Mother of Slain Navy SEAL Asks Romney to Stop Talking About Her Son: ‘I Don’t Trust Romney’

SIDNEY, Ohio (AP) — The mother of a former Navy SEAL killed in Libya has called on Mitt Romney to stop talking about her son during his political campaign.
A spokesman for the Republican presidential candidate says Romney will respect her wishes.
Romney in recent days has been telling voters of chance encounter with the former SEAL, Glen Doherty, at a Christmas party two or three years ago. Doherty was among four Americans killed in the attacks in Benghazi.
Romney told the story of his chance encounter with Doherty at least twice in the last two days as part of a larger push to show a more personal side and criticize President Barack Obama’s foreign policy. Romney, like other Republicans, have repeatedly raised questions about the president’s handling of the Sept. 11 attack.
Indeed, the Benghazi terrorist strike that left U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens dead was a centerpiece of Romney’s high-profile foreign policy speech at the Virginia Military Institute earlier in the week.
On Wednesday, Doherty’s mother, Barbara Doherty, told Boston television station WHDH that she wanted Romney to stop citing her son.
“I don’t trust Romney. He shouldn’t make my son’s death part of his political agenda. It’s wrong to use these brave young men, who wanted freedom for all, to degrade Obama,” Barbara Doherty said.
Romney spokesman Rick Gorka said: “Gov. Romney was inspired by the memory of meeting Glen Doherty and shared his story and that memory, but we respect the wishes of Mrs. Doherty.”
Romney told the Doherty story at his first stop in Ohio on Wednesday, but did not at his next two public appearances.

Posted on October 11, 2012 at 1:13amHopefully come tomorrow, Mrs. Doherty will receive a beautiful bouquet from Mr. Romney with his and his family’s condolences. Most likely Mr. Romney will probably be aghast that he might have unwittingly offended her. A forgiving heart is what Mrs. Doherty needs most now. The reality is she has lots of people she needs to mistrust. At least Glen Doherty’s sister seemed to understand Mr. Romney’s intentions and her mother’s reaction.

I do hope that after Romney is elected this woman will see that he is a good man .. and her heart will heal a bit.

I definitely disagree with your statement here. Yes, it’s a nice gesture but sending her anything would be interpreted as an admission of guilt. Thanks to your son for serving and dying for this country….even if he was participating in a “fast and furious” type scandal…..but stop trying to trademark your son’s name… You are entitled to nothing from either side and, yes, respect is important but you sound like you’re against the 1st amendment.

Posted on October 11, 2012 at 2:31amHas she received a copy of Obama’s condolence form letter? It usually takes four months for Obum to sign them, but given the deep **** he is stuck in right now, he might not let her personal tragedy go to waste. Maybe he’ll even send her a personal letter (written by one of his speechwriters, of course).
That said, I don’t think this poor mother is bitter. She needs and wants privacy to mourn her son. His memory is all his family has left of him, so it belongs to them. They will share it with the rest of us in their own time.

You will have to show me where it says that because you are telling me that bitterness is a good thing that has to be “earned.” This woman is in the 2nd stage of grief because her son – a SEAL – assisted in a treasonous cover-up aiding an anti-American terrorist group. Her son sounds like a real patriot: He was killed while trying to round up all of the weapons he helped hand out to Al Qaeda. And his actions are a reflection of how much of a failure this woman was as a mom. She knows this which is why she is demanding no one speak her son’s name. She’s just trying to save face for mistakes. This isn’t about her son; this is all about her.

“The fact of the matter is what Governor Mitt Romney said about my brother Glen is true, and he called him a hero and we’re honored by that,” Quigley said. “And we’re honored by what Obama did for the homecoming. He kept introducing himself as Mitt Romney, a political figure. The same introduction, the same opening line. Glen believed it to be very insincere and stale.”

When they ask for volunteers one of the questions is if you are married which isn’t a deal breaker if you are but is easier on everyone involved if you don’t have a wife and kids. I did 21 yrs. in the Marine Corps. and nearly half of it as Force Recon. I’ve been out nearly five years and I still am single with no kids. Some friends/family says it due to me being a smart anus which could be true too! You would think a spouse would have said something by now.

It looks like they were working in Libya because they thought the Arab Spring was a good thing. That sucks. I also heard one of Doherty’s friends describe him on FNC the other day, and I got the impression that Doherty leaned left.
I’m sorry, but I can’t reconcile being an American soldier with liberal ideology. My gut feeling is that those people fight for a reason other than patriotism. I may be grossly mistaken, but that’s how I feel.

Posted on October 11, 2012 at 1:55amI too served, under Reagan to Bush 43 (1986-2007), and am glad I didn’t have to call this poor excuse for a man, Obraindead, my Commander in Chief. Eight years under Slick Willie was hard enough. It was always hard for many of us to take orders from a draft dodger but I have much more respect for Clinton than Obonehead.
Reagan was the best not to take anything away from Bush 41 and 43. These three were MEN and lead like MEN!

Posted on October 11, 2012 at 10:17amThank You.You took the words right out my mouth. The only difference is that I see ovazi for what he truly is.He is the enemy of the state leading the state. How are you supposed to take orders from the enemy of the state and still fulfill your oath? Please someone tell me I truly want to know.I understand if you are career. You tell yourself this president will be gone in four. This however isn’t a president. He’s the enemy of the state in chief. How the hell do you reconcile yourself to that?

Posted on October 11, 2012 at 12:27amWhile I respect Seaman Doherty’s mother for not wanting to have her slain son’s name brought into political rhetoric, I respect Gov. Romney even more for honoring her wishes and the memory of this fallen hero. (My opinion is that he fell at the hands of an incompetent commander-in-chief, but this is purely my opinion.)

Posted on October 11, 2012 at 12:24amPoliticians like Romney and Obama are slimy. To keep telling the story over and over again was wrong. Once, if true was fine, but after that he was exploiting it.

Posted on October 11, 2012 at 12:32amHe told the story twice and stopped as soon as he received the request from the mother…how does this make him “slimy”? If anything it shows that he has respect and values. IMHO

Telling it twice. Had he told the story once ok. But once he did it at another stop and planned on using it at others made him slimy.
