TheBlaze’s Benny Johnson contributed to this report.
On Tuesday evening, the Rev. Jesse Jackson, singer Monifah and community advocate A.R. Bernard joined BET’s T.J. Holmes to discuss homosexuality, voter suppression and other social and political issues on the latest episode of “Sleep Talkers.”
Perhaps the most controversial — and debated — subject covered on the episode was gay marriage, with some of the panelists disagreeing over how the issue should be handled within religious communities. Jackson explained that he believes “marriages are protected by one’s own choice.” In his view, gay matrimony is both a moral and a legal issue.
“People have the right to live with the people with whom they choose to be faithful,” he explained.

Of particular note, though, was a separate response that Jackson gave about homosexuality as a societal norm. Holmes pointed out that the central tenets of the Christian faith point out that “homosexuality is wrong.” The host then asked if Jackson agrees with this sentiment.
“I’m not all-together convinced of that,” the civil rights leader responded, going on to claim that marriage has “blurred” definitions. “King Solomon had many wives in that culture. Then David had many wives of that culture. The Muslims today have three or four wives of that culture.”
Rather than focusing upon a defense of traditional marriage as a central component of the faith, Jackson said he sticks to the “moral imperatives” that Jesus described in the Bible.
“All I really know is — Jesus said that ‘I was hungry and you fed me,’ ‘I was naked and you clothed me,’” he explained. “I stay as closely as I can to the moral imperatives as he described them as what’s really important.”

Oct. 14, 2012 at 1:34amIt’s only a matter of time before the Baptist church accepts Gay Marriage and Homosexual Preachers. Obama opened the door for otherwise faithful African Americans to accept Abortion and the Homosexual lifestyle. At the end of the day I always wonder, if Evangelicals/Protestants truly believe that once we say the sinners prayer no amount of sin can make us lose our salvation, how can they even began to speak out about sinful behavior? How can they even identify sin if sin is irrelevant?. Martin Luther said “sin and sin boldly” and “George Sodini from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania trusted in Martin Luther’s teachings and that’s exactly what he did. Martin Luther said “No sin can separate us from God, even if we were to kill or commit adultery thousands of times each day” As long as Evangelicals/Protestants hold to this teaching they have no grounds to condemn Abortion or Gay Marriage. There are literally hundreds of verses in the Old and New Testaments that tell us that Jesus will judge each of according to what we have done and what we have failed to do. Jesus even went so far as to warn us that we will be judged according to our hearts desire, if we even look at women we have committed adultery in our hearts and if we hate our brother we have committed murder. Eternal Security sounds nice and it makes us feel good but many souls are perishing because of this heretical and non-biblical teaching. Peace in Christ.

Oct. 13, 2012 at 10:57amWhy is this race baiting extortionist not in jail? He is a idiot and anyone who listens to his drivel is even dumber than he is. He gets a pass, because he’s dark skinned, surely not because he has anything intelligent to say.

Oct. 12, 2012 at 12:42pmJesse, you should speak the truth if you quote the bible. The truth is – there were consequences for the sin of multiple wives and adultery suffered by David and Salomon. Only after they repented and asked God for forgiveness, did some of God’s blessing come back to them. Jesse, you will not know peace until you do the same and stop leading people to sin against a Holy and Righteous God.

Oct. 12, 2012 at 11:46pmConsequences for the sin of multiple wives? Why then do we see God ENABLING David to take many wives?
2 Samuel 12:7-9:
7 ¶And Nathan said to David, Thou art the man. Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, I anointed thee king over Israel, and I delivered thee out of the hand of Saul;
8 And I gave thee thy master’s house, and thy master’s wives into thy bosom, and gave thee the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that had been too little, I would moreover have given unto thee such and such things.
9 Wherefore hast thou despised the commandment of the Lord, to do evil in his sight? thou hast killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and hast taken his wife to be thy wife, and hast slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon.

Oct. 13, 2012 at 9:21amThere is but one sin that will cause a person to be sent to hell. Rejecting the full and complete payment for ones sin. Receiving that payment places one under grace and removes the laws and all condemnation allowing me to be completely justified. The old testament and the new testament or under law or under grace should be viewed in a contrast so as to magnify what Jesus did for us. Mixing old wine(old testament) and new wine(new testament) together causes much misunderstanding.go to AWMI.ORG. Andrew Womack minsteries.

Oct. 12, 2012 at 12:08pmI don’t see how he has the gall to call himself Reverend. To defend the DNC’s anti-God platform is pure blasphemy IMO. And now, comparing gays to having multiple-wives is like comparing Apples to Camaros. This false teacher is intentionally defying God’s law and leading people away from God. He definitely needs our prayers.

Quit a Pastor, Yeah? More like a pasture to me, full of scat.
