Ryan and Biden at Odds on Almost Everything in Testy Debate: ‘That Is a Bunch of Malarkey’

There were testy exchanges throughout the first and only vice presidential debate, with Republican Paul Ryan citing the death of the U.S. ambassador in Libya and the ongoing turmoil in the Middle East as evidence Thursday night that the administration’s foreign policy is failing. Vice President Joe Biden called Ryan’s claims “a bunch of malarkey.”
“Not a single thing he said is accurate,” Biden said in the opening moments of the debate.
With a little less than four weeks left before the election, both men seemed primed for a showdown seemingly rebutting each other on every point.
Ryan argued the current administration had provided insufficient security to Ambassador Chris Stevens, who was killed, along with three other Americans, in a terrorist attack at the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi on Sept. 11
However, Biden sought to blame Republicans, saying the budget that Ryan authored as chairman of the House Budget Committee cut the Obama administration’s funding request for diplomatic security by $300 million.
Despite multiple reports that indicate there were requests for additional security at the U.S. Consulate in Libya, Biden claimed the Obama administration wasn’t “told they wanted more security.” The statement appears to be at odds with the official record.
Many times throughout the debate, Biden could be seen smiling sarcastically and shaking his head as Ryan spoke. Both men also interrupted each other a number of times, though Biden was a more frequent offender.
“I know you’re under a lot of duress to make up for lost ground, but I think people would be better served if we don’t interrupt each other,” Ryan said. But he didn’t exactly stick to his word.
The two men also tangled over the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, administration steps to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon and relations with Israel, an area where Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney frequently accuses President Barack Obama of letting down the United States’ closest ally in the Middle East.
Biden, 69, repeatedly accused Ryan of misstating the facts. “This is a bunch of stuff,” he erupted at one point.
But the 42-year-old Ryan didn’t back down. Iran is “four years closer” to having a nuclear weapon after Obama’s first term, he argued.
“You think Iran is not brazen? Look at what they are doing,” Ryan added.

The debate took place a little more than a week after Obama and Romney met in the first of their three debates – an encounter that has fueled a Republican comeback in the polls.
Following Obama’s poor performance in that debate, Democrats were relying on Biden to provide a much needed spark, which he did with a lively performance.
Biden also brought up Romney’s infamous “47 percent” remarks, the percentage of Americans he said pay no federal income tax and are reliant on entitlement programs.
In response, Ryan quipped:”The vice president knows, sometimes the words don’t come out of your mouth the right way.” The joke was obviously in reference to Biden’s tendency to commit gaffes.
“It’s about time they take responsibility” instead of signing pledges to avoid raising taxes, Biden said of Romney, Ryan and the Republicans.
But Ryan quickly recited the dreary economic statistics – 23 million are struggling to work, he said, and 15 percent of the country is living in poverty. “This is not what a real recovery looks like.”
Asked directly when they could reduce unemployment to 6 percent from the current 7.8 percent, neither nominee provided a straight answer.
Instead, Biden repeated the president’s contention that the nation is moving in the right direction, while Ryan repeated the Republican view that economic struggle persists even though Democrats had control of both houses of Congress during the first two years of Obama’s term.
“Where are the 5 million green jobs” we were told would be created? Ryan said to Biden.
For Biden, Thursday night’s debate was his first since the 2008 campaign, when he shared a stage with Sarah Palin, then John McCain’s running mate.
Sparring over tax policy, Ryan argued the Obama administration wrongly thinks it can tax the rich to pay for their out-of-control spending.
“Watch out middle class, the tax bill is coming to you,” Ryan said.
One of the last topics that the two nominees tackled was the contentious issue of abortion.
Ryan said he personally believes that life begins at conception but he respects the people who disagree with him. He said a Romney administration would oppose abortion except in the cases of rape, incest and danger to the mother.
Biden said his faith requires that he personally be against abortion because that is the position of the church. However, he added that he refuses to enforce his values on the entire American population, saying abortion is a decision to be made between a woman and her doctor.
“The fact is that we are in a situation where we inherited a God awful circumstance,” Biden said in his closing statement. He slammed Republicans’ “attitude” toward the American people, again bringing up the “47 percent” comments and saying people jsut need a “fair shot.”
“We face a very big choice. What kind of country are we going to be? What kind of country are we going to leave our kids?” Ryan said in his closing statements.
“This is not what a real recovery looks like. You deserve better,” he added, saying Romney is “uniquely qualified” to be president.
Martha Raddatz of ABC News had moderator duties.

Not only that, but with a moderator with a conflict of interest, who lost control early on, only helped Biden as he talked over, mocked, smirked, laughed like a spoiled child at the dinner table.
Martha allowed Biden WAY too much time and let him ramble on, while she kept cutting Ryan short.
She should never be allowed anywhere near a debate again.

If he had wiped the smirk off his face, it could have been interesting. But NO, he had to let everyone know he was no dull, uninteresting obama.
There’s no way I’d ever vote for Biden/obama for fear if something ever happened to obama we’d be saddled with that smirking A-hole Biden who didn’t seem to take anything seriously. How dare him act like that while so many are hurting, out of work with the worst economy ever, and the threat of a Nuclear war with a mad man running Iran. Not to mention the poor dead guys in Libya they couldn’t bother to get their stories straight on, so obama could go on to Nevada to raise more blood money.

With all due respect, I’d like to remind you that the Bush administration didn’t have a great record with regard to facts. Remember how we were sure to find WMD in Iraq? Believe me — if there was any possible excuse to impeach the President, y’all would have done it by now.

Do you remember that most of the worlds leaders and there respective intelligence agencies all agreed Iraq had WMD’s? Do you remember congress voting to authorize war? Do you remember even Hilary Clinton said they had WMD’s?
Do you remember Obama seeking congressional approval for military action in Libya? How about congressional approval for boots on the ground in 70 plus countries? Do you try to forget the Presidential kill list? Do you remember the NDAA of 2012 authorizing indefinite detention of American citizens, here or abroad? Do you remember the President authorizing drone’s in the US? Any of this ringing a bell?
I love the logic you use: Bush did bad things so you should give Obama a pass.

The difference is that we didn’t commit troops to Libya, while Iraq cost thousands of American lives (and trillions of dollars). I’m no fan of kill lists either, but there’s no question which party has committed more of our troops to more dubious causes. Leo’s Mom’s charge of a double standard is

Yes, Democrats have committed more troops to wars than republicans. Historical fact. Cost of warfare has no baring on the constitutional requirement for congress to authorize war. We had boots on the ground and bombs dropping. And the cost of both wars in Iraq and Afghanistan is 1.3 trillion and counting. Not “trillions”. About a third of that has occurred under Obama in less than 4 years.
Barrack Obama: “I ended the war in Iraq”. Uh, no. That is what we call A LIE. A big stinking bold face lie. That deal was inked in 2007…under President Bush.
Barrack Obama: “What we know is…uh, that a crude video insulting the prophet Mohamed…uh, was used to whip up crowds that attacked our embassy”. Again, LIE or dangerous incompetence. I would guess, dangerous incompetence. He would rather you think him a liar than stupid. And to add insult to, in this case, murder of our ambassador, we have the sheer stupidity to apologize for something that had nothing to do with the organized attacks on our embassies. A clear sign of weakness that will probably be paid for with more lives.
Never have I witnessed a President that could lie like Obama does. Almost every speech he gives, he lies. And by “lie” I mean quarter lies, half lies, misrepresentation and just complete fabrication.
So spare me your absurd comparisons to Bush and crazy defense of Obama. On his worst day Bush was not as incompetent as Obama. We will be dealing with Obama’s mess for years to come.

I do think Biden was more effective and convincing in his lying in this debate compared to his boss in the last debate, so I predict the media will be in a “Joe mopped the floor. . .” frenzy in the days to come. If you know the issues or are even moderately “informed”, you know that most of what Biden said was “Malarkey”, but the democrats are counting on us being dumb and not knowing anything but what MSNBC says, so. . . I do think that the stupid among us will think Biden did great (mostly the media).
Ryan came prepared, confident and full of genuine conviction and it showed. I think Ryan won convincingly.

Posted on October 12, 2012 at 1:04pmThe debate just shows the glaring differences in tactics between left and the right. The right tends to bring facts and figures, in the hope of showing people the failures of their opponent. The left brings “impassioned” talking points in hopes of making the whole contest emotional and not factual, (“Go with your gut, people.”) It is the same reason the Tea Party and Occupy people are polar opposites.
All the Leftists will think that their guy won, because they see how well he used their tactics. The Right does the same. So, WHO people say won, will tell you which camp the are in.

The title said they were at “odds on almost every issue”. Ha what a joke, they argued about cliches and rhetoric.
I had trouble identifying actual policy difference (yet again). If the Romney Ryan ticket were to grow a pair and take a stand for free markets and individual liberties they would be ten points ahead in the polls, but instead they decide to endorse in the same Big Govt solutions the Obama administration has proposed.
Anyone notice (yet again) both want to sustain the Govt income from taxes instead of lowering them to enable the free market to allocate that capitol? How about the supposed “protector” of individual liberties and limited Govt Ryan, never mentioned how the TSA is molesting children at the airport? How about no mention of the Fed and their never ending QE? Its become quite clear both candidates for the executive office offer no real change on foreign policy or domestic policy. Both endorse in a centrally planned economy and neither want to reduce the govts spending or income from taxes.
Do any of you RINO blazers see the gigantic mistake you have made by endorsing in a big Govt progressive? Can you now see that the Republicans have offered you no change from the previous administration? More Euro Socialism from both parties, the pomp and rhetoric may be different but the legislation will be identical.

In the case of death of the mother, the question is whether to save the baby or the mother. I doubt there are a lot of cases where this is really an issue. In those few cases, I come down on saving the baby.

Posted on October 11, 2012 at 10:42pmWWould have been nice to see Ryan get a full point out before being interrupted by Biden or the moderator. I guess having a moderator who’s wedding was attended by Obama was a huge plus to the democrats.

Posted on October 11, 2012 at 10:57pmMartha Raddatz interruped Paul Ryan almost as much as Joe Biden did. There was a time they were both pouncing on Ryan to answer another question, while he was still responding to the first question Raddatz asked. I
t was long and boring and Biden was a complete idiot, with his ostentatious outrage, rude interruptions and forced laughter.

Posted on October 11, 2012 at 11:42pmRaddatz was horrible.
She wouldn’t let Ryan finish his thought, leave alone an answer.
When he brought up the failed foreign policy, she quickly “Moved On”-
as they all tend to do,
when they know their “Boy-King” is going to take a whipping.
Worse of all, besides Biden
was the camera setup, it was totally annoying.
It had Ryan looking off screen
& that wide, white line down the middle
for the split screen shot
made the whole debate look like a bad infomercial.
It was horrible !
Raddatz lost control of “Bazooka-Joe”
and started screeching, like a jilted witch, she was ALL wrong as a moderator.
The moderator should have been Megyn Kelly-
smart, classy & in control….simply the best.
I think, in another life,
ole’Joe would have loved to played the part of John Forsythe’s “Charlie”
in “Charlie’s Angels”-
he fancies himself, as so debonair.
I suppose with this jerk, anything would be possible-
how the hell did he get to where he is today ?
Time to retire, “Charlie” !

Posted on October 11, 2012 at 10:41pmDid you notice the moderator? watch the number of times she is talking over/at Ryan while Biden is interrupting. Also notice… they constantly asked Ryan what would Romney/Ryan do. Yet, can anyone name when Biden was asked… ok you don’t agree what Romney will do. What will you do? You say “CUT RICH PEOPLES TAX CUT” ok you get all their money 800billion…. then what? and listen to Iran issue…. THEY CAN GET THE EXPLOSIVES… but they don’t have the place to put the bomb and launch it in. “WHAT THE!!!!!” what is easier to get the Rocket to deploy the nuke or the nuke material. These people are morons.

Posted on October 11, 2012 at 11:21pmAgree, she was definitely biased. I prefered the other guy, at least he let Obama and Romney debate instead of picking one side 75% of the time. Who would have thought that PBS was more fair on debates.
