Does Obama’s Mystery Ring Really Have ‘There Is No God Except Allah’ Inscribed in Arabic?

Watch our extended discussion of this story from Thursday’s BlazeCast:

Does Obamas Wedding Ring Really Have the Islamic Shahada Inscribed on it?

A World Net Daily (WND) report alleging that a ring President Barack Obama wears on his left hand includes the Islamic and Arabic phrase, “There is no God but Allah,” has been making its way across social media and the blogosphere.

The article cites an Obama critic and an Islamic scholar as sources and claims that the president has been wearing the ring, which apparently now doubles as his wedding band, for the past 30 years. We’ll let WND describe the scenario to you in the outlet’s own words:

As a student at Harvard Law School, then-bachelor Barack Obama’s practice of wearing a gold band on his wedding-ring finger puzzled his colleagues.

Now, newly published photographs of Obama from the 1980s show that the ring Obama wore on his wedding-ring finger as an unmarried student is the same ring Michelle Robinson put on his finger at the couple’s wedding ceremony in 1992.

Moreover, according to Arabic-language and Islamic experts, the ring Obama has been wearing for more than 30 years is adorned with the first part of the Islamic declaration of faith, the Shahada: β€œThere is no god except Allah.”

Some critics will likely seize upon this article to claim that Obama is a Muslim and that this is the proof that’s needed to out his purportedly secretly-held faith. After all, the alleged phrase that some claim is in the ring’s design is part of theΒ shahada, the First Pillar of Islam and the declaration of belief that adherents must accept in order to be counted as Muslims.

It’s important to note, though, that “Allah” — at least in this instance — is more closely translated to mean “God.” Thus, a more accurate interpretation is, “There is no god but God.” The second part of the shahada is “Muhammad is the prophet of God.” This latter portion is not said to be present on Obama’s ring (theΒ shahadaΒ in its entirety reads, “There is no god but God and Muhammad is the prophet of God”).

Critics should probably take pause, though — particularly those making the jump to claim that the ring is somehow slam-dunk proof of Obama’s supposed devotion to the Islamic faith. This first part of the shahada, though specific to Islam, is a tenet that any monotheistic adherent can relate to. Furthermore, some critics claim that using the word “Allah” as WND (and as many others generally do) tends to make it unfairly seem as though the saying is exclusive to Islam.

If the ring were said to have the second portion of the shahada, then eyebrows would likely raise a bit more. After all, Muhammad is confined to Islam and such a statement being present onΒ jewelryΒ would certainly be indicativeΒ of Islamic inclination.

Knowing that these elements were at play, TheBlaze decided to speak with experts at some of America’s leading universities. One academic, a professor at Duke University, provided a candid assessment, but asked to remain off-the-record. Based on the images and analysis present in the WND report, he said that the script present on Obama’s ring appears to be Arabic and that it does, indeed, include the first portion of the shahada.

“I think this is accurate,” he said of the description surrounding the ring.

That in mind, the professor said that he believes the president’s claims that he is a Christian and that the purpose for the ring might be more rooted in other sentiments that lay outside of the Islamic religious tradition. In fact, some individuals wear rings similar to Obama’s for personal protection, he said.

“Usually people in the Middle East — they wear such rings just for protection against any evil [spirits], car crashes — to keep them safe from evil,” he explained.

While the academic contends that Obama may be wearing a ring that publicly pronounces a belief in one God, gold, in some areas of the Middle East, is not a metal that many Muslim men are permitted to wear. Thus, by some standards and in certain localities Obama’s ring would disqualify him from entering a mosque or even participating in worship — theoretically, speaking.

While the Duke scholar seemed certain of the Arabic script present on the ring, Harvard University’s Dr. Ali Asani, a professor of Indo-Muslim and Islamic Religion and Cultures, told TheBlaze that the images of Obama’s ring were not clear enough to make a determination.

“I’d actually have to see it much closer to see exactly what it says,” Asani said.

While he disagreed with the Duke professor that the script is definitively Arabic and that it is, without question, representative of the first portion of the shahada, Asani did agree on one major point: Even if it is the first section of shahada, such a determination would, in itself, mean very little.

“It’s very clear that its not the whole shahada — of course in the shahada there the two different phrases. One isΒ inclusive,” he explained. “It’s a statement any monotheist could accept — that there’s only one god. It’s only the second part that’s exclusivist.”

With monotheism being the central underpinning of Judaism, Christianity and Islam, the universalist nature of the shahada’sΒ affirmationΒ of a solitary God can be embraced by any adherent of theΒ aforementionedΒ faiths, Asani corroborated.

As far as the Duke professor’s claims about gold, Asani agreed, but he offered a caveat — that the policy on wearing goldΒ jewelryΒ differs based on Islamic tradition and interpretation.

“ItΒ dependsΒ on whose interpretation of Islam,” the professor said. “Some ultra-conservatives have this [restriction on gold but] lots of Muslim men wear gold rings.”

Unlike the Duke expert, Asani said that he had not seen any other rings reminiscent of Obama’s (pending the shadada truly is inscribed in the ring).Β ”Usually theΒ calligraphyΒ is not part of the design itself,” he explained.

In discussing potential motivations for wearing the ring, if, indeed, its description is accurate, Asani entertained the notion that a relative might have given it to Obama — a theory that TheBlaze posited during the interview. Asani, who was born in Kenya, described having a similar situation in which his father gave him a gold ring that belonged to his grandfather — a piece of jewelry that he still wears today.

As WND notes, a 2009 New York Times article claims that Obama’s ring did, indeed, come from Indonesia. The description reads, “Michelle’s was traditional, but Barack’s was an intricate gold design from Indonesia, where he had lived as a boy.” While the article doesn’t note that Obama purportedly wore the ring years before his wedding, it does seem to corroborate the notion that it came from the nation that Obama once called home.

After speaking with the Duke and Harvard experts,Β TheBlazeΒ reached out toΒ RajΒ Bhala,Β Associate Dean for International and Comparative Law atΒ The University of KansasΒ School of Law to capture his take on the reports surrounding Obama’s ring. While he had not read the WND report, he mirrored the sentiment presented by the other scholars we spoke with. Even if the ring is, indeed, theΒ shahada, he said, “So what?”

“Let’s suppose he is wearing a ring that says ‘there is no god but God,’ ‘there are noΒ deitiesΒ but God,’ ‘nothing is worthy of being worshipped in the universe accept God.’ What that would mean is the president is a monotheist,”Β BhalaΒ said. “He believes in a single God. He’s in theΒ abrahamic tradition of Jews, Christians and Muslims.”

Rather than serving as a sign of devotion to Islam, Bhala noted that Obama may actually be making a ChristianΒ propositionΒ and exhibiting his personal faith in Christ by wearing the ring (click here to see images, like the one, below, from The New Yorker).

Does Obamas Wedding Ring Really Have the Islamic Shahada Inscribed on it?

These interview subjects provide a stark contrast to Islamic scholar Mark A. Gabriel, whomΒ WND interviewedΒ for the outlet’s article on the subject (Gabriel, too, said that many Muslim men do often wear gold, despite religious regulations in some areas against the practice).

“There can be no doubt that someone wearing the inscription β€˜There is no god except Allah’ has a very close connection to Islamic beliefs, the Islamic religion and Islamic society to which this statement is so strongly attached,” he told the outlet.Β β€œChristians never use the statement. By wearing the shahada on jewelry, a person communicates that Allah is in control of all circumstances. Allah controls you; Allah is the one and only one.”

Certainly, Obama’s ring is fascinating and, considering its history, it must hold special meaning to the president. Consider the brief historical account that WND provides in itsΒ analysisΒ (this is being shared mainly to showcase the allegation that Obama has been wearing the ring on his wedding finger for decades):

AsΒ WND reported in July, previously published photos have shown Obama wearing a gold band on his wedding-ring finger continuously from 1981 at Occidental, through graduation at Columbia in 1983, in a visit to Africa in 1988 and during his time at Harvard from 1988 to 1991. But none, until now, have displayed the ring with enough detail to identify it as the one he currently is wearing.

WND reportedΒ a satirical edition of the Harvard Law Review published by students in 1990 contains a mock Dewers Scotch profile advertisement poking fun at Obama. Among a list of Obama’s β€œLatest Accomplishments” is: β€œDeflecting Persistent Questioning About Ring On Left Hand.”

So, it seems the situation is a complicated one. Regardless of where one stands, learning the true history behind the ring and the president’s reasoning for continuing to wear it would be a fascinating feat.

The second portion is probably inscribed on the inside of the ring.

“There is no god but Allah”, on the outside.

Didn’t Obama credit Rev. Wright for bringing him to a faith in Jesus! If that is true, then when he was wearing it in college it couldn’t have been because of his faith in Christianity. We know for sure it wasn’t his faith in Judaism, so what does that leave? Islam?

That was exactly my thought when I read it on WND last night.

This is just another in a series of things that lead one to conclude that he is indeed a muslim. While each action or statement is not proof in itself, the aggregate is damning.

      2) No Christian would wear a ring proclaiming a false god and religion that denies Christ is the Son of God.

How do the Coptic Christians in the Middle East refer to God. What name do they use? Is it also Allah?
That is a key point, because if the Coptic Christians do not refer to God that way then who does.

Looks like Glens favorite Muslim leader, Louis Farrakann debunked the argument that devout muslim men don’t wear gold rings on their fingers. Just google Farakann and click images. Check out a few pics of him wearing a gold ring. In one picture, Farakann is actually kneeling and praying to his allah and he is wearing a Huge gold ring on his left ring finger. Looks like devout Muslims can wear gold rings if they choose to do so.

I am sorry why are we lying to people. I am from that region and know Islam and Muslims from my heart. I said the very first time listing to his speach on Nov 2nd 2008 that he was what he was and compared his persidency to South Afirca. Now the ring says Alah u Akbar. This if only transulated by a person that does not believe in Islam is there is only one God. But to a muslim this means Muslim God is the only one. They say Alah u Akbar when hey intend to do something of importance. Again as I said this four years ago, if he was muslim and really converted to Christian, he would have target on his head. He would have been target in Muslim world. Please do not lie to the people and tell the truth. He is Muslim. My mother was Muslim and father Jew. My mother side of family was a learning experience. Please do not lie. Alah u Akbar is there is no God but Muslim God.

While I think Glenn and his sidekick are being about as flippant on this issue as they are on Obama’s true birthplace, it adds little to what I already know about him. It’s not a make or break issue for me, just more ammunition against a man who is decidedly anti-colonialist, anti-American, anti-Isreal, Marxist, racist, anti-capitalist, pro radical Islam…. the list goes on. A decoder ring isn’t going to be the clincher. I don’t need any more proof.

@marybethelizabeth: If someone believes in Jesus doesn’t that make him Christian regardless of their stance on the trinity? In fact, I remember the Trinity not even being mentioned in Christianity until the Nicean Council in 325 AD. So while Christ walked the earth and not until 300 years after His death, there was no trinity. It’s the belief in Christ that makes you a Christian not the belief in a trinity.

When you wear a ring that, it means you have married Alah. This is commen in radical Islam. Read about Khanegh, which is Ventura, CA. This group are very Radical and they get their white weak persons that they can use. They ask them to Marry Islam and they have to work to advance Alah.

There are a number of scholars who believe that Allah, was originally the name of the moon god of Northern Arabia. It is important to remember that the word “Allah” simply means “the god” and corresponds to “ho theos” in the Greek New Testament as “the God” which refers to the Father in John 1:1 and the Son in John 20:28 and Heb 1:8. What is interesting is that Hubal was the top pagan moon god of the Kabah. So Allah is the generic and Hubal, may have been the actual name, in the same way that “the God” is generic and “Jehovah” is the name. The Arabs may have referred to “Hubal” as “Allah”, just like Jews would refer to “Jehovah” as “The God”.

Also, whoever wrote “It’s important to note, though, that β€œAllah” β€” at least in this instance β€” is more closely translated to mean β€œGod,” doesn’t have a clue as to what they’re talking about. Our Christian God has absolutely nothing to do with the Muslim Allah. The two are not one in the same.

Talk about posting an article which is completely misleading to people who may have never had discussions with Muslims. After 9/11, I joined a Moroccan board and they were very strong in their beliefs that the Christian God is not Allah. I suggest that Billy Hallowell do better research next time.

A very important point is that the word Allah is not simply a traslation for God. It may be understood that way today, however, Allah is the name of the moon god that was worshipped in ancient (I believe mesopotamia) where many gods (idols) were worshipped. Muhammed essentially took the name of a popular idol, the moon god Allah, which was accepted by many in that culture. It’s not surprising that the crescent moon is a symbol used in the arab world, since Allah is the name of the moon god. Many people are in error when they say the name of Allah and just assume they are saying god. They’re actually saying the name of the moon god that was plagarized by Mohammed for use in Islam.

“It’s important to note, though, that β€œAllah” β€” at least in this instance β€” is more closely translated to mean β€œGod.” Thus, a more accurate interpretation is, β€œThere is no god but God.β€œ ”

      OH C’MON!

      1) ‘allah’ is not the GOD referred to in the Holy Bible. allah has had many faces predating islam! According to the Encyclopedia of Religion, “allah” corresponded to the Babylonian god baal. “allah” was the god of the local Quarish tribe, which was mohammed’s tribe before he invented Islam to lead his people out of their polytheism. allah was then known as the “moon god”. β€œHistorians like Vaqqidi have said “allah” was actually the chief of the 360 gods being worshiped in Arabia at the time mohammed rose to prominence.
      2) if the ring isn’t referring to ‘allah’, but “God”, why is it written in arabic rather than HEBREW?
      3) “No god but God” is a book written by an Iranian-American muslim scholar by the name of Reza Aslan. The book describes the history of islam and argues for a liberal interpretation of the religion. The book blames Western imperialism and self-serving misinterpretations of Islamic law by past scholars for the current controversies within islam. – wiki

So, Obama’s ring is referring specifically to the false deity “allah” and not the Creator God of our Founders, so the most APPROPRIATE interpretation is “There is no god but allah…”. The rest of the declaration reads: “…and Muhammad is the Messenger of allah.

      Posted on October 12, 2012 at 12:52am

I lived in the Middle East for two years. While there, I made small investment purchases of jewelry- gold and silver. One piece I purchased was a pendant of the Quran, about 3/4″ X 1″. I bought it because it was unique and silver (at the time) over there was cheap. The pendant is hollow and has a secret opening at the bottom. No writing on it at all, but clearly, given its origin, it’s the Quran. First thing I did after moving back to the states was have it engraved with these letters HOLY BIBLE!

This “ring” that adorns the president’s finger IS a testament to WHO he is. There is no way a Christian would wear a piece of jewelry that said “There is no God, but Allah.” As Christians, rightfully know, there exists only one God, but in the minds of men, exists many gods. Allah IS such a god. He is not the God of Israel, of Isaac, and Jacob. The God of Israel is I AM.

Perhaps, just the ring alone should not elude us all to believe that our commander in chief is a Muslim. But, collectively, with all that we know about him, with all we have seen and heard from him, from his own actions, can we not rightfully draw such a conclusion? Are we supposed to be stupid and just ignore every single piece of evidence that presents itself that points to WHO this man is?

      1) 57 states. There is not 57 states in America but there are 57 states of the middle east
      2) he ended the day of prayer for Christians in the white house but has a day of prayer for itslime where he locks himself away with itslime religious leaders and no one is allowed to know what goes on in that room.
      3) He allows the mudslime brotherhood to come and go as they please in the white house and everywhere else.
      4) In College he changed his name from his white Christian slave name to a African mudslime name, which is common for blacks who convert to get rid of their white slave name and take on a mudslime african name.
      5) He constantly protects the mudslimes over America.
      6) He had no problem removing any leader in ME that was not a devout mudslime but will not do anything to Iran and its devout mudslime cleric leaders.
      7) He hates Israel and the only time he says anything nice about Jews is when it is election time.
      8) He bowed to the leaders of Saudi
      9) He can resite the Mudslime call to prayer and thinks it is the most amazing thing.
      10) He tells the UN that no one should talk bad about itslime or mohuamnuts the molester AKA chester.
The last thing is that in the qoran book of lies it says that it is okay for mudslimes to deny their faith to reach their goal which is the destruction of the USA and the total world domination of itslime.

Hmmm….) I wear only one ring constantly….my wedding ring. It is symbolic of my deepest commitment. Obama was already deeply committed to someone or something else before he married, and that commitment obviously did not change when he married Michelle. I have this idealistic view of Glenn Beck followers as people who just want to know the truth, no matter what. A couple of folks comments on this site try to equate Mormonism and Islam. Please go to lds.org and search “Constitution” and see what leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints have said about this nation. You may not adhere to our beliefs about the reality of Jesus Christ as the living Son of a living Heavenly Father. Fine… that is your choice. But NO informed person could ever honestly say that a Mormon President would be a threat to our nation by mere virtue of his religion. I dare say there is no other religion that more fully honors the United States of America, it’s Constitution, it’s founding, it’s promise, and it’s people. Some Church leaders have even referred to our Constitution as a “covenant with God”. Easy research. lds.org – try it

Maybe I don’t understand Arabic sentence structuring, but why doesn’t the statement say ‘there is no Allah but Allah” instead of ‘there is no God but Allah’. The phrase appears to me to be making a distinction that there is no other God, such as christian, hindu, budhist, etc., than the God named Allah in the Koran. This is troubling to me. Either he has a preference towards the Islamic faith or he is polytheistic, trying to combine many “Gods” into one faith.

A simple snapshot doesn’t tell you the story, it only provides a clue. It could mean anything. And this “stuff” about one little ring is just a snapshot.

But adding several snapshots over time and you begin to get the story, the essence of the truth, it’s feel if you will. A lot like what the Rabbi had to say when Beck was discussing the new forms of Ba’al worship and influence in our society.

It’s also important to remember that it is an Islamic belief, as stated in the Koran, that it is okay for Muslims to lie to those that are not Muslims or infidels. I pray that in history books fifty years from now Obama isn’t mentioned much. Does it really take Obama coming out in a Dishdasha screaming Allahu Akbar to convince you where he stands. Follow the money. We’ve come to that where money elects the President. In the history books we all will be known as the greatest failures or the greatest generation that restored America.

      @ ENCINOM:
While I am a devout follower of Glenn Beck and the TRUTH, this may not be true, so as much as I really hate to admit it, you are probably correct:

If you go to URBANLEGENDS.COM, it explains that THIS RING IS NOT WHAT THEBLAZE TRIES TO MAKE IT OUT TO BE. Sorry, but I am not buyin it, Glenn.

BUT, I DO BELIEVE OBAMA HATES THIS COUNTRY, AND JUST BECAUSE OF THAT, HE WILL LOSE THE ELECTION – BIG TIME.

Obama has showed the American people how much we mean to him – nothing and this is why he is doing everything he can to destroy her. If you do not see that. then you are either delusional and under Obama’s SPELL OF LIES AND INCANTATIONS or YOU ARE JUST AS EVIL AS HE IS AND HATE THIS COUNTRY, AS WELL.

Encinom: I read all your comments and I have come to the final conclusion that YOU ALSO HATE AMERICA and WHAT SHE STANDS FOR, so I ask you, WHY ARE YOU EVEN HERE? Your kind is in the MINORITY and Obama WILL lose this election, SO I suggest you try to spread your venom elsewhere because the people on this board ARE SMARTER BECAUSE THEY DO THEIR HOMEWORK VERY WELL AND NOT JUST FROM THEBLAZE.COM. They actually go to every source out there and do the research. You, on the other hand, get your lies from MediaMatters.com because you cannot face the truth about what is real and what is not.

HATE is Obama’s greatest motive for what he does and that’s enough for the majority of good patriotic Americans, who actually LOVE THE TRUTH….you clearly, do not.

Really ? You want to go with this “It’s important to note, though, that β€œAllah” β€” at least in this instance β€” is more closely translated to mean β€œGod.” Thus, a more accurate interpretation is, β€œThere is no god but God.β€œ ?

There is no God but Jehovah, Yaweh – the Great I Am, allah is NOT the same entity as Jehovah, Yaweh, the Great I Am – so that “closely translated” cannot be correct.

Yes, Allah is theoretically the same entity as Yahweh. Muslims, Christians, and Jews all worship the same God of Abraham. The differences begin on your opinions of Jesus. If you think Jesus was a false prophet, you might be Jewish. If you think Jesus was a true prophet of God, but not literally God, you might be Muslim. If you think Jesus was not just a prophet but literally God Himself, you’re likely Christian.

Do some research on the Islamic prophet Mohammad.

“Whoever strikes you on the cheek, turn the other one also.”

Is that similar to Mohammad’s teachings?

In the battle of Badr, Mohammad’s forces were routed, and his face was injured. Did he turn the other side of his face also?

Nay, he recongregated his forces and struck back, utterly slaughtering the opponents who would dare strike the cheek of their prophet.

That sounds like the exact opposite of Jesus, frankly. Sorry if my facts offend you.

Absolutely. And Muslims DO NOT worship the same God. Read just a small portion of the Koran and you will discover tha Islam recognizes Ishmael and his decendants, not Issac and Jacob. That negates the entire Christian faith. If you don’t believe that Jesus is the son of God then you don’T believe in the same God as Christians. Jews believe in the same God as Christians. They will be converted to Christianity by the millions when the time comes. ( I figured some on here would jump on my comment about Jews (encion, et al) None of this is my opinion, just read and study the bible.

This story is misleading. ‘There is no god but allah’ is a slap in the face to Christianity. Muslims brand Christians and Jews as polytheists because of the trinity ( Father Son, and Holy Spirit )
The Eloheem ( sorry not sure how to spell that in english, but it’s in Genesis 1:1.)
At any rate, this is NOT a point that Christians and muslims agree on.

Hal Lindsey .com does a great job of explaining all of this. ( WND world net daily publishes his books)
