Rep. Trey Gowdy Explodes at Libya Hearing: ‘I Want to Know Why We Were Lied To’

Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-SC, questions Inspector General Michael Horowitz, the Justice Department's internal watchdog, as he appears before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee the day after issuing a report faulting the department for disregard of public safety in "Operation Fast and Furious," the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives' program that allowed hundreds of guns to reach Mexican drug gangs, on Capitol Hill in Washington, Thursday, Sept. 20, 2012. (Credit: AP)
Trey Gowdy, an outspoken Republican congressman from South Carolina, blasted Obama administration officials during Wednesday’s House Oversight and Government Reform Committee hearing on the Libya U.S. Consulate terrorist attack, raising his voice to levels rarely heard on the House floor.
Gowdy went after both U.S. Ambassador Susan Rice and White House Press Secretary Jay Carney for providing “demonstrably false” statements about the attack, not just to Congress, but to the American people as well. He slammed the Obama administration for initially saying the attack was in response to a video and not an act of terrorism, delivering a blistering and impassioned critique of the White House’s handling of the incident.
Gowdy quoted Rice as saying, “Our current assessment is that what happened in Beghazi wasβ¦in fact, initially a spontaneous reaction” to an anti-Muslim YouTube video.
“I don’t know what the phrase “in fact” means in diplomatic legalese. I can tell you what it means in a court room — it means it’s a fact,” Gowdy proclaimed.
“I would like to have another hearing where we can ask Ambassador Rice, under oath, who told you what when. You are going to blame the intelligence committee? You come before this committee and you tell us who told you it was video!” he added, raising his voice now.
Gowdy went on to say that Carney, the “spokesperson of the leader of the free world,” also went on the record saying there was no evidence supporting the theory that the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Libya was premeditated. Carney also blamed the anti-Muslim video for the assault.
“Was it negligence? What it just a reckless disregard for the truth? or was it more nefarious than that?” the congressman asked.
Gowdy then recounted a conversation he had with Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) just before the House Oversight Committee hearing.
“He still gets emotional talking about what he saw in Libya. There were four Americans who died under circumstances we can scarcely fathom. The terror, the fear, the anarchy of being killed in that fashion,” he explained, his voice soaked with emotion.
“This was never about a video! It was never spontaneous! This is terror, and I want to know why we were lied to,” Gowdy said.
Watch the clip below:
Shortly after he spoke, Twitter exploded with talk about Gowdy’s remarks at the hearing:

I dont know how the we can find more like him with progs backed with big $$ infiltrating everywhere making elections impossible for the avg guy/gal to run. Heck I would several has suggested to me to run for congress but no money noway to get the word out.
Glenn is right about an arms deal and regime trying to cover its tracks by “eliminating” those involved. Glen Doherty spoke with ABC News weeks prior to attack saying they were on intel mission to track weapons. What weapons? Where did they come from? Who gave them to the Libyans?
I have no doubt after today Stevens brokered an arms deal btwn US and Libyan rebels. Something went bad b/c there is no reason to cut security like this and leave them hanging. Regime cut them loose, same logic applies in the rules of assassination! First rule being KILL the assassin because they know too much. With Libya it was get rid of arms dealer who could sink this admin!!!
Call me tin hat conspiracist etc etc there is no other logical reason for what happened let alone what in the heck Stevens was doing there in the first place

Posted on October 10, 2012 at 4:55pmI watched most of that hearing live on C-SPAN. Mostly lame Repub’s asking lame questions and lame Demo’s apologizing for the Repub’s asking questions.
Then there were a few moments, here and there, where the games stopped and some truth came out. BTW, the panel of 4 people being asked the questions was 2 Obama Admins trying to hide the facts and 2 Military personal trying to expose the facts.
I liked that arrangement because the 2 + 2 member panel made it possible to refute the lies right there and then. This should be done more often as the liars get exposed more quickly. IMHO

It is in my opinion either 1.Gross dereliction of duty on the part of the DAS 2.An attempt to cover up the decaying situation in Libya and the spread of Jihadist groups. 3. An attempt at hiding yet another failed US intervention that left another middle eastern country in the hands of Jihadists. Either way the current administration and it’s band of flunkies have gotten more American citizens dead. When will it be enough people. Have the American people woken up yet? Posted on October 11, 2012 at 12:02amI have not written in months waiting on Mr. Beck to do the right thing. If you look closely, really review what his media empire has provided: the real picture will emerge. Yes, Ambassador Stevens was a CIA operative and has been for years in various posting throughout the Maghreb. This actually is well known and known to Mr. Beck’s inner circle. Yes, Mr. Beck correctly identified the two ex-Seals as CIA contractors trying to find shoulder fired anti-aircraft weapons that Obamaβs administration gave to Islamist rebels in the US covert war against Libya. Yes, Obama’s administration has been funneling weapons and jihad iβs into Syria for the NATO war against Assad. Was Ambassador Stevens running this conduit? I do not know. Is the wreckage of Obama’s foreign policy going to cause a world war with Russia and Iran? Uncertain but probable. If you actually think beyond left and right, Bush – Obama – we had a very close call – war with Russia just a few years ago in Georgia or earlier in Serbia. Have any of you ever considered that this country keeps picking groups to support that are anti-west, anti-Christian, and anti-capitalist? Kosovo, Libya, Egypt, and Sryia all have the same “freedom fighters” – Islamic jihadist we support. Syria has a collection of non-Syrian jihadists imported to destroy Assad and the country. A common theme in US foreign policy is the oppression and murder of Christians and secularists in each country. Tell the turth!

Posted on October 10, 2012 at 5:01pmNow that might the most brilliant observation I’ve ever read.
This tragedy isn’t just a consequence of Obama’s failed foreign policy. It’s also a revealing indication of his ideological world view, or his “vision” as Thomas Sowell would put it. Specifically, his adherence to the social justice agenda of the “unconstrained” vision. An understanding of this vision sheds light on the reasons for Obama’s failures, both at home (on the economy) and abroad (in the Middle East).
Properly understood in the context of an ideological vision, it is a false dichotomy to bracket Obama’s foreign policy from his domestic policy. They are both the product of the same worldview and therefore inextricably linked.
So if I were Mitt Romney, I would make that point during the foreign policy debate just to keep the economy from getting shielded from the ostensible topic at hand. Romney needs to tie the state of the economy to this debacle in Libya and explain, in a larger context, why it shouldn’t be surprising why someone with such a “vision” would have a failed foreign policy and a failed economic policy.

Posted on October 10, 2012 at 4:22pmRep. Gowdy was simply channeling the frustration of the millions of frustrated Americans who know that they have been lied to. It is about time that this administration was called on the carpet for their blatant high-handed and abusive mishandling of power.

Posted on October 10, 2012 at 4:35pmYou, sadly, are probably correct that nothing will come of this. However, we can thank Congressman Gowdy that he is at least raising some hell about this on our behalf. It might raise enough doubt in someone who’s undecided to either vote against Obama or simply stay home.
That is the value that may come from this.

Posted on October 10, 2012 at 7:10pmThis is “Fast and Furious Libya”! To paraphrase an earlier chant…”Obama lied, people died”
I don’t know what these hearings will do…so they may be found “in contempt” and then what?

Posted on October 10, 2012 at 4:22pmTrey Gowdy is speaking out for America.
The obama regime can’t claim to have Intel on something that doesn’t exist, then tell everyone that they based their statements on that same nonexistent Intel. Susan Rice LYING for over 1 week to include the famous Sunday talk show circuit.
Prove us wrong obama regime!
SHOW the Intel Report that stated an offensive movie was the cause of a spontaneous attack that never took place.

Posted on October 10, 2012 at 4:20pmHow dare he questiion the verasity of those in the Obama regime! Doesn’t he know this has been the most open, transparent administration in US history. I would bet, he has the nerve to question the alleged facts regarding Fast & Furious. I would also bet, he doubts that Obama has created 5 million jobs, and that the stimilus money, and believes taxpayers funds that supported Solyndra was money down a rat hole and had no effect on jobs creation. Yes sir, he is a real doubting Thomas. Why, is difficult for certain IDIOTS to understand.

Posted on October 10, 2012 at 4:20pmAw, c’mon those weren’t lies they were just people “misspeaking”.
If they’d come out with the truth in the first place it would have made them look merely incompetent, instead of what they really are which is incompetent liars.

Posted on October 11, 2012 at 12:31amI don’t thinks a matter of no one having testicular fortitude it’s a matter of the MSM not letting us know just WTH the (R) members in Congress are doing, about anything, ever? This story is a prime example.
Did you see this story anywhere but here?

Posted on October 10, 2012 at 4:10pmAmen Rep. Gowdy! So glad to see your courage in this! The Obama Administration has been given more than enough free passes in the past 4 years. Lives were unnecessarily lost here.
