. Allow for some growth in income, and the total comes to over $5 trillion over ten years.” http://www.forbes.com/sites/leonardburman/2012/10/04/about-mitt-romneys-5-trillion-tax-cut/

Posted on October 9, 2012 at 9:28pm@ Encinom, Maybe you would like it to go back the 70% tax rate it was under Carter, There are way too many coincidences that our current administration has in common with the administration that took office in 1977. If you give tax cuts you put more money in the consumers pockets….THEREFORE the economy will thrive…..Don’t vote Democrat just because you are one…….Vote American to help restore our country

Posted on October 9, 2012 at 10:18amBecause he would change. Look what happened to TLC when it got into private hands. Now it has honey boo boo. Seriously, with all that is wrong in the world and he picks on PBS. Google Mister Rogers when he spoke to congress and watch that. I like a lot of the policies of Republicans but sometimes they shoot themselves in the foot. Ouch!

Posted on October 9, 2012 at 11:30amThesource is wrong. PBS should not be funded by the government. Private money can do it. It will survive on its own if it is good.
They need to cut money from alot of programs people like.
This is one example. People like their stuff but the real question is who should be paying for it.
The obama team b*tches about specifics when they have no vision, no plans, no budget. They buy their votes with taxpayer money. Where are their specifics? How is trickle down government funded? How does middle out work~ do you print money so that the middle class has to pay more for everything they do…gas, groceries, goods? Hope? Hope for what? Change? Change into what?
Forward? Forward to what? Where is the Obama plan? All we have heard is tax the rich~well the rich can’t fund what Obama is spending! So what is the plan, the vision, the specifics and the budget Obama has?

Captain Kangaroo did pretty well without taxpayer funding.

Don’t force me to pay for crap I don’t care about. I’m sick of bed wetting liberals thinking they have the right to decide what I “need’ to spend my money on!

Posted on October 9, 2012 at 10:44amIt’s not the MSM that is going to get violent. It’s the city dweller’s. They will blame the rich and white people. When obama loses thing’s are going to get very ugly very quick. The MSM will stroke the fires. People better wise up race has become the main issue again in this country and alot of us have had enough. Just how do you think they are going to react to obama only getting 1 term? This is going to have a negative affect on race relations in this country for decades…..

Posted on October 9, 2012 at 10:00amOnly a liberal would consider this an important story in today’s world. Big bird is a private figure making money for a private company and liberals think it needs tax dollars? No wonder we have Solendra and the like. And liberals still have the gall to bitch about a tax break for oil exploration. Amazing ignorance indeed.

Posted on October 9, 2012 at 9:58amPBS (and NPR for that matter) should not be receiving taxpayer money. PBS used to have no commercials, but now they have commercials, “sponsors”, beg-a-thons, and merchandising dollars. They have no need for taxpayer funding.

I refer to their fund raisers as extortion, i.e., “If you don’t send us money, we’re going to continue the non-stop Yani marathon until you pay up.”
If I have to flip past one more Celtic Women extravaganza I think I’ll just block the channel altogether.
