Jason Chaffetz: Obama Administration Sent Attorney to Follow Me During Trip to Libya

Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) listens during a hearing on Capitol Hill on October 10, 2012 in Washington, DC. The hearing before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee focused on the security situation in Benghazi leading up to the September 11 attack that resulted in the assassination of U.S. Ambassador to Libya J. Christopher Stevens. (Credit: Getty Images)

During a House Oversight and Government Reform Committee hearing on Wednesday, Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) revealed he dropped everything and traveled to Libya on a fact-finding mission following the deadly terrorist attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi.

However, Chaffetz didn’t travel alone. He said the State Department sent an attorney to follow him — a sitting member of U.S. Congress — in his “every footstep” as he searched for answers in the wake of the fiery assault that claimed the lives of U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans.

“I did go to Libya. I did drop everything. I had the same type of notice that was given to the Democrats. In fact, the State Department sent an attorney to follow me in my every footstep,” Chaffetz said.

Chaffetz also warned Obama administration officials about releasing “classified” information about the attack.

“Now this was a massive attack, no doubt bout it. We are getting new details. And I believe, Mr. Chairman, the reason we have those details is because of this hearing,” he said. “Mysteriously, the State Department decided to give a press briefing last night. We weren’t invited. Certain news outlets weren’t invited. Any reasonable person looking at the security situation in Libya had to come to the conclusion that it was tumultuous at best.”

Chaffetz went on to say he wished he could share everything he had learned while in Libya but said the federal government needs to be careful about discussing “sensitive, secure information about sources and methods.”

“I think some of the information that the State Department has shared oversteps some of those bounds,” he added.

I thought that it was too dangerous for the FBI to go to Egypt to investigate the terrorist attack? It has been said that a company of Marines could not provide security. So, how does a Congressman do it alone, or at least with an attorney shadowing him? Something smells very bad in Libya. What is it that Chavetz has learned there?

After watching the hearings, it appears that it was clear to anybody who was in country could tell that things were unraveling in Libya. Violence was steadily increasing and the US was the only western country left with a presence in Benghazi. If it was too dangerous in Benghazi, why did the US continue to operate a facility there, while drawing down security based on a predefined timeline?

It appears that this is a clear case of the Obama Administration putting political concerns above everything else. Obama has so few “successes” to talk about in his all important re-election campaign, that they couldn’t afford to jeopardize that by doing anything that would suggest anything other than success in Libya. Two days before at the DNC, the campaign was touting Obama’s foreign policy prowess. The key to that narrative was Libya. If they started closing consulates in Libya because of security concerns, that would be reported and damage the “optics” of Obama’s foreign policy. They probably knew things were getting really bad in Libya, but were waiting until after the election to make any moves to deal with the security situation there. Too bad for them that the whole thing built blew up in their face a couple of months too early.

Seems it wasn’t just Russians, any government that has something they want to hide tends to do that. Hitler was notorious for making sure one of his loyal SS would be there just to make sure “the facts were correct.” In fact it’s pretty cliché in gangster movies, that they always send someone with who is not very bright, but always very loyal to make sure everything is kept the way the crime bosses want it kept, and finding are what the bosses want.

A responsible government would not release all of the information that it has to the general public. Some of the people that work in intelligence or people that give intelligence have to be protected. Certain information can be back tracked and the source can be identified. In the case of people that are in the field, they could be killed. In the case of a whistle blower, the Obama Administration could destroy their careers and lives for telling the truth.

Remember, though there may have been cuts to spending, the cuts did not specify what or where the cuts should be. They spend $ to upgrade the embassy in Venzueila to make it “greener” so they could have spent the money on manpower in those areas where it was needed. I also watched the hearings. The state dept. said that the budget was not an issue. They were basically told not to increase security because it would look like things were not asgreat as the administration was portraying.

If the budget was so constrained they could secure the embassy in the most volatile corner of the world, why did the administration have enough money to upgrade infrastructure at embassies all over with green technology. Rep. Kelly touched on this when he mentioned going to a State Dept. party in Vienna and clinking champagne glasses to celebrate their new fleet of Chevy Volts and charging stations. Maybe if they had spent less of their budget on implementing the Obama green agenda and more on accomplishing their fundamental mission, we could have avoided these “bumps in the road”.

That is a good point to raise. And I really do not have a good answer to give you. However, as an ex-Navy guy; I do know that there is at least one US Navy battle group at any one time in the area. So with that, there are ships in these battle groups that have US Marines on board. It seems to me that given the proximity of the date of the anniversary of 9/11; and that there have been numerous “small scale attacks” in the previous 5 months of the Benghazi (excuse the spelling) attack; and the numerous requests for increased security by the Ambassador’s Steven, as well as his support staff; you would THINK that the Secretary of State could push for at least a platoon of Marines to be deployed as a “temporary” security team.

Just saying that despite maybe not enough cash being specifically allocated to security of our Ambassadors; regardless of where they are, the Administration could have tapped into other resources available in the region on what us military guys would call TDY (temporary duty).

Mad — don’t believe everything you read. The Obamunists would just LOVE to turn this into a “Republicans cut spending and LOOK WHAT HAPPENED” argument. It’s hogwash. THe Obama regime and the Leftist State Department STILL had money to spend on making the Venezuelan Embassy more “Green,” and on upgrades to several of our embassies in Europe and Asia, all while leaving several of our Embassies in the Middle East — in MUSLIM countries — sorely lacking in proper security details.

The bottom line is that the Obama regime didn’t want to “offend” their Muslim Brotherhood buddies, they didn’t care about the security of the “diplomatic” personnel. The most striking thing NO ONE is asking about, however (except Glenn Beck, sort of), is, “WHY was the Ambassador in Benghazi with one other “diplomat” and two CIA agents and NO security detail?!” Furthermore, “WHY was the Ambassador turned down when he REQUESTED a security detail within days BEFORE he was assassinated?”

I’ll speculate where Glenn Beck can’t. Whatever Ambassador Stevens was doing with the CIA agents in tow, he needed to do totally under the radar. When it became apparent that al-Qaeda had them trapped, that they were under siege, well — a dead Ambassador and 3 other Americans became much easier to explain than whatever it was they were up to originally in Benghazi…..

And now that I’ve said that, I feel like Julia Roberts in “The Pelican Brief.” I wonder who I can get to start

Interesting that the State Department dispatched an attorney to follow Representative Chaffetz around. I wonder if any of the Democrat Representatives had an attorney assigned to them as well. I guess this suggests that there is now a connection in terms of culpability to the Department of Justice as well with respect to the Consulate Terrorist Attack in Libia.

Of course, there maybe “nothing to see here”…..but the mental picture is there are at least two cabinet positions now joining up with the White House to “circle the wagons”.

Question: Would it be standard procedure to assign attorneys to Congressional Representatives in scenarios such as this?

Yeah, they wanted to make sure that he didn’t go skinny dippin with any of the terrorists, you know you can’t trust them Repubs. If we just elected people people that would uphold the constitution. I think this guy is trying just that he is trying to swim in a sea of s..t. Pray that we get a chance with Romney and maybe a couple of paddles…..

I actually trust this guy….having followed his career, he’s someone worth watching and encouraging. He seems to walk the walk and talk the talk. No Bs, and seems like an honest guy…..very rare
