Liberal Christian Group Begs AP to Stop Using ‘Illegal Immigrant’: A ‘Dehumanizing Term’ That ‘Robs People of Their Dignity’

Sojourners, Pastor Jim Wallis’ progressive organization and media outlet, is circulating a petition to encourage supporters to convince The Associated Press, a news-wire service, to stop using the supposedly-dehumanizing term “illegal.”

This morning, an e-mail was distributed to supporters, blaming the media, in part, for the nation’s failure to “change the national debate on immigration.” At the center of Sojourners’ claims is that the media unfairly label undocumented immigrants as “illegal.”

From a denotative standpoint, though, this is the legal term for individuals who are not natural-born citizens and who have failed to go through the proper channels to enter and remain in the U.S. legally. Even Dictionary.com defines “illegal alien” as “a foreigner who has entered or resides in a country unlawfully or without the country’s authorization.”

But Sojourners maintains that the word “illegal” is a “dehumanizing term” that “robs people of their dignity.”

In an e-mail to supporters, Wallis’ group also maintains that when outlets like the AP use the term, it “prejudices readers against the needs and concerns of our immigrant brothers and sisters.” Because reporters and journalists generally rely upon the “Associated Press Stylebook” to guide them when it comes to crafting stories, Sojourners is particularly frustrated with the fact that the book tells reporters “illegal immigrant” is still acceptable.

On a web page setup to allow supporters to e-mail David Minthorn, the AP’s deputy standards editor and co-editor of the stylebook, with their concerns, the outlet presents the following letter for supporters to sign:

Dear Mr. Minthorn,

As people of faith we believe that each person is created in God’s image, and the dignity of all people must be protected. Language is a powerful tool that is never neutral. Descriptions shape perceptions. Words are used to persuade.

The use of the term “illegal immigrant” to describe immigrants living in the U.S. without documentation is degrading and inappropriate. The label assigns a status to the whole individual, rather than speaking to a particular aspect of their situation.

Given the authority and influence of the AP Stylebook in setting standards for media outlets across the country and around the world, I am writing to urge the AP to stop using the term “illegal immigrant” to describe undocumented immigrants and revise the guidance offered by the AP Stylebook when it comes to this term.

In making its appeal to encourage a softer tone when it comes to undocumented individuals, Sojourners invoked scripture in its letter urging people to participate in the the e-mail blitz. The outlet highlighted Proverbs 15:1, which reads, “A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”

The e-mail concludes by calling for the “controversial” word to be removed from the AP’s media manifesto so that “a more compassionate and accurate conversation about immigration” can take form. In September, journalist Jose Antonio Vargas, himself an illegal immigrant, delivered a similar challenge to the AP.

So using the term “illegal” is dehumanizing and we shouldn’t use it because it hurts their feelings? Instead of us stop using the term how about them stop coming her ILLEGALLY.   This is an example of “information dominance” – to suppress our awareness to a potential threat – shaping and dominating the perception. Another example: the “spontaneous” response to the You Tube Video or as Obama stated, the “natural response” (much more watered-down word version).
  Calling it “violent extremism” would be insensitive to Muslims. Information dominance is important and that’s why we see the disappearance of words like terrorist, jihad, Muslim, Islam and of course, illegal. The MSM and many of our leaders have to be self-sensored.

I am in favor of DEFIANT TRESPASSER myself. They know it is illegal to enter the US without a passaport, etc. So they are defiant to the laws of the US. That takes care of illegal…even though they still are here illegally. How about we call them sick birds?

I freely admit that I’m a prejudiced reader on this subject. An illegal alien is indeed, contrary to left wing loon liberals, a consummately appropriate term to describe this group of individuals. They are here illegally and they are not by any measure citizens of this country. Hence, they are “illegal aliens”. By liberal thinking, some creature from outer space should also not be labeled and “alien” because it would take away their self respect. How nuts can you get? Oh, just wait a minute for some other liberal to speak out loud. What part of “illegal” or “alien” don’t you lefty loon wing nuts understand?   Sorry, Indiana Patriot, but the term “Criminal Trespassers” is confusing. It applies to U.S. citizens on property that they have no right to be on as well as foreign nationals illegally in America. The term “illegal immigrant” is also inaccurate — as it includes those here illegally who have no intention of “immigrating” in any sense (it includes those simply here “on business” — including the drug trade and terror missions). May I suggest “Trespassing Foreign Nationals”? It is accurate. It is all-inclusive. It cannot be confused with other situations. It IS sort of long, but could be abbreviated in conversation: “Treffen” or “Trefnat”, for example.

Illegal immigration is a huge problem. These people should and can have rights if they do it the LEGAL way. The countries they are running away from should be blamed for any dignity being lost. We give everyone equal rights but when you are illegal you don’t get those rights, simply because they are ILLEGAL and they IMMIGRATED from countries that have abandoned, murdered, and exploited them, make any sense Mr. Preacher?

  Exactly correct! Those crossing our southern border typically have jobs in their home country, have some money, and usually at least an 8th grade education. They are not in a war-torn country, or starving, or persecuted. Most read and write in their home language. We need to realize that greed is the motivating factor, not self-preservation or the need to feed their children. The U.S. offers them superior healthcare for chronic or advanced disease, better and free schools, instant citizenship for children born here, and work that is paid in U.S. dollars, which is worth more in their home country. If we as a country stopped all of these perks, the “walk-over-the-border” immigration would dry up almost instantly.

“Liberal Christian” is an oxymoron. Not because Christians are too strait-laced, but because the modern definition of “liberal” reflects a belief system which denies and disparages even the most basic tenets of Christianity.

Liberals lie. Liberals cheat. Liberals believes that abortion is not murder. Liberals believe that the end justifies the means. Liberals deny and denounce God at every opportunity.

Self-proclaimed “Christians” who adhere to the liberal ideology are being dishonest even with themselves and should do some serious soul-searching before they declare that they support liberal positions while also claiming they represent Christ.

  Vernon, everyone understands their desire to make their lives better and to have better opportunities. We welcome anyone willing to come here the right way and do the right thing while they’re here. Desperation is not an excuse to break our laws. Personally I’d like to see a facility like Ellis Island opened up again, but a bit more streamlined. Yes, our processes currently are slow and complex, but until they’re changed it is what it is.   The US has absolutely NO obligation to accept everyone and anyone into their borders. Aliens do not have a right to be accepted into the US. Naturalization and immigration is a PRIVILEGE, not an entitlement. No man can illegally cross an international border. No one today can enter illegally into Guatemala, Mexico, China, or any country, fortify themselves there, demand rights and benefits, and expect to be treated like a Citizen of that country, especially if not even GRANTED permission to be there. While immigration may be necessary for a nation to thrive internationally, it is not to be employed at the expense of that nation’s sovereignty and independence. EVERY single politician in office took an Oath to uphold and support the Constitution of the US. The preamble states, “We the People, of the United States”. For our politicians to assist, aid, and make laws for the benefit and in the interest of foreigners (especially those here illegally), over their own People (US Citizens), is treason.

  You can’t be liberal and Christian……Fact is the liberal actually booed having God has part of their platform…..there’s video to prove. So I argue all liberal who claim to be Christian and stay in the liberal party are nothing more than liberal plants trying garner support from actual Christians by posing as one.
