Rev. Jesse Jackson: I’m ‘Not Convinced’ That ‘Homosexuality Is Wrong’ Since Kings Solomon & David ‘Had Many Wives’

TheBlaze’s Benny Johnson contributed to this report.

On Tuesday evening, the Rev. Jesse Jackson, singer Monifah and community advocate A.R. Bernard joined BET’s T.J. Holmes to discuss homosexuality, voter suppression and other social and political issues on the latest episode of “Sleep Talkers.”

Perhaps the most controversial — and debated — subject covered on the episode was gay marriage, with some of the panelists disagreeing over how the issue should be handled within religious communities. Jackson explained that he believes “marriages are protected by one’s own choice.” In his view, gay matrimony is both a moral and a legal issue.

“People have the right to live with the people with whom they choose to be faithful,” he explained.

Jesse Jackson Says Hes Not Convinced Gay Marriage Is Wrong

Of particular note, though, was a separate response that Jackson gave about homosexuality as a societal norm. Holmes pointed out that the central tenets of the Christian faith point out that “homosexuality is wrong.” The host then asked if Jackson agrees with this sentiment.

“I’m not all-together convinced of that,” the civil rights leader responded, going on to claim that marriage has “blurred” definitions. “King Solomon had many wives in that culture. Then David had many wives of that culture. The Muslims today have three or four wives of that culture.”

Rather than focusing upon a defense of traditional marriage as a central component of the faith, Jackson said he sticks to the “moral imperatives” that Jesus described in the Bible.

“All I really know is —  Jesus said that ‘I was hungry and you fed me,’ ‘I was naked and you clothed me,’” he explained. “I stay as closely as I can to the moral imperatives as he described them as what’s really important.”

Yes, he is no minister of God, but he has played one many times on TV, so it is OK.

“Solomon had many wives. Then David has many wives….”

The “Reverend” doesn’t even know basic Bible facts. David was Solomon’s father. It was David, then Solomon.

Of course, his basic understanding of what a marriage is by Bible definition is even worse than his basic understanding of the order of events in the Bible.

And it was just as sinful and a violation of God’s commandments for David and Solomon to have more than one wife as it is for homosexuals to engage in their unbiblical acts.

Are you sure it was a violation of God’s commands? Read 2 Samuel 12:7-9 below. Here we see God caught in the act of “giving” wives to David (especially v. 8). Just saying.

      2 Samuel 12:7-9:
      7 ¶And Nathan said to David, Thou art the man. Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, I anointed thee king over Israel, and I delivered thee out of the hand of Saul;

8 And I gave thee thy master’s house, and thy master’s wives into thy bosom, and gave thee the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that had been too little, I would moreover have given unto thee such and such things.

9 Wherefore hast thou despised the commandment of the Lord, to do evil in his sight? thou hast killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and hast taken his wife to be thy wife, and hast slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon.

The sin was in the murder of Uriah, not the taking of more than one wife.

There is NO basic definition of marriage in the bible. you can construe it – because there is no record of two men or two women ever being “married” and the bible says that HE created women to be a helpmate for man – not his equal nor his ruler either. There are numerous instances in your bible that tell and show men having more than one wife. (having been married for 40 years to one woman – I have to question the wisdom of Solomon in having even more than one – but that was his problem not mine). Abraham had a child by his wifes servant, Jacob married Leah and Rachel her sister, David had more than one wife, Solomon had so many he probably never slept with every one of them – wouldn’t have had time.

As for a man having more than one wife – where is the gripe? IF the man can afford to support them and their children – go for it. What is worse to me is a man that has multiple children by different women and isn’t “responsible” for any of them – but turns it over to the government – US – to support the women and children – while they continue to diddle all over the city, and NO ONE is hunting them down – like they do the breakaway sects of the LDS Church that still believe in polygamy.

Did I miss something? The question was same sex marriage, and suddenly the subject was Jesus saying “When I was hungry you fed me.” Wow, what a deflection. What an odd combination of people. The Bible is clear on this issue as well as many others. People create their own tribulation when they attempt to interpret the Bible to support their personal choices even when the issue is plainly covered in the Bible. Where is the link of same sex marriage to Solomon’s and David’s wives’? I agree, his words coming from Jackson’s mouth were actually suggesting something else.

J Jackson is a thug and a shamefull exibition of why so many have no hope or dreams of achievment. Jackson is a black racist intent on enriching himself and the Sandra Flukes he shacks up with. Yes, a real failure to the people who entrusted him with the key to their future. I recall 1970 reports giving specifics of the Arab world dislikes of the western world and as I listen to the Democratic platform I again hear the echo of the Arab discent towards liberalism. The tallons of justice will choke the lies that gurgle to his lips and turn to a drool down his evil ways.

Wasn’t there a city that got to experience fire and brimstone because of homosexuality?? The non-reverand needs to study what he professes to know before opening his mouth. Oh he wouldn’t be Jesse Jackson then would he.
Romans 1:32 deals with the subject in New Testament terms.

It really bugs me to see this race pimp use the title “Rev” If he had spent one half of the energy that he has used to extort money from corporations to avoid charges of “racism”–and instead encouraged and even implored black youth to focus upon education all would be far better off today–especially the black American community.. He sold his soul to the Democratic party years ago when he could have been the first black vice presidential candidate–and has been a “never was” ever since. Pity. I pray for his soul.

Uh Rev Jackson, do you know what Muslims do to Homosexuals in the middle east. They get stoned to death, don’t bring up that religion in the same context as Christianity.

Also marriage is concieved in the eyes of adam and eve, between one man, and one woman. To say anything else is hereasy and an outright lie.

I don’t know what bible you’ve been reading, but the one on MY shelf sanctions not just polygamy, but polygamy + concubines. So very far from 1 man + 1 woman. Oh, and marrying kidnapped girls after god told you to slaughter all their menfolk. Now THAT’S traditional marriage!
